and they still apply loday regardless of the fact that Winkler's demand for an overall safety was fulfilled in 1973, that ropes no longer nm on sieei, but on rubber linings, and thaI loday magnel lc lnductive inspection 01 ropes can be carried out con!inuously and in such a way as 10 preclude the occurrence of rope damage liable to endanger the salety 01 the rope. These erlt erla are only l1s led by way 01 example, and could be extended to rope manulactum, the maintenance and care 0 1 ropes, rope guidance, the design 01 s tations and !ine equipment and operation .

3. Funlcular rallways

The renaissance of Ihe funieular ra ilway only became possible in 1972 when Ihe previously stipu lated salely factoT 01 8.0 was redlJced 10 4.5. il, is slzable reduc· tion or adaptation to aerial ropeways was posslble because conditions had been established wh ich made the lunicular railway comparab le with an aerial ropeway. These were principally a clearly visible line and a track completely free of obstacles. E:legant, dlTect routing with numeTOUS bridges and tunnels was the neCessary consequence of this requ iremen l. AI the same time, the speed of Iravel was increased Irom an initial value of about 3.0 m/s to 10 rn /so With Ihl$ step the old and vlrtually forgot ten funicu:ar railway again became attractive and achieved new popularity.

4. Naw methods 01 evaluation

Although the first edition 01 the Wire Rope Regulations in 1973 linked Ihe computalion 01 ropes wilh regard to bending and compress lon wllh a Iwo-fold latigue limit , the safety factor for all aerial ropeways was leI! unchanged.

5. Salaly Factor

AHhoug h the fatigue limit now takes InlO consideration lorced bending, lateral st ress and compression, allhough Ihe diameter of sheaves and rOllers has been ia'ld down accordlngly, allhough all sheaves and rollers have been rubber lined since 1950, and although ropes today are manufactured, serviced and lendec! according to modern principles, the s tlpuIs ted values for the salety factor have rarna\ned unchanged. The dlfficuH question Is now ralsed as to what salety aetually means. In this context it may be useful to make a comparison between then and nOw, As we have al ready seen, the manu~ lac ture, maintenance and care of ropes have progressed far, and all the equ ipment com lng In lo contact wlth ropes, such as sheaves, rollers, etc. is litted with l ini(lgs thaI cannot damage the ropes , wlth tha resliit that maximum rope nfe can be expected, 11 , then, no influences are to be expec ted which could lead to the sud .. den fa i lure 01 a rope, and Ihe intervals between inspeclions are so short that dangerous damage cannot remaln und lscovered , the overall safety could In theory be just under 1, The dlfflculty which makes Ihis assumptlon untenable lies in the numerous tolerances which must be taken into consideration; a correspondingly high salety lactor must therefore ba chOsen, The toleranees in wire strength and wire diameIer are regulaled In the relevant AuSlrlan Standards; only within cer,tai n IIml ls are Irregularilles In the manufactu re of ropes controllable facto rs determining the breaking load 01 a rope, If manufacturing tolerances are taken into conslderation, one must reckon with a 10 to 16 % reduction in the breaking load (Ior a 42 wlre or 216 wlre Warrlngton-Seale rope), depending on rope construclion , On the

other hand, the service life 01 a rope is determined by the wear of the rope, external influences due, lor example, to rOller loading, internal fri c tion Inlluenced by lubrlcatlor), corroslon, and finally la· tlgue of the materlall tsei l. These influences can be expressed as percentages 01 a cross-sectional red uction and Can be established in the course 01 the Inspeclions mentioned above. The permlss lble percentages vary in different countries Irom 6.5 % (Auslria) to 20 % (ltaly, see Winkler). The reference length and the critical rope length tor whiCh the safety lactor applies are 01 slgn lf lcance in these percentages: the values of the sa fety factor found by Winkler lay between 4.03 (Switzerland), 4,21 (Austria) and 4.78 (France) with rele rence to a 10 % increase in minimlJm breaking load, In Austria a rope must be dlscarded when an aetual safety lactor of abou t 3.8 Is reached . Practical resul ts have shown that a 114 wire rope with about 80 wi re breaks per meter still has about 80 % of it5 ullimate strength. The calculated reductlon in cross-sectlon is 70 tll rl , the reduclion 01 the safety factor only 20 % . This con· siderable discrepancy points out the im· portance of the crHical rope length, If, On the one hand, one wanted to oblain a twisting factor of almost 1, I. e. the actual brea king strength would be almost equal to Ihe ca!culated breaking strength. and on the other 10 allow only a slight reduclion in cross secHon for llndeterminable flaws, it wou ld be possible under the fOllowing condilions to reduce the value 01 the design safety lactor to around 4.0, whilst at Ihe same time maintaining the previous safety factor for the discarding 01 ropes :

elongation. Prestressed (opes, up to abou t 30 °/0 of Ihe breaking load, do not exhibit the above-menlioned twisting effect. but there is an improvement in extensibility and cross-sectlonal reducllon.

2. Mechanically stralgh tened onds whell splieing ropes wilh a nominal diameter 01 more than 41 mm.

3. ReglJlar magnetic induclive inspection 01 ropes with a device thai ean also glve a clear lndlcat ion 01 Interna I corroslon and Internal wirc breaks. The existing regulations on the disearding 01 ropes stipulate that a rope must be dlscarded wHh a 10 Ofo reduction In cross section ba.sed on Ihe calculated breaking load (Ihls corresponds 10 a 15 % reduction in cross section based on Ihe actua l breaking load - beeause the actual breaking load has been increased to an average of about 4 Ofo above the calculaled breaking load by ralslng the tolerance limits Irom the provious value of

8 Ofo to -41 + 12 % - see ö NORM M 9500). The existing regulations can thsrelore be left unchanged. They produce about 4-5 Ofo more sa fely. 11 is also worth mantionlng thai in olher count ries a much higher reduction in cross section is permissible.

In vlew 01 Ihe teChnological development thai has taken place since 1950, olle could argue without hesltatlon for a reduction 01 Iha safety faclor to a value of 4,5. All the more so, as the same safely laclor is required with regular magnelic inductive inspection of the ropes used in mlnlng, whlch are subJecled to far highor loading . These ropes are discarded when they display a reduction in cross aection 01 15 % . calculated from Ihe aClual breaklng strain. Finally, it m'ust also be noted thai a similar tendency could also be dlscerned et Ihe second conlinental symposium of the OITAF-NACS in Canada in 1980.

6. Fatlguo limit

The stress limil with Ihe above-mentioned safety factor of 4.5 increases Ba a straigh t lino trom the previous VallJe of 5.0. This modlfica!ion could !huS make an Impol'tanl contribution to incroased performance by Ihe cho ice 01 stronger ropes. However, il Ihe safety factor is reduced still turther, the stress limit remains constant, dependlng on the magnitude 01 the nominal st renglh, reachlng Its maximum value of 0.35 for a two· fold fatigue limit before Ihe safety factor of 4.0. The safely factor thai can be oblained is as foliows: R" = 2160 NI mm'

= 1960 NImm' = 1770 NImm'

A reductlon In the salely faclor has been made possible, on Ihe onG hand, by progress in the field of ropa manufacture. and the dimensioning. maintenance and upkeep of ropes; for reasons of salety Ih ls Is commenSurate wilh the standard of technologlcal developmenl. On the other hand, a change in Ihe designallon of ropes has had a positive ellect on the factors on which Ihis value is based; as a resu!t, a reduction in Ihe sa fety factor of spllced hau I ro pe loops to 4.5 can be justlfled wlthout a detrimenlal reduClion in Ihe safety of the rope.
