PILE HAMMER

– Furnishes the energy required to drive a pile– Can be

– Drop

– Single acting steam or compressed air

– Double acting steam or compressed air

– Differential acting steam or compressed air

– Diesel

– Hydraulic

– vibratory

DIESEL HAMMER

– SELF CONTAINED DRIVING PILE HAMMER

– SIMPLER AND EASIER TO MOVE FROM ONE LOCATION TO ANOTHER

Components in a unit

– Vertical cylinder

– Piston/ram

– Anvil

– Fuel and lubricating oil tank

– Fuel pump

– Injectors

– Mechanical lubricator

Operation

1. Hammer is placed at top of pile

2. Piston and ram are lifted to the upper end of the stroke and released

3. As ram nears the end of the down stroke ,it activates a fuel pump that injects fuel into combustion chamber

4. The down stroke compresses the air and the fuel to ignition heat

5. The explosion drives pile downward and the ram upward

Operation of diesel hammer

Productivity of different types

Comparison od hydraulic vs diesel hammers

–Can be open end diesel hammer or closed end open hammer– Open end hammer-40-

55 blows per minute– Close end hammer-75-

85 blows per minute

advantages

– Requires no external source of energy– Mobile and easy in movement– Economical to operate– Convenient to operate in remote areas– Operates well in cold weather– Light in weight compared to a steam hammer– Easy maintenance– Will not operate if pile breaks in between

disadvantages

– Very difficult to determine energy /blow

– May not operate well in soft soil

– No of strokes /minute is less than steam hammer

– Length is slightly greater
