RAILS-TO-TRAILS ROUTE

• Equipment Rental• Organic Restaurant Rooftop

The Health Hub idea is to create a space & site to enhance the quality of life in Lyon County thru healthy living. Specifically, the concept provides on-site healthy options for physical activity, eating well and better-connectivity with the community as business district, a town and a county. Physically, the plan integrates Lyon’s towns through the abandoned rails-to-trails, which allows for a variety of recreational activities along pleasant greenscapes.

EAT WELL

• Community Organic Garden

• Community Kitchen

• Mobile Smoothie & Catering Service

EAT WELL• Access to fresh produce and foods is essential to creating a culture of healthy living. The Health Hub offers members access to a community garden to cultivate fresh crops, as well as an opportunity to utilize the community kitchen. The organic restaurant, smoothie bar and rooftop provide a place for consuming these meals & community gathering. The workspace on the north-side also is the garage to the smoothie & catering truck, which can extend a healthy reach to local events.

LIVE WELL• Living well begins with opportunities for a variety of physical activities, both indoors and outdoors. The rails-to-trails provides access for runners, bicyclists, skiers and more. It connects through Rock Rapids (and potentially other communities) and with existing assets, such as parks (i.e. Island Park) and businesses (Farmer’s Market across the street). The Hub building provides equipment, fitness classes, personal training, physical therapy, and healthy pre- and post- activity eating.

For a comprehensive studio project, we were to design a contemporary music hall for 3 indoor performances spaces and one outdoor, as well as a plaza and other given functional requisites. The site was Dusable Park in Chicago, so incorporating views to the south and east was a goal, as was integrating the Riverwalk into the circulation of the building and plaza. Other design features include: Gaussian brick vaults, operable window and curtain wall system, and landscape on structure with a parking garage below.

In teams, we were to create a “net-zero” 5-home development for Habitat for Humanity of Des Moines. We learned & applied principles of passive & active energy systems to power the homes, with specific concern for addressing environmentally-friendly and zero-carbon sources. In addition, we measured individual house energy metrics and cost-effectiveness.

[right] A staggared double-stud wall construction is used, which minimizes required lumber, maximizes interior space for insulation, and makes for economical and volunteer-friendly assembly of materials.

[left] Balloon framing techniques envelope the homes’ split-level floors, which allows for continuous insulation from foundation to roof. the split level plans enable a reduced earth footprint and foundation pouring costs.

It also meant considering a second program for the bathhouse; bicycling, in the case of this project related directly back to the context of downtown and Ames.

After studying bathhouse precedents & being introduced to software, this assignment was to design a bathhouse on the edge of the Ames downtown district. The site is at a transition point between residential homes (north & west) and the commercial district across Grand Ave. (east). It also is just north of the popular Wheatsfield grocery and is somewhat elevated above a steep incline which can induce flooding with downpours.

DEVELOP

the context, the site, and the function.

The process work began considering the context of downtown, in terms of history and present day activities, as well as the circulation and natural factors influencing the site. It also meant considering a second program for the bathhouse; bicycling, in the case of this project related directly back to the context of downtown and Ames.

With this, the design incorporates a site that functions as a small landscaped park for gathering, with vegetation to hold as much rainfall as possible on site. The terrain and bicycle/pedestrian path flows into the covered (+1) ground level. This bike-friendly level accesses a rental & repair shop, intended to be a public collaborative which is jointly operated by the 3 downtown bicycle stores. The large covered space segues into the multi-level bathhouse, with baths & massage on the lower level, baths on the middle (+1) level, and cylcing/aerobics room & indoor/outdoor bath on the upper (+2) floor.

Page 14: Adam Winkelmann - Architecture Portfolio Sample

This first-year assingment was to propose a new intervention & program for an iconic building. Although this particular final program and scheme are certainly forced, especially with respect to Sullivan’s original vision, the end goal was to moreover assert a reinterpretation of the structure as a space for music & spoken performances. With this, I tried to develop skills communicating the architecture through the means of only pencil and certain model materials.
