Dear Reader,

We were so glad to meet so many of you personally at this year’s House Fair. Your feedback on our machinery and processes is invaluable for all our staff as they continue in their task of providing you with the solu-tions you need.

This year we were able to show the entire spectrum of footwear production from di-rect soling to our amir® system, for both direct soling and cementing. Our latest ex-citing development, the Quadwrap® Trainer, was the ‘must see’ for our guests in Achim and our Sales department report it is rapidly becoming the ‘must have.’

There are changes in the Sales department, as Marco Schaefer is moving closer to our customers. He will be our man for the USA, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean, working

out of the USA. Witali Humann has taken over from Marco for the areas of India, the UK and the Middle East; find out more about him on page 8.

We’d like to thank all of you who have con-gratulated us on the German team’s win in the FIFA World Cup. Here at DESMA we all enjoyed the exciting month of great foot-ball and are inspired by the discipline and ‘Teamgeist’ shown by Joachim Löw’s squad.

With good orders and fascinating projects, the DESMA team with its unique mix of ex-perience and enthusiasm for innovation look forward to working with you into 2015.

Yours,

KLAUS FREESE CHRISTIAN DECKER

DESMA TECHNOLOGY CONCEPT

“We’ve reinvented the shoe!“DESMA CONCEPT SHOE QUADWRAP® TRAINER

Karsten Stöbener, Björn Dormann, Martin Orthey and Uwe Remmele are excited.

Their task? To take a long hard look at shoe production, identify where lead times can be reduced, production simplified and costs saved. The team’s unique combination of product, materials, design and technology expertise has led to the latest DESMA de-velopment: the Quadwrap® Trainer.

“When the customer goes into the shop to buy a new shoe, the very first thing is – what does it look like? That’s what makes the customer take the shoe off the shelf and try it on. It has to look good.” But DESMA’s design specialist Uwe Remmele knows only too well that technical functions also need to be taken into account.

Dr. Karsten Stöbener explains: “In tradi-tional shoe designs many visual and tech-nical functions are given by individual shoe components; the mid-sole of sport shoes, for instance, is made from blown ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), providing low density and high shock absorption. Traditionally designed shoes may contain as many as 65

distinct parts requiring up to 360 mainly manual processing steps for assembly. In mass production this manual assembly re-quires hundreds of workers per production line. The effort is, quite simply, immense. Fast-rising labour costs in Asian shoe pro-duction regions have put enormous pres-sure on traditional shoe producers.”

All that is now history.

The DESMA concept shoe, as demonstrat-ed at the DESMA House Fair 2014 as the Quadwrap® Trainer, is a fully functional shoe simplified to four polyurethane layers, di-rectly joined within the moulding process: no manual cementing is required.

“Each layer enables optical and/or technical functions. Properties – shore hardness, col-our, density – are adjusted within the process for each polyurethane layer through variation of component mixing ratio as well as addition of pigments or agents in the mixing head of the injection machine,” explains Björn Dor-mann, Head of the DESMA Technikum.

“What this means,“ adds his colleague Martin Orthey, chief developer of this exciting new process, “is that we can produce complete PU footwear with a density comparable to EVA just by in-process addition of blowing agent.”

By simple extension of a standard direct-soling machine combined with innovative mould design DESMA has realised fully au-tomated production of the complete shoe. This production is operated with just one or two machine operators, massively reliev-ing labour cost pressures. It’s the basis for economically competitive shoe mass-pro-duction close to regional consumer markets: a revolution. < |

We have such a strong partnership. It’s a ‘must’ for us to be here.” Edson

Galvao of Brazilian safety footwear giant BSB and his colleague Alexandre Pessoni are deep in discussion with DESMA’s Maik Kohler. BSB has a machine park of six DESMAs already and is here to ‘see something new’.

Buddy Eoff of Munro, based in Hot Springs, Arkansas, USA, is also here to see the ‘lat-est technology’. At present Munro produces women’s shoes on established DESMA ma-chinery.

Ocean Shiue of PUHU Footwear, Taiwan, in Achim for the first time, is surprised by the extent of the Fair. He’s curious about the DESMA Laser Cell and is fascinated by the automation possibilities shown at the Fair. Just taking a break with a juice and a snack in the exhibition marquee is a group from Polish company PPHU Lukpol. They are old DESMA friends, with 20 years of partner-ship and six machines for direct injection of PU boots. “The main thing for us,” explains Grzegorz Skomorowski, production man-

ager, “is to see the latest technology: robots, automation.”

Christian Decker, DESMA MD is rushing from one presentation to talk to more custom-ers about the new Quadwrap® shoe. How is he enjoying himself? “Fantastic! And even busier than in the past. We’ve focused on polyurethane and automation and those are buzzwords in the industry today.”

Back in the exhibition hall, Canadian Dan Aleven enjoys telling of his long history with

DESMA, his family’s connections with foot-wear production stretching back over gen-erations. He’s interested in automation too, as ‘Repatriating production’ is how he sees the future of his industry.

“Everbody’s here!” Jim Lee, President of Grand Unitech of Taiwan, which has been a DESMA partner since 1980 is enjoying the chance to network. Stefka Radoslavova of VESTA-R Ltd. of Bulgaria agrees. Her com-pany represents DESMA in the small but growing Bulgarian footwear industry.

Olaf Vicol and Frank Holland of Elten are taking the chance to look at robots, applica-tions and the amir® system, whilst DESMA’s Dieter Bade is busy chatting to old friends from Ricosta, who operate a large DESMA machine park including “Two really big ones – 30 and 40 station, direct soling with pouring technology.” “It’s the leading fair in the indus-try,” Stefan Jerg of Ricosta is quite clear about the importance of these two days in Achim.

It’s the first House Fair for Ed Skoniecki of American & Schoen Machinery Company of

Massachusetts. He’s impressed, especially by the “Great supporting cast! It all shows the loyalty DESMA feels towards its cus-tomers and vice versa.”

“It’s all about partnership,“ confirms Klaus Freese, DESMA MD. “We have built a huge network within the footwear industry over many years. We see this as a great chance to get direct feedback… and to be honest, all of us love the chance to show off our latest ideas. And now we’re already looking for-ward to seeing everyone again in 2016!” < |

ARA PORTUGAL TAKES DELIVERY OF ITS LATEST ‘DESMA’

Gorgeous shoes and great people!” DESMA’s Dieter Bade doesn’t try to hide

his enthusiasm about customer ara and its products.

World-renowned footwear producer ara is famous for its high-quality, fashionable foot-wear. Founded in 1949, the company is based in Langenfeld, Germany. Roughly 4,000 em-ployees at various sites produce footwear which is sold in more than 50 countries world-wide. DESMA and ara are old friends; indeed ara continues to produce on DESMA machin-ery which is over 30 years old.

Bade’s enthusiasm continues when he de-scribes the teamwork between DESMA and ara.

“Sometimes finding just the right solutions for the individual customer takes a while, but this time it was all really straightforward,“ he confirms. “DESMA and ara are both gi-ants of the footwear industry and it was clear that we wanted to work together going forward. Communication was great, a very smooth partnership.”

ara took delivery of a 30-station D522 com-plete with amir® system in December 2013. The machinery is up and running at ara’s pro-duction site in Portugal.

Volker Kolossa, MD of ara Portugal is just as delighted as his friend Dieter Bade with the new possibilities offered by his DESMA. It’s

a change for the company, who have previ-ously produced footwear using traditional methods.

As ara top management remarked recently: “We need the highest quality machinery and are very glad we made the choice for DESMA. We are completely satisfied!” < |

We know that when Mr Yoshiike is part of the team then everything will be

completed to the very highest standards of accuracy,” confirms a member of the DESMA Sales team.

Yoshiike, founder and owner of M. Franklin Office in Yokohama City, some 30 minutes south of Tokyo by train, majored in applied chemistry. This in-depth knowledge of ma-terials and processes has stood him in good stead ever since he first met DESMA in 1967.

What does he especially relish about his role?“I love being the face of DESMA for our cus-tomers here in Japan. I really enjoy introduc-ing them to the latest technologies and de-velopments, and in turn passing their ideas and comments back to the DESMA team in Germany. One of the reasons for my custom-ers’ friendship with me having been kept un-til today over many years is the care and at-tention given by the DESMA spare parts and

service department, Jörg Zilz and his team members Messrs Gienke and Paeschke.I also enjoy taking the chance to visit as many Fairs as I can – studying new technolo-gies and meeting up with old friends and making new contacts.”

“We all very much appreciate Mr Yoshiike’s thoroughness and care.“ Klaus Freese, DESMA MD smiles in agreement as Maja Thran of

Witali Humann faces new challenges

Goodbye to Dr Franco Lunari and Etienne Koch

DESMA was a global company long before this became the modern buzzword. We

were never ‘globalized’, it was an organic process: the footwear-producing industry all

In July 2014 we said goodbye to two of the pillars of the DESMA network: Dr Franco Lunari, Italy and Etienne Koch, France.

We at DESMA owe a debt of gratitude to both men. We thank them for their engagement on our behalf, and on behalf of their customers and wish them a long and happy retirement.

Witali Humann, responsible for Sales in Russia and the CIS countries, will

now also be responsible for, Sales in India, Middle East, Central and North Africa and the UK.

Dr Lunari’s career with DESMA reaches back to 1984. The trained engineer had

seen DESMA machines at work and knew im-mediately that he wanted to be part of what he calls the DESMA ‘Adventure’. DESMA Achim was just as eager to get the exper-tise and enthusiasm of Franco Lunari on the team. Now in his 70s, he looks back on over 30 years of discussions, ideas – not to mention good meals – with DESMA staffers and cus-tomers. He’s now looking forward to spend-ing more time playing his beloved piano, continuing his extensive reading and maybe sometimes reflecting on all the top machin-ery he has helped on its way.

Etienne Koch also speaks of his DESMA ‘Adventure’. Joining the family company

HAEHN in 1984, the graduate electrical engineer has been DESMA’s ‘Go-to’ man in France ever since. Koch explains how he learned from his uncle Théo Bentz ‘every-thing’ about the world of shoemaking, and DESMA in Achim has been delighted to have such an expert voice providing advice and support to customers in France.

over the world is a relatively small commu-nity and from the very beginning the word quickly spread that DESMA machinery was the key to successful production. These days

international communication through email is relatively easy, but DESMA has always re-alized the benefits for the customer in hav-ing a representative in-country.

“That’s what’s important to me. When I sold something I knew I had sold a good product.”

Ulderico Ramon is now DESMA contact for Italy. < |

After nearly 30 years at the forefront of tech-nology, the 55-year-old will enjoy spending more time with his family, playing his bass guitar and finding more time for sport: skiing in winter and golf in summer.Mr Narith Meksavanh is new owner of HAEHN. < |

DESMA-trained with over 15 years’ experi-ence with the company, fluent in English and Russian, he’s looking forward to visiting as many customers as possible. In his free time he is to be found on the

sports field – either playing or watching his family. < |
