The year 2012 at RWTH Aachen University was very much marked by the decisions within the Excellence Initiative. This omnipresent competition provided our crucial target for the year, namely “defending our title”, and defined the everyday work of many members of the University over a long period of time. After many exciting and strenuous months, we are now happy and proud that our Institutional Strategy „RWTH 2020: Meeting Global Challenges. The Integrated Interdisciplinary Univer-sity of Technology” has been approved by the grants committee, along with three further proposals in the Graduate School and Cluster of Excellence funding lines. RWTH Aachen University’s leading position within the German academic landscape was thereby confirmed, and its international visibility received a further boost. This success was made possible by numerous people from all the different groups, so here I would like to express my sincere thanks for their enormous dedication.

IhrUniv.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ernst SchmachtenbergRektor

Along with the Excellence title, what we have also gained, thanks to the months of preparation, is a sharpened view of what makes up RWTH Aachen University at its core and what its success in teaching and research is based on: The Aachen Way – the well-established and goal-oriented cooperation of professors, students, and academic and non-academic staff. This constructive way in which the members of the University act for and with one another is a precious resource that will help us form RWTH Aachen University into one of the world’s best integrated, interdiscipli-nary universities of technology by 2020. The first foundation stones for this develop-ment objective have already been laid. Eight profile areas have been identified and equipped with effective structures that further advance our relevant interdisciplinary research.

Alongside the Excellence Initiative, life at the University brought other challenges with it in 2012 that were no less great. Thanks to the double cohort of secondary school graduates, RWTH Aachen University reached an absolute historical record with 37,917 students enrolled in the winter semester of 2012/13. That means it is necessary to make space, in good time, to accommodate the immense need of rooms for teaching and studying, as well for students to live in Aachen. Our new lecture hall centre on Professor-Pirlet-Straße has been completed and the new lec-ture hall centre on Claßenstraße is under construction. Additional building projects for even more study areas and laboratory rooms are to follow. Moreover, more than 400 new positions, including 18 professorships, are being established. We can there-fore be confident that the students at RWTH Aachen University will find attractive conditions for studying at an excellent university that is strong on research, not only now but also in the future.

I hope you find reading our annual report for 2012 interesting and informative.

Best regards,Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ernst SchmachtenbergRector

In the first Excellence phase, the “HUMIC” project demonstrated how acceptance evaluations for

complex technical systems (such as mobile communications) can

be integrated into the technology development cycle. The successful interdisciplinary approach is now

further expanded on as part of the Institutional Strategy II, such as in

the profile area “Mobility & Trans-port Engineering,” where accep-

tance evaluations of age-sensitive assistance systems in cars are being

conducted.

“RWTH strives to be one of the world’s best integrated, interdisciplinary techni-cal universities by 2020,” Rector Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ernst Schmachtenberg emphasised when announcing the results to numerous guests. He thanked all the university groups that had made comprehensive efforts over the past few years to succeed in this competition.

The approved projects in the three funding lines of the Excellence Initiative from 2012 to 2017 are as follows:

The institutional strategy “RWTH 2020: Meeting Global Challenges. The Inte-grated, Interdisciplinary Technical University“

The Graduate School “Aachen Institute for Advanced Study in Computational Engineering Science (AICES)” The Cluster of Excellence “Integrative Production Technology for High-Wage

Countries” The Cluster of Excellence “Tailor-Made Fuels from Biomass”

Our Goal: The Integrated Interdisciplinary University of Technology

With its institutional strategy, RWTH hopes to make a significant contribution towards top academic research in Germany and participate in the global competi-tion between universities. To this end, it is fully exploiting its scientific potential. The complex challenges of the future are being met with research strategies with an integrated approach that require the cooperation of all faculties and disciplines.

In order to reach the set goals, four measures have been defined:

An internationally recognised scientific profile With the aid of its core competencies in engineering and natural sciences, RWTH

will further sharpen its internationally visible scientific profile. Moreover, the inte-gration of the humanities, social sciences, economics and medicine has to con-tinue in order to be able to address questions of great scientific, technological and social relevance. To this end, the natural sciences will be further reinforced and interdisciplinary research specifically promoted.

For the second time now, RWTH has been successful in the Excellence Initiative of the German federal and state governments. The Institutional Strategy, “RWTH 2020: Meeting Global Challenges. The Inte-grated Interdisciplinary University of Technology,” was approved on 15 June 2012 by the appropriate grants committee. Apart from the Institutional Strategy, the committee approved three proposals in the other two funding lines, Graduate Schools and Clusters of Excellence.

JARA: Pooling expertise – shaping the futureThe Jülich Aachen Research Alliance (JARA) between RWTH Aachen University and Forschungszentrum Jülich will further expand its strategic cooperation. The partnership between a university and a major non-university research institution can be seen as a national model for consolidating programmatic and disciplinary research. Through the joint strategic planning of research, teaching and infra-structure (JARA Institutes), JARA will expand in selected areas.

Place to be: Excellent science requires an excellent working environment RWTH implements mechanisms by which to acquire the world’s best research-ers and students. Thus it creates a fertile environment for teaching and learning processes.

Cooperative management principles and structuresInnovative mechanisms for cooperation, competition and administration are developed and implemented. By establishing inter-faculty profile areas, interdisci-plinary research on important future topics will receive a significant boost. A strat-egy fund is being established for the implementation of strategic planning.

The research group “Scanning Probe Techniques” led by Professor Dr. Markus Morgenstern, JARA-FIT and II. Institute of Physics B at RWTH Aachen, deals, in particular, with microscopes for use at low temperatures and in magnetic fields. Using these microscopes with high energy resolution, complex electron and spin systems can be studied down to the atomic scale – such as graphene, which is a sheet of carbon just one atom thick.

Inter-Faculty Profile Areas

Interdisciplinarity at RWTH Aachen has been substantially promoted since the late 1980s, such as through the work in the Interdisciplinary Forums. In eight newly defined profile areas, the ability for interdisciplinary research is to be significantly advanced, as part of the implementation of the institutional strategy. These profile areas reflect the University’s interdisciplinary portfolio and presuppose excellent basic research.

The following profile areas are being established: Computational Science & Engineering (CompSE) Energy, Chemical & Process Engineering (ECPE) Information & Communication Technology (ICT) Material Science & Engineering (MatSE) Medical Science & Technology (MedST) Molecular Science & Engineering (MSE) Mobility & Transport Engineering (MTE) Production Engineering (ProdE)

Page 16: Geschäftsbericht 2012 - Report 2012

Folgende Profilbereiche werden etabliert: Computational Science & Engineering (CompSE) Energy, Chemical & Process Engineering (ECPE) Information & Communication Technology (ICT) Material Science & Engineering (MatSE) Medical Science & Technology (MedST) Molecular Science & Engineering (MSE) Mobility & Transport Engineering (MTE) Production Engineering (ProdE)

das Potenzial zur Lösung neuer wissenschaftlicher interdisziplinärer Fragestellungen gefördert werden;

The goal is the effective organisation of interdisciplinary collaboration at RWTH in a way that conforms to the content and measures of the “Strategy 2020” and the University’s institutional strategy “RWTH 2020: Meeting Global Challenges”. It will be implemented, in particular, by reinforcing communication between scientists and reducing the length of

processing paths; pooling scientific expertise and research activities; creating new possibilities for existing initiatives to be integrated and for the gen-

eration of ideas to be managed with a bottom-up approach; promoting impulses for inter-faculty structural and development planning and

promoting the potential to solve new scientific, interdisciplinary questions; increasing the national and international visibility of the University’s scientific profile.

AICES Graduate School

The approved continuation of the AICES Graduate School highlights the successful work of RWTH in promoting young academics in the context of highly topical basic research: According to AICES coordinator Prof. Marek Behr, Ph.D., “by expanding AI-CES across three additional faculties, the graduate school will be able to implement its scientific strategies and innovative goals even more thoroughly.”

In order to cover further seminal fields of research, the number of groups of young researchers will be almost doubled. Furthermore, AICES will deepen its coopera-tion with Forschungszentrum Jülich and the Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung (Max Planck Institute for Iron Research) in Düsseldorf in order to combine new basic scientific knowledge with application-oriented research.

“Integrative Production Technology for High-Wage Countries” Cluster of Excellence

The Cluster of Excellence “Integrative Production Technology for High-Wage Coun-tries” was also approved for a further five years: “The continued funding reflects

19

the particular significance of production for the national economy and the people in Germany,” says coordinator Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christian Brecher.

Production engineering makes a significant contribution to the prosperity and social stability in high-wage countries. Manufacturing companies today are faced with tougher conditions that emerge as economic, ecological and social challenges in the wake of dynamic, global developments. In the future, the models and technologies that were already developed in the first phase of the Cluster of Excellence will be combined to form an integrated production theory. This integrated approach seeks to enable production companies to respond quickly to global challenges and to benefit accordingly from this head start.

“Tailor-Made Fuels from Biomass” Cluster of Excellence

The positive decision for the Cluster of Excellence “Tailor-Made Fuels from Bio-mass” is an encouragement to the scientists who work there. As coordinator Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stefan Pischinger puts it: “Although basic research goals have been reached in the last five years, the team still have a large chunk of work ahead of them in order to make as large a contribution as possible to a sustainable future mobility.”

Over the coming five years, model-based methods will be implemented to a greater extent, which can predict the properties and production paths of new fuel compo-nents. Simultaneously, the cluster is developing experiments for the quick determi-nation of the combustion properties of tailor-made fuels (“rapid fuel screening”) in order to improve the accuracy of these simulation models and to be able to evaluate the quality of new fuel candidates with as little delay as possible. Furthermore, new combustion processes and engines are to be developed that are adapted to and optimised for the tailor-made fuels in order to fully exploit the potential of the fuels.

23

Professor Wuttig, were you relieved when the positive response to the Excellence proposal came from Bonn in the middle of June?

Of course! But I was and continue to be proud of our university and the many RWTH members of staff who worked on the contents of the Excellence proposal over the course of many weeks. For me, the continued funding in the Excellence Initiative is the result of real teamwork. It is a distinct strength of our university that as many people as possible are involved in complex processes. Prior to submitting the proposal, for example, ideas and visions that aim at guaranteeing the future of RWTH Aachen University and its international visibility were developed in the con-text of university-wide workshops and work groups.

“We Can Learn From Apple”

Interview with Professor WuttigAs a scientist, Prof. Dr.rer.nat. Matthias Wuttig deals with quantum physical challenges. However, the Chair of Experimental Physics I A likes to look beyond the limits of his own subject field. For example, as a spokesperson of the Strat-egy Board of RWTH Aachen University, he made a significant contribution to the Excellence proposal for the University’s Institutional Strategy. In this interview, the physicist explains which impulses and change processes from the first phase of the Excellence Initiative are, in his opinion, coming to fruition – and what goals RWTH has set for the second funding period.

Page 24: Geschäftsbericht 2012 - Report 2012

24

The initial funding period from 2007 to 2012 has now come to an end. What have the first five years of “Excellence” achieved at RWTH from your point of view?

Effects of the Excellence Initiative can be seen in many things, large and small. Al-low me to highlight three aspects in particular. First, the Excellence Initiative has brought about a measurable strengthening of our educational and research institu-tion. To name just one example from my direct research environment: thanks to the new funding, Faculty 1 was able to announce a competition to promote young scientific talent with the goal of generating new topics and talents for the Univer-sity. After an intensive and extremely productive exchange of ideas, we are filling eight new junior professorships with excellent young scientific talent. Second, I would like to mention the successful networking between engineering and the natural sciences, medicine, the humanities, economics and the social sciences, such as through the Project Houses HUMTEC and IMP and through disciplines like Medical Engineering. Even though RWTH Aachen University as a technical univer-sity is traditionally an engineering heavyweight, the complexity of many sociopoliti-cal, technical and economic challenges calls for interdisciplinary cooperation. Here it is not enough to develop technologically innovative products. The ecological implications and the social acceptance of products, to name just two of many fac-tors, play a crucial role in global topics – for instance, when looking for answers to the questions of energy supply or future mobility. The company Apple can serve as a good example here. They not only produce technically innovative devices, they have also managed to convey a positive attitude to life to millions of people by means of outstanding design and professional marketing strategies, among other things. The acceptance of their products is tremendous, but this is precisely not merely due to their innovative technological solutions.

What goals are particularly being pursued in the second funding period?

The RWTH institutional strategy states that we desire to become an interdisciplinary and integrated university that is internationally visible. The increase in interdiscipli-narity has been progressing well since the first funding period. Now the task is to create structures by which to position ourselves as an integrated and internationally recognised university. The focus here is on integration: currently, we have a classical faculty structure at RWTH Aachen. In order to be able to solve complex scientific challenges, we are simultaneously developing innovative research platforms, such as the new I3 institutes, which facilitate inter-faculty research. For this, an internal university ideas competition is currently underway in order to distribute flexible fi-nancial resources from a strategy fund. Incidentally, the strategy fund is, in itself, an impressive example of how the entire university is backing the Excellence strategy. Part of the annual eight million Euros of fund money is provided by the faculties. In other words, they are surrendering funds that they would otherwise be entitled to – or, to put it another way, they have to go through an internal university competition in order to receive these funds.

Page 26: Geschäftsbericht 2012 - Report 2012

26

27

While we are on the subject of funds: what happens when the second funding period is over?

That is a difficult question. Already now, universities are de facto in a competition in which there are clearly no more rewards for success. Policy-makers have ruled out the possibility of further funding periods within the Excellence Initiative. As RWTH Aachen University, we have our own commitment to ensuring that our standard of excellence is maintained. However, without appropriate additional funding, this will undoubtedly be harder. I would therefore point out that the original goal of the Excellence Initiative on the part of the German federal and state governments was to raise the international profile of excellent German universities. This goal has not yet been reached, if you look at international university rankings. Furthermore, it is my opinion that a nation that is poor in natural resources and lives off knowledge acquisition and transfer cannot afford to neglect the educational landscape in its own country. In this respect, I hope and expect that policy makers will create ap-propriate conditions beyond 2017.

Projects in the field of electromobility

On 20 June 2012, the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) announced that econnect Germany from the Electromobility Programme of the federal government had been selected as a flagship in the field of information and communication technologies (ICT) in electromobility. The project is exploring sustainable mobility concepts in the municipal environment. The focus is on the in-telligent networking of energy and traffic systems through ICT. Six RWTH institutes, coordinated by the Chair of Computer Science 5 (Information Systems) headed by Prof. Dr.rer.pol. Matthias Jarke, are significantly contributing to the project.

Moreover, in November 2012, the German Research Foundation (DFG) gave the green light for the new RWTH Research Training Group “Integrated Energy Supply Modules for On-Road Electromobility” (Spokesperson: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stefan Pischinger).

ERC Starting Grants for up-and-coming researchers

With the ERC Starting Grants for excellent up-and-coming scientists in Europe, the European Research Council (ERC) supports basic research and facilitates the estab-lishment of a research team. No fewer than three young RWTH scientists are receiv-ing support:

In his project “Synthetic Expansion of Magnetic Molecules Into Spintronic Devices” (MOLSPINTRON), Prof. Dr.rer.nat. Paul Kögerler is researching molecular mag-nets for the microelectronics of the future. These have an extremely low energy consumption and provide highly complex switching functions that are not easily achieved with conventional semiconductor technology. The basis of these properties is found in the joint use of the magnetic and electronic quantum state of an indi-vidual magnetic molecule.

Prof. Dr.sc.techn.

With his project “Computer Vision for Scene Understanding from a First-Person Perspective” (CV-SUPER), Prof. Dr.sc.techn. Bastian Leibe is pursuing the goal of developing central algorithms for the visual understanding of complex inner-city scenes from the point of view of a user. This includes, in particular, recognising other dynamic objects, such as people and cars, and interpreting their current movements and interactions within the context of the observed scene. The technology to be developed can be used for many applications – from portable navigation devices for the visually impaired to future generations of service robots and intelligent vehicles.

Nanoscale drug vehicles, such as polymers, micelles and liposomes, have been used clinically for a number of years to improve the pharmacokinetics, the distribution in the body and the tumour concentrations of chemotherapeutic substances. In con-trast to the established nano-chemotherapeutic approaches, Dr.med. Twan Lam-mers, in his ERC-funded research project “Neoadjuvant Nanomedicines for Vascular Normalization” (NeoNaNo), does not want to directly kill the tumour cells, but rather normalise the vessel structures in the tumours with inflammation-inhibiting nano-agents in order to improve the efficiency of the radio- and chemotherapeutic processes implemented afterwards.

ERC Advanced Grant for established researchers

The Advanced Grant is awarded by the European Research Council (ERC) to excel-lent researchers with considerable experience in their research field. For the five-year funding period, grant holders receive a total of 2.5 million Euros. With the grant, the ERC supports Prof. Dr.rer.nat. Dieter Enders’s work in the field of Asymmetric Organocatalytic Domino Reactions. Since about the turn of the millennium, the research field of organocatalysis has been developing extremely rapidly and today can be seen as the third pillar of catalysis, besides biocatalysis and metal catalysis. Its advantage is that it makes possible to use small organic molecules, such as the amino acid proline, as catalysts. If such an organocatalyst controls a consecutive series of reactions in a reaction vessel, researchers call this a cascade or domino re-action. This is very favourable, as the reactant goes through multiple transformations without isolation of intermediate products. Organocatalytic domino reactions enable a very environmentally-friendly and economically favourable method of catalysis that is currently generating high expectations in the chemical industry.

4 July 2012 was a great day for RWTH Particle Physics. The teams of scientists working on the two experiments CMS and ATLAS at the European research centre CERN in Geneva announced the discovery of a new particle. This could be the long-sought-for Higgs particle, whose existence no one had previously been able to prove with certainty. Around 70 scientists from RWTH are involved in the CMS experiment. They form the largest university group there. “It is possible that we have succeeded in making the Higgs particle visible through the collision of protons

in the LHC at CERN,” Prof. Dr.rer.nat. Achim Stahl reports. The RWTH Chair of Experimental Physics further emphasised, “Only after further investigations can we decide whether this really is the missing piece in the Standard Model or whether we have found something completely unexpected. Either would be a great discovery.”

The Large Hadron Collider, or LHC for short, is almost 27 kilometres long. It acceler-ates protons to almost the speed of light, causing them to collide with previously unattained energies. At the collision points, the particle detectors ATLAS and CMS function as huge particle cameras: they record the signals of the collisions, which are then reconstructed as visible results on a worldwide computing grid. Now that it has been running for two years, the scientists are sure that among the millions and millions of collisions they have investigated, there are a few in which a new particle has been produced. Initial measurements show properties that are consistent with those of the Higgs boson. Aachen particle physicists and their colleagues in other locations are working intensively on further evaluation of the experiment.

Stefan Schael vom I. Physikalischen Institut.

A particular strength of Particle Physics in Aachen is the close cooperation between experimentation and theory. Theoretical predictions on the production of Higgs particles form a focus of the Collaborative Research Centre / Transregio “Compu-tational Particle Physics”, which is coordinated by Prof. Dr.rer.nat. Michael Krämer from the Teaching and Research Area Physics (Theoretical Elementary Particle Phys-ics). In the Research Training Group “Particles and Astro-Particle Physics in the Light of the LHC,” the experimental and theoretical results are then being combined in jointly supervised doctoral theses in order to investigate the properties of the new particle.

Comparison of results of particle collisions and cosmic particle radiation

The I. Institute of Physics at RWTH Aachen is playing a leading role in the AMS Experiment on the German side. Thus researchers of the Aachen university are once again involved in international top-level research into astrophysics and particle physics. The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer – AMS for short – was taken to the International Space Station on the final flight of Space Shuttle Endeavour in May 2011. The AMS-02 experiment is the most elaborate space observatory ever built. It captures cosmic particle radiation at a height of 400 kilometres above the earth and produces pictures with a resolution of 200,000 pixels in a matter of seconds. The results are then compared with those of the particle accelerator at CERN. “If the two fingerprints match, we have opened the door to a new view of the world,” predicts Prof. Dr.rer.nat. Stefan Schael of the I. Institute of Physics.

In concrete terms, a current doctoral candidate in the Research Training Group “Particles and Astro-Particle Physics in the Light of the LHC” is currently investi-gating possible traces of the dark matter of the universe. By combining the results from AMS and LHC, this central question of physics can be examined in a new and comprehensive way.

An international collaboration of 600 scientists developed and constructed the AMS over a period of about 15 years. With a weight of 7.5 metric tons and a volume of five by four by three metres, it measures the exact composition of the charged cosmic radiation. The research project is led by Nobel Prize winner and honorary doctor of RWTH Aachen, Prof. Dr. Samuel C.C. Ting from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and is intended to run on the Space Station until at least 2020.

“With the AMS Experiment, we are seeking to explore the limits of today’s physics,” explains RWTH scientist Stefan Schael. He adds that “we want to know why the universe now only consists of matter and what happened to the antimatter that must have been produced in equal amounts during the Big Bang.”

Recording the passage of 16 billion particles per year

The AMS Experiment consists of several individual measuring instruments. Their task is to provide redundant information about the energy, charge and mass of par-ticles in cosmic radiation. It records the passage of approximately 16 billion particles on the ISS each year. These data are transmitted to the control centre at CERN via satellites. The experiment is controlled from there and the proper functioning of the individual detectors monitored. The raw data of the experiment can be analysed using complex mathematical algorithms. The observed particle spectra are compared with physical models of the formation and diffusion of cosmic rays in our Milky Way.

For many years now, the participation of the German groups in the CMS experiment has been sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. within the research programme FSP-102, titled “Elementary Particle Physics with the CMS Experiment.” The spokesperson for the programme is RWTH Professor Dr. Achim Stahl.

For this purpose, all 300,000 individual electronic measuring channels of the AMS need to be permanently calibrated. Many of the activities on the ISS affect the measurement data. These include movements of the Space Station and when astronauts board and disembark. Such interferences need to be interpreted and calibrated out. The aim is to achieve optimum sensitivity for new physical effects with the complex interplay of the individual measuring instruments. To this end, the analysis programmes used have been constantly improved over the last two years.

As of September 2012, the AMS project is part of the scientific programme of the newly founded section JARA-FAME - Forces and Matter Experiments. Within the context of the Jülich Aachen Research Alliance, JARA for short, the cause of the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the universe is to be explored. With the aid of the computing centre at Forschungszentrum Jülich, it was possible to reanalyse all the AMS raw data of the last 18 months and to further improve their sensitivity.

The scarcity of raw materials and the growing demand for components with better performance results in the increased application of fibre-reinforced plastics in many sectors of industry. A prominent example is the automotive industry, which is seeking, for example, to compensate for high battery weight in electric vehicles.

The special lightweight construction potential of FRP results from the material’s composition: by specifically aligning millions of individual fibres within a component, enclosed in a plastic matrix, huge weight reductions can be achieved compared to metallic lightweight construction materials. Superfine carbon fibres have a diameter of five to twelve micrometres. A human hair, by comparison, measures approximately

Fibre-reinforced plastics are light but also up to twice as stiff as steel, and they provide the potential for significant weight savings. Due to the scarcity of raw materials and the growing demand for improved performance, they are now in the focus of intense research.

Fibre-reinforced plastics – FRP for short – are light but also up to twice as stiff as steel. In automotive and aerospace engineering, components made of FRP can save resources and reduce weight.

Sonderforschungsbereich stellte erste Weichen

70 micrometres. The carbon fibres have a stiffness of up to 450 gigapascals and a strength of over 4,500 megapascals. This is roughly double that of very high-strength steels.

There are many options of combining different types of fibres and plastics and of aligning the fibres within the component, and different processing techniques have been developed. The application of FRP in industry requires intensive cooperation between the natural sciences and engineering. RWTH, with its institutes in the relevant disciplines of polymer chemistry, textile, plastics and production engineer-ing and applications in aerospace and automotive engineering, provides an ideal environment in which to research and develop these materials.

A Collaborative research centre set the course

Already at the end of the 1980s, the course was first set for interdisciplinary coop-eration with the Collaborative Research Centre 332 “Production Engineering for Components Made of Non-Metallic Fibre-Reinforced Composites.” Today, the well-established network has grown to include further partners and has its focus on the current demands of industry.

Since 2007, the Institute of Textile Technology (ITA), the Institute of Plastics Processing (IKV) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology (IPT) have been working on the development of manufacturing processes suitable for mass production within DFG Research Unit 860 “New Process Chains for Composites: Integration of Preforming, Impregnation, Forming and Curing”. In seven closely coordinated sub-projects in textile, production and automation engineering and polymer processing, they have been addressing the manufacture of plastic compo-nents – with an integrated approach right up to the final component. The focus has been on significantly reducing the cycle time for component production. This has created the basis which today contributes towards establishing FRP in high-volume applications.

Optimising material behaviour in a crash

Among other things, IKV is working on further developing the gap impregnation process, which is being funded by the Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia. By this process, the manufacturing of an engine bonnet with an integrated reinforce-

In cooperation with the Institute of Automotive Engineering (ika) and with industry partners, all the relevant demands, such as surface quality and pedestrian impact protection, are being taken into consideration through the appropriate dimensioning, design and concluding testing.

Central to a further application-oriented research project by ika and ITA are the foundations for the simulation of the behaviour of carbon-fibre reinforced plastics under crash impact. The scientists are facilitating the prediction of material behav-iour in models of total vehicle simulation, thereby increasing the passive safety of future generations of lightweight construction vehicles.

A crucial requirement for the resource-efficient use of fibre-reinforced plastics is improved material utilisation in their primary use, as well as secondary use through recycling. As part of the research project CAMISMA, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, carbon fibre nonwoven fabrics are being

developed which allow for the use of by-products from fibre production and recy-cled material in connection with a thermoplastic matrix. The production of the non-woven fabrics and semi-finished products is being investigated at ITA. Using these materials in combination with fibre-reinforced laminates and metals, ika is develop-ing a lightweight seat structure. A research consortium made up of industrial com-panies and IKV is supporting the project.

The Dreamliner needs less fuel

The Institute for Lightweight Construction (ilb) at RWTH is dedicated to the use of FRP in aerospace engineering. Such high-performance components are utilised in aircraft construction to likewise achieve reductions in weight and save fuel. With the Dreamliner – the Boeing 787 – an aircraft is on the market for the first time that largely consists of carbon-fibre composite materials. ilb is developing methods by which to be able to calculate such structures more quickly and efficiently. Thus, the institute is involved in the MAAXIMUS project, which receives funding from the EU’s Seventh Framework Programme. 57 international partners are developing calculation tools that will facilitate the fast development of aircraft fuselages made of fibre-reinforced composites through to the post-buckling field.

The aim of the project “MegaCarbon – Resource-Efficient and Highly Productive Fabrication of Carbon Fibres for a Broad Spectrum of Applications” at ITA is the sys-tematic further development of the manufacturing process of carbon fibres on the basis of polyacrylonitrile fibres. The project is to create the technical and economic conditions to develop new applications and markets for carbon fibres and the com-posite materials made from them. The key to this is the resource and cost-efficient production of carbon fibres. Apart from ITA, the project consortium includes the Chair for Laser Technology (LLT), the Department of Chemical Process Engineering, the Department for Industrial Furnaces and Heat Engineering (IOB), DWI Interac-tive Materials Research at RWTH Aachen, and several industrial companies.

Aachen Centre for Integrative Lightweight Design

A logical expansion of the composite network is the Aachen Centre for Integrative Lightweight Design (AZL) at RWTH Aachen, which was founded in 2012. The aim is to use this platform to transfer lightweight construction to large-scale production. This is achieved by means of interdisciplinary cooperation between materials science and production engineering. To supplement the existing lightweight construction activities, the focus is on two subject areas: first, investigations are being made into how continuous process chains can be realised for the large-scale production of lightweight components. A further emphasis is on the development and production of multi-material systems that are optimised in terms of load and costs.

As of 2014, AZL will have its own technical centre and office building on the Melaten Campus. Through the installation of large facilities, it will be possible to develop the production of components on a 1:1 scale together with partners from RWTH and industrial companies.

Catalysis is a key technology of our day. It is needed for the production of medicines as much as for reducing exhaust fumes in a car’s catalytic converter. Biological catalysts or, in another word, enzymes, are convincing above all because they are enormously efficient and environmentally friendly. Taking this interdisciplinary interface between the biological system and reaction engineering applications as the starting point, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Antje C. Spieß is car-rying out research at the Chair of Enzyme Process Technology of the Aachen Chemical Engineering and Interactive Materials Research, DWI at RWTH Aachen. In the Cluster of Excellence “Tailor-Made Fuels from Biomass,” through a mechanistic un-derstanding of the biocatalytic processes in their interaction with new solvents, she is contributing towards making biomass efficiently available as a source of energy and materials. Likewise, bio-inspired polymers can serve towards improving biocatalysts. This question is being pursued by the Collaborative Research Centre “Functional Microgels and Microgel Systems,” among others.

“So that I may perceive whatever holds the world together in its inmost folds ...”- this Faustian ques-tion, formulated in Goethe’s tragedy, has engaged people for thousands of years. It is also a guiding theme in particle physics. Prof. Dr.rer.nat. Michael Krämer from the Teaching and Research Area Physics (Theoretical Elementary Particle Physics) is a mem-ber of the DFG Review Board “Particles, Nuclei and Fields” and spokesperson of SFB-Transregio 9 “Computational Particle Physics.” His key research areas shed light on the dark side of the universe: How do particles get their mass? What does dark matter consist of? How symmetrical is the world? Krämer and his team put the pieces of the puzzle to-gether by means of elaborate calculations and by in-terpreting experimental measurements at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC/CERN) and in astrophysical experiments. In this way, they hope to pave the way towards a simple and elegant theory of matter and the development of the universe.

Groundbreaking concepts in electronic informa-tion processing are based on completely new elec-tronic properties of materials like graphene and on the control of individual electrons and atoms. Prof. Dr.rer.nat. Markus Morgenstern, Chair of Experimental Physics, and his team are research-ing methods of creating prototypes of such units and analysing them on the atomic scale. For exam-ple, microscopes are being developed that display individual atoms and can simultaneously count the individual charge-carrying electrons. Other micro-scopes make it possible to track the dynamics of individual atoms on time scales that span less than a billionth of a second. Furthermore, the physicists are investigating materials that, like graphene, only con-sist of a surface or, as volume material, only conduct electrical current on the surface. Their activities are integrated in the JARA research alliance. From 2007 to 2011, Morgenstern was the founding director of the section JARA-FIT (Fundamentals of Future Infor-mation Technology).

The Chair of Machine Tools at the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) at RWTH Aachen has been dealing with basic re-search, development and optimisation approaches for machine tools and production machines for a number of decades. The focus of research is, in particular, on investigating the individual mechanical components – such as spindles, guides, bearings, gear units and tooth systems – as well as on design and calculation, right up to the overall system. Through the integra-tion of functions using software engineering, it also covers the field of control and automation technol-ogy. The cross-cutting topics that result from this, such as mechatronic system design, have therefore formed part of the research and teaching profile for many years. In the long term, the Aachen production scientists, headed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christian Brecher, also seek to carry out interdisciplinary investigations into a new, detailed understanding of the interrelationships in product, process and production technology. Now, the second funding phase of the Cluster of Excellence “Integrative Production Technology for High-Wage Countries” represents an outstanding opportunity for cooperating with numerous institutions of RWTH Aachen University. Even once the funding period has ended, the interdisciplinary cooperation will be successfully continued, such as in the newly founded Aachen Centre for Integrative Lightweight Design (AZL).

He is a pioneer of science: Prof. Dr.rer.nat. Dieter Enders, Head of the Chair of Organic Chemistry I, conducts research in the fields of asymmetric synthesis and organocatalysis. The relatively new research field of organocatalysis has been devel-oped for the past few years at an international level. Alongside the biocatalysts and metal catalysts used in chemical systems until now, small organic mol-ecules are employed here as catalysts.Asymmetric organodomino catalysis is currently central to Enders’ work. The synthesis method is considered to be very environmentally friendly and cost-effective. It saves time, since several steps take place one after another in a controlled manner in the reaction flask – just like falling domino stones.

The connection between humans and technology is one of the great social tasks of the 21st century. The multiplicity of electronic devices requires new kinds of user interfaces and operating concepts, especially against the background of an increasingly aging and culturally diverse society. The research focus of Prof. Dr.phil. Martina Ziefle, who is Chair of Communication Science, is the handling of new, mobile technologies and their user-centred applica-tion in the interaction and communication between humans and technology. Interfaces that are tailored to the needs of the target group are unique selling propositions and success factors that ensure future industrial production in high-wage countries. The prerequisite for this is an intelligent combination of basic and application-oriented research. Ziefle is one of the founding directors of the Human-Computer Interaction Center (HCIC) at RWTH Aachen. The centre brings together an interdisciplinary group that examines the integrative requirements of human-friendly technology. Current projects are dealing with the acceptance of renewable energies, naviga-tion in buildings by means of mobile technologies, and shaping the quality of life in urban quarters.

„Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” (IfU). “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” The question, which was raised by the American author Philip Dick as early as 1968, touches on a crucial aspect in the de-velopment of autonomous “intelligent” systems and thereby also on universal scien-tific and engineering questions, while simultaneously relating to questions from fields such as linguistics, psychology, cognitive science and philosophy. The question of ar-tificial intelligence and its consequences is also the subject of Prof. Dr.rer.nat. Sabina Jeschke’s research. Since 2009, she has been running the interdisciplinary institute cluster IMA/ZLW & IfU at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. The cluster consists of the Chair of Information Management in Mechanical Engineering (IMA), the Cen-tre for Learning and Knowledge Management (ZLW), and the Associated Institute for Management Cybernetics (IfU). Following, in particular, the research methodology of cybernetics, the institute cluster addresses issues ranging from basic to industry-oriented research. Jeschke is Vice Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

Neue Sektion JARA-FAME

New section JARA-FAME

In August 2012, JARA expanded to include a further section: In JARA-FAME, joint basic physics research is carried out to explain matter, antimatter, the asymmetry in the universe and, thereby, the existence of us all. The founding members from RWTH are internationally renowned; in the context of large external experiments, such as the “Compact Muon Solenoid Particle Detector” (CMS) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in CERN, they deal with questions in particle and astro-particle phys-ics. At Forschungszentrum Jülich, in the research area concerned with the structure of matter, the focus is on the physics of hadrons and nuclei. To this end, basic meas-urements are carried out with COSY (Cooler Synchrotron) at the Jülich Institute for Nuclear Physics. Currently JARA is seeking to intensify its strategic partnerships.

JARA-FAME currently consists of two pillars:

1. The new JEDI project (Jülich Electric Dipole Moment Investigation) will be planned and implemented under the leadership of the two JARA partners.

2. Its second pillar is the AMS experiment currently conducted on the International Space Station (ISS), in which Aachen is already actively involved. As part of JARA, the Jülich researchers will play a leading role in strengthening AMS and linking it to the PANDA experiment (Anti-Proton Annihilation at Darmstadt) at FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research).

First JARA Academy and senior professorship

In a modular programme, the new JARA Academy provides detailed knowledge of the national and European science system. The focus is on the structure and man-agement of universities and major research institutions. From May to September

2012, the first JARA Academy took place with 14 department heads, faculty heads and team leaders from RWTH Aachen University and Forschungszentrum Jülich. The goal was to inform the employees about the structure and workings of the two institutions, promote cooperation and impart methodical expertise for science management. In this way, the educational and research institutions undertake joint human resources development activities under the umbrella of JARA.

2012 also saw Prof. Dr. Knut Urban appointed as the first JARA senior profes-sor. This distinction was awarded to the retired director of the Ernst Ruska Centre for Microscopy and Spectroscopy with Electrons during the event called “RWTH transparent”. Rector Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ernst Schmachtenberg and the Chairman of the Board of Forschungszentrum Jülich, Prof. Dr. Achim Bachem, presented the certifi-cate of appointment. The JARA senior professorship is intended to enable outstand-ing scientists to continue their research after retirement and to exchange ideas with younger colleagues.

Herausragende wissenschaftlich-technische Infrastruktur

Outstanding scientific and technical infrastructure

JARA can draw on an outstanding scientific and technical infrastructure: for example, in February 2012 a unique electron microscope was inaugurated at the Ernst Ruska-Centre on the premises of Forschungszentrum Jülich. The device, called “PICO,” can achieve a record resolution of 50 billionths of a millimetre. With it, users from science and industry can examine atomic structures with the highest precision. The funding of approximately 15 million Euros for PICO, as well as for an additional device and a new building, was provided by the German federal government, the Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia, the German Research Foundation (DFG), and the Helmholtz Association.

The new Jülich supercomputer “JUQUEEN” gained fifth place in the TOP500 List, an overview of supercomputers worldwide, published in November 2012. With a computing power of over five petaflops – which is equivalent to five quadrillion computer operations per second – the first top supercomputer in Europe makes computationally intensive large-scale projects possible. With 393,216 cores in 24 racks, the system achieves a maximum computing power of 5,033 petaflops, which is roughly equivalent to the power of 100,000 modern personal computers. At the beginning of 2013, a further increase to 28 racks is planned. JUQUEEN contains a BlueGene/Q system from IBM. With about two gigaflops per watt, supercomputers of this type are among the most energy-efficient supercomputers in the world. The energy efficiency is five times better than that of its forerunner “JUGENE”.

Supercomputer in the European network

Extensive calculations from the field of elementary particle physics and on phase transitions in data storage materials have already been run on JUQUEEN. Moreover, brain researchers from JARA-BRAIN used the new system to simulate the activity in brain structures. In addition to this, JUQUEEN promises new opportunities for the Human Brain Project, whose main goal is to simulate the human brain. The project is one of six that applied for funding of up to a billion Euros in the final selection of the European FET Flagship Programme in 2012.

The new Jülich supercomputer is available to scientists and researchers from all over Europe. Two thirds of the computing time are assigned through two supercomputing networks: via the Gauss Centre for Supercomputing (GCS), an amalgamation of the three national supercomputer centres in Jülich, Garching and Stuttgart, and via the Eu-ropean research infrastructure PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe). An additional third is available to users from Forschungszentrum Jülich and JARA.

A milestone was reached last year in the field of teaching. For the winter semester of 2011/12, the teacher training courses made the transition to the Bachelor/Master system. The changeover of all Diplom, Magister, and teacher training courses at RWTH Aachen University to the tiered structure in accordance with the Bologna reform is thus implemented.

In the winter semester of 2012/13, the number of students shot up to a record level of 37,917. RWTH is thereby contributing a further slice of social responsibility – with the interest in studying growing among young people nationally, it offers an outstanding education. This requires provisions to be made in many areas: more than 400 new positions are being created, including 18 professorships. The University is establishing an increased number of co-professorships and is making use of the deferred retirement age. With the Professor-Pirlet-Straße and Claßenstraße lecture hall centres, RWTH is gaining around 4,300 new spaces for lectures and around 640 seminar spaces. Numerous additional building projects are being carried out, new study areas created, new lab rooms set up in the natural sciences and renovations carried out in the faculties and the central facilities.

Achieving higher graduation rates

In the advisory and support services, more emphasis is placed on prospective students and students in their first two years of study. For example, lecturers from scientific subjects are meeting regularly with partners in schools. They exchange information about the knowledge and skills of first-year students, who will, in the future, be a year younger than previously. Furthermore, with the high level of in-terconnectedness of the many courses, optimised teaching and examination plan-ning is essential. To this end, a team at the Chair of Operations Research is developing a software application that will be used for optimising planning as of the winter semester of 2013/14.

Tightened studying schedules, the resulting heavy workload and the high density of exams are a great challenge for the University and students alike. In 2012, numerous quality improvement projects were implemented so as to guarantee good condi-tions for studying. To this end, funds from the Excellent Teaching competition and the Teaching Quality Pact were used. The goal is to continue providing high-quality teaching and for at least 75 per cent of those beginning their first year – and to whom taking up studies was recommended – to be brought to graduation.

In 2012, the last courses made the transition to the Bachelor/Master system. Furthermore, in the winter semester of 2012/13, the number of students rose to 37,917. This means the historic peak of the year 1991 was exceeded by 641 students. RWTH is making provisions for this: with an increased staff, new buildings for teaching, and innovative teaching structures.

Page 84: Geschäftsbericht 2012 - Report 2012

84

85

Communication with faculties and their student bodies

In order for each subject to be able to optimise its courses, they are regularly given information on potentials to improve their teaching. This is carried out in develop-ment meetings at many levels: for example, student and course analyses take place in annual evaluation meetings of the Vice-Rector for Teaching with faculty manage-ment. Based on these deliberations, the faculties agree on goals that they set for themselves and on supportive measures to achieve them. For the first time in the winter semester of 2011/12, there was a close communication with the faculties’ student representative bodies.

To prepare for these meetings, the faculties can draw on a variety of data: on statistics about the courses, graduation rates, credit points achieved, pass rates and transfer rates in the Bachelor’s/Master’s programmes. To supplement this, informa-tive survey data on the workload, the evaluation of university courses and gradu-ates’ opinions are available. This data also forms part of the accreditation and intra-university evaluation process.

Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft reviewed RWTH’s implementation measures in the “Excellent Teaching” competition, with a particular focus on their sustainability and effectiveness. The students who had been involved in developing the concept and who are actively contributing to its implementation were also available to be interviewed by the reviewers.

Page 86: Geschäftsbericht 2012 - Report 2012

86

The launch of the new lecture hall building in Professor-Pirlet-Straße – PPS for short – has great significance for RWTH in coping

with the double cohort of secondary school graduates. The building houses two lecture

halls with around 700 seats, a seminar room for 80 people, and the largest university

computer lab nationally with over 300 workstations.

Page 87: Geschäftsbericht 2012 - Report 2012

87

Evaluation supplements accreditation

Alongside the comprehensive initial and renewed accreditation of the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes by external agencies, as prescribed by the Higher Educa-tion Act of North Rhine-Westphalia, RWTH also carries out comprehensive internal evaluation procedures. With this instrument, it systematically analyses the strengths and weaknesses of teaching modules in order to make teaching and learning more transparent and to structure the course schedules and the examination process as well as possible.

To adapt the course contents according to the objectives of the Bologna process, the Faculty of Arts and Humanities changed their degree programmes from a two-sub-ject to a one-subject structure. In the winter semester of 2012/13, the one-subject Bachelor’s programmes “Social Sciences” and “Language and Literary Studies” were launched. Corresponding Master’s programmes are currently being designed.

Since the winter semester of 2011/12, a personal mentoring system across the board provides students with support during their studies. The focus is on students who are taking significantly longer than usual and on those with above-average tal-ent. The offer of getting in touch with a mentor is basically open to everyone, how-ever. The mentoring system is also subject to ongoing evaluation. By implementing this system, the faculties and the central office will, in the future, get direct insights into the real experience of the students and thus can adapt the conditions of study-ing to their needs.

Talking about good teaching

On 4 July 2012, the University’s internal “Talk Lehre” (Talk Teaching) took place for the second time – the topic was new media in teaching and learning. The event was launched in 2011 at the request of the teaching staff and the student representatives. It annually provides information on the implementation of the Excellent Teaching strategy and promotes dialogue about teaching-related contents on a wider platform.

After three years, the Excellent Teaching competition by Stifterverband and the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs has come to an end. During the closing celebrations in May, 90 members of the University gave account to the evaluation committee. On site at the University, the experts were satisfied by the implementation of the measures proposed in the competition.

A mentoring system supports RWTH students during their studies by providing systematic advice in a one-to-one context. This is aimed at recognising their potential and detecting possible problems at an early stage.
