Most agricultural, construction, and goods delivery vehicles worldwide are powered by
diesel engines. At present it would be hardly impossible to maintain our goods
supplies without diesel. State-of-the-art, diesel-driven emergency power generators
not only provide electricity in remote areas, they also spring into action within seconds
in cases of emergency for example in hospitals, helping to save lives.

A diesel engine is still the most economical generator of energy and continues to be
important for transportation worldwide. Moreover, the diesel engine still has a great
deal of potential for development, making it a key factor when it comes to reaching the
target of 95 g/km CO2 for EU passenger car fleets by the year 2020, for example.

On average, diesel passenger cars are 25% more fuel-efficient than comparable gasoline
engine cars. This equals 35% more range with every tankful. The overall costs over lifetime
(purchase, operation, insurance, maintenance over a defined time and mileage, minus resale
revenue) are reasonable. In commercial vehicles there is no substitute for the diesel engine.
Based on current fuel prices and around 135,000 km driven, fleet owners save around
10,000 euros per truck, per year. By 2020, Bosch technologies could even reduce the fuel
consumption of commercial vehicles by a further 15%.

The diesel emits up to 15% less CO2 than a comparable gasoline engine. This is
due to its up to 25% lower fuel consumption.
More diesels on the road equals less CO2 in the atmosphere. As long as
electromobility is not available for mass marketing this means: To achieve the
CO2 targets without an overall restriction of mobility the diesel is indispensable.

The combination of diesel with hybrid technology is a “dual saver” when it comes to
minimizing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
Hybrid commercial vehicles used for regional goods distribution can potentially run on 15%
less fuel than conventional vehicles. In addition, the modular design concept allows hybrid
buses or even hybrid construction vehicles.These days, on long-distance journeys, a heavy
goods vehicle equipped with a Bosch hybrid system can save up to 2,500 liters of diesel
per year.

Mono-CNG and Dual-fuel are eco-friendly solutions, for instance in megacities, or in
countries that are increasingly using ethanol as an alternative. The use of dual-fuel
technology in commercial vehicles can make it possible to replace around 90% of diesel
with gas.
As natural gas is up to 40% cheaper than diesel, the combination of the two constitutes
a low-cost solution.

DIESEL – ALTERNATIVE. NEW COMBINATIONS AS ALTERNATIVES FOR DIESEL FUEL.

Biogenic raw materials such as agricultural products that are unsuitable for food
production, or even waste grease and oils, can be reprocessed to create
“renewable” diesel fuel.
This alternative source of energy, mixed with conventional diesel, is powering
existing engines without the need for modification.

RENEWABLE DIESEL. RESEARCH WORLDWIDE ON PRODUCING FUEL IS
LEADING TO NEW, RESOURCE-EFFICIENT SOLUTIONS.
The fuel consumption of diesel vehicles has a further 15% reduction potential by internal
engine measures alone.
By combining the diesel with a 48 volt electric drive the raw emissions can be reduced by
about 20%. The fuel consumption, and accordingly the CO2 output, can be reduced by
another 15%.
Bosch sees good opportunities to increase the nitrogen oxide reduction to up to 80% with
a storage catalytic converter by using the 48 Volt Boost Recuperation System.
Electrification will increase the efficiency of urea-based systems (SCR catalytic converter)
as well.
Second-generation biofuels can even further improve the resource-efficiency and CO2
balance of the diesel. These fuels are not competing against food production.
