Content

Infotainment is booming: „Discove-ry Channel“,„GEO“, „Galileo“, „P.M.“, „Planetopia“,„Bild der Wissenschaft“, „K1 Abenteuer Leben“, „Spektrum“, „N�4 Wis-sen“, „W wie Wissen“, „Planet Wissen“, National Geographic“ and and and. But not enough: Classical Formats like for example „Fakt“, „Der Spiegel“, „Focus“ but also newspapers satisfy their readers hunger for knowledge with a more and more enter-taining form of abstract and complex sub-jects. Already in 1994 todays Chief-Editor of the magazine „Focus“ ment: „Our graphic designers are editors.“What are the content and formal features of a good infotainment publication?How could the concept and the sketch of a innovativ, interesting and ambitious „for-mat“ look like?To find out, we take a look at the world, to specify: Latinamerica. Over the last years medias who combine knowledge with entertainment have established and get produced in mass circualtion over the whole subcontinent.Alejandro Zarate, the art-director of the mexican magazines „Quo“ and „Chilango“, will be our guest to tell us about his work and to assist the first part of our development work for the fitctious maga-zine „About:“.

Learning target

The genre of infotaiment media should be contemplated and decoded in it‘s charakte-ristic featers. These basics should be as-signable for the concrete project requests and for later professional tasks (web, corporate design etc). The focus is on the creativ development process, but the process of the production should also in-troduce. The field of creativ working will be liveliy initiated through Alejandro Za-rates contribution. The examination with the latinamerican enviroment will ensure new approaches.

The project

Process

First the field of infotainment will be analysed to derive the elementary require-ments. Followed by the identification of the areas of operation such as brand, layout, typography, photography, graphic design and the worksharing through the working team. The aim is to develope a prototype of the magazine „About:“. The first part of the course will be in english.

An analytical comparison between aninfotainment and a completely different magazine

ZEIT WISSENInfotainment magazine about the following four categories: life, science, health and technics

What is the audience?

General, no specific age, interest in a general knowledge

What visual language is appealing the au-dience?

clear structured layout, easy to read ty-pography, a steady and clean appearance

Structure of content?

Four main categories, divided into smal-ler articles starting with a portal-like page followed by the bigger features. Each starts with a large bleeding picture fol-lowed by mixed pages (text/pictures).

About: TravellingA magazine made on the road for in-dependent travellers.

Trough our magazine we want to express the feeling of being on the road, the spon-tanity and the independen-cy. Sharing the personal ex-perience of travellers and their discoveries of hid-den places off the tourist tracks is our highest goal.

The language of our maga-zine is english, because it‘s sold internationally at backpackers places, se-lected travel agencies, se-lected bookshops and cafés.

Editorial concept:

Every issue is dedicated to one single country.

All contributions are sent in by people travelling or living in the issue‘s coun-try.

The quality standart is de-fined by the first issue. The sent in material will be analysed by the editors. The author will get paid a litt-le amount, whicht can cover some of his or her travel expenses.

Typography Our articles are all sent in by travellers on different mediums. This fact is an ex-pression of the dynamic of how you communi-cate when you‘re on the road. So we wanted to transmit this feeling to our readers by indicating the origin of the text. Every me-dium has it‘s own specific features.
