This works in tandem with ABS, analysing weightdistribution around the car and automaticallyadjusting the braking force applied to the front andrear wheels to help maintain directional stability.

ABS prevents the wheels from locking when the

brakes are applied in an emergency, reducing thepossibility of a skid on wet, icy or loose surfaces,and enabling the driver to retain steering control.

Changes the timing angle of the intake sidecamshaft relative to the crankshaft as engine speedand load change. This way the cylinder lling withair/fuel mixture is optimised for improved torque andperformance, with 90% of torque available at just3,000 rpm.

Varies the amount of valve lift and the duration of

valve opening during the intake stroke of each enginecylinder. The effect is optimised combustion overchanging engine speeds, with the result of reducedfuel consumption and emissions as well as increasedengine performance.

An electric motor assists steering instead of hydraulics.It runs off the battery, not engine, so helps to reduceemissions and fuel consumption.

Carbon dioxide is one of the exhaust gases believedto be one of the causes of the Green House Effect.

Therefore, the lower the CO 2 emissions, the betterit is for the environment.

The Jazz has been designed with an innovativeframe structure engineered to reduce theconcentrated frontal force on occupants in frontend impacts. The Jazz’s Advanced CompatibilityEngineering (ACE) design disperses and absorbscrash energy over a larger area, enhancing thepreservation of the cabin space and improvingsafety for all occupants. Additionally, ACE alsohelps to reduce misalignment with vehicles ofdifferent sizes; the design of the Jazz’s structurereduces impact forces acting upon other vehicles.

The gures for the fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions are to give you an indication of the car’sperformance. Following legislation by the VCA(Vehicle Certication Agency), all car manufacturersgenerate these statistics through the same industrystandard test. This allows comparison across allmanufacturers and models. The tests use a standardversion of the model and do not take into accountoptional levels of equipment, such as different sizedwheels, tyres and other factors that can affect theeconomy of the model. The test is on a rolling roadand there is no additional weight in the car other thanthe driver (no passengers or cargo) and it does notaccount for individual driving style, which can meana difference to the gures achievable in the real world.

VSA helps keep the Jazz on course in adverse drivingconditions by detecting and correcting potentialundersteer or oversteer. The system continuallymonitors vehicle speed, throttle position, individualwheel speeds, steering angle, lateral G-force andyaw rate to detect when oversteer or understeeris imminent. When necessary, VSA automaticallyreduces the engine’s torque and uses the ABSsystem to apply brakes to each wheel, as needed,to help stabilise the vehicle. The response is so quickthat the instability may be corrected before the drivereven knows it’s occurring.

IMA stands for Integrated Motor Assist, which meansthat an electric motor sits alongside the petrol engineit supports. The Jazz uses an electric motor to assistthe petrol engine, ensuring fuel consumption andemissions are kept to a minimum.

The system uses the petrol engine as the mainsource of power to drive the car. The electric motorcombines with the engine to provide torque andpower during starts or accelerating, when engine fuelconsumption is usually high.

When the vehicle comes to a halt, the petrol enginestops and the car runs only from the battery. Thismeans no petrol is being consumed and so there areno emissions.

The combination of VTEC and VTC for improvedengine performance, fuel economy and emissions.

Selects the best drive ratio to keep the engine in itsmost efcient power range. This delivers the optimumfuel economy and ensures that the most efcientdrive ratio is always selected. This promotes betterfuel economy, lower emissions and an exceptionallysmooth ride.
