In der Tat: Es war ein furchtbarer Schock für uns alle, als wir von dem plötzlichen und völlig unerwarteten Tod unseres Freundes Jean-M arie Cadiou hörten. Diese schreckliche Nachricht lähmte uns geradezu und raubte uns alle Freude und Energie. Nur sehr langsam können wir zur Normalität zurückfinden.Leider war es E itschberger nicht vergönnt, Cadiou noch persönlich kennen zu lernen. Aber in den letzten drei Jahren hatte sich zwischen diesen eine reger Meinungsautausch per Internet entwickelt, der nicht nur sachlich ausgerichtet war. Für diese Jahr war ein erstes Treffen in Marktleuthen geplant, von dem sich Eitschberger sehr viel erhofft hatt, wollte er sich doch das enorme Wissen von Cadiou zu Nutze machen, was der weiteren Erforschung der Sphingidae zum Vorteil gereicht hätte. Schnitzler hatte das große Glück, seit Ende der 80er Jahre des vorigenJahrhunderts, eng mit Cadiou zusammen arbeiten zu können. Alljährlich wurde er von Cadiou in Frechen besucht. Das Ergebnis dieser Besuche waren einige Artbeschreibungen, die Cadiou durch die Bearbeitung des Materials der Sammlung von Schnitzler durchführen konnte.Wie sehr hatte sich Cadiou auf die Jare nach seiner Pensionierung gefreut, in denen er meinte, sich richtig seinem Hobby - den Sphingidae orbis terrarum - widmen zu können. Aber wie so oft bei Entomologen, nimmt auch Jean-M arie, im Zenit seines Lebens und seines Wissens, das analytische, tiefgreifendere Arbeiten erlaubt hätte, alles mit ins Grab: Ein enormer Verlust für uns alle!Im Internet öffnet sich bei der Suche unter „Jean-Marie Cadiou“ bei WWW.Google.de folgende Seite der European Commission, Directorate-General-Brussels, Joint Research Centre, Institutional and scientific relations, Public relations:„Jean-Marie CADIOU graduated from the Ecol Polytechnique in Paris in 1962 and from the Ecol des Mines de Paris in 1966. He began his career as civil servant in the French Ministry of Industry, working on enviromental issues.He then switched to computers and went to Stanford University where he received his Ph.D in Computer Science in 1972, and then returned to France to become Scientific Director at INRIA.In 1975, he joined IBM in the San Jose Research Laboratory, working in the area of relational data base and natural language translation. In 1977 he was appointed manager of the IBM France Scientific Centre in Paris and returned to California in 1979 to take responsibility for Programming Technology Research at the IBM San Jose Laboratory.In 1981, Dr. Cadiou left IBM to become Director of Information Technologies in the Commission of the European Communities. He also became Director of the ESPRIT Programme at its inception in 1984.

In September 1992, Dr. Cadiou took leave from the CEC to become Assistant Secretary General at NATO, in charge of Scientific and Enviromental Affairs.In January 1998 he returned to the European Commission to become Director of the Institute for Prospective Technological Studies of the Joint Center, located in Seville, Spain. In November 2002, he became Director of another Institute of the Joint Research Center, that for the Protection and the Security of the Citizen, located in Ispra, Italy.“Jean-M arie wurde am 19.XI.1941 in Neuilly/ Seine, Frankreich geboren. Erwuchs im 17. Distrikt von Parisauf und besuchte dort die Grundschule und danach das Lycée Carnot, das er mit der Auszeichnung „Premier prix de Mathématiques au Concours Général“ (bester Student des ganzen Landes) verließ. Sein Vater war Chefingenieur bei Citroen, wo er unter anderem den DS 19 und das legendäre Entchen, den 2CV, entwickelte. Jean-M arie hatte keine Geschwister. In früher Kindheit wurde schon sein Interesse an der Natur geweckt. Doch bevor er anfing Schmetterlinge zu sammeln und sein ganzes Augenmerk auf die Sphingidae zu verlegen, sammelte er alle Orchideenarten Frankreichs (für diese Informationen danken wir der Witwe von Jean-M arie, Frau N atasha Cadiou ganz herzlich). Sein plötzlich Tod am 21 .V.2007 in Brüssel, wo er auch begraben wurde, riß eine tiefe Wunde und hinterläßt eine schmerzliche Lücke für die Lepidopterologie im allgemeinen und für uns alle im besonderen, die ihn kannten oder die mit ihm in Kontakt standen.
