Welcome to Fte, a multimedia celebration of

downtown Greenville. Its art. Its entertainment.

Its personality. From its theaters and galleries

to its shops and restaurants to its green spaces

    and public squares, downtown Greenville

embodies a unique spirit that can be glimpsed

through every window and sensed on every

    evening stroll.

To attend a show, to dine in a restaurant, to

discover a festival in downtown Greenville these

are not mere activities, they are true experiences.

And should be celebrated. Challenge is: the once

simple offering of downtown has exploded in

recent years into a cornucopia of culture,

cuisine and curiosities. Its not enough to know

where to go and what to do, but to know where

else to go and whats next. Questions that can

    be answered all, through Fte.

Flip through the electronic pages of this monthly

periodical to discover the sights and sounds from

this enchanting place. Insight from those who

know. And the information you require to be in

the know. Show schedules. Event dates. Dining

menus. Web links. Video. Audio. More and more.

Everything you need to be in the right place at

the right time and to join in the celebration.

Trey Pennington is a story prospector and professional

speaker. He founded the 747-member Social Media

Club Greenville and started clubs in Spartanburg and

Columbia. Youll nd his blog on marketing at

treypennington.comand hear him each week on

the radio program Open for Business.

If you need help to grow your business, you can

    nd it in Greenville.

Earlier this year, John Warner and Aaron von

Frank heard Google was looking for a town just

like Greenville. Google wants to experiment with

super high speed Internet and theyre on the

hunt for the town that wants them the most.

John and Aaron put together a plan designed

to get Googles attention. They only had 13

days to accomplish their grand plan called

    Google on Main.

You probably already know the story: on March

20, 2010, 5,000 gathered in Fa lls Park to light

up the night with LED glow sticks creating a huge

Google logo along the Reedy River. (Okay, Aaron

gures there were about 2,000 with the glow

sticks and I gured there were about 3,000 on

Liberty Bridge and all throughout the park

watching; we both gure the gure will be about

10,000 when we tell the story next year.)

What you may not know is what it took to make

the event happen. What happened behind the

scenes is the secret sauce of our community:

individuals and groups worked together to

    coordinate all the logistics, administration,

    permitting, licensing, insuring, nancing and

promoting necessary to make Google on Main a

reality. NEXT and Greenville Forward stepped up

to cover insurance requirements, the Peace

Center gave access to their amphitheater, and

folks at the City worked their magic, too. In the

thick of all the planning and red tape, Mayor

White even said, Weve got your back.

    Its that spirit of communitypurposefully

cooperating to help each other succeedwoven

through the warp and woof of our region, which

makes us strong. To keep us strong, well need to

not only take advantage of Google on Main

opportunities, but also keep on doing the ordinary

weaving of community by seeking out and helping

    groups already connecting to cooperate.

Here are four groups who connect to help

    businesses address technology or marketing

    challenges and opportunities:

Greenville is a community made resilientby people who care to help each other

    8

The GSA Technology Council (GSATC) provides

    networking, education, business development, and

community service opportunities to career minded

technology professionals and high tech entrepreneurs

through its newsletter, meetings, job fair, and

    community training programs.

Social Media Club provides regular meetings and

educational opportunities so those intrigued by

social media can get connected and help each other

    use it effectively.

The American Advertising Federation of Greenville

(AAF Greenville) is comprised of professionals who

work in advertising, marketing, public relations and all

other related industry businesses throughout the region.

As a chapter of the American Advertising Federation

(AAF), the AAF Greenville encourages professional

    development through seminars, award presentations,

    networking and industry leader recognition.

Public Relations Society, SC Chapter (SCPRSA)

serves public relations practitioners all over South

Carolina with a variety of regional meetings and events.

    SCPRSA hosts monthly professional development

luncheons in Charleston, Columbia and Gre enville.

The luncheons feature dynamic speakers, opportunities

to learn about the profession, increased knowledge

about topics relevant to the practitioner and valuable

    networking time with colleagues.

These are only four groups. You probably know of many

more. Would you please visit the Facebook Page for Fte

and let others know about them, too?

Lynn is a member with excellence of the South Carolina Watercolor

Society, a signature member of the GA Watercolor Society, and a bo ard

as one of twenty emerging artists across the US. She lives in downtown

Greenville with her husband Henk VanDyk.

I love the watercolor medium. The uidity, and unlimited ability to

surprise, both add to the enjoyment of painting. I am exhilarated by

the process as well as the product, whether I am painting a oral,

a portrait or a cityscape. And I feel fortunate when I am able to

    communicate my joy to others.
