new talents – biennale cologne is the festival for young graduates from the areas of fine arts, film, composition, choreography and design. Every two years, over 50 artists from the region as well as national and international guests are presented in a two-week-long festival. With exhibitions, screenings, performances and talks, new talents offers a platform to the artists and creatives to present their work to a wider audience.

Greeting from the Head of the Cultural Department
Dear reader,
When an interdisciplinary festival which is dedicated explicitly to the presentation of young contemporary artists takes place in a city for the fifth time, this sends out a clear message. It is our confirmation of the significance of young artistic positions and shows the real potential of the graduates of the local universities and academies for the arts scene and society. Em-bedded in a comprehensive framework programme in which young talents from Morocco, Cuba, and China also take part, it is a sign for an open and cosmopolitan mindset, for which Cologne has always been known and which is today in more demand than ever before.
During the coming two weeks over 50 graduates from the areas of arts, film, compositi-on, choreography, and design from North-Rhine Westphalia are going to show their artistic works in exhibitions, concerts, and performances. For this fifth edition the Cologne arts biennial is betting on extraordinary positions, which are presented at equally extraordinary locations. The exhibition parcours in the Agrippa Cultural Quarter invites to a journey of discovery: not only to “classic” arts locations and museums, but also to shops, underground car parks, and the public space.
I am especially delighted to see that the festival is increasingly active across the city boundaries: in this year multiple partners in Bonn and Düsseldorf are taking part in presenting the “new talents”-works. We are also expecting new impulses from the international exchange which has been initiated between the Cologne arts biennial and the renowned biennials in Marrakesh and Havana and where seven artists will take part in the shared residency programme.
My gratitude goes to the resourceful initiator and director Jochen Heufelder and his colleagues!
I wish them many surprising and inspiring moments and encounters during this year’s Cologne arts biennial.

The new talents exhibition parcours in the Agrippa Cultural Quarter is again composed of multiple extraordinary locations: in underground car parks, churches, shops, roof terraces and gardens as well as house facades the selected artists show their contributions. Some of our participants are represented at multiple locations- and thus ensure surprising redisco-veries. The central exhibition parcours is expanded by hosting cultural institutions in Bonn and Düsseldorf.

Sina Seifee, KHM 2014Performative and explorational Sina Seifee approaches the term “Hayula” and expands his investigation with imaginative speculations, with dance (Luísa Saraiva) and sound (Ali Chakav). The term “Hayula” hereby refers to the assumption that the world and the “pre-cosmological being” could have emerged from the same primary matter. Selected texts from the Islamic- Iranian culture concerning “Hayula” open the gateway to more “monstrosities”.

Susana Pilar (Cuba), ISA Havanna 2008 & HfG Karlsruhe 2013 Spatially divided from the performer, connected by two screens and a live stream, the visitor can observe the artist during a 72-hour timeframe, communicate with her and control her in particular. Susana Pilar becomes the instrument of implementation for secondary parties, which in absence and anonymity can influence all her actions. The performance starts at the Cultural Quarter and ends in the Bundeskunsthalle Bonn. Within the framework of the Museumsmeilenfest.

To bolster this effect, new talents in this year has its own film parcours with unusual screening formats in salesrooms, bars, pubs, and under-ground garages.

Premieres For the anniversary edition of new talents the music programme focuses on outstanding musical features: altogether ten specially commissioned compositions will be premiered by two experimental ensembles. The Kunst-Station Sankt Peter with its unique accoustic offers the visitor this year again an extraordinary listening experience of new music in a sacral environment. At the KOLUMBA Kunstmuseum music meets Christian and and con-temporary art. With this framework, new talents offers young European composers and their mindsets and artistic approaches a befitting and exciting space.

“Stadt-Tanz-Fluss” The new talents dance parcoursFor the anniversary edition of new talents we follow the dance on an urban journey of disco-very into the Cologne city centre: six young choreographers present surprising site-specific performances in the public space and at hidden locations.
Following the slogan STADT-TANZ-FLUSS (CITY-DANCE-RIVER) this dance parcours follows the west-east axis from the St. Michael church at Brüsseler Platz to the Rhine. Along this route guided tours take place daily, accompanying visitors from location to location and thus shifting the perception of the every-day. Following the final performance the choreography award is awarded together with the Kunstsalon e.V.

The respective societal and political trans-formation processes are quite different and at the same time obvious, and the out-come completely open. How do cultural workers, artists and cultural institutions react to such changes? What does a chan-ging society expect from the arts in such a situation? What contribution are artists willing and able to make?
Questions like this and therefore questions about the understanding and self-image of arts and culture from the perspective of different nations form the core of the con-ference. The directors of the Havana, Mar-rakech and Cologne biennials talk about the possibilities and challenges that bien-nials offer in different stages of change.
Two further round tables with international protagonists will focus on the educational situation, the career opportunities right af-ter graduation, and various funding oppor-tunities for young artists in the respective countries.
The occasion for this conference is a coope-ration between the three biennials in Hava-na, Marrakech and Cologne. Following an opening event at the 6th Marrakech Biennial the cooperation is continued at the 5th new talents – biennale cologne. In 2017 the tri-angle is closed with an event in Havana, in the context of and preparing for the 13th Ha-vana Biennial in 2018.
This international festival exchange is ex-panded on the educational side by a coope-ration between new talents and the China Academy of Art.

But if one believes the rumors on the internet, no one is accepted. How it really works - who is accepted, when is it useful to enter, how to register – is the topic of this workshop by solicitor Andri Jürgensen, who for 15 years specializes in all questions around the KSK. And without any rumors.
