FAMILY CONSTELLATION AS A BASIC M O T I V A T I O N A L AND

CHARACTER D E T E R M I N A N T

WALTER TOMAN Waltham, Mass. (USA)

A simple theory has been advanced, simple at least as far as its basic concepts and its "grammar" are concerned, with which the most essen- tial, meaningful, and complex of all psychological phenomena: inter- personal relationships, can be handled efficiently, comprehensively and thoroughly (see Toman 1, 2, 3, 4, 5).

According to this theory a person can be characterised relevantly by the people who have been living with him the longest, most intimately, and most regularly--i.e, by as little, or as much, if you like, as their existence or non-existence, their ranks among siblings, and their sexes--and by inci- dental losses of such people, or, in other words, by their family constel- lations. Among these people the parents c a n , in turn, be characterised by their sibling configurations and by losses that they have suffered. In- terpersonal relationships such as friendships, partnerships, dates, mar- riages, depend on the family constellations of the person involved in the sense that any extra-familial interpersonal relationship will tend to have better chances of happiness and success, other things being equal, the closer it duplicates for the partners concerned the earliest, i.e. intra- familial, interpersonal relationships.

These assumptions and their derivations have been borne out by a num- ber of systematic studies (of a random sample of clinical cases of adults, of a sample of children and their parents coming to guidance centers, of several samples of friendships, of a sample of marriages, and of a sample of an unusual choice of profession) as well as in many individual clinical cases (1, 2, 3, 5).

As an outline of a first synthesis attempted {5), the following major types of sibling positions shall be characterised psychologic'lily: the oldest brother of brother(s), of sister(s), the ymmgest brother of brother(s), of sister(s), the oldest sister of sister(s), of brother(s), the youngest sister of sister(s), of brotber(s). Intermediary sibling positions, only children, and twins, as well as the relationships of the major types of sibling posi- tions to the major types of parents (i.e. types of their sibling positions) shall also be treated briefly and paradigmalically.
