In diesem Fall: große Oper.

[ . . . ] Ist das viele Bunte gut so? Aber ja.

Reviews of The Magic Flute

stuttgarter nachrichtenOne has to admire the way the director of the opera, artistic director David Pountney, together with the stage designer Johan Engels and the costume and puppet designer Marie-Jeanne Lecca succeed in combining spectacle with depth, seriousness with entertainment – and in guiding a Mozart opera often thought to be irremediably disjunct to a coherent, well-rounded end that even does justice to Mozart's Masonic ideas.

zDf heute Journal, mainzWhen it comes to presenting overwhelming music theatre open-air in glorious surroundings [ . . . ] no place in the world beats the lake stage of the Bregenz Festival [ . . . ] .It seems like a painted backdrop – unreal, too beautiful to be true. The Bregenz Festival is a scenic mas-terpiece. Great cinema. In this case, great opera. Mozart's Magic Flute as a fantasy spectacle – with Lake Constance as the backdrop.

Der standard, wienPremiere of Mozart's The Magic Flute in David Pountney's version on the lake stage at Bregenz: a spec-tacle as poetic as it is fanciful is carried by marvellous voices. In the club of eminent stage directors, David Pountney certainly is something of a queer fish, and a pretty cool one too. Staging Mozart's Magic Flute in a way that has mass audience appeal, and getting your stage designer to erect three 27 metre high fantasy figures in Lake Constance that look like they've escaped from children's telly: fantastic. [ . . . ] And what about all that colour? It's just great.

Opera in two acts by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, libretto by Emanuel SchikanederIn German with surtitles

What begins like a fairy-tale turns into a playful fanta-sy midway between magic farce and Masonic mysticism. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's The Magic Flute, premiered in 1791, will be returning to the Bregenz Festival lake stage in summer 2014. It is directed by the festival's artistic director David Pountney with a stage design by Johan Engels, and costumes and puppets designed by Marie-Jeanne Lecca.Accompanied by the bird catcher Papageno, three enigmatic ladies and three prescient boys, Prince Tamino sets off on his mission to free Pamina, daughter of the Queen of the Night, from Sarastro's clutches.

The Magic Flute conveys an enlightened, humanistic ideal of man: at the end it is a normal man and a normal wo-man who bear responsibility for the future of society, while the machinery of power serving queens and priests reveals itself to be nothing but superfluous bombast. At one point, Sarastro's priest asks if Tamino will manage to complete all the ordeals since he's a prince. Sarastro answers, "More than that – he's a human being!"And by the end of the opera we do indeed see Tamino and Pamina no longer as prince and princess, but simply as a man and a woman. For me, that's the essence of this work. The Magic Flute is steeped in the ideas of the Enlightenment, a movement that placed its faith in human reason and thus called into question the authority of time-honoured powers like the aristocracy and religion.

World premiereOpera in 3 acts by HK GruberBased on the play by Ödön von HorváthLibretto by Michael Sturminger in German and Viennese with German surtitles

The fifth and, I imagine, last in our epic series of world pre-mieres since 2010 will be HK Gruber's setting of Horvath's most famous play Tales from the Vienna Woods. This razor – sharp disection of the inhabitants of one of Vienna's meaner streets, and its pitiless expose of their vanity, corruption and ulimate cruelty is, surprisingly enough, sweet as well as bit-ter. Horváth himself said that he could imagine his work be-ing set by Kurt Weill, whose melodies such as the Alabama Song and Surabaya Johnny almost define the term "bitter-sweet".

It is a characteristic of this play that its humanity and its hu-mour give you just enough room to laugh and to enjoy your-self before putting the knife in with subtle and charming ac-curacy. HK Gruber will bring all of his exuberant theatricality and familiarity with the Viennese musical idiom to bear on this story which so palpably evokes the atmosphere of danger and mistrust that just preceded the Austrian embrace of fas-cism. A gallery of brilliant Austrian singers will bring those mean streets to life with the vibrant and scurrilous charac-ters that are their stock in trade.

Orchestra Concerts 2014 | E

subject to change: July 2013

Our concert programme opens with a commemoration of the outbreak of the First World War, start of the great upheavals of the 20th century. Triggered by an event of little significance in itself, the assassination of a Habsburg prince, the war broke out a month later on 28 July 1914. On this day exactly a hundred years later we will be performing Benjamin Britten's epic masterpiece, the War Requiem, conducted by Philippe Jordan. More music by HK Gruber, composer of our opera at the Festspielhaus, can be heard in the second concert to be given by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. For its third concert, Ulf Schirmer returns to the conductor's podium in Bregenz. My departure from Bregenz will be celebrated – if that's the word – at a concert by the Vorarlberg Symphony Orchestra on the last day of the festival, 24 August. David Pountney
