Die A lpen – Mythos

und Wirk l ichke i t

Als Johann Wolfgang von Goethe zum ersten Mal die Alpen sah, fühlte er sich von ihrem Anblick „herrlich belohnt“. Und das zu einer Zeit, als die hohen Berge vom Menschen noch kaum erforscht waren. Für die Zeitgenossen des Dichters waren die Alpen unwegsames Gelände, verbunden mit vielen Gefahren. Sichere Wege, schützende Unterkünfte waren eine Seltenheit.

Heute, 200 Jahre nach Goethes staunendem Anblick, denken wir manchmal mit Wehmut an die Zeiten zurück, als ganze Täler vom Menschen unberührt waren. Und trotz Verkehrs, trotz Tourismus sind die Alpen noch immer ein Mythos, sind ein Magnet mit großer Anziehungskraft.

Die Alpen kennen viele Superlative. Sie sind Europas höchstes Gebirge, der größte Wasserspeicher des Konti-nents. Sie sind ein faszinierender Kultur- und Lebensraum für Menschen, Tiere und Pflanzen. Sie sind ein Traum, für viele eine schöne Wirklichkeit.

Über ihre Entstehung wissen wir mittlerweile mehr, als Goethe sich je erträumen ließ. Vor Millionen von Jahren driftete die afrikanische Kontinentalplatte Richtung Norden und verzahnte sich mit der europä-ischen Platte. Wo einst ein Meer war, ragten im Lauf vieler Zeitalter die Gipfel empor. So finden sich mancher-orts noch Versteinerungen von Korallen und Muscheln in den Bergen.

Lange vor Goethe wagten sich die ersten Menschen ins Gebirge vor. Ein Beweis für die frühe Präsenz liefert Ötzi, die berühmte Mumie aus dem Ötztal. Bekannt ist die Geschichte von Hannibal, der später samt Armee und Elefanten die Alpen überquerte. Für seinen Feind, die Römer, war es wiederum wesentlich, Verbindungs-routen durch das Gebirge zu bauen, um die nördlichen Teile ihres Reichs zu erschließen.

Doch erst im 20. Jahrhundert wurden großflächig Straßen, Brücken und Tunnels errichtet. Die Alpen wurden endgültig für jedermann zugänglich.

Und mittlerweile lebt fast die Hälfte der österreichischen Bevölkerung in den Alpen, vier der größten Städte des Landes befinden sich direkt in ihnen oder an ihren Rändern.

Die Alpen sind ein äußerst vielfältiges Ökosystem. Hier existiert ein unglaublicher Reichtum an Vegetations-räumen, Pflanzen- und Tiergemeinschaften. So prägen satte Wiesen, Moore, Auen und Wälder das Bild der niedrigen Höhenstufen. Sommerweiden, Stauden und Polsterpflanzen sind charakteristisch für die alpinen Regionen. Und über allem thronen, nah an den Wolken, die Gletscher.

Wir laden Sie ein, sich ein Bild von der Schönheit der Alpen zu machen. Besuchen Sie uns in Hochgurgl. Steigen Sie in die Seilbahn und werfen Sie einen Blick vom 3082 Meter hohen Wurmkogel über die Gipfel Nord- und Südtirols.

Hochgurgl liegt im Ötztal, einer Region der Alpen- Rekorde. Dieses Tal ist das einzige in Europa, das fünf Vegetationsstufen aufweist. So beträgt der Höhen-unterschied von seinem Eingang bis zum höchsten Berg, der Wildspitze, über 3000 Meter!

Die Bewohner des Ötztals sprechen den ältesten Dialekt Österreichs, der von der UNESCO bereits zum Weltkulturerbe erklärt wurde. Darauf und auf viele weitere Superlative sind wir stolz. Etwa, dass das Ötztal die höchste „Massenerhebung“ der Ostalpen ist. Über 300 Dreitausender befinden sich in einem einzigen Tal!

Übrigens: Der Name Gurgl wird auf das Wort „Gurgall“ zurückgeführt, was „Ort im Gletscherkranz“ bedeutet. Treffend!

Legend and Rea l i ty

When Johann Wolfgang von Goethe saw the Alps for the first time, he felt “wonderfully rewarded” at the sight of them. And that was still at a time when the high mountains had hardly been explored by man. In the opinion of the writer’s contemporaries, the Alps were an impassable terrain and associated with many a peril. Secure paths and shelter-providing accommo-dations were but seldom available.

Today, 200 years after Goethe’s amazed gaze, nostalgia sometimes arises when we think back on times when entire valleys remained untouched by man. And despite the traffic and tourism, the Alps remain both a legend and a magnet with great allure.

The Alps offer a wide range of superlatives. They are the highest mountain range in Europe and the largest water supply on the continent. They are a fas-cinating cultural region and habitat for people, flora and fauna. They are a dream, and for many a beautiful reality.

We now know more about their creation than Goethe could ever have imagined. Millions of years ago, the African continental plate shifted to the north and interlocked with the European plate. Where there was once a sea, the peaks of the mountains slowly rose over the course of the many ages. For this reason, you can still discover fossilised corals and mussels at some places in the mountains.

Long before Goethe, the first humans dared to delve into the mountains. Proof of their early presence is provided by Ötzi, the famous mummy from the valley of the Ötztal. Also well known is the story of Hannibal, who later crossed the Alps with his army and elephants. For his enemy, the Romans, on the other hand, it was imperative to establish routes through the mountains in order to make the northern regions of their empire accessible.

It was not until the 20th century, though, that roads, bridges and tunnels were built on a large scale. The Alps were then finally accessible to everyone. And, in the

meantime, almost half of the Austrian population lives in the Alps, and four of the country’s largest cities are located either directly in the Alps or in the immediate vicinity.

The Alps are an extremely diverse ecosystem. There is an incredible wealth of vegetation zones as well as symbiosis between plants and animals. For instance, lush meadows, moors, riparian landscapes and forests characterise the image of the lower altitudes. Summer pastures, shrubs and cushion plants are characteristic of the Alpine regions. And perched high above it all, practically in the clouds, are the glaciers.

We invite you to get an impression of the beauty of the Alps. Visit us in Hochgurgl. Take the cable car and enjoy the view of the peaks of northern and southern Tyrol from the perspective offered by the 3,082-metre Wurmkogel.

Hochgurgl is located in the valley of the Ötztal, a region that holds Alpine records. This valley is the only

one in Europe to offer five vegetation zones. For this reason, the difference in altitude between the entrance to the valley and the highest mountain, the Wildspitze, amounts to more than 3,000 metres!

The people in the Ötztal speak the oldest dialect in Austria, which has already been declared part of the world cultural heritage by the UNESCO. We are proud of that and of a great many other superlatives. For instance, that the Ötztal is the highest “mountain mass elevation” in the Eastern Alps. More than 300 3,000-metre peaks can be found in just one valley!

By the way: The name “Gurgl” is derived from the word “Gurgall”, which means “place on the glacier rim.” How befitting!

Väterchen Frost zaubert Eiskristalle ans Fenster, Schneeflocken wirbeln

durch die klirrende Winternacht, doch unsere Seele wärmt sich an einem

guten Glas Rotwein oder einem feinen Whisky am Kaminfeuer. Die Füße
