You will find your dictionary very useful as you learn French.The most important thing to know about a French/English dictionary is that it has two sections – a section with English words arranged in alphabetical order with their French translations, and a section with French words arranged in alphabetical order next to their English translations.

Check you know which side of your dictionary is which!

Imagine that you want to find out what the French word étagère means, as you’ve seen it on a worksheet about household objects. You’ve tried to guess it by looking at the context and by seeing if it’s like any English words or other French words that you know, but you can’t work it out, so you decide to look it up in your dictionary.

You find it (in the French side, of course!), and the entry looks something like this:

étagère [ ] nf -1. [rayon] shelf. -2. [meuble] shelves (pl), set of shelves.

Easy! So now you know the meaning (shelf / shelves) but you also know some other things about the word. Do you know what?

You know roughly how to pronounce the word (for help with the phonetic alphabet, look in the front of your dictionary).

You know whether the word is masculine or feminine. Which is it?

You know that it can have two slightly different meanings. What are they?

You must look carefully at the context. This means looking at the other words around the word you are looking up (and any pictures), to find clues about what the text is about, and therefore what the word is most likely to mean.

For example, the verb voler can mean to fly or to steal. Look at the two contexts below. Even without a dictionary, you should be able to work out where voler means to fly and where it means to steal!Les avions Air France volent trois fois par jour de l’aéroport Charles de Gaulle à Stanstead, près de Londres.

Of course it won’t always be so easy, but looking at the context is often very helpful.

What if you look up a word and find that it has two different meanings? How can you tell which meaning you need?

Finding the right French word can be much harder, and you often need to think about your grammar if you want to choose correctly.

This knowledge will help you when you have to choose from more than one French word.For example, You want to say I love snakes in French, but you have forgotten how to say love. You look it up and find the entry looks something like this:

If you are looking for a verb, you must remember that it will always be in the infinitive form (often ending in –er) and you must change it to the correct form in order to use it in a sentence.

Using the same example, if you wanted to say I love snakes in French, and had forgotten how to say love, you would find the verb (vt / vi) entry, and it would probably look something like this:

Regular –er verbs

The present tense is used to talk about what is happening now or, in general terms, what happens every day.

Example:

Je regarde la télé. I watch TV.J’ai un frère. I have one brother.Je suis écossais. I am Scottish.

The first example can be translated not just as “I watch TV”, but also as “I’m watching TV”. In English we have different forms of the present tense but French is less complicated - there is just one!

Regular –er verbs

You have already learnt some French verbs in the present tense. Can you remember which ones?

The verbs which you have learnt so far (like avoir and être) are probably irregular. This means that they don’t follow a set pattern and their endings have to be learnt very carefully.

Luckily, not all verbs are like this. Some verbs, called regular verbs, follow a set pattern. This means that if you learn the endings for one verb, you will be able to use the same endings on all the other verbs that belong to the same group.

The biggest group of regular verbs are those whose infinitive ends in – er. We call these regular –er verbs!

Here is the whole of the verb regarder. It means ‘to watch’ in English, and it is an example of a regular – er verb.
