Eine kleine Raupe hat bereits vor ca. 5.000 Jahren COCOON®-Geschichte geschrieben: die Seidenraupe, die Larve des Seidenspinners, baut sich zur Ver-puppung einen Kokon aus einem einzi-gen bis zu 900 Meter langen Faden. Sie leistet dabei Schwerstarbeit, muss sie doch bis zu 300.000 Schlaufen um sich herum legen. Zur Produktion unserer COCOON® Leuchten haben wir uns dieses Verfah-ren zum Vorbild genommen. Als CO-COON® wird eine von EGLO lizenzierte und einzigartige Spezial-Rezeptur be-zeichnet, mit der ein extrem belastba-res und elastisches Material hergestellt wird. Modelle jeglicher Art können mit einer Membran bespannt werden. Die Formenvielfalt ist somit schier unend-lich und der Kreativität der Designer sind keine Grenzen gesetzt.

About 5,000 years ago, a small caterpil-lar started to write COCOON® history: the silkworm, the larva of the silkworm moth, builds a cocoon for pupation from a filament that is up to 900 metres long. It is performing the heaviest work in the process as it needs to wrap itself up with up to 300,000 loops.

We have taken this method as a model for the production of our COCOON® lumi-naires. COCOON® a unique special formula licensed by EGLO from which an extremely resilient and elastic material is produced. Models of any kind can be covered with a diaphragm. The variety of shapes allows almost infinite possibilities, and only the sky is the limit in terms of designer creativity.

Un petit ver écrivait l'histoire COCOON® il y a env. 5000 ans : le ver à soie, la larve du tisseur de soie se construit un cocon à partir d'une seul fil pouvant atteindre 900 mètres pour se transformer en chrysalide. C'est un travail laborieux car elle doit enrouler le fil jusqu'à 300 000 fois autour d'elle.

Pour produire nos luminaires COCOON®, nous nous sommes basés sur cette façon de faire. COCOON® désigne un procédé spécial et unique breveté par EGLO qui permet de fabriquer un matériau extrême-ment résistant et élastique. Tous les types de modèles peuvent être recouverts d'une membrane. La diversité des formes est donc infinie et les designers peuvent laisser libre cours à leur créativité.

webbing True to the principle ‘from the caterpil-lar to the butterfly’, the transformation process of a sober wire frame to a beauti-fully designed lighting fixture starts with the webbing process. In this process, the filament is sprayed onto the rotating frame until it is fully covered with the first layer of filaments.

coating Only a few hours later the ‘cocoon’ is ready for the second step of its transformation – the coating. For this, a special coating material is applied to the woven frame and combines with the filaments to the effect that the shade receives an extremely elastic skin. Already the material is flexible enough to withstand exposure to high levels of stress, and it is always able to regain its original form.

finish Finally, as the crowning so to speak, the luminaire model receives a special varnish layer. It protects the shade against soiling and can be cleaned using a wet cloth.

cocoon® production is carried out in three steps:

wEbbiNG Suivant le principe "de la chenille qui devient papillon", le webbing marque le début du processus de transformation d'une simple structure métallique en un luminaire aux formes élégantes. Pour cela, un fil à tisser est pulvérisé sur la structure en rotation jusqu'à ce que celle-ci soit entièrement recouverte de la première couche de fils.

COaTiNG Quelques heures plus tard seulement, le "Cocoon" (au sens littéral du terme) est prêt pour la deuxième étape de sa transformation : le coating. ici, un matériau de revêtement spécial est appliqué sur la structure tissée et se lie aux fils à tisser de manière à ce que l'habillage de l'abat-jour devienne extrême-ment élastique. À cette étape de la fabrica-tion, le matériau est déjà tellement flexible qu'il résiste à de fortes contraintes et reprend toujours sa forme initiale.

fiNiSh Pour terminer - c'est-à-dire le couronne-ment - le luminaire est encore revêtu d'une couche spéciale de vernis. Elle protège l'abat-jour de la saleté et peut être net-toyée à l'aide d'un chiffon humide.

La fabrication de cocoon® s'effectue en trois étapes :

webbing Ganz nach dem Prinzip „von der Raupe zum Schmetterling“ beginnt mit dem Webbing der Verwandlungsprozess eines nüchternen Drahtgestells zum formschönen Beleuchtungskörper. Dabei wird ein Spinnfaden auf das sich drehende Gestell aufgespritzt, bis es vollkommen mit der ersten Faden-schicht überzogen ist.

coating Schon wenige Stunden später ist der „Cocoon“ bereit für den zweiten Schritt seiner Verwandlung: das Coating. Hierbei wird auf das gewebte Gestell ein spezi-elles Coating-Material aufgetragen, das sich mit den Spinnfäden verbindet und bewirkt, dass der Schirm eine extrem elastische Haut erhält. Schon jetzt ist das Material so flexibel, dass es hohen Be-lastungen stand hält und immer wieder seine Ursprungsform annimmt.

finish Zum Abschluss – als Krönung sozusagen – erhält das Leuchtenmodell noch eine spezielle Lackschicht. Sie schützt den Schirm vor Verschmutzung und kann mit einem feuchten Tuch gereinigt werden.
