2 Course RegistrationStudents must register to the courses they take at the beginning of each semester. This is called

“Course Registration”. Students are advised to look through the course guidebook and consult with their instructors before registration.

The following notice is given to undergraduate students. Graduate students are asked to follow the advice from their instructors.

【Notice for Undergraduate Students】

(1) First, register the compulsory classes.(2) Next, register the selective classes.(3) Finally, check your registration and make sure if they meet the criteria of your

Faculty / School. Then, proceed to the registration from the computer YNU Campus.

◆Notes to international students taking Japanese Language and Japanese AffairsInternational students can register Japanese Language courses for foreign language credit, but

the number of credits differs by faculty. You can’ t register for the same course more than once. For example, if you received credit for Advanced Japanese Language (A-level) as a first-year student, and as a fourth-year student you realize that you still need Japanese language courses, you can´ t re-register for Advanced Japanese Language (A-level). You can´ t register for a course with the same name, even if the teacher and course content are different.

3 Japanese Language CoursesThe following Japanese classes are offered by the International Student Center. Please consult

with teachers who are in charge of Japanese courses at the International Student Center. For details, please refer to the website of the International Student Center ( http: / / www.isc.ynu.ac.jp/ ).3-1 Japanese and Approaches to Japanese Society and Culture as General Education Subj ects.

These are Liberal Arts courses offered for undergraduate international students. In general, there are “Japanese Intermediate” / “Japanese Advanced” courses, mainly for first-year students, “Japanese Exercise” for second semester of first-year through fourth-year students, and “Japanese Affairs” for first- through fourth-year students.3-2 Junior Year Overseas at Yokohama National University

Japanese language courses for exchange students in the Junior Year Overseas at Yokohama National University (JOY) Program. These courses are divided into 6 levels ranging from beginner to advanced, and provide specific classes teaching various language skills like conversation, writing, kanji that can be selected according to ability level. These classes are approved for credit.3-3 Inter-college Supplementary Japanese Language Program

These courses are for all the international students enrolled at YNU. Classes are divided into six levels from beginner to advanced, and are structured around different functions and language skills, such as conversation, writing, kanji, etc. Students can select courses that match their own level and academic goals. Registration is accepted via the Internet. These courses can’ t be approved for credit, but an official certificate will be issued upon completion.

4-2 Tuition Waiver (Only for regular students who enter YNU in or after April 20 20 )

※ This tuition waiver program is operated based on the budget allocated from the Japanese government. There is a possibility that this program itself may be changed if the budget amount is changed drastically in the future. In this case, the university will announce it to the students promptly.

To promote the acceptance of academically excellent international students and provide financial support after their admission to YNU, a new tuition waiver program has been established for privately financed international students who enter YNU in or after April 2020. Only privately financed international students (regular students) who can acq uire the " Student" visa when admitted to YNU are eligible for the program. Screening is solely based on academic performance. Applicants who ranked top 50% among privately financed international students will be entitled to a 100% , 50% , or 30% exemption from tuition fees according to their academic results. (Even those who are eligible may not be entitled to an exemption due to limited funds.)

Screening for the first year will be held based on results of entrance examinations. Those who wish to apply their first year must submit the application form to the relevant undergraduate college or graduate school when applying for admission.

Screening for the second and subseq uent years will be held based on academic performance at YNU. Those who wish to apply for their second and subseq uent years must submit the designated documents at the second floor of Student Center by the due date. Details will be announced on the Student Support Division website early February, 2021.4-3 Tuition Waiver and Deferment (Only for Regular Students who have entered YNU

before April 20 20 )Regular students who have difficulties with their studies for financial reason are eligible to apply

Detailed information will be posted on bulletin boards and Student Support Division website. Those who are interested in tuition waiver and deferment should make sure not to miss these notices. (Period of posting: early February for Spring Semester and late July for Fall Semester.)

Students can apply for tuition waiver and deferment for Spring and Fall Semesters at the same time when applying for Spring Semester.

However, simultaneous application is not allowed when applying for Fall Semester.Recently, the number of applicants has increased. Please be aware that even if you apply for

tuition waiver there is a possibility that you will not be accepted.

5 Scholarships5-1 Important Notice for Japanese Government (MEX T) Scholarship Students

Those who are receiving Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship have to take a signing procedure to confirm their attendance once a month. Please visit Student Center with your Student ID Card for this procedure. The scholarship will not be paid without this procedure for any reason. Moreover, a signature by proxy will not be acceptable for any reason.5-2 Privately Financed International Students

There are two types of scholarships: ’University-recommended Scholarships’ and ’ Scolarships which you can apply directly’. Generally, around 20% of privately financed international students are awarded a scholarship, please be aware that screening for these scholarships would be competitive.

Those who want to receive ’University-recommended Scholarships’ have to submit an application form, the deadline of which is set at the beginning of Spring Semester and Fall Semester, respectively. Students can submit an application form for Spring and Fall Semesters at the same time when submitting for Spring Semester. However, simultaneous submission is not allowed when submitting for Fall Semester. Submitting this application form does not guarantee a scholarship to you, however, it is a prereq uisite to receive a scholarship.

Scholarship information will be posted on bulletin boards and the website of Student Support Division. Regarding the screening for ’University-recommended Scholarships’, YNU uses a list which is ranked by graduate schools or colleges based on the data from the application form that you submit.

　Japanese Government (MEX T) ScholarshipPrivately financed international students who are attending a graduate program of YNU or

planning to be enrolled in a graduate school of YNU are eligible for the screening of Japanese Government (MEXT) scholarship. YNU will recommend candidates, and scholarship recipients will be selected by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).※Applications have not been accepted since the 2016 academic year.

5-3 Temporary Loan ServiceTemporary loans (up to a maximum of 100,000 yen) are available to temporarily cover necessary

expenses for international students enrolled in YNU. For more details, please consult the person in charge of this service at the Student Support Division. (Note: Full-time students only.)

6 Counseling and Support System6-1 Academic Advisor

When you encounter difficulties in your student life or research, please make an appointment to consult with your academic advisor or an international student advisor of each faculty. Since the system may vary according to the faculty, graduate school, or your year in school, please ask your faculty or graduate school for details. 6-2 Tutoring System

This system offers help to international students through tutors, who are Japanese students (or senior international students) recommended by advisors. International Students enrolled at YNU can have tutors for the first two years after arrival in Japan in the case of undergraduates, or one year in the case of graduate students or research students.

Tutors help with studying Japanese and your major field, Japanese language advice, daily life (guidance on and off campus, accompaniment to local government offices to take care of paperwork, assistance with looking for housing, etc.), and other advice. International students who would like a tutor should consult with their advisor. (Rewards are given to tutors from the university within the designated limits.)6-3 Counseling at the International Student Center

When you encounter problems in your studies, classes, private life, or any other matter, you can also ask for advice to the advisor at the International Student Center. Your privacy is absolutely guaranteed. Appointments are not req uired. You can visit during the following times.

7 Career Guidance7-1 Career Support Room

It is wise to thoroughly understand the characteristics and scheduling of job-hunting activities in Japan. When Japanese corporations recruit college graduates, for example, the hiring period and procedures are generally the same, and Japanese students conduct their job-hunting activities accordingly. The hiring period and procedures are not especially different for international students, so those who wish to work at a Japanese corporation should pursue job-hunting activities according to the same schedule as their Japanese counterparts.

Employment examinations at corporations for Japanese and international students are also conducted at the same time and without variation.

There are three key characteristics of Japanese job-hunting activities to remember:　(1) The recruiting period starts early and lasts a long time.　　 Recruiting starts during the third year of undergraduate programs and the first year of

graduate school. 　(2) The application period for corporations has a fixed schedule.　(3) You must pass all stages of a company’ s screening process to be hired.It is important to start job-hunting activities early, to collect information, and to keep the schedule

clearly in mind.The Career Support Room offers career guidance for all students. There is also specific job-

hunting guidance for international students as well as seminars featuring human resource representatives from various corporations who come to the campus and introduce their companies. Please take the initiative and participate in these programs. In addition, you can browse announcements concerning internships with the goal of gaining firsthand work experience.

Please feel free to take advantage of the Career Support Room to get advice and collect information on finding a job with a Japanese corporation.

7-2 International Student Career Support DeskThe International Student Career Support Desk, ISCSD, is located on the 3rd floor of the

Student Center. The ISCSD organizes seminars on the Japanese employment process in Japanese and foreign languages as well as extension courses: Japanese language and career education that will help international students to find employment in Japan. The ISCSD offers career-related information for international students via our website and email newsletters, “Isynu-net.” E-mail: kokusai-shushoku@ ynu.ac.jp

8 Rules to be observed for Internet accessYou are req uired to follow “Matters to be observed for Internet access” (1~ 4 as follows).

1. User account (User ID account & password) managementAs for each of your user account, please do not share it with anyone. In addition, please set a

password which isn’ t possible for others to guess.2 . Prevention of Malware infection (* Malware is a general term about a malicious software such as computer virus etc.)You are req uired to install antivirus software every single PC including your desktop PC at home,

your mobile note PC etc. You can install “V irus Buster” free of charge. 3. Improvement of vulnerability for OS/application software (Security update)

Security update for the OS on your PC or application software is req uired regularly.

4. Prohibition of illegal download of online contents (movies/game etc. ) & redeliveryIt is an act of copyright infringement to download or to redeliver movies/ game contents

downloaded from illegal website by P2P software. It is strictly prohibited.

9 Post Graduation Follow-up ActivitiesYNU Global Alumni Network maintains the data of student contact information to facilitate

communication among former international students and current students as well as to offer the connection to the university. Former international students who provide their contact details can receive information about YNU Alumni meeting that is held overseas, YNU Homecoming Day and overseas international student networks. Also, an e-mail magazine is distributed periodically to offer the latest YNU information.
