Lerninhalte

This two-hour writing course centers on the response paper. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able- to express themselves clearly at the sentence and paragraph levels- to utilize critical reading skills for their academic writing- to differentiate between conventions in spoken and written English- to comprehend and correctly utilize lexical, grammatical, and organizational patterns of effective written communication- to draft, evaluate, and edit their own and others' texts effectively (peer review)- to cite appropriate sources properly (MLA)

Students are required to submit assignments on a regular basis. Independent study is an integral component of the course.Students are strongly encouraged to attend the English Academic Writing Tutorial. (Your instructor will provide you withinformation; see also the departmental website.)

This course helps students master oral communication of an informative, explanatory, and persuasive nature throughpresenting and debating. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able- to understand and identify the principles of these genres- to structure and present an academic presentation in English effectively- to present complex subjects; integrating sub-themes and developing particular points- to formulate their ideas and opinions with precision and utilize appropriate language- to relate their contributions skilfully to those of other speakers- to round off with an appropriate conclusion- to respond to audience questions with confidenceStudents are required to participate in weekly class discussions. Lerninhalte

This two-hour writing course centers on essay writing and the argumentative essay in particular. Upon completion of thiscourse, students will be able- to express themselves using nuanced language (improved accuracy and appropriacy of writing)- to produce cohesive and coherent academic writing (improved complexity and effectiveness of writing)- to identify and produce various types of academic texts- to evaluate their own and others' texts (peer review)- to assess and cite (MLA) appropriate sources properly

Students are required to submit assignments on a regular basis. Independent study is an integral component of the course.Students are strongly encouraged to attend the English Academic Writing Tutorial. (Your instructor will provide you withinformation; see also the departmental website.)

It aims tointroduce students to the nature of language and the major domains of linguistic inquiry as well as to provide an understandingof basic concepts, principles and tools in the following areas: Phonetics, Phonology, Morphology and Lexical Semantics.There will be weekly exercises and a mock exam. Students are encouraged to acquire a copy of the textbook (see below)before the beginning of the semester. In case tutorials are offered for this course, see the bulletin board at the beginning ofthe semester for times and places. It is strongly recommended that students attend one of these tutorials regularly. Notice:For the new teacher training BA program (Studienordnung WS 13/14) and the new BA program (Studienordnung WS 15/16),this course together with Introduction to Synchronic Linguistics, Part II will form the Basic Module in Linguistics (BM-Lin). It exploresthe linguistic roots of English, the changes in pronunciation and loss of inflections, as well as the enormous expansion invocabulary which characterizes the development of English. We will also consider the different varieties of English in evidencetoday and the similarities and dissimilarities between German and English. Among the difficulties encountered by ESLstudents are the English system of tenses as well as the discrepancy between spelling and pronunciation: these will all bedealt with in this series of lectures.

Short examples from some of the earliest texts will be used to illustrate the characteristics of OldEnglish. We will examine how some features of the modern language and many so-called ”exceptions” can be explained interms of the earlier language.Particular attention will be paid to the lexical, grammatical and phonological features of Old English. Students will be asked toacquire a minimal basic vocabulary and to translate Old-English texts into either Modern English or German. The course alsooffers an introduction to historical linguistics and demonstrates its usefulness for teachers of the modern language.

Sociolinguistics deals with the social life of language, language in its sociocultural context. It is a branch of linguistics thatlooks at how our words and sentences are influenced by the society around us, for instance, how the accent or the dialect weuse has been shaped by where we come from or which social status group we belong to. Have you ever wondered why interaction is as unproblematic as it is? Why, for instance, do we manage to take turns inconversation without constantly interrupting each other? How do we know what our co-participants are trying to achieve withtheir utterances, and how do we accomplish larger projects? Why do we generally understand each other – and how do wedeal with mis understandings, slips of the tongue, or excessive background noise? These questions have been investigatedby conversation analysts for about fifty years, and generally, we now understand the mechanisms underlying everydayconversation quite well. However, from the very beginning, CA literature has pointed out that ‘institutional’ forms of interaction,such as classroom talk, systematically differ from conversation in terms of these mechanisms – to a greater or lesser degree –and that it may be these differences that help us recognize that participants are engaging in, for instance, business meetings,courtroom interaction, classroom talk or police interrogations.

This class will serve as an introduction to basic assumptions, methods and findings of Conversation Analysis (CA). Wewill discuss general principles of turn-taking, sequence organization and repair in conversation and, on that basis, identifycharacteristic features of classroom talk, business meetings and other types of institutional interaction.

This course aims at interrogating the idea of modernity as salvation. It is designed to give an overview of approaches tomodernity and salvation. In a second step, we will apply these theories to literary examples. Throughout the semester, youwill create and refine research theses, which you will work into term papers. You are required to briefly introduce one text fordiscussion in class.

Upon completion of the course, you will be able to– define and classify different approaches to modernity and salvation– contrast, discuss, and criticize theoretical texts– apply theory to different literary examples– formulate research theses and write research papers

This course explores American literature and culture through what has been called its uniquely national art form, the shortstory. Writer Ann Patchett likens reading short stories to the experience of a swarm of bees, ”blocking out sound and sunand becoming the only thing you can think about.” We’ll be doing a lot of thinking about the short story—as a literary art form,as a social and historical record, and as a reflection of the cultural values that shape collective identities. From the ghostsand fantasies that haunted the nineteenth-century short story to the casual cruelties and everyday redemptions in twentieth-century stories to today’s experimental fictions, the short story represents diverse visions of American identity and experience.We will thus roam widely to construct methods for thinking about and a critical vocabulary for discussing and writing about theshort story. Students will examine the genre, learning about its formal structures and strategies, as well as its place in differentcultural and historical contexts.

This seminar will introduce students to the work and life of Herman Melville, one of the most canonical authors of 19th centuryAmerican Literature. As the year 2019 marks the 200th anniversary of his birth, this seminar will approach the author from arenewed perspective of both traditional and contemporary methods of scholarly work.

We will study the historical, philosophical and aesthetic context(s) of Melville’s origins on land and at sea by combiningclassical and analog approaches to literature (close readings) with the novel methods and tools from the Digital Humanities(DH). Previous experience in dealing with Digital Humanities methods is not required. However, a basic affinity for digital andcomputational tools is expected.

Largely neglected during his lifetime, H.P. Lovecraft's horror/weird fiction has seen an unparalleled trajectory of posthumousfame. His central tropes — such as elder gods seeking a return to power, cosmic indifference to human achievements, andindividuals destroyed by the knowledge they pursue — have inspired not only countless writers and artists but also anythingin popular culture from board games to heavy metal songs. More recently, philosophical inquiries, too, have found his fictionaloutput stimulating. However, Lovecraft’s enormous contemporary prominence has also lent urgency to interrogations of hispolitical views. Racism and xenophobia not only pervade his œuvre, but are also often constitutive of the horror his storiesevoke. He remains a troublesome icon of horror and weird fiction, as widely derided as admired.

This reading-intensive class is intended as an introduction to Lovecraft's fiction. We will read a number of classic stories andsample some scholarly perspectives on his work. Students will practise close reading, formulate thesis statements, and reflecton their own reading experiences. Discussions will revolve around both political and aesthetic aspects of Lovecraft’s fiction.

Voraussetzung

Participants should be prepared to read a lot and to share their thoughts on the texts orally and in writing. Previous knowledgeof Lovecraft in particular or horror/weird fiction in general is not required.

In this seminar we will look at literary and cultural abortion narratives. Abortion has become a hotly contested subject inrecent years and we will trace historical changes in the discourse on it. We will also read and analyse abortion fiction, criticallyevaluate studies on this topic, and deconstruct arguments that have remained closely tied to this debate until today. Theseminar mostly considers abortion in an Anglo-American context.

Please note that this seminar focuses on women's rights and therefore follows a pro-choice/ pro-abortion line of argument.

This course aims at discussing a range of novels and texts by or about British women writers between 1750 and 1850 underthe viewpoint of feminist literary criticism. The focus will be on women's agency, the influence of feminist theory on women'swriting over the years, as well as historical contexts and circumstances influencing women writer's of the above-mentionedtime period.

This course will be reading-intensive and regular attendance as well as active participation in class will be expected.

Please begin reading Emma already as this will be the first novel discussed. Helen is available as an e-publication, the otherthree books are available at most second-hand bookshops.

You will be expected to write an essay of approx. 4,000 words. Throughout the seminar you will learn to formulate a thesis,develop a structure, research the appropriate literature, and, in the end, produce said essay, which will be concerned withan aspect of the topic in general or a specific sub-topic we discuss. Said thesis, structure, and literature choice will have tobe handed in over the course of the semester so that you can develop your essay as we move through the topic. This iscompulsory in order to pass this course.

In addition to this, you are expected to prepare for each session to enable you to take part in in-class discussions andexercises. You will also be encouraged to provide feedback to others while you yourself will also be given feedback bymembers of the class.

6 ECTS

If you are taking this course as a 'b-Seminar' you will be required to write an additional module paper of approx. 6,000 words.This may or may not be connected to the topic of this course. With the beginning of European modernity in the Renaissance, the literary genre of the utopia – the construction of imaginarysocieties and polities as alternatives to the actually existent ones – becomes increasingly important. What are the historicalfactors that make this kind of writing so popular in the period from ca. 1500 to 1700? How is the interest in utopian writingrelated to the intensifying relations between Europe and overseas societies, many of which were remarkably different from thefamiliar? Is utopia, then, an inherently colonialist genre? Or is the utopian literary imagination tied in with a more general urgeto ”imagine the present otherwise”, which the French theorist Michel Foucault has identified as typical of modern sensibilitiesat large? And how, if at all, do the early utopias from Thomas More to Margaret Cavendish ‘speak to us’ today in a periodwhere the slogan that ‘another world is possible’ appears to have, again, lost its force?

In our seminar, we will discuss these and other questions based on in-depth analyses of four influential early modern utopias:Thomas More’s Utopia (1516), Francis Bacon’s The New Atlantis (1627), Henry Neville’s The Isle of Pines (1668) andMargaret Cavendish’s The Blazing World (1668).

Contemporary literature and culture show an immense fascination with the Victorian age. The period is frequently representedas modernity’s other, characterised by prudery and the repression of sexuality. Yet, as Michel Foucault has famously stressed,we remain profoundly influenced by the discourses, conventions and ideas of the nineteenth century. Our course will studyNeo-Victorian texts from the past two decades that often playfully engage with the period, challenging and revising Victorianthemes and throwing a light on those forgotten in standard accounts of the nineteenth century. Discussing Sarah WatersTipping the Velvet (1998), Matthew Kneales’ English Passengers (2002) and the BBC series Sherlock (2010-17), we willgain insights into the complex interactions between our (post)modern present and the Victorian past. Our focus will lie oncontemporary revisions and (re)constructions of Victorian notions of gender/sexuality, race, and class.

British women writers of the 1930s are often neglected in English literary history. The decade, situated between two worldwars, was characterised by political and ideological conflict and economic instability. Aesthetically, the continuous influence ofmodernism as well as traditional forms like the domestic novel shaped the literary landscape of the 1930s. In this seminar we will look at literary and cultural abortion narratives. Abortion has become a hotly contested subject inrecent years and we will trace historical changes in the discourse on it. We will also read and analyse abortion fiction, criticallyevaluate studies on this topic, and deconstruct arguments that have remained closely tied to this debate until today. Theseminar mostly considers abortion in an Anglo-American context.

Please note that this seminar focuses on women's rights and therefore follows a pro-choice/ pro-abortion line of argument.

April 2019 sees the 300-year anniversary of the publication of Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe (full title, almost a novel itself:The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, Of York, Mariner: Who lived Eight and Twenty Years, allalone in an un-inhabited Island on the Coast of America, near the Mouth of the Great River of Oroonoque; Having been caston Shore by Shipwreck, wherein all the Men perished but himself. With An Account how he was at last as strangely deliver'dby Pyrates ). This seminar takes this opportunity to (re-)read the novel, to contemplate its canonical status (and to think aboutwhat makes a canon), to consider the context of its publication (and the contexts of our own readings), as well as to addressand discuss various critiques of the text (including fictional, audio-visual and other artistic engagements). We will engage indiscussions shaped by theories from Gender Studies, Postcolonial Studies and the Environmental Humanities.

Students are required to have access to the Norton Critical Edition of Robinson Crusoe (second edition, ISBN:978-0393964523), and will be asked to read/watch two other novels, some audio-visual materials, as well as critical essaysthroughout the semester. This course aims at discussing a range of novels and texts by or about British women writers between 1750 and 1850 underthe viewpoint of feminist literary criticism. The focus will be on women's agency, the influence of feminist theory on women'swriting over the years, as well as historical contexts and circumstances influencing women writer's of the above-mentionedtime period.

This course will be reading-intensive and regular attendance as well as active participation in class will be expected.

You will be expected to write an essay of approx. 4,000 words. Throughout the seminar you will learn to formulate a thesis,develop a structure, research the appropriate literature, and, in the end, produce said essay, which will be concerned withan aspect of the topic in general or a specific sub-topic we discuss. Said thesis, structure, and literature choice will have tobe handed in over the course of the semester so that you can develop your essay as we move through the topic. This iscompulsory in order to pass this course.

In addition to this, you are expected to prepare for each session to enable you to take part in in-class discussions andexercises. You will also be encouraged to provide feedback to others while you yourself will also be given feedback bymembers of the class.

6 ECTS

If you are taking this course as a 'b-Seminar' you will be required to write an additional module paper of approx. 6,000 words.This may or may not be connected to the topic of this course. If you plan on writing this module paper, please approach mebefore or after class or send me an email with an idea of the topic you would like to discuss.

With the beginning of European modernity in the Renaissance, the literary genre of the utopia – the construction of imaginarysocieties and polities as alternatives to the actually existent ones – becomes increasingly important. What are the historicalfactors that make this kind of writing so popular in the period from ca. 1500 to 1700? How is the interest in utopian writingrelated to the intensifying relations between Europe and overseas societies, many of which were remarkably different from thefamiliar? Is utopia, then, an inherently colonialist genre? Or is the utopian literary imagination tied in with a more general urgeto ”imagine the present otherwise”, which the French theorist Michel Foucault has identified as typical of modern sensibilitiesat large? And how, if at all, do the early utopias from Thomas More to Margaret Cavendish ‘speak to us’ today in a periodwhere the slogan that ‘another world is possible’ appears to have, again, lost its force?

In our seminar, we will discuss these and other questions based on in-depth analyses of four influential early modern utopias:Thomas More’s Utopia (1516), Francis Bacon’s The New Atlantis (1627), Henry Neville’s The Isle of Pines (1668) andMargaret Cavendish’s The Blazing World (1668).

This course is concerned with the history and memory of the Kindertransport, the scheme which brought Jewish child refugees

to Britain from Nazi Europe before the outbreak of the Second World War, the 80 th anniversary of which is being celebratedin 2018/2019. On the basis of narratives and memoirs, we will consider how the scheme is remembered in the British publicmemory and is instrumentalised in discussions around migration, citizenship and belonging, and the so-called refugee crisis.

Contemporary literature and culture show an immense fascination with the Victorian age. The period is frequently representedas modernity’s other, characterised by prudery and the repression of sexuality. Yet, as Michel Foucault has famously stressed,we remain profoundly influenced by the discourses, conventions and ideas of the nineteenth century. Our course will studyNeo-Victorian texts from the past two decades that often playfully engage with the period, challenging and revising Victorianthemes and throwing a light on those forgotten in standard accounts of the nineteenth century. Discussing Sarah WatersTipping the Velvet (1998), Matthew Kneales’ English Passengers (2002) and the BBC series Sherlock (2010-17), we willgain insights into the complex interactions between our (post)modern present and the Victorian past. Our focus will lie oncontemporary revisions and (re)constructions of Victorian notions of gender/sexuality, race, and class.

Britain’s tight Brexit vote of 2016 is generally taken to express deep divisions across the nation: 52% vs. 38%, England vs.Scotland vs. Wales vs. Northern Ireland, liberal vs. conservative, old vs. young, affluent vs. poor, etc.Our class sets out to investigate contradictory reactions to the referendum across politics and the media, as Britain continuesits negotiations with the European Union in 2019. We will also consider a variety of creative negotiations of the referendumby probing into the imaginative power of literature, film, comedy and other media. How do these cultural texts imagine a post-Brexit Britain?

British women writers of the 1930s are often neglected in English literary history. The decade, situated between two worldwars, was characterised by political and ideological conflict and economic instability. Aesthetically, the continuous influence ofmodernism as well as traditional forms like the domestic novel shaped the literary landscape of the 1930s. In this seminar, wewill read novels which all deal with these conflicts and contradictions in their own way.

In this seminar we will look at literary and cultural abortion narratives. Abortion has become a hotly contested subject inrecent years and we will trace historical changes in the discourse on it. We will also read and analyse abortion fiction, criticallyevaluate studies on this topic, and deconstruct arguments that have remained closely tied to this debate until today. Theseminar mostly considers abortion in an Anglo-American context.

Please note that this seminar focuses on women's rights and therefore follows a pro-choice/ pro-abortion line of argument.

April 2019 sees the 300-year anniversary of the publication of Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe (full title, almost a novel itself:The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, Of York, Mariner: Who lived Eight and Twenty Years, allalone in an un-inhabited Island on the Coast of America, near the Mouth of the Great River of Oroonoque; Having been caston Shore by Shipwreck, wherein all the Men perished but himself. With An Account how he was at last as strangely deliver'dby Pyrates ). This seminar takes this opportunity to (re-)read the novel, to contemplate its canonical status (and to think aboutwhat makes a canon), to consider the context of its publication (and the contexts of our own readings), as well as to addressand discuss various critiques of the text (including fictional, audio-visual and other artistic engagements). We will engage indiscussions shaped by theories from Gender Studies, Postcolonial Studies and the Environmental Humanities.

Students are required to have access to the Norton Critical Edition of Robinson Crusoe (second edition, ISBN:978-0393964523), and will be asked to read/watch two other novels, some audio-visual materials, as well as critical essaysthroughout the semester. It is recommended that students begin reading Robinson Crusoe prior to the beginning of semester.

We will study the historical, philosophical and aesthetic context(s) of Melville’s origins on land and at sea by combiningclassical and analog approaches to literature (close readings) with the novel methods and tools from the Digital Humanities(DH). Previous experience in dealing with Digital Humanities methods is not required. However, a basic affinity for digital andcomputational tools is expected.

In this seminar we will look at literary and cultural abortion narratives. Abortion has become a hotly contested subject inrecent years and we will trace historical changes in the discourse on it. We will also read and analyse abortion fiction, criticallyevaluate studies on this topic, and deconstruct arguments that have remained closely tied to this debate until today. Theseminar mostly considers abortion in an Anglo-American context.

Please note that this seminar focuses on women's rights and therefore follows a pro-choice/ pro-abortion line of argument.

April 2019 sees the 300-year anniversary of the publication of Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe (full title, almost a novel itself:The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, Of York, Mariner: Who lived Eight and Twenty Years, allalone in an un-inhabited Island on the Coast of America, near the Mouth of the Great River of Oroonoque; Having been caston Shore by Shipwreck, wherein all the Men perished but himself. With An Account how he was at last as strangely deliver'dby Pyrates ). This seminar takes this opportunity to (re-)read the novel, to contemplate its canonical status (and to think aboutwhat makes a canon), to consider the context of its publication (and the contexts of our own readings), as well as to addressand discuss various critiques of the text (including fictional, audio-visual and other artistic engagements). We will engage indiscussions shaped by theories from Gender Studies, Postcolonial Studies and the Environmental Humanities.

Students are required to have access to the Norton Critical Edition of Robinson Crusoe (second edition, ISBN:978-0393964523), and will be asked to read/watch two other novels, some audio-visual materials, as well as critical essaysthroughout the semester. It is recommended that students begin reading Robinson Crusoe prior to the beginning of semester.

This course explores American literature and culture through what has been called its uniquely national art form, the shortstory. Writer Ann Patchett likens reading short stories to the experience of a swarm of bees, ”blocking out sound and sunand becoming the only thing you can think about.” We’ll be doing a lot of thinking about the short story—as a literary art form,as a social and historical record, and as a reflection of the cultural values that shape collective identities. From the ghostsand fantasies that haunted the nineteenth-century short story to the casual cruelties and everyday redemptions in twentieth-century stories to today’s experimental fictions, the short story represents diverse visions of American identity and experience.We will thus roam widely to construct methods for thinking about and a critical vocabulary for discussing and writing about theshort story. Students will examine the genre, learning about its formal structures and strategies, as well as its place in differentcultural and historical contexts.

Largely neglected during his lifetime, H.P. Lovecraft's horror/weird fiction has seen an unparalleled trajectory of posthumousfame. His central tropes — such as elder gods seeking a return to power, cosmic indifference to human achievements, andindividuals destroyed by the knowledge they pursue — have inspired not only countless writers and artists but also anythingin popular culture from board games to heavy metal songs. More recently, philosophical inquiries, too, have found his fictionaloutput stimulating. However, Lovecraft’s enormous contemporary prominence has also lent urgency to interrogations of hispolitical views. Racism and xenophobia not only pervade his œuvre, but are also often constitutive of the horror his storiesevoke. He remains a troublesome icon of horror and weird fiction, as widely derided as admired.

This reading-intensive class is intended as an introduction to Lovecraft's fiction. We will read a number of classic stories andsample some scholarly perspectives on his work. Students will practise close reading, formulate thesis statements, and reflecton their own reading experiences. Discussions will revolve around both political and aesthetic aspects of Lovecraft’s fiction.

Voraussetzung

Participants should be prepared to read a lot and to share their thoughts on the texts orally and in writing. Previous knowledgeof Lovecraft in particular or horror/weird fiction in general is not required.

In this seminar we will look at literary and cultural abortion narratives. Abortion has become a hotly contested subject inrecent years and we will trace historical changes in the discourse on it. We will also read and analyse abortion fiction, criticallyevaluate studies on this topic, and deconstruct arguments that have remained closely tied to this debate until today. Theseminar mostly considers abortion in an Anglo-American context.

Please note that this seminar focuses on women's rights and therefore follows a pro-choice/ pro-abortion line of argument.

This course aims at discussing a range of novels and texts by or about British women writers between 1750 and 1850 underthe viewpoint of feminist literary criticism. The focus will be on women's agency, the influence of feminist theory on women'swriting over the years, as well as historical contexts and circumstances influencing women writer's of the above-mentionedtime period.

This course will be reading-intensive and regular attendance as well as active participation in class will be expected.

You will be expected to write an essay of approx. 4,000 words. Throughout the seminar you will learn to formulate a thesis,develop a structure, research the appropriate literature, and, in the end, produce said essay, which will be concerned withan aspect of the topic in general or a specific sub-topic we discuss. Said thesis, structure, and literature choice will have tobe handed in over the course of the semester so that you can develop your essay as we move through the topic. This iscompulsory in order to pass this course.

In addition to this, you are expected to prepare for each session to enable you to take part in in-class discussions andexercises. You will also be encouraged to provide feedback to others while you yourself will also be given feedback bymembers of the class.

With the beginning of European modernity in the Renaissance, the literary genre of the utopia – the construction of imaginarysocieties and polities as alternatives to the actually existent ones – becomes increasingly important. What are the historicalfactors that make this kind of writing so popular in the period from ca. 1500 to 1700? How is the interest in utopian writingrelated to the intensifying relations between Europe and overseas societies, many of which were remarkably different from thefamiliar? Is utopia, then, an inherently colonialist genre? Or is the utopian literary imagination tied in with a more general urgeto ”imagine the present otherwise”, which the French theorist Michel Foucault has identified as typical of modern sensibilitiesat large? And how, if at all, do the early utopias from Thomas More to Margaret Cavendish ‘speak to us’ today in a periodwhere the slogan that ‘another world is possible’ appears to have, again, lost its force?

In our seminar, we will discuss these and other questions based on in-depth analyses of four influential early modern utopias:Thomas More’s Utopia (1516), Francis Bacon’s The New Atlantis (1627), Henry Neville’s The Isle of Pines (1668) andMargaret Cavendish’s The Blazing World (1668).

Contemporary literature and culture show an immense fascination with the Victorian age. The period is frequently representedas modernity’s other, characterised by prudery and the repression of sexuality. Yet, as Michel Foucault has famously stressed,we remain profoundly influenced by the discourses, conventions and ideas of the nineteenth century. Our course will studyNeo-Victorian texts from the past two decades that often playfully engage with the period, challenging and revising Victorianthemes and throwing a light on those forgotten in standard accounts of the nineteenth century. Discussing Sarah WatersTipping the Velvet (1998), Matthew Kneales’ English Passengers (2002) and the BBC series Sherlock (2010-17), we willgain insights into the complex interactions between our (post)modern present and the Victorian past. Our focus will lie oncontemporary revisions and (re)constructions of Victorian notions of gender/sexuality, race, and class.

British women writers of the 1930s are often neglected in English literary history. The decade, situated between two worldwars, was characterised by political and ideological conflict and economic instability. Aesthetically, the continuous influence ofmodernism as well as traditional forms like the domestic novel shaped the literary landscape of the 1930s. In this seminar, wewill read novels which all deal with these conflicts and contradictions in their own way.

April 2019 sees the 300-year anniversary of the publication of Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe (full title, almost a novel itself:The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, Of York, Mariner: Who lived Eight and Twenty Years, allalone in an un-inhabited Island on the Coast of America, near the Mouth of the Great River of Oroonoque; Having been caston Shore by Shipwreck, wherein all the Men perished but himself. With An Account how he was at last as strangely deliver'dby Pyrates ). This seminar takes this opportunity to (re-)read the novel, to contemplate its canonical status (and to think aboutwhat makes a canon), to consider the context of its publication (and the contexts of our own readings), as well as to addressand discuss various critiques of the text (including fictional, audio-visual and other artistic engagements). We will engage indiscussions shaped by theories from Gender Studies, Postcolonial Studies and the Environmental Humanities.

Students are required to have access to the Norton Critical Edition of Robinson Crusoe (second edition, ISBN:978-0393964523), and will be asked to read/watch two other novels, some audio-visual materials, as well as critical essaysthroughout the semester. This course aims at interrogating the idea of modernity as salvation. It is designed to give an overview of approaches tomodernity and salvation. In a second step, we will apply these theories to literary examples. Throughout the semester, youwill create and refine research theses, which you will work into term papers. This course aims at discussing a range of novels and texts by or about British women writers between 1750 and 1850 underthe viewpoint of feminist literary criticism. The focus will be on women's agency, the influence of feminist theory on women'swriting over the years, as well as historical contexts and circumstances influencing women writer's of the above-mentionedtime period.

This course will be reading-intensive and regular attendance as well as active participation in class will be expected.

We will read the following four novels in this course:

• Jane Austen's Emma• Maria Edgeworth's Helen• Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre• Elizabeth Gaskell's Mary Barton

Please begin reading Emma already as this will be the first novel discussed. Helen is available as an e-publication, the otherthree books are available at most second-hand bookshops.

Further texts and reading material will be provided on Moodle. Please enrol in the course before attending the first session.

You will be expected to write an essay of approx. 4,000 words. Throughout the seminar you will learn to formulate a thesis,develop a structure, research the appropriate literature, and, in the end, produce said essay, which will be concerned withan aspect of the topic in general or a specific sub-topic we discuss. Said thesis, structure, and literature choice will have tobe handed in over the course of the semester so that you can develop your essay as we move through the topic. This iscompulsory in order to pass this course.

In addition to this, you are expected to prepare for each session to enable you to take part in in-class discussions andexercises. You will also be encouraged to provide feedback to others while you yourself will also be given feedback bymembers of the class.

6 ECTS

If you are taking this course as a 'b-Seminar' you will be required to write an additional module paper of approx. 6,000 words.This may or may not be connected to the topic of this course. If you plan on writing this module paper, please approach mebefore or after class or send me an email with an idea of the topic you would like to discuss.

With the beginning of European modernity in the Renaissance, the literary genre of the utopia – the construction of imaginarysocieties and polities as alternatives to the actually existent ones – becomes increasingly important. What are the historicalfactors that make this kind of writing so popular in the period from ca. 1500 to 1700? How is the interest in utopian writingrelated to the intensifying relations between Europe and overseas societies, many of which were remarkably different from thefamiliar? Is utopia, then, an inherently colonialist genre? Or is the utopian literary imagination tied in with a more general urgeto ”imagine the present otherwise”, which the French theorist Michel Foucault has identified as typical of modern sensibilitiesat large? And how, if at all, do the early utopias from Thomas More to Margaret Cavendish ‘speak to us’ today in a periodwhere the slogan that ‘another world is possible’ appears to have, again, lost its force?

In our seminar, we will discuss these and other questions based on in-depth analyses of four influential early modern utopias:Thomas More’s Utopia (1516), Francis Bacon’s The New Atlantis (1627), Henry Neville’s The Isle of Pines (1668) andMargaret Cavendish’s The Blazing World (1668).

This course is concerned with the history and memory of the Kindertransport, the scheme which brought Jewish child refugees

to Britain from Nazi Europe before the outbreak of the Second World War, the 80 th anniversary of which is being celebratedin 2018/2019. On the basis of narratives and memoirs, we will consider how the scheme is remembered in the British publicmemory and is instrumentalised in discussions around migration, citizenship and belonging, and the so-called refugee crisis.

Contemporary literature and culture show an immense fascination with the Victorian age. The period is frequently representedas modernity’s other, characterised by prudery and the repression of sexuality. Yet, as Michel Foucault has famously stressed,we remain profoundly influenced by the discourses, conventions and ideas of the nineteenth century. Our course will studyNeo-Victorian texts from the past two decades that often playfully engage with the period, challenging and revising Victorianthemes and throwing a light on those forgotten in standard accounts of the nineteenth century. Discussing Sarah WatersTipping the Velvet (1998), Matthew Kneales’ English Passengers (2002) and the BBC series Sherlock (2010-17), we willgain insights into the complex interactions between our (post)modern present and the Victorian past. Our focus will lie oncontemporary revisions and (re)constructions of Victorian notions of gender/sexuality, race, and class.

Britain’s tight Brexit vote of 2016 is generally taken to express deep divisions across the nation: 52% vs. 38%, England vs.Scotland vs. Wales vs. Northern Ireland, liberal vs. conservative, old vs. young, affluent vs. poor, etc.Our class sets out to investigate contradictory reactions to the referendum across politics and the media, as Britain continuesits negotiations with the European Union in 2019. We will also consider a variety of creative negotiations of the referendumby probing into the imaginative power of literature, film, comedy and other media. How do these cultural texts imagine a post-Brexit Britain?

British women writers of the 1930s are often neglected in English literary history. The decade, situated between two worldwars, was characterised by political and ideological conflict and economic instability. Aesthetically, the continuous influence ofmodernism as well as traditional forms like the domestic novel shaped the literary landscape of the 1930s. In this seminar, wewill read novels which all deal with these conflicts and contradictions in their own way.

In this seminar we will look at literary and cultural abortion narratives. Abortion has become a hotly contested subject inrecent years and we will trace historical changes in the discourse on it. We will also read and analyse abortion fiction, criticallyevaluate studies on this topic, and deconstruct arguments that have remained closely tied to this debate until today. Theseminar mostly considers abortion in an Anglo-American context.

Please note that this seminar focuses on women's rights and therefore follows a pro-choice/ pro-abortion line of argument.

April 2019 sees the 300-year anniversary of the publication of Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe (full title, almost a novel itself:The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, Of York, Mariner: Who lived Eight and Twenty Years, allalone in an un-inhabited Island on the Coast of America, near the Mouth of the Great River of Oroonoque; Having been caston Shore by Shipwreck, wherein all the Men perished but himself. With An Account how he was at last as strangely deliver'dby Pyrates ). This seminar takes this opportunity to (re-)read the novel, to contemplate its canonical status (and to think aboutwhat makes a canon), to consider the context of its publication (and the contexts of our own readings), as well as to addressand discuss various critiques of the text (including fictional, audio-visual and other artistic engagements). We will engage indiscussions shaped by theories from Gender Studies, Postcolonial Studies and the Environmental Humanities.

Students are required to have access to the Norton Critical Edition of Robinson Crusoe (second edition, ISBN:978-0393964523), and will be asked to read/watch two other novels, some audio-visual materials, as well as critical essaysthroughout the semester. It is recommended that students begin reading Robinson Crusoe prior to the beginning of semester.

This course is concerned with the history and memory of the Kindertransport, the scheme which brought Jewish child refugees

to Britain from Nazi Europe before the outbreak of the Second World War, the 80 th anniversary of which is being celebratedin 2018/2019. On the basis of narratives and memoirs, we will consider how the scheme is remembered in the British publicmemory and is instrumentalised in discussions around migration, citizenship and belonging, and the so-called refugee crisis.

This seminar will introduce students to the work and life of Herman Melville, one of the most canonical authors of 19th centuryAmerican Literature. As the year 2019 marks the 200th anniversary of his birth, this seminar will approach the author from arenewed perspective of both traditional and contemporary methods of scholarly work.

We will study the historical, philosophical and aesthetic context(s) of Melville’s origins on land and at sea by combiningclassical and analog approaches to literature (close readings) with the novel methods and tools from the Digital Humanities(DH). Previous experience in dealing with Digital Humanities methods is not required. However, a basic affinity for digital andcomputational tools is expected.

In this seminar we will look at literary and cultural abortion narratives. Abortion has become a hotly contested subject inrecent years and we will trace historical changes in the discourse on it. We will also read and analyse abortion fiction, criticallyevaluate studies on this topic, and deconstruct arguments that have remained closely tied to this debate until today. Theseminar mostly considers abortion in an Anglo-American context.

Please note that this seminar focuses on women's rights and therefore follows a pro-choice/ pro-abortion line of argument.

April 2019 sees the 300-year anniversary of the publication of Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe (full title, almost a novel itself:The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, Of York, Mariner: Who lived Eight and Twenty Years, allalone in an un-inhabited Island on the Coast of America, near the Mouth of the Great River of Oroonoque; Having been caston Shore by Shipwreck, wherein all the Men perished but himself. With An Account how he was at last as strangely deliver'dby Pyrates ). This seminar takes this opportunity to (re-)read the novel, to contemplate its canonical status (and to think aboutwhat makes a canon), to consider the context of its publication (and the contexts of our own readings), as well as to addressand discuss various critiques of the text (including fictional, audio-visual and other artistic engagements). We will engage indiscussions shaped by theories from Gender Studies, Postcolonial Studies and the Environmental Humanities.

Students are required to have access to the Norton Critical Edition of Robinson Crusoe (second edition, ISBN:978-0393964523), and will be asked to read/watch two other novels, some audio-visual materials, as well as critical essaysthroughout the semester. It is recommended that students begin reading Robinson Crusoe prior to the beginning of semester.

Dieser Kurs richtet sich an Studierende der Anglistik und Romanistik, die keine oder geringe Vorkenntnisse der lateinischenSprache besitzen.

Im Kurs werden grundlegende Kenntnisse der lateinischen Formenlehre, Syntax und Lexik auf Lehrbuchgrundlage vermittelt.

Am Ende des Kurses wird eine Abschlussklausur (ohne Hilfsmittel wie Lexikon oder Grammatik) geschrieben. Einesichere Beherrschung des Lernwortschatzes des Lehrbuchs ist neben sicherer Kenntnis der Formenlehre und der SyntaxVoraussetzung für ein erfolgreiches Absolvieren des Kurses und das Bestehen der Klausur.

Neben einer regelmäßigen und aktiven Teilnahme am Unterricht wird von den Studierenden erwartet, dass sie sich genügendZeit für die Nacharbeit des Stoffes zu Hause nehmen.

Kommentar

Der Kurs ist für Studierende gedacht, die keine oder geringe Vorkenntnisse der lateinischen Sprache besitzen. Im Kurswerden grundlegende Kenntnisse der lateinischen Formenlehre, Syntax und Lexik auf Lehrbuchgrundlage vermittelt.

Der Kurs ist Bestandteil einer Kursfolge , welche fortgesetzt werden kann mit Latein II (Fortgeschrittene), Latein III(Übergangslektüre: Caesar) und Latein IV (Lektüre: Cicero; dieser Kurs bereitet unmittelbar auf die Latinumsprüfung vor).

Am Ende des Kurses wird eine Abschlussklausur (ohne Hilfsmittel wie Lexikon oder Grammatik) geschrieben. Einesichere Beherrschung des Lernwortschatzes des Lehrbuchs ist neben sicherer Kenntnis der Formenlehre und der SyntaxVoraussetzung für ein erfolgreiches Absolvieren des Kurses und das Bestehen der Klausur.

Neben einer regelmäßigen und aktiven Teilnahme am Unterricht wird von den Studierenden erwartet, dass sie sich genügendZeit für die Nacharbeit des Stoffes zu Hause nehmen.

Die folgenden Begriffserklärungen zu Prüfungsleistung, Prüfungsnebenleistung und Studienleistung gelten im Bezug aufLehrveranstaltungen für alle Ordnungen, die seit dem WiSe 2013/14 in Kranft getreten sind.

Prüfungsleistung Prüfungsleistungen sind benotete Leistungen innerhalb eines Moduls. Aus der Benotungder Prüfungsleistung(en) bildet sich die Modulnote, die in die Gesamtnote des Studiengangseingeht. Handelt es sich um eine unbenotete Prüfungsleistung, so muss dieses ausdrücklich(„unbenotet“) in der Modulbeschreibung der fachspezifischen Ordnung geregelt sein. WeitereInformationen, auch zu den Anmeldemöglichkeiten von Prüfungsleistungen, finden Sie unteranderem in der Kommentierung der BaMa-O

Prüfungsnebenleistung Prüfungsnebenleistungen sind für den Abschluss eines Moduls relevante Leistungen, die– soweit sie vorgesehen sind – in der Modulbeschreibung der fachspezifischen Ordnungbeschrieben sind. Prüfungsnebenleistungen sind immer unbenotet und werden lediglichmit "bestanden" bzw. "nicht bestanden" bewertet. Die Modulbeschreibung regelt, obdie Prüfungsnebenleistung eine Teilnahmevoraussetzung für eine Modulprüfung odereine Abschlussvoraussetzung für ein ganzes Modul ist. Als Teilnahmevoraussetzungfür eine Modulprüfung muss die Prüfungsnebenleistung erfolgreich vor der Anmeldungbzw. Teilnahme an der Modulprüfung erbracht worden sein. Auch für Erbringung einerPrüfungsnebenleistungen wird eine Anmeldung vorausgesetzt. Diese fällt immer mitder Belegung der Lehrveranstaltung zusammen, da Prüfungsnebenleistung im Rahmeneiner Lehrveranstaltungen absolviert werden. Sieht also Ihre fachspezifische OrdnungPrüfungsnebenleistungen bei Lehrveranstaltungen vor, sind diese Lehrveranstaltungenzwingend zu belegen, um die Prüfungsnebenleistung absolvieren zu können.

Studienleistung Als Studienleistung werden Leistungen bezeichnet, die weder Prüfungsleistungen nochPrüfungsnebenleistungen sind.
