Improving On-Time Delivery at Deutsche Edelstahlwerke

Strengthening Customer Service

Case Study

 

Like many steel manuacturers, Deutsche

Edelstahlwerke GmbH (DEW) has very

complex production processes. It produces

40,000 dierent varieties o steel products,

each o which involves up to 10 production

stages, including melting, rolling, orging,

sawing, adjusting and testing.

 The company’s inability to eectively plan

this production across its three plants

stood in the way o improved customer

service. “We had our stand-alone

production planning systems with very

limited connections between them,” says

Hans Dieter Nase, DEW’s director o 

production planning and order

management. “This clearly hampered

our ability to optimize throughput at our

plants and prevented us rom making

accurate orecasts on delivery times or

customers.”

DEW’s goals were clear. To succeed in the

global market, the company needed to

improve efciency and deliver goods to

customers quickly and on time.

Why JDA?

DEW had already implemented an

enterprise resource planning system, but

the production planning unctionality that

the system oered did not meet the

demand o a complex steel production. The

company thereore decided to look to other

vendors or an appropriate solution.

It considered various product oerings

beore selecting JDA’s solutions or supply

chain management. “We selected JDA

because it has the most experience in

actory planning or the steel industry and

compared to other vendors, its solution was

clearly the best,” Nase said.

JDA provides all o the solutions, content

and platorm required or companies to

improve their operational efciency and

participate in online marketplaces. DEW

initially opted or the actory planning

module and is now adding to this with

modules or master planning, delivery

orecasting (DEW’s order promising) and

materials allocation.

DEW has implemented a variety o JDA

solutions, including JDA® Order Promiser,

JDA® Factory Planner, JDA® Material

Allocator and JDA® Supply Chain Planner.

JDA’s Contribution

 The implementation o JDA solutions has

created a dynamic production planning

environment or DEW. “The JDA solution

is a very efcient tool or adapting the

planning parameters and is exible or

adding additional products and resources

to production,” Nase said. “Modeling is

very easy and eective.”

JDA solutions have also added

tremendous exibility in the planning

process – something that did not exist at

DEW prior to the implementation. “Our

previous systems were very inexible and

only allowed or planning once a week,”

Nase said. “With the JDA solution we can

plan every day, in real time, and adapt our

production to reect new situations and

new orders as they occur.”

DEW’s Results

 The improvements at DEW ollowing the

implementation o JDA solutions are

clearly evident. DEW has been successul

in improving its ability to deliver on time

rom 60 percent to 85 percent. It has

shortened its lead time by 25 percent

and reduced work-in-progress stock by

25 percent.

All o this not only improves customer

service, but also delivers tangible benets

to the bottom line. JDA solutions have

made light work o the complex

production environment at DEW. Despite

introducing an even more complicated

product mix, DEW has still managed to

increase its production with the use o the

JDA solution.

“We have had a very good experience

working with JDA,” Nase said. “We have

become more competitive and improved

our customer service by streamlining our

entire planning processes rom order

request through production to delivery.”
