ISLAYSCHWARZ WEISSBLACK & WHITESTEPHAN LAUTH

Will man Islay beschreiben muss man sich Zeit nehmen.

Capture all of these elements was my goal. However, this book presents no documentary claim. It should convey the essence of the island in an artistic way.

On display are 41 fine art prints in black and white, taken in the years 2007 to 2009.

Über Allem ein Himmel der d i e s e m S z e n a r i o d e n passenden Rahmen gibt. Schnell wechselnd, sodass es nie langweilig wird.

From any point on the island, the sea is not far away. Especially on the Atlantic side you can hear it too, even if a hill blocks the view. Thousands of opportunities to marvel when sea meets land. Above that you will find a sky as an ideal setting for this scenario. Quick changes included, so it never gets boring.

Spacious sandy beaches invite for long walks. Most of the time you are alone, just the wind is a constant companion. With some light rain, you will become a part of the elements.

The senses are enhanced by the smells of land and sea. When inhaled you will feel a slight salty taste and you will quickly become addicted to it. Take a deep breath, enjoy the view, then close your eyes and enjoy the silence for a moment. Go ahead with the anticipation of a wee dram of a local single malt - or at best take it along with a flask and enjoy locally.

TIME

Welcome to Islay time, which is the same as elsewhere, yet different. You can‘t waste it, it‘s just there, take it for a cup of tea, a walk at the beach, listen to the wind, join a dram in the dunes and watch a stunning sunset ... or stay around your cottage and turn down and open your mind for simple things. Let guide you by the Isle which has a song in it‘s heart and whisky in it‘s soul, No matter how beautiful a place is, in the end it‘s the people there and their way of living who makes you fall in love with that part of the world. May it be their friendliness, their open-mindness or just the way they happily ignore the hectic ruling of our modern life.

On Islay, one cannot avoid finding these pleaseant qualities in most of the people. Be astonished how involved the Illeach‘s are with there island and culture and you will admire their various jobs, capabilities and hobbies. So welcome the Islay time and watch out your time on Islay and enjoy my pictures of those elements.

LICHT

Light is the icing on the cake for the photographer. Without good lighting, there are no good pictures. A plenty of this exists on Islay. It stays never long as the light is adapted to the rapidly changing weather situations. Here it means simply bring patience to it and it will come.

Do not quarrel with the light. Wait half an hour and you'll see that it changes. Then it is time for the next or a better recording. And if it does not want to be - does not matter, Tomorrow is a new day according the rule of time on Islay.

WASSER

Of course, for an island water is nothing special, it is finally surrounded by it. But for an island such as Islay, exposed to the whims of the North Atlantic and the gifts of the Gulf Stream, the water is still something essential.

On Islay you can be literally get wet from all directions. Due to the spray of the sea on rough as well as on a calm days, whether on a boat tour or take a walk on one of the many beaches. Due to a sudden rain w h i c h c e r t a i n l y c a n s p re a d horizontally by the wind into your face. Or you get wet feet because your walking shoes soaked the wet out of the dripping peaty wet soil.

If you want to stay dry on Islay, so you have to prepare yourself to these quirks of nature. The forms of the element water are never the same and it never gets boring.

20

MOMENTE

There are those moments of interaction of light and water, the smell of the sea and the sounds of nature, if it‘s from the wind, the sea, or from birds that makes you to persuade them to contemplation and just be amazed and grateful.

Whether it be flushed driftwood, perhaps from very far away, or flying up a rare kind of crows to an almost 200 years old church ruins might be one of those moments.

A place is a particular portion of space, whether of definite or indefinite extent. As far as the definition of a dictionary. Such are many places on the island. Which of them are particularly must each decide for yourself. It can be a special event, a village, a lonely cottage, a history-prone ruin or even just a lonely phone booth in the middle of nowhere.

Bowmore is the main town of the island. The town was founded in 1768 and has a striking main road that runs from the coast through the town and at the end of the Kilarrow Parish Church is located.

Port Charlotte is located in the Rhinns of Islay, southwest part of the island on the western shore of Loch Indaal. The village was founded in 1828 by Walter Frederick Campbell and named after his mother.

26

The Living on Islay can be at first glance quite lonely. But even to the farthest house there is always a neighbor, even if you do not see him at the view from the window.

27

Öffentliche Telefonzelle an der B8018, Wegkreuzung Richtung Saligo Bay

Public telephone booth on the B8018, crossroads direction Saligo Bay

A wireless connection is not the case in many parts of the island. However, this public way of communicating is a rarity. There are only two public phones, outside towns, in far flung places on the island.

28

Chr. Wie hier die K i l d a l t o n K i r c h e a u s d e r Z e i t d e r Christianisierung 500 - 1000 Jahre n. Chr.

Islay has an over 6000-year history beginning with the first settlement in the Neolithic period 4000 BC. As here the Kildalton church from the time of Christianity 500 - 1000 AD.

Although the island is fairly well populated compared to others, approximately 3,500 inhabitants compared to more than 30,000 sheep. Add other quadrupeds such as cattle and a large population of deer as one can imagine, whom you met mostly on a hike.

So I do not put the people on here, but the animal population which have, whether wild or domesticated, adapted to the harsh living conditions.

Islay is home to many species of birds. In addition to rare species such as chough, hen harrier and eagle inhabit in winter to 50,000 geese from Greenland the island. The cackling of geese can be heard up to the last corner.

There are few fences, so some caution is appropriate in dealing with each other. As with the residents on the next page.
