Extreme Networks has changed the industry by creating

ExtremeXOS – a highly available and extensible software

foundation for converged networks. ExtremeXOS raises

the bar for availability, which is critical when offering carrier-

grade voice and video services over IP and for supporting

mission-critical business applications such as CRM. A

more available network can also lower operational costs by

drastically reducing emergency maintenance. ExtremeXOS

allows you to extend the capabilities of your network

via dynamic loading of applications, XML APIs and CLI scripting.

It allows you to integrate specialized application appliances such

as security and VoIP monitoring devices into your network

via XML, as well automatically confi guring edge ports for

security and VoIP using its Universal Port event based

activation of scripts.

ExtremeXOS has a rich set of Layer 2 and Layer 3 control

protocols, provides fl exibility on the design of highly resilient

networks and has been designed from the ground up to

support the next-generation Internet Protocol, IPv6. Even if

you are not planning to use IPv6 immediately, ExtremeXOS can

help secure the network using IPv6 Access Control Lists and

help provide investment protection for your network. Security

capabilities provide network access control integrated

with end point integrity checking, and network control

and management plane protection. ExtremeXOS has been

deployed in production networks since 2003.

• It’s a High Availability Architecture: The high availability of

ExtremeXOS creates a resilient infrastructure capable of maximum

network integrity for mission-critical applications. Different from the

traditional Monolithic Operating Systems, ExtremeXOS solves the last

single point of failure, i.e. the Operating System. If a management process

fails in ExtremeXOS, this process can be stopped, re-started or replaced

while the switch is still in operation. Whereas Monolithic OS’s require a

reboot resulting in a typical outage of 3-5 minutes.

• It’s an easy to manage architecture: Universal Port dramatically

simplifi es rollout of VoIP via auto-confi guration of edge ports and

phones.

• It’s an open architecture: There are endless possibilities for further

expanding the capabilities of the network, by integrating third-party

applications. An example of this is the VoIP application layer monitoring

agent developed by Avaya to simulate and closely monitor the

behaviour

of VoIP connections in a network.

• It’s a secure architecture: Security of the entire network

infrastructure is protected with ExtremeXOS. For Example manage-

ment traffi c is secured through authentication and encryption. In

addition access control works with or without dedicated authentication

support on client devices, such as VoIP phones.

Ethernet Automatic Protection Switching (EAPS) is Extreme Networks’ solution for fault-tolerant network topologies. EAPS

is a feature of ExtremeXOS and is responsible for sub 50 millisecond network recovery. This revolutionary technology

provides end users with a seamless experience when network failure does occur and does so with radical simplicity.

Why do converged networks need

an easy to manage architecture?

In order to realise many of the benefi ts of a converged

network, IT managers have been looking for ways

to simplify and in some cases automate the deploy-

ment of VoIP endpoints such as laptops with soft

phones, WiFi base stations and IP Handsets.

What was needed was the ability for the port on

a data switch to understand the nature of the

device connecting to it, for example what is its

power requirement and does it require connecting

to a specifi c Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN)

for voice?

Why do Converged Networks

require High Availability?

As the trend to consolidate business critical

application onto IP Networks continues, it has

been realised that the network infrastructure as

a whole has to continue running even if individual

connections are lost. Traditional technologies

such as spanning tree protocol (STP) were

developed to establish redundant network paths

so that data could be automatically redirected to

alternate routes. However, with delay sensitive

applications such as Video or VoIP, the time it

takes for the network path to re-converge using

STP can result in connections timing out and

in some cases dropped. The impact of this is

frustration for users in dropped calls or video

sessions, and it increases the strain on the

network as applications attempt to re-establish

sessions. Extreme Networks address these

issues with their Ethernet Automatic Protection

Switching (EAPS) protocol delivering high speed

sub 50 millisecond network recovery.

Multi-Switch Link Aggregation (M-LAG)

A number of new protocols and approaches have been

suggested to address some of the shortcomings of

spanning tree protocol. One approach to addressing both

the performance as well as the resiliency requirements

of these highly virtualized data centers is to extend the

link-level redundancy capabilities of link aggregation and

add support for device-level redundancy. This can be

accomplished by allowing one end of the link aggregated

port group to be dual-homed into two different devices

to provide device-level redundancy. The other end of the

group is still single homed into a single device. See Figure

1 below.

In Figure 1, Device 1 treats the link aggregated ports as

a normal link aggregated trunk group, i.e. it does not see

anything different. Traffi c from Device 1 is distributed across

the ports in the group using traditional link aggregation

algorithms which would typically hash the traffi c across the

ports in the group using a variety of hashing algorithms.

If one of the links in the group were to go down, traffi c

would get redistributed across the remaining ports in the

group. However, the other end of link aggregated group

is where things now function differently. Device 2 and

Device 3 now work together to create the perception of a

common link aggregated group so that Device 1 doesn’t

see anything different from a link aggregation perspective,

even though the link aggregated ports are now distributed

across Device 2 and Device 3, thereby leading to the term

Multi-Switch Link Aggregation (M-LAG). Device 2 and

Device 3 communicate information to each other over the

Inter Switch Link (ISL) so that forwarding, learning and

bridging work consistently without causing any loops.

The ISL itself can be a regular LAG. If either the link to

Device 1 from Device 2 or Device 3 were to go down,

or if Device 2 or Device 3 itself went down, traffi c would

now get forwarded across the remaining link/device thus

providing both link-level and device-level redundancy.

The intelligence that allows the ports on Device 2 and

Device 3 to present itself as a single link aggregated trunk

group to Device 1 today is implemented using mostly

proprietary mechanisms, i.e. M-LAG technology is still

largely proprietary. However, the proprietary nature of the

technology is confi ned to the layer which presents itself as a

distributed link aggregated group, specifi cally Device 2 and

Device 3, both of which should come from the same vendor.

Device 1 does not participate in this proprietary protocol,

and in fact Device 1 may come from a different vendor and

can in fact be a different type of device. For example, Device

1 can be a server which has dual NICs teamed together,

while Device 2 and Device 3 can be Ethernet switches from

a single vendor. M-LAG can work at different layers from

the access to the core of the network. M-LAG can be used

in conjunction with traditional link aggregation to increase

bandwidth as well as add link-level redundancy between

devices. See Figure 2 below.

The Extreme Networks Open Fabric is a non-proprietary, open standards-based approach to provide Fabric-based solutions

for the data center and cloud computing environments. Most organizations, whether private or service provider-based, want

to maintain fl exibility and control of their network in order control cost and enable fl exibility in deployment and feature options

over time. Given this, data centers want to avoid proprietary technologies that would lead to vendor lock-in and lack of

pricing leverage.

Extreme Networks Open Fabric

Extreme Networks’ simple, fast and smart SDN platform tightly integrates with existing and multi-vendor hardware and

software network environments, preserving customer investments and avoiding vendor lock-in. Backward compatibility is

maintained with multi-vendor network infrastructure that conforms to the OpenFlow standard and other open APIs. Extreme

Networks’ OpenDaylight-based API, software development kit (SDK) and developer community will enable customers to

evolve the network to keep pace with emerging security, wireless, and converged SDN infrastructure.

The result is a simpler development platform that avoids the feature and capability limitations of other open SDN models

– many of which are really only truly applicable to new or ‘greenfield’ networking implementations. At the same time, this

platform also avoids the proprietary nature of other SDN models that results in vendor lock-in.

Extreme Networks Software Defined Networking (SDN) Platform:

Open, Standards-based and Comprehensive

Extreme Networks SDN plattform provide three key benefits that will enable customers to meet their challenges in implementing SDN.

• Simple Delivery of End-to-end Network Automation

• Fast Provisioning of Network Services and Applications

• Smart Orchestration That Supports Heterogeneous Networks and Protects Existing Investment

Extreme Networks SDN platform is evolutionary software defined networking

(SDN) platform to promote community led innovation. Customers should be able

to migrate their existing (brownfield) networks to SDN without expensive forklift

upgrades. Seamless SDN migration requires both an open, standards-based

and comprehensive approach with strong community mindshare and partner

ecosystem support.

Extreme Networks’ SDN platform is based on a comprehensive, hardened

OpenDaylight (ODL) controller that uniquely includes: network management,

network access control, application analytics and wireless controller technology.

Extreme Networks comprehensive approach preserves the integrity of the open

API provided by ODL while extending data center orchestration, automation and

provisioning to the entire network under a single pane of glass.

Choosing the best solution, modular chassis or (stackable) fi xed confi guration?

The Solutions fall into two families:

Modular vs. (Stackable) Fixed-port Switch Solutions

Over the past 10 years, Ethernet has become the foundation for global communications and innovative Ethernet switching

products from Extreme Networks have re-defi ned networking.

Now, new expectations for rich infrastructure capabilities, high security, and fl awless operations are testing network

professionals like never before. By delivering meaningful insight and unprecedented control Extreme Networks are

responding with solutions that help deliver secure, robust connectivity for voice, video, and data to a discerning and highly

mobile user community.

Ethernet switches come in two distinct form factors, both having two main uses in business enterprises: the wiring closet and

the core (or “backbone”) network. The wiring closet is the central point in a department or section of the building where the

wiring from all of the client devices (PC’s, IP Telephones, Printers, etc) converge. The needs in the wiring closets are increasing

all the time, including more ports, better security, more quality of service features for VoIP, and Power over Ethernet for IP

Telephones and WiFi access all the time.

Both modular and fi xed confi guration switches can have their place in the wiring closet

and the network core. The wiring closet generally does not need to have much port

media fl exibility, mainly using UTP fast/gigabit Ethernet. Therefore, stackable switches

are a good cost-effective solution for wiring closets.

Some companies prefer to use chassis based switches for wiring closet situations for

a ‘pay as you grow’ philosophy, despite the higher costs of modular switches. This

also offers a higher level of availability than fi xed confi guration switches with redundant

Key features

The BlackDiamond 8800 series switches deliver toll quality voice and

carrier class availability to the enterprise. Network managers can

deploy high-density Power over Ethernet (PoE), Gigabit Ethernet, and

10 Gigabit Ethernet wherever it’s needed.

With their comprehensive security features, both BlackDiamond

8800 series switches are the single modular switch solution for mid-

sized enterprises, offering next generation architecture that eliminates

bottlenecks at the edge and core.6-Port 40GBase-X QSFP+ Module

BlackDiamond 8800 Series

The increasing demands of IP Telephony deployments,

enterprise aggregation, corporate data centres, network

backbones and metro Ethernet provider Points of Presence

require solutions that combine consistent performance,

carrier-class availability, enhanced security and simplifi ed

management

BlackDiamond core switching products are designed and built to

deliver these critical requirements. These switches minimise latency

and jitter, which degrade the quality of voice and video applications.

They’re also highly resilient, a key aspect of voice-class availability

using technologies such as Ethernet Automatic Protection Switching

(EAPS) link resiliency standard to provide sub 50 millisecond link

failover recovery time. This multi-layered approach to security helps

safeguard your network and leverages best-of-breed appliances and

partners, so you can implement the security architecture that’s best for

you. Particularly in the large enterprise network and in service-provider

environments, there is the middle layer between core and edge which

is called the aggregation layer In this layer, aggregation switches play

an important role of aggregating traffi c from a large number of edge

switches to be forwarded to the core switches as well as receiving

traffi c from the core applications to distribute towards edge switches.

• Interconnect switch providing low-latency connections at

low power for data centres and High Performance Cluster

Computing (HPCC).

• Traditional Gigabit or 10 Gigabit Ethernet aggregation

switch.

• High-density PoE edge switch for integrated wired,

wireless and IP Telephony.

• Single switch network solution for small to mediumsized

networks.

• Low power consumption for reduced power & cooling.

Summit X440-G2 Series

The ExtremeSwitching X440-G2 series is based on Extreme Networks®

ExtremeXOS®, a highly resilient OS that provides continuous uptime,

manageability and operational effi ciency. Each switch offers the same

high-performance, non-blocking hardware technology, in the Extreme

Networks tradition of simplifying network deployments through the

use of common hardware and software throughout the network.

The ExtremeSwitching X440-G2 switches are cost-effective campus

edge switches with IEEE 802.3at PoE-plus.

Benefi ts & Features

All models come equipped with 4 ports of SFP 1GbE resident on

either the faceplate or rear panel of each model. These 1GbE ports

on most models are upgradeable to 10Gb SFP+ Ethernet on the 12,

24 and 48 port 10/100/1000 models via software licensing. Please

note that 10GbE upgrades are not supported on the extended

temperature models. In addition, there are four 1GbE SFP combo

ports on the front panel of the 24 and 48 port 10/100/1000 switches

(not applicable to 16541).

High-Performance Stacking

Up to eight X440-G2 switches can be stacked using SummitStack-V.

Each X440-G2 unit comes equipped with 2 stacking ports via an

SFP+ interface except for the extended temperature range switches.

Standard 10 Gb Ethernet Optics and passive and active cables

can be used in the SFP+ ports for stacking X440-G2s together via

SummitStack-V.

Role-Based Policy

Utilizing NetSight Policy Management, the role-based policy framework

empowers a network administrator to defi ne distinct roles or profi les

that represent industry specifi c operational groups that may exist in

an education or a business environment (e.g., administrator, teacher,

student, guest). Each defi ned role is granted individualized access to

specifi c network services and applications and these access privileges

remain associated with users as they move across both wired and

wireless network access points. Users can be authenticated via IEEE

802.1X, MAC address, or web authentication, and then assigned a

pre-defi ned operational role. Network operations can be seamlessly

tailored to meet business-oriented requirements by providing each

role with individualized access to network services and applications,

thus aligning network resource utilization with business goals and

priorities.

NetSight

Visibility and Control from Core to Edge

Extreme Networks NetSight’s rich set of integrated

management capabilities provides centralized visibility

and highly efficient anytime, anywhere control of

enterprise wired and wireless network resources.

NetSight is distinguished by web-based OneViewTM,

the unified control interface. Graphical and exceptionally

easy-to-use, OneViewTM simplifies troubleshooting,

help desk support tasks, problem solving and reporting.

It’s Identity and Access interface provides specialized

visibility and control for the exploding number of

managed and unmanaged devices connecting to

today’s networks.

• Supports IPv6

• Device discovery

• Network topology maps

• Flexviews and graphing

• Realcapture Feature

• Basic policy management

• Compass

• Vlan tools

• Mib browser tools

• Alarms and events

• Ease of installation

• Unified LAN/WLAN management system simplifies tools and automates management tasks across the entire

infrastructure

• Easy policy enforcement, network-wide, ensures the availability of network resources for today’s bandwidth intensive

applications

• Highly automated capabilities avoid time-consuming manual tasks for consistency and increased efficiency

• Specialized identity and access management for visibility and control of users’ devices

Benefits & Features

NetSight is distinctive for granularity that reaches beyond ports, VLANs

and SSIDs down to individual users, applications, and protocols. NetSight

increases efficiency, enabling IT staff to avoid time-consuming manual device-

by-device configuration tasks. NetSight fills the functionality gap between

traditional element managers that offer limited vendor-specific device control,

and expensive, complex enterprise management applications.

NetSight, with wireless management, is the foundation for centrally monitoring

and managing all the components in the infrastructure. NetSight enables

the network infrastructure to be viewed as a unified whole rather than as a

collection of disparate individual components. It transforms complex network

data into graphical, business-centric information making the network less

complicated and better aligned with business requirements.

With its distributed client/server architecture, NetSight is exceptionally convenient to use. A user with appropriate

security credentials anywhere on the network can access a launch page and log into any of the NetSight capabilities.

NetSight simplifies routine and one-time tasks such as reconfiguring switches and access points, monitoring network

performance, and isolating faults. It takes advantage of advanced functionality in Extreme Networks switching,

routing, and wireless products including topology maps, FlexViews (graphical depictions of a broad range of network

parameters), VLAN management, device discovery, and event logging.
