Franqois Devienne (geb. L759 in Joinville, gest. 1803 in Charenton bei Paris), franzósischer Fagot-tist, Flótist und Komponist, stand bis 1784 im Dienst des Kardinals de Rohan. Anschlie8end warer als Musiker in der Schweizer Garde und im Théátre de Monsieur tátig. Devienne war nicht nurhochberühmter Virtuose, sondern auch ein ausgezeichneter Pádagoge, wie seine erfolgreiche Tátig-keit als Lehrer fiir Flóte am Pariser Conservatoire und vor allem seine vielbeachtete Métbode deFlúte bezeugt. Als Komponist schrieb Devienne flir fast alle Gattungen zahlreiche Werke. SeineOpern wurden bis Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts oft gespielt, obwohl sie nicht immer den gleichenmusikalischen Wert wie seine konzertanten Sinfonien und Kammermusikwerke haben. Für denEinfallsreichtum und melodischen Charme seiner Instrumentalkompositionen legen die Six DuosConcertans pour Flüte et Alto (Paris, ca. 1780) ein lebhaftes Zeugnis ab. Aus dieser Sammlungwurde fiir die hier vorgelegte Neuausgabe das dritte, vierte und fiinfte Duo ausgewáhlt. Sie sind,wie so oft zu Deviennes Zeit, nur zweisáu.ig. Man kann aber, entsprechend der Praxis im 18. Jahr-hundert, Kombinationen vornehmen. So láBt sich z. B. das F-Dur-Adagio aus dem zweiten Duoleicht zwischen die Sátze des ersten oder dritten Duos einschieben. wodurch in beiden Fállen sehrreizvolle dreisátzige Werke entstehen.

Abgesehen von kleinen Korrekturen offensichtlicher Fehler und der notwendigen Angleichung vonPhrasierung und Dynamik gibt diese Ausgabe getreu den Originaltext wieder.

To the present edition

Frangois Devienne (born in Joinville in 1759, died in Charenton near Paris in 1803) was, apartfrom composing, a performer on both the bassoon and flute. He was engaged in the service ofCardinal de Rohan until 1784 when he accepted a musical post with the Swiss Life Guards and atthe Théátre de Monsieur. Devienne ranked not only as a celebrated virtuoso but also as anexcellent musical educator. Testifying to his qualities is the success he enjoyed as a professor ofthe flute at the Paris Conservatoire, above all however his well-knownMétbode de Flúte. As acomposer Devienne wrote profusely in musical forms of almost every description. His operas werefrequently performed up to the beginning of the 20th century, even though they did not alwayshave the same musical significance as his works written in sinfonia concertante form or hischamber music. The Slr Duos Concertans pour Flúte et Alto (Paris, c. 1780) are fine examplesdisplaying the richness of creative imagination and melodic charm that distinguish Devienne'sinstrumental compositions. For this new edition, the numbers 3, 4 and 5 were selected from theabove set of duos. As was common in Devienne's day, they comprise only two movements. Inconformity with the practice prevalent during the 18th century, however, it is possible to extendthe length by combining a number of different movements. Thus for instance, the Adagio inF Major from the second duo can be interpolated between the first or third duo to producethree-movement compositions of distinct appeal.

With the exception of minor corrections of obviously errors as well as necessary coordination ofphrasing and dynamics, this edition is a faithful reproduction of the original text.
