Ferrari 458 Italia Ferrari 458 Italia
This ultramodern successor to the Ferrari F430 was shown to the public for the first time at the IAA Frankfurt Motor Show in autumn 2009. This model, although designed for the road, offers the flair of a thoroughbred racing car. Maranello’s racing experience can be felt not only in terms of pure technological transfer but also on a more emotional level, because of the strong emphasis an almost symbiotic relationship between driver and car. This is one of the areas where Michael Schumacher’s contribution, right from the early stages of the project, was of fundamental importance. The Pininfarina design features compact, aerodynamic lines, underscoring the concept of performance-orientated efficiency that inspired the project. Thus the large aperture at the front and the side air intakes serve to cool the radiator and to direct the air flow to the underfloor. In addition it has front winglets which alter their shape according to speed in order to reduce aerodynamic drag and the size of the radiator inlet. Furthermore the rear wing directs air to the oil cooler, a technology already used by Ferrari for the FXX. To provide efficient cooling for the engine, air intakes are incorporated into the underfloor which simultaneously generates a higher rear downforce. The rear bodywork between the rear diffusers acts as the surround to the novel triple exhaust tail pipes, a styling cue that recalls the legendary F40 and gives the 458 Italia’s tail an aggressive sporty stance. The completely redeveloped V8 midrear engine with dry sump lubrication reaches a maximum of 9,000 rpm (!) - an absolute first for a road car - with a high 12.5:1 compression ratio. The car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in a sensational 3.4 seconds and the maximum speed is over 325 km/h. The muscular power unit, as the name implies, has a capacity of 4.5 litres and the 8-cylinder engine delivers a fantastic 570 bhp. Thanks to the 7-speed F1 gearbox with its double disc clutch, the 458 Italia provides an unbelievably gentle gear change, as there is no interruption in the transfer of torque to the driving wheels. The interior reflects the design rigour of the exterior of the car, with clean, uncluttered forms that highlight the new driver oriented cockpit inspired by the racing world. The original shape of the air vents was inspired by the design of Formula 1 exhaust chimneys in use up until a few years ago.All the main controls are located on the steering wheel, just like a racing car, which gives the driver a wide choice of control parameters depending on the track. The di-als in the dashboard are within the direct view of the driver, the see-at-a-glance F1 control panel is located in the slender middle console, and the steering-column mounted stalks have been eliminated. The sum total of these exciting driving features is a powerful two-seater. For these reasons the 458 Italia continues the Ferrari tradition of putting the thrill into driving as a result of track-derived technological innovations.
