FROM THE PRESIDENT _______________ I was doing a pretty good job of fighting off the winter blues. That is until the week after the blizzard of 2011 - a massive storm that produced nearly two feet of snow in the northern parts of the state as well as very heavy ice in the south with widespread power outages. When I started to write this message the topics of spring training (the Cardinals first game is February 28), spring shows (just about a month away), and spring sales get going in earnest in March. If you get a chance, make sure to attend one of our member sponsored club sales. Some of the top animals and very best pedigrees will be available. No matter if you’re looking for a fancy show calf, good young milk cow, or a cutting edge GTPI animal these sales will not disappoint. From these thoughts, I look forward also to spring planting and putting up first crop hay. If I haven’t spread the spring fever bug by now I’m sure the first 60-degree day will do the job, which we already had in late February! Moving on, our industry faces never ending challenges including market volatility and ever increasing cost of production. However the milk price forecast has improved of late and if you have grain to sell that market will also help. Good luck to everyone and keep your spirits up and stay focused.

What is a Little Miss Holstein? Every little girl wants to be a Prin-cess and this is fun. The first ever Little Miss Holstein Contest was held on Wednesday, July 21, 2010 in conjunction with the Illinois Holstein Dutchess Contest. This past year’s contest featured two delightful young girls, Emily Sheehan and Renee Probst. Emily Sheehan is the daughter of John and Crystal Sheehan of Hunt-ley, IL. Emily is a 4th grader this year. She loves to lead cows and ex-hibit at fairs. Emily was the first place mini-showmanship winner at the Northwest District Holstein Show this past summer and has won many show ribbons. She is a McHenry County 4-H member. Emily partici-pates in Sunday School, Awanas and bell choir and she is a soccer player and enthusiast. Renee Probst is the daughter of Toby and Margie Probst of Wheeler, IL. Renee is a third grader this year. She loves animals, being outside and tumbling. Renee loves to show. This past year she couldn’t wait for the March calves to be born so that she could pick her calf to show in 4-H and at the district show. Renee is also very involved in tumbling and qualified for Nationals last year. She loves to spend time with her family, talk, swim, read and play with friends. Don’t you have a little princess in your family? The contest is open to all girls aged 6-10 and will be held this year on Wednesday July 20. A short appli-cation is required for participation and full contest rules will be printed in the June Herald. For additional informa-tion please contact Lori Lyons at 815-988-7102 or [email protected].

DUTCHESS DOMAIN & LITTLE MISS HOLSTEIN __Hello everyone! Spring is right around the corner, which means farming season is coming up and all those show cattle are going to need grooming soon. After spring, our annual Dutchess Contest comes around again! I cannot believe it has been almost an entire year that I have been the Illinois Holstein Dutchess. This year has been a whirlwind of activities for me. I have attended sales, banquets, and of course, fairs. Last year, the numbers for the contest were very low and it would be great to have more young ladies compete for this awesome title. So junior ladies, listen up! The Dutchess Contest takes place the day before the State Show in Bloomington, along with the Little Miss Holstein Contest. Each participant is asked to give a 3-5 minute speech to the panel of judges. They are then asked three questions from the judges and given as much time as they would like to answer. After the questions, a personal interview is given to let the judges get to know you. Last year after the contest we had refreshments. Yum, cookies and milk! The next morning the winner was announced and started her duties that day! I realize that this is very brief with only a few details. However, I have been keeping a short journal of my experiences and would love to share them with any possible contestants for the upcoming year. My e-mail address is [email protected] and I would be happy to share any particulars about the contest, like what to write about or what to wear, or the duties of the Dutchess, like what events to attend and how they are ran. Hope to see you all there!

As of February 1, 2011, a change has been made to the way Stature is evaluated in Holstein Association USA’s Classification program. A recommendation was made by the Type Advisory Committee (TAC) and approved by the board of directors in November 2010, that any cow falling outside of what is considered to be within the breed standard height of between 56 and 62 inches tall (as measured at the spine, between the hips) will be deducted two points from the Front End/Capacity category. This equates to a deduction of 0.4 points from a cow’s final score. As is standard policy, cows that are evaluated at less than two years of age will have their stature score age-adjusted. As an example, a cow scoring 87 for Front/End Capacity would only receive a score of 85 for that breakdown if she was shorter than 56 inches or taller than 62 inches, as measured at the spine, between her hips. “Statistics show that the Holstein breed is getting taller, and we’re seeing where it’s causing dairymen to have to remodel the stalls in their tiestall and freestall barns to accommodate larger cows,” states John Connor, Holstein

Association USA Director of Type Evaluation. “Very few cows will lose points as a result of them being too tall or small, but the TAC felt it was their duty, as an Association representing Holstein breeders across the country, to put this new policy into place.” Stature is the most heritable type trait measured by Holstein Association USA, at 0.42. Continual selection for stature in the population will bring about a phenotypic response that can easily be measured. For example, the average STA for Stature of the Available Bull Population in February 2006 was 0.74 (Tall); in December 2010, the average STA Stature of the Available Bull Population was 1.33 (Tall). When the January 2010 base change is added to that (+0.70), the real change in STA Stature is +1.29. On a linear scale, this equates to a significant change of +2.33 linear points (or about half an inch in stature) in less than five years. “The message that this change sends is that we do not want the Holstein breed to continually progress in a direction that will result in extremely tall cows that must be

housed and managed specially and differently from the majority of the herd, just to be able to keep them in the herd,” added Connor. As an Association, it is important to consider the future of the Holstein breed, the direction that the U.S. Holstein population is headed, and how that relates to the U.S. Registered Holstein being the breed of choice for dairy producers worldwide, now and into the future. Classifiers are asked to communicate this new policy at all herds they evaluate cattle for, even in cases where cows are unaffected. With questions, contact the Classification department at 800.952.5200, ext. 4263.

Bettylou’s story started 30 years ago with 4EX and 3 VG daughters. She has provided us with All American nominees, AI and Embryo contracts, GMDs, DOMs and opportunities to market animals in all arenas. Trends have come and gone, but the demand for offspring from the Betty family has never wavered. Currently 1/3 of our herd traces back to Bettylou. We have developed over 25 EX and 35 VG Betty’s with many more in barns around the globe. We’ll let the pictures tell the rest of her story. A snapshot of Betty’s we have worked with.

MIDWEST HOLSTEINS, Spring 2011 - 5

The University of

WISCONSINMADISON

Dairy ScienceSTUDENT PROFILE

Why did you decide to attend UW-Madison? I wanted to take advantageof the opportunities that a large school can offer a student. Getting out of mysmall hometown and meeting new people was also what helped me decidethat the UW was the school for me.What has been your most memorable college experience? Badger football game day has always been a good time with friends that I will neverforget and I look forward to returning as an alumni. What has been your favorite course? My favorite course has been DairyScience 375 with Dr. Wiltbank. This class has given me the opportunity topractice basic dairy cow reproductive practices. I was also able to learn thescience behind today’s reproductive protocols and learn how to use them tomaximize a dairy’s potential. What are your future career goals? My dream is to become a large animalveterinarian and practice here in Wisconsin. I want to specialize in dairy cowreproduction and maybe someday own my own embryo transfer business.

Poly-Kow Mailing is an excellent example of the type of bulls we use in our breeding program, and we continue to use him. All three ofthese cows come from generations of homebred success. Solid bulls, with solid type, produce cows that work and last for us. We’ve exploredmany different options, but feel good old “cow sense” and “common sense” are the best way to decide matings and breed cows.

We currently have a few bulls available, born September 2010. We have two in service at the Dale & Jake Roth farm in Eland andJake says they’re built right, look good and getting the job done! Call or email for more information and pedigrees.

not change. Matings will be determined with that goal in mind.

FROM THE BOARD

After a long, challenging winter, the promise of spring certainly is welcome. I hope no cows slipped on the ice, no frostbitten teats and no other ailments occurred on your farm. Holstein USA finished 2010 in strong

financial shape with increases in many business areas while reducing expenses. It has been a tough year for feed and milk prices and we are fortunate to have a solid year with your organization. Hopefully, 2011 will see profitable conditions on the dairy. Recently, the Holstein USA Board of Directors voted to change the TPI formula. See the sidebar for more information. Also, USDA will rescale Non-Genomic animals with the April 2011 run to get all animals on a similar genetic base. If you have questions, feel free to call me and I will help you find an answer. Holstein USA continues to stay involved in the policy development process to give

dairymen a voice. We support the Dairy Price Stabilization Program and will work to get it as part of whatever policy is developed. Also, classification fees are changing this spring but the good news is there is no increase for those on Complete. If you are not on complete contact your field rep to get signed up-it might save you money. I look forward to the spring sales and how animals will sell. With extremely strong cull cow prices, it would make sense to sell a couple of marginal cows and invest in a good pedigreed Registered Holstein. I look forward to visiting with you.

NEW TPI FORMULA TO BE INTRODUCED IN APRIL 2011 Following a recent vote by the Holstein Association USA, Inc. board of directors, a new Total Performance Index (TPI) will be implemented with the April 2011 national genetic evaluations. Discussions regarding the TPI formula were re-opened following a resolution brought forth at the 2010 Holstein Association USA Annual Meeting in Bloomington, Minn. The resolution, submitted by the Wisconsin Holstein Association and affirmed by the delegates, asked the board of directors to “re-evaluate the TPI formula and raise the type contribution to a level that more accurately reflects what breeders desire for a balance of type and production.” The TPI formula was last amended in January 2010. In summary, the April 2011 TPI formula removes 5 percent weighting from Productive Life (PL), and adds a 1 percent emphasis to PTA Protein (PTAP), 2 percent to Udder Composite (UDC), 1 percent to Feet and Leg Composite (FLC) and 1 percent to Daughter Pregnancy Rate (DPR). The complete formula appears below:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New Holstein Total Performance Index (TPI)SM to be Introduced in April 2011Brattleboro, Vt. (February 16, 2011)…Following a recent vote by the Holstein Association USA, Inc. board of directors, a new Total Performance Index (TPI) will be implemented with the April 2011 national genetic evaluations.

Major Weightings of the April 2011 TPI Formula

When looking at the weight of major categories in the formula, the emphasis has shifted slightly:Production 43% (+1% from January 2010 TPI formula)Health & Fertility 29% (-4%)Conformation 28% (+3%)

Analysis of the Formula Changes on Top 100 TPI Bull Averages

The table below compares the averages of the top 100 TPI bulls (having at least 85 percent reliability to qualify for the Top 100 list), comparing the new April 2011 TPI formula, the previous TPI formula (January 2010), and also the Net Merit (NM$) formula. As the table illustrates, the April 2011 formula results in higher averages for all type traits, addressing the issues raised by the delegate resolution. It also shows slight increases in the averages of all production traits. The new TPI formula places significantly more emphasis on type traits than the Net Merit $ formula, results in a higher average for PTA Milk, comparable averages for pounds of fat and protein, and slightly lower averages for the health traits.

More Rescaling Also Coming in April from USDAThe other change that will happen in April 2011 is that non-genomic cows will be put on a "level playing field" with animals that do have genomic evaluations, by having their genetic values rescaled by USDA. This process was done to animals with genomic evaluations in April 2010. Holstein Association USA will provide more information for the membership as it becomes available from USDA in the coming weeks.

Denmark, Wis. – National Dairy Shrine is again seeking nominations for its most prestigious awards: Guest of Honor, Pioneer, Distinguished Dairy Cattle Breeder, Progressive Dairy Producer, and Graduate Production Award. The Guest of Honor is given to a contemporary dairy leader for outstanding accomplishments and contributions to the dairy industry. It has been awarded every year since 1949 when Dean H. Kildee was named the first Guest of Honor. Each year, three to four living or deceased Pioneers of the dairy industry are honored by National Dairy Shrine for their service and leadership in the dairy industry. Meanwhile, the Distinguished Dairy Cattle Breeder is an award which recognizes active, progressive dairy producers who, through their expertise in managing a dairy breeding herd based upon sound genetics and business principles, serve as a model of success for fellow breeders throughout the country. All these award winners’ accomplishments are on permanent display in the Dairy Hall of Fame at the National Dairy Shrine Museum in Fort Atkinson, Wis. One of National Dairy Shrine’s newer

awards, the Progressive Dairy Producer Award, is given to producers ages 21 to 45 who have introduced and applied effective management and business practices that help achieve more profitable dairy businesses. Two $2,000 awards for education and travel are given annually, one for herd sizes with 300 milk cows or less and a second for herds with over 300 milk cows. The Graduate Dairy Production Award recognizes and assists qualified two-year and four-year agricultural college graduates efforts to pursue a career in commercial dairy farming and to gain ownership of dairy cattle with the intent of growing their dairy herd. The applicant must be employed in a herd management role on a commercial dairy when completing the award application. The winner will receive a $2,500 award from National Dairy Shrine. Nominations or applications must be submitted on official forms by March 15, 2011. If you know someone who should be nominated for these awards, please visit the NDS website at www.dairyshrine.org and click on “Adult Awards” to view a complete listing of each award form. Then you can download the application for the respective award desired. You can also request an application

for the respective award via e-mail at [email protected] or by mail at PO Box 725, Denmark, WI. 54208.
