Starting in 1871, the city alternately emerged and declined as the German capital; was destroyed and re-built and re-designed. Berlin has always inspired philosophers, writers, artists and architects. The walled-in West Berlin of the Cold War era animated the young Rem Koolhaas to create his Exodus Project. Hubert Damisch portrayed the city as a "unique training ground for the deconstruction of the game of oppositions". Concurrent with the fall of the Berlin Wall, Bruno Latour discovered the 'Berlin Key', that surrealistic tool for locking in, locking out and locking up.

The seminar examines crucial scenes and structures in the metropole in the period between Wilhelminism andthe Berlin Republic. The topics range from the history of the Reichstag building, the Palace of the Republic andthe Karl-Marx-Allee. Albert Speer's plans for the world capital 'Germania' as well as Bruno Taut's'Peitschenknall' and Erich Mendelsohn's 'Universum' will be studied. The seminar will be further accompaniedby discussions of literary and cinematic contributions.
