Letter From The PresidentDear Parents and Staff,

This is such a great time of year, a time to give thanks. We are so lucky to have such an involved Walnut Hills community – students, teachers, administrators, staff, parents, extended family, and alumni! We see commitment in so many ways, too, and an excellent example was through our successful Walnut24, a student-led fundraiser!

WHHS AssociationWalnut24 a ‘great success’The 2012 Walnut24 fundraiser in September attracted more than 600 Walnut Hills students — running, jumping, drawing and thinking in 24 events over a 12-hour period. The annual event made the switch from a walkathon to a field-day format in what Principal Jeff Brokamp declared “a great success.”

With the format change, students were a little timid getting involved at first but by the end of the day, many were pleading to do “one more round” of relay races and Pictionary.

Students were divided into four different color “teams” and earned points for competing in each event. The team with the most points at the end were given a pizza party at school during a lunch hour. Seniors got into the competition by issuing a challenge to all classes to see which could raise the most money. To their surprise,

the seventh grade, Class of 2018, came out as the winner and also participated in the pizza party.

The money raised, approximately $25,000, will go to offset the cost for club advisors and coaches’ stipends which runs $125,000 annually. Many schools in the area are cutting club, sports, music and arts programs because of the funding cuts. Walnut Hills has decided to keep these programs and devised the Walnut24 fundraiser to help defray the costs.

The Walnut24 Committee is made up of parent volunteers who plan year-round for this event. A special thanks to committee members Doug Newberry, Nicole Dyehouse, Marci Koch, Alicia Brockwell, Carol Philpot, Bill Ryan, Renata Scanio, Susan Shelton, Stephanie Thomson and all the members of the student committee. Big thanks, too, to all the parent and student volunteers who helped on the day of the event.

Planning for the 2013 Walnut24 is just getting started. If you, or your student, want to be part of the fun, contact Doug Newberry via email, [email protected]

And be sure to check out Scott Tengen’s excellent Walnut24 photos at http://tengenphoto.com/photocart/index.php?do=photocart&viewGallery=1095, with proceeds from sales going to the event account.

Principal makes news – againSometimes it seems like Walnut Principal Jeff Brokamp is everywhere. He’s on the home answering machine. He sends mail via USPS. He shows up at many athletic events. And he’s ever-present in the halls of Walnut.

He also knows how to use media to keep Walnut top of mind. The latest examples:

• He’sthestarinanewvideoontheWHHSWebsite,postedonthemainpageatwww.walnuthillseagles.com. The production includes an interview with Brokamp, intercut with scenes of students in classrooms and elsewhere in the building, all to support the annual Legacy of Excellence effort.

7th-graders travel to AustriaWalnut Hills was well represented in Graz, Austria, over the summer as four Walnut seventh-graders traveled there with CISV, previously known as Children’s International Summer Village.

Nate Allison, Zoey Seibert, Heinrich Huelsman and Jason Hipskind were part of an interchange delegation representing Cincinnati and the USA. It was a second CISV trip for Nate, Zoey and Jason, who traveled to Denmark last year.

The Summer Village Program provide a multilingual and multicultural experience for 11-year-olds, allowing them to participate in a mix of educational, cultural and sporting activities. Children from 12 countries participate in the Village program simultaneously, so they are exposed to many cultures at once.

This summer, Nate, Heinrich, Zoey, and Jason hosted an Austria student in Cincinnati for three weeks, taking in Reds baseball, Kings Island, Little Miami rafting and other local sites. They then flew to Austria to stay with their host families, visiting Salzburg, Vienna, and the Alpine mountains among other venues. They returned home with a heightened appreciation for Austria, the German language, local foods, and cultural customs.

Children’s International Summer Village, the pre-eminent children’s peace education organization in the world, is now recruiting for its summer 2013 programs, with applications due Dec. 15. For more information, visit www.cincinnati.cisvusa.org. For questions, contact Walnut parent Karen Huelsman at [email protected] or Cincinnati CISV President Alena O’Donnell at [email protected].

She currently studies pointe ballet and modern dance. At school she plays clarinet in the Senior Band and plans to join the track team in the spring. Marissa and her Cadette Troop also visited Washington D.C. over the summer for “Rock the Mall,” a 100th anniversary celebration of Girl Scouting. Marissa’s favorite: A trip to the National Museum of Natural History.
