n Grief. The horrendous attacks of 7 January 2015 have changed our view of the world. We are grieving with Paris and know instinctively that our western values are the right ones and are in the majority. World-wide. This was shown impressively by the 1.5 million people who paid tribute by rallying for their right to free expression in Paris on 11 January 2015.

When many people get together in the interests of a cause, they gener-ate an unstoppable force. Its effect is much more powerful than the heinous attacks of criminal individuals.

As a trailblazer of the encounter culture and hub for free expression, the meetings industry is shocked by the terrorist attacks but equally alarmed about newly emerging fears and enemy stereotypes. “Security first” is a prerequisite for any congress, and meeting destinations in Muslim coun-tries need to face up to the question how to deal with possible prejudices. CIM also wanted to know how the convention bureaux feel about this.

Die Kongressindustrie als Wegbereiter der Begegnungskultur und Plattform für freien Meinungsaustausch erschüttern die Terror-attacken ebenso wie nun neue Ängste und Feindbilder.

„Security first“ ist die Voraussetzung aller Kongresse, und islamisch geprägte Tagungs-länder müssen sich jetzt fragen lassen, wie sie mit möglichen Befangenheiten umgehen. Auch CIM wollte wissen, wie die Stimmung bei Convention Bureaus ist. Der sehr spär-liche Rücklauf ist nicht zuletzt auch ein Aus-druck vehementer Distanzierung von der Un-geheuerlichkeit dieses Angriffs auf unsere Freiheit und Meinungsfreiheit.

Dass sein radikaler islamistischer Hinter-grund durch den Islam streng verurteilt wird, bezeugt die Stellungnahme des 2014 ge-gründeten Saudi Exhibition and Convention Bureaus, für das Jerad Bachar eine Presse-mitteilung der Saudi Regierung zitiert: „Das Königreich verurteilt aufs Schärfste diesen feigen Terrorakt, der durch die wahre Religi-

on des Islam und alle anderen Religionen und Glaubensrichtungen abgelehnt wird.“

Keine offizielle Erklärung zu den Vorfäl-len war von Atout France zu bekommen. Die republikanische Geschlossenheit von Frank-reichs Bevölkerung am 11. Januar 2015 und couragierte Fortsetzung der Arbeit in der ver-bleibenden Charlie Hebdo-Redaktion sind je-doch überall angekommen und bezeugen das Bekenntnis zu Toleranz und Meinungs-freiheit in Frankreich.

„Gefühlte welten“ titelte ciM 2006, als eine Welle offener Gewalt in Reaktion auf die zuvor von der dänischen Zeitung Jyl-lands-Posten veröffentlichten zwölf Moham-med-Karikaturen eskalierte. Für Respekt und interkulturellen Austausch auf Augen-höhe machte sich schon damals der Gene-ralsekretär des Zentralrats der Muslime in Deutschland e.V. (ZMD) Aiman Mazyek stark.

Jetzt folgten seinem Aufruf zur Mahnwa-che für die Toten von Paris mit dem Motto

„Zusammenstehen – Gesicht zeigen“ am 13. Januar 2015 10.000 Berliner Bürger, darunter auch Bundespräsident Joachim Gauck und Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel.

Dass laut aktuellem Religionsmonitor der Bertelsmann-Stiftung 51 Prozent der Deutschen den Islam für bedrohlich halten und 57 Prozent meinen, er gehöre nicht in die westliche Welt, macht Mazyek „große Sorge“.

„Die Terroristen wollten uns spalten. Er-reicht haben sie das Gegenteil. Sie haben uns zusammengeführt. Demokratie, Achtung des Rechts, Respekt voreinander, Wahrung der Menschenwürde. Das ist unsere Lebens-form“, so der Appell von Bundespräsident Joachim Gauck. Er zitiert Werte, die uns alle mit Zuversicht weiterleben lassen werden. Und die uns auch die Zuversicht geben, dass wir unbehelligt viele Kongresse mit multikul-tureller Beteiligung erleben werden. Das istanbul convention & Visitors bureau bekundet Frankreich sein beileid

Wir sind der Überzeugung, dass der Ter-rorismus keine Nationalität und keine Re-ligion hat, und dass es für die Ausübung jeglicher Form von Gewalt keinerlei Rechtfertigung geben kann. Der Terroran-schlag von Paris ist vor allem ein Angriff auf die Menschlichkeit und ihre univer-sellen Werte.

Im Lauf der Geschichte ist Istanbul immer sowohl ein Ort der Begegnung als auch

Heimat unzähliger Kulturen und Religi-onen gewesen, die jahrhundertelang in Frieden und Harmonie zusammenlebten. Als stolze weltoffene Metropole, reich an Kultur und Geschichte, sind wir fest davon überzeugt, dass wir in Istanbul auch wei-terhin eine wachsende Anzahl von Besu-chern aus aller Welt hier in Zukunft will-kommen heißen und damit das solide Be-sucherwachstum der vergangenen Jahre fortsetzen werden.

Ich bin ebenso zuversichtlich, dass terro-ristische und extremistische Gewalt das Wachsen und Gedeihen des Tourismus nicht verhindern kann.

Das Istanbul Convention & Visitors Bu-reau (ICVB) spricht aus Anlass der tra-gischen Ereignisse der letzten Woche der Bevölkerung Frankreichs sein tiefstes Bei-leid und Mitgefühl aus.

The very sparse feedback is only a natural expression of their strong wish to distance themselves from the atrocity of this attack on our freedom and on free expression.

The Muslim world’s condemnation of the radical extremist back-ground to the attacks is demonstrated in a statement by the Saudi Exhibition and Convention Bureau, established in 2014, on behalf of which Jerad Bachar quotes a press release from the Saudi govern-ment: “The Kingdom strongly condemns and denounces this cow-ardly terrorist act that is rejected by true Islamic religion as well as the rest of the religions and beliefs.”

Atout France made no official statement on the incidents. But the rally for unity of the French people on 11 January 2015 and coura-geous “business as usual” of the remaining Charlie Hebdo editors have been acknowledged all over the world as a testimony to how France embraces tolerance and free expression.

“Gefühlte Welten” (Worlds of Sensation) was the title of a CIM issue in 2006 after a wave of open violence had escalated in re-sponse to the twelve Muhammad cartoons published in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten. At the time, the Secretary General of

the Central Council of Muslims in Germany (ZMD) Aiman Mazyek had already demanded respect and an intercultural exchange at eye level. 10,000 citizens of Berlin, including president Joachim Gauck and chancellor Angela Merkel, followed his appeal for a vig-il for the victims of Paris under the motto “Stand together – show your face” on 13 January 2015.

Mazyek is “greatly concerned” by the fact that, according to the recent Religion Monitor of the Bertelsmann Foundation, 51 per cent of Germans perceive Islam as a threat, and 57 per cent consid-er it incompatible with life in the western world.

“The terrorists want to divide us. They have achieved the oppo-site. They have brought us together. Democracy, respect for the law, respect for one another, and respect for human dignity. This is our way of life,” appealed German president Joachim Gauck. He quotes values that allow us all to live on with optimism. And to be certain that we will experience many conventions with a multicul-tural attendance unharmed. Be it in Paris, in congress destinations in Muslim countries, or anywhere in the world. istanbul convention & Visitors bureau Shares its condolences with France

We believe that terrorism has no nationality or religion and that there is no justification whatsoever for violence of any nature. The attack in Paris is above all an aggression against humanity and its universal values.

Throughout history Istanbul has always been both a meeting point, and home, to countless different cultures and religions, who have lived in peace and harmony for centuries. Indeed, as a proudly cosmopolitan city rich in culture and history; we firmly believe that we in Istanbul will continue to welcome a growing number of visitors from around the world in the futu-

re, continuing the trend of solid growth in visitor numbers from previous years.

I am also quite confident that such terrorist and extremist acts cannot prevent tourism and meeting industries to grow and develop.

The Istanbul Convention & Visitors Bureau (ICVB) would like to share its sincerest condolences and sympathy with the people of France in the aftermath of the tragic events of the last week.
