HP Perspective:
Growth will be in the 3- 5% range from 2002-2006, market size: $650M for 2003
Customers capacity needs are growing, selling more TB with super not drives, not necessarily more units
Growth drivers: Growth in LTO market, increased focus on disaster recovery post 9/11, adoption of SAN, consolidation

• controlled or manageable data growth• replicated environment• remote management of hardware
required• LVD SCSI only• single O/S – ISV combination
• uncertain data growth – business in transition• medium business or campus data center• remote management of hardware required• LVD SCSI, direct attach Fibre or small SAN• may have multiple O/S – ISV combinations
• exponential data growth – >50% per year• enterprise data center: 24x7, mission critical• 80-90% FC (mostly heterogeneous SAN)• has multiple O/S – ISV combinations• life expectancy of library is 3-5 years

Tape vs. Optical vs. Disk for Data Archiving
• Tape offeres 20 years media life -> optical media offeres up to 100 years giving you a 5 times increased media security
• Tape has 35-90 sec average access -> optical 35 ms • Tapes are not revision proof -> optical media (worm) cannot be changed• Tapes could be OK if capacity exceeds 10 TB (too many JukeBoxes needed)
• Disks are wear-out parts -> optical media does not wear, can use another drive• Array formats are not compatible -> optical based UDF (universal data format)• Disks are too expensive for multi-terabyte archives• No overwrite protection, disk parameters can be changed easily• Disk are best if multiple systems need to share common data
And:• All these solutions need 3rd Party SoftWare to work
