“Routes to Luther” offer you the chance to get to know
Luther, the places where he lived, the time in which he
lived, and one of the most interesting cultural landscapes
in German and European history. Eisenach, Erfurt,
Schmalkalden, Torgau and the two Lutheran towns of
Eisleben and Wittenberg are home to the most important
Lutheran sites where you can experience the close connec-
tion between the life and influence of Luther and the
backdrop against which they were set. The “routes” will
take you to Wartburg Castle and to Luther’s house in
Eisenach, to the Augustinian Monastery in Erfurt, to the
houses in Eisleben where Luther was born and where he
died, to Hartenfels Palace in Torgau and to the Luther
House and Melanchthon’s house in Wittenberg. Visitors
will find permanent exhibitions on various aspects
of the Reformation as well as special exhibitions, tours
accompanied by expert guides, concerts, lectures, con-
ferences, etc. “Routes to Luther” will show you how to
follow in Luther’s footsteps and will also help you to dis-
cover Luther in your own personal way.

hides a modern exhibition behind its venerable walls.
New ideas, a contemporary design and fascinating
technology mean that we can experience Luther in our
time and enable us to hold an inner dialogue with the
great reformer. The Luther rooms remind us of his
school days in Eisenach and the first floor takes you on
a vivid journey through timeand the history of this Protes-
tant vicarage.
The Luther memorial at Karls-
platz shows a larger than life
model of Martin Luther, the
reformer, with the Bible in
his hands. The plinth is dec-
orated with scenes of his
time in Eisenach. St. George’s
Church can be visited all year
round. Inside the church
valuable Gothic, Renaissance
and Baroque works of art are
on show. The Ludowing land-
graviate stones are kept in
the church’s chancel. After
taking a refreshing walk
through the town park to the student fraternity me-
morial you can enjoy a wonderful view of Wartburgcastle. The stone portrait of Luther is waiting to greet
you again at the dome on top of the memorial.
MMartin Luther had many connections to the town of
Eisenach. He had a number of family ties and spent five
formative periods of his life there. From 1498 to 1501 he
attended St. George’s school. Luther was a hardworking,
talented and modest boy who was popular with both
teachers and students. His musical talents enabled him
to critically assess compositions and even to compose
himself. Martin Luther always had fond memories of
his school days and referred to Eisenach as “... my dear
town”.On his journey to and from the imperial parliament in
Worms Luther preached at St George’s Church in 1521.
While he was in protective custody he translated the
New Testament under the guise of Junker Jörg at Wart-
burg castle. On his journey to the religious rallies in
Marburg Luther stopped off in Eisenach in 1529, and in
1540 he spent 3 weeks as the guest of Superintendent
Justus Menius in his house at Pfarrberg. The Luther
memorials have been lovingly preserved. Luther’s house,

On the evening of 4 May 1521 the exiled and outcast
monk arrived at his predetermined place of shelter, the
castle protectorate of Wartburg. Here he assumed the
name of Junker Jörg, grew his hair and beard, wore secu-
lar clothes again for the first time and after weeks of
composure took advantage of the seclusion to create the
most important work of his life—the translation of the
New Testament of the Bible. The protectorate was the
backdrop for this and because of Luther’s ten-month
stay there Wartburg castle was to achieve worldwide
renown. For more than half a millennium the personage
of Martin Luther, his work and his influence have been
woven like a thread into the history of Wartburg castle.
No other person—neither the holy Elisabeth, nor Land-
grave Hermann, organiser of the legendary bard war
and patron of Walther von der Vogelweide and Wolfram
von Eschenbach—have had such a strong influence on
the long history of the castle, helping it to maintain the
renown that it still holds to this day.
TTraditionally, Wartburg castle is
so closely linked with the name of
Luther that it is occasionally re-ferred to as “Lutherburg”. Less
than a generation after the death
of the reformer, the first pilgrims
set off on a pilgrimage to
Eisenach and up to the castle to
see Luther’s Room and to remem-
ber him in respectful prayer. They
could not miss it, as an archive
notice from the year 1574 is there
to vouch for the authenticity of
the “Dr. Martinus Rooms”. The sig-
natures, initials and dates—the
oldest being from 1603—scratched
into the wooden panelled walls
are proof of continual visits over
the centuries. The Luther Room at Wartburg castle
represents an authentic and, at the same time, well-
preserved scene from the life of the reformer and
demonstrates the influence of one of the most im-portant personalities since the beginning of modern
times. Next to the Roman palace of the Thuringian
landgraves it is the most precious “exhibit” at Wartburg
castle.

Among some of the world famous former visitors or
erstwhile residents of Erfurt were: Martin Luther,
Adam Ries, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Friedrich von
Schiller, Wilhelm von Humboldt, Johann Sebastian
Bach, Czar Alexander I and Napoleon. Buildings that are
reminders of these characters, such as the Augustinian
Monastery, the third-oldest university building in
Germany (1392) or the Imperial Hall, have been re-
novated to give visitors a respectful and very realistic
image of the past.
A comprehensive programme of events throughout the
year ranging from the Bach Weeks and the “cathedral
steps” festival plays to the Martin’s Festival (tradition-ally on 10 November—an ecumenical celebration in
honour of Martin Luther and Saint Martin of Tours, the
patron saint of Erfurt), all of which add to the buzzing
atmosphere of this up-and-coming provincial capital.
Allow yourself to be enchanted by the 1260 years of
history that can still be experienced in all their glory in
the city of Erfurt.
M
Martin Luther, the great reformer, once said that Erfurt
“is situated in the best location. It is the perfect place for
a city ”. Visit Erfurt for a rendezvous in the heart of
Germany! The regional capital of Thuringia, Erfurt is characterised
by one of the most well preserved medieval city centres
in Germany. It is a charming blend of wealthy town-
houses and lovingly reconstructed half-timbered
buildings, overlooked by the towering spires of
St. Mary’s Cathedral and the Church of St. Severus. The
Krämer Bridge is the only one of its kind in Europe—at
120 metres it is the longest inhabited bridge, complete
with 32 houses. Quite close to the “Domberg” (cathedralhill) the only extensively preserved baroque fortress in
Central Europe invites you to explore the maze of
passageways in its underground mine. Originally built
at the crossroads of important trade routes, Erfurt has a
rich history and is renowned for its cathedral and
university as well as its connections to Luther.
In its colourful past as the economic, spiritual, culturaland political centre of Thuringia, the city has always
attracted famous personalities,especially those respon-
sible for influencing the spirit of their times.

EErfurt is the spiritual home of Martin Luther. He studied
here from 1501—1505 at the then already well-known
university. He began studying the “seven ancient
sciences”, then later studied theology and, following his
father’s wishes, he also studied law.
Yet it was a significant personal experience that was to
radically change his life. On 17 July 1505 he requested
acceptance into the Erfurt monastery, home to the
Augustinian hermits, an order fa-
mous for its scholarship. A strict daily
schedule dictating spiritual and ascetic
exercises and further scientific educati-
on within the order were to control his
life as a monk for many years. In April1507 Martin Luther was ordained as a
priest he lies his first service (Primiz) on
the 2nd of May, 1507, in the Monastery
Church.
The Augustinian Monastery and
the Monastery Church (with its glass
window depicting the life of Jesus and
Saint Augustus), as well as the old university which
today has a new lease of life, the cathedral and Church of
St. Severus, and the other churches where Luther later
gave his sermons, are the most important witnesses to
Luther’s time in Erfurt.

tery in a contemporary fashion. The “Luther cell”, part of
the exhibition, is an excellent example of this. Yet the
Augustinian Monastery of today is more than just a
memorial site. It is also an architectural monument, a
historical example of medieval religious architecture
situated right in the old town of Erfurt. Badly destroyed in
the Second World War but rebuilt in authentic historicalstyle, it now serves as an internationally renowned con-
ference and seminar centre for the Protestant Church in
Saxony, with 75 beds and eight conference rooms. It also
has a significant historical library. Since 1996 a group of
sisters from the Casteller Ring Community have been
living, praying and working in the Augustinian Monas-
tery. The seven nuns conduct the church’s canonical pray-
ers four times a day and attend services in St. Augustus
and attend services in the Monastery Church.
Anyone wishing to follow in the footsteps of Luther in
Erfurt is always welcome at the Augustinian Monastery.
Fifty guest rooms furnished in keeping with the style of
the monastery are available for meetings, seminars and
those wishing to stay overnight to pray.
Since Luther’s death Erfurt has been a “Lutheran City”
and the Augustinian Monastery has been one of the
most important “Lutheran sites”. The Augustinian
Monastery pays tribute to Martin Luther with a perma-
nent exhibition that depicts the history of the creation
of the bible and the history of the Augustinian Monas-

John Frederick, Martin Luther presented his articles of
faith, which were incorporated into the Book of Concord
of the Evangelical church as the Schmalkaldic Articles and
form the basis upon which Lutheran pastors are ordained,
even today. Written at a time when Luther felt he was
close to death, Luther poured his heart and soul into the
articles, and they are often referred to as Luther’s “private
confession”.

Formerly part of Hesse, Schmalkalden is a focal point of
German and European 16th century history. Landgrave
Philipp of Hesse was to become one of the first Protestant
princes of Germany and an adversary of Charles V,
because he regarded the reformation of the church and of
the faith by Martin Luther not as a purely German event,
but as a change whose impact would resonate throughout
the whole of Europe. Following the events at the Augs-
burg Diet in 1530, and the renewal of the Worms Edict, Phi-
lipp was one of the princes who realised that only a united
alliance of all Protestants would offer protection against
the Emperor. The Schmalkaldic League was founded in
the last week of December, 1530. Seven diets were held in
the town. 1537 has gone down in history as the most
“glittering princes’ diet”. The diets were attended by six-
teen princes, six counts, envoys of the Emperor, of the
Pope and of the kings of France and Denmark, representa-
tives of the 28 Imperial and Hanseatic cities, as well as
42 Evangelist theologists led by Martin Luther and PhilippMelanchthon. On the instructions of the Elector of Saxony,

Conscious of the historic events and aware of the econo-
mic importance of the town of Schmalkalden, Landgrave
Wilhelm IV of Hesse, son of Philipp the Magnanimous,
commissioned the building of Wilhelmsburg Castle
(1585 – 90). The result was a prime example of modern
German Renaissance architecture, modelled on palaces in
France and Germany.
Today, visitors come to Schmalkalden from all over theworld to tread truly historic ground, and to seek and find
traces of the momentous events of the 16th century.

Although the Schmalkaldic War (1546/47) brought the
Schmalkaldic army a devastating defeat in the battle of
Mühlberg/Elbe, the Reformation and the Evangelical
faith continued.

TThe town of Eisleben with its 25,000 inhabitants nestles
in the hilly contryside at the eastern foot of the Harz
mountains. It is one of the oldest towns between the Harz
and the Elbe. The town centre with its medieval market,
the town hall, the residences of the Mansfeld counts and
the town houses gives an insight into the historic flair of
this town.
Eisleben was first mentioned in 994 and is recognised as atown since the 12th century. In the 15th and 16th centuries
the town developed into the economic and cultural center
of the once powerful county of Mansfeld. This was due to
its positioning at the crossroads of two major trade routes
and, more important, due to the mining and smelting of
copper slate in the area. It was at this time that Eisleben’s
new town was built by a community of miners, with its St.
Anne’s Church and the nearby Augustinian Hermit
Monastery. The late Gothic altar, the precious murals, the
painted coffered ceilings and the only illustrated bible
made of stone in Europe are certainly worth a visit.
The market place in Eisleben with its memorial to Luther
Church of St. Peter and Paul
In the 2nd half of the 13th century a Cistercian monastery
was built in the East of the town, in Helfta, which was
seen as the “crown” of all German convents and became a
center of mysticism. In the late autumn of 1999 the mona-
stery was brought to life again when an convent of nuns
decided to make it their home.
The countryside of Mansfeld is characterised by its
mining past, but it is also clearly part of the Harz foothills.
It is worth a visit to see the woods and hills, the recreation
area around the “Sweet Lake”, and the old castles and
monasteries.

top floor has been used since
1693 as a special place for
celebrating Luther.
On 18 February 1546 the cycle of
Martin Luther’s life was comple-
ted in his birthplace. Discussions
between the counts of Mansfeld
provided the reason for Luther
to spend the last three weeks of
his life in Eisleben. He wanted
“to see his dear lords reconciled
before he went to his grave”.
On 16 and 17 February after
painstaking discussions theagreements were finally signed.
The house in St Andrew’s Church
Square (Andreaskirchplatz) only
came to public attention in the 18th century.
In 1862 it was purchased from a private owner by the
Prussian government. In the following years, the house
was restored in a late Gothic style and was opened to
the public for the first time. Today, the house is a memo-
rial to Luther’s death.
The exhibition gives an insight into Martin Luther’s
bonds with his homeland, his thoughts on death and
dying, and his last resting place. Among the most
important exhibits is the original pall from Luther’s
coffin. The late Gothic church of St. Andrew, the place
where Luther gave his last four sermons and where the
first two memorial services for the Reformer were held,
is only in short distance from the house where he died.

TThe town of Eisleben is occasionally referred to as the
reformer’s Bethlehem and Jerusalem. On 10 November1483 Martin Luther was born in the road then known as
“Lange Gasse” and was baptized the next day in the
nearby Church of St. Peter and Paul. His parents moved
from the Thuringian town of Möhra to the county of
Mansfeld as his father found a way to earn his living in
the local mining industry. Very early on the inhabitants

of Eisleben started to treasure the memory of their
greatest son in the house where he was born. The cur-
rent appearance of the building is a reconstruction
after the town fire in 1689. On the ground floor the
rooms have the typical layout of a town house at the
end of the Middle Ages. Starting in March of 2007, thereis a new permanent exhibition entitled: “That’s where
I’m from – Martin Luther and Eisleben”. The completely
renovated house where Luther was born and the new
museum provide the perfect location to learn about the
family of the great reformer, the mining activities of his

For centuries Wittenberg has retained an important
role in religion, science and culture, and since 1938 it
has presented itself as the official “Town of Luther”.
Since 1996 the town of Dr. Martin Luther contains
UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites in the castle
and municipal churches, with their historical signifi-
cance for the course of the reformation, the Luther
House and Melanchthon’s house. Its revived univer-
sity and the “Leucorea” foundation are bringing the
international atmosphere back to this small town that
has a leading place in world history. Master Meinhardi
would be very pleased.
AAt the beginning of the 16th century, Master Meinhardi
promoted Wittenberg University by describing, “the
location, the beauty and the fame of the well-known,wonderful town of Albioris, commonly known as Witten-
berg”.
Even today, visitors to the Lutheran town of Wittenberg
can enjoy the atmosphere of Reformation and Renais-
sance. Strolling through the old town, where the stone
witnesses of time are lined up next to each other like
pearls, you will come across the Castle Church with its
world famous Thesis door and the graves of Luther and
Melanchthon, the courtyards of Master Cranach, the
Town Church with its impressive Cranach altar, and the
houses of Luther and Melanchthon. The old town of
Wittenberg is a unique open-air museum which lets
you experience important aspects of world history.
Wittenberg was first documented in 1183 as the home
of the “Askanier” and later the “Wettiner”, and from the
end of the 15th century it served as the princely resi-
dence of Frederick the Wise. His clever politics, the
rapidly developing university founded in 1502, theinfluence of Luther, Melanchthon and other leading
reformers, all led to this small town on the Elbe
becoming the centre of spiritual life in Europe.

in the great auditorium, an indulgences chest of the
period, and, of course, Luther’s Bible and many priceless
papers, manuscripts and pamphlets. Not far from the
Luther House is Melanchthon’s house, built for him in
1536, that has survived the centuries in amazingly good
condition. Melanchthon’s study, and the room where
he died, the classroom and also th e lovely herb garden
and the wealth of items on display give a good insight
into Philipp Melanchthon, humanist and reformer,
Luther’s closest associate and influential “praeceptor
germaniae” (Teacher of Germany).
The Luther House in Wittenberg was the main place
where Martin Luther lived and worked for almost
35 years. He lived here as a monk and, from 1525, as a
husband and father. He made his “reformatory discov-
ery” here, he lectured to students from all over Europe
here, and he wrote his works that changed the world in
this house. Today, the Luther House is the world’s
largest museum relating to the history of the Reforma-
tion. Entitled „Martin Luther – his life, his work and his
impact“, the new permanent exhibition focuses on
aspects of his life that are unique to this town: MartinLuther in Wittenberg, the Luther family’s everyday life
and the story of the impact made by this great re-
former. Today’s visitors are drawn by the experience of
visiting Luther’s actual home, as they have been for
centuries. The Luther room has a special atmosphere; it
is the very place where the reformer discussed his
beliefs. Other impressive rooms are the refectory and
the great auditorium where there is a magnificent
historic exhibition. Some of the most striking items on
permanent display are Luther’s pulpit,his monk’s habit,
numerous paintings by Lucas Cranach the Elder, such
as the Ten Commandments Panel, the academic lectern

DDr Martin Luther was certain that Torgau’s buildings are
more beautiful than any from ancient times: even King
Solomon’s temple was only built of wood.
Visitors to the town can still see for themselves that the
reformer was right. Torgau’s imposing 16th century town
centre has been miraculously preserved almost intact to
this day. Its 500 Renaissance and late-Gothic style archi-
tectural monuments form an urban ensemble of inter-
national standing. Hartenfels Palace, the best preserved
early Renaissance palace in Germany, and the magnifi-
cent town hall that dominates the market square, are the
highlights in an impressive historic townscape. The fore-
most example of Renaissance architecture in Torgau is theGrosser Wendelstein,an open spiral stairwell built in 1533-
1536 by Konrad Krebs on the main building of Hartenfels
Palace. The elegant stairway soars upward for two storeys,
with no additional support. Visitors encounter the first
sculptural portrait of Luther on a medallion in the upper
entrance.
The Palace Chapel is situated in the one of the wings. The
chapel was consecrated on 5 October 1544 by Martin
Luther and is widely regarded as the first to be built as a
Protestant church. It bears witness to the first time thatthe spiritual programme of the Reformation was em-
bodied in architecture and art. Torgau’s palace was the
seat of the Electors of Saxony of the Wettin dynasty’s
Ernestine line. Electors Frederick the Wise, John the

Steadfast and John Frederick the Magnanimous in partic-
ular were patrons and sponsors of Lutheran ideas. Their
political influence ensured that the new beliefs were
disseminated throughout their realm. In 1526, the region’srulers, who were supporters of the Reformation, formed
the Association of Torgau. Torgau became the political
centre of the Reformation. Traditionally, Wittenberg is
known as the „mother of the Reformation“ while Torgau
is dubbed the „wet-nurse of the Reformation“.
