Farbe als Element der Integration.Stockholms neue, 833 m lange Årsta-Brücke, die in 45 mAbstand parallel zur 1929 errichteten Eisenbahnbrücke ver-läuft, wurde im August 2005 mit einer feierlichen Zeremonievon König Carl XVI Gustav von Schweden eröffnet. Das elegan-te Bauwerk schwingt quer über die Årstaviken Bay und kom-muniziert durch seine rhythmisch gegliederten Konturen formalmit der bereits bestehenden Brücke. Der organische Schwung der neuen Årsta-Brücke stellt aber auch eine gelungene Ver-bindung mit der umgebenden Landschaft dar. Und dass die neueÅrsta-Brücke kraftvoll im traditionellen Falunrot strahlt, ist eineReferenz vor der Farbe, in der seit Ende des 16. Jahrhundertsschwedische Landhäuser gestrichen werden. So schlägt diesesvom Stararchitekten Lord Norman Foster, Foster + Partners,entworfene Bauwerk nicht nur die Brücke zwischen Landschaftund Architektur, sondern auch zwischen Tradition und Moderne.

Color as an element of integration. Stockholm’s new 833 m-long Årsta Bridge, which runs parallelto the existing railway bridge built in 1929, was inauguratedduring a festive ceremony by King Carl XVI Gustav of Swedenin August, 2005.The elegant new structure sweeps acrossÅrstaviken Bay, its rhythmic contours interacting with the existingbridge 45 m away. The organic waveform of the new Årsta Bridgeis beautifully integrated into the surround landscape, in partbecause of the traditional “Falun-Red” color that matches thecolor of Swedish country homes that has been used since the16th century. Thus, the structure, designed by the leadingarchitect Lord Norman Foster, Foster + Partners, is not only abridge between landscape and architecture, but also betweentraditional and contemporary design.

For the red-brown coloring of theconcrete, 350 t of iron oxide pig-ments were used, a special mixturebased on Bayferrox® 640.

Der nach unten gerundete Körper der Fahrbahndecke strecktsich in einer langen Kurve über zehn Stützpfeiler mit ellipti-schem Querschnitt. Diese ruhige, unaufgeregte Geometrienimmt – architektonisch gesehen – die große Gelassenheit derÅrstaviken Bay auf, in die sich die neue Årsta-Brücke dadurchoptisch äußerst harmonisch einfügt.

The body of the rail system deck, with its elliptical underbelly,stretches out in a long sweeping curve over ten supportingcolumns. Architecturally, the sedate, calming geometry of theÅrsta Bridge reflects the tranquility of the Årstaviken Bay andblends harmoniously with the environment.

Natur und Technik können miteinander harmonieren.Den Vorstellungen des Architekten Norman Foster folgend, wurde die Verschalung der Brücke in Anlehnung an traditionelleBaumethoden aus soliden Holzplanken gefertigt. So entstandals Oberflächenstruktur eine natürliche Patina, die – in Verbin-dung mit dem traditionellen Falunrot – eine optimale Integra-tion der Brücke in ihre natürliche Umgebung ermöglichte. Dochnicht nur die optische, auch die akustische Integration war denArchitekten wichtig. Um die Fahrgeräusche der Züge zu ver-ringern, sind die beiden Eisenbahngleise auf den Brückendecksmit Schallschutzvorrichtungen versehen. Und um auch dieVibration auf ein Minimum zu beschränken, fahren die Züge auf speziell gepolsterten Schienen.

Nature and technology can harmonize with one another.Following the design concepts of the architect Norman Foster,the forms for the bridge were manufactured according to tradi-tional building methods using solid wood planks. This created a natural patina, which, in combination with the traditional“Falun-Red” color, enabled a cultural integration of the bridgewith the local environment. In addition to how the bridge looked,the architects were concerned about noise pollution. Therefore,both railroad tracks were equipped with noise control deviceson the bridge decks. And to keep vibration to a minimum, thetrains run on specially padded rails.

Die 19,5 m breite und 26 m hohe Brücke steht auf zehn Stützpfeilern mit einer Spannweite von 65 bis 78 m. Sechs da-von befinden sich an Land auf felsigem Untergrund, zwei imÅrstaviken und zwei sind am Grund der Bucht mit je 35 Pfählenà 80 cm Durchmesser verankert. Die Säulen wurden mit siebenLagen Eisen armiert. Die gesamte Konstruktion besteht aus23.000 m3 eingefärbtem und 6.000 m3 ungefärbtem Beton.

The bridge, which is 19.5 m wide and 26 m high, stands on tencolumns that support a span of 65 to 78 m. Six of the columnsare built on bedrock, two in the Årstaviken Bay, and two areanchored at the base of the bay, each with 35 rods that are 80 cmin diameter. The columns have been reinforced with seven additional layers of steel. The entire construction project consistsof 23,000 m3 of colored and 6,000 m3 of uncolored concrete.

Eingefärbter Beton muss viele Bedingungen erfüllen.Da der Beton zahlreichen technischen Anforderungen genügenmusste, dauerte es knapp sechs Monate, bis man die richtige Betonmischung für die neue Årsta-Brücke gefunden hatte. Dereingefärbte Beton musste lange Transportwege bewältigen,pumpbar und in die Brückenstrukturen verteilbar sein. Er durftenicht in seiner Festigkeit beeinträchtigt sein und hatte frei vonRissen zu sein. Und last, but not least musste eine gleichmäßigeund ausreichende Dispergierung erzielt werden. Am Ende stimmtenicht nur das Falunrot, auch Beschaffenheit, Luftporengehalt,Fließbarkeit und die Verarbeitbarkeit waren perfekt. Dass sichdie Mühe gelohnt hat, beweist das Ergebnis: die neue Årsta-Brücke von Stockholm.

Colored concrete must fulfill many requirements. Since the concrete had to fulfill numerous technical requirements,it took nearly six months for the engineers to develop the correctconcrete mix for the new Årsta Bridge. First of all, since the spansare long, the concrete had to be pumpable with good flowabilityand processability, and distributed evenly throughout the struc-tures. It had to be consistent from batch to batch, strength couldnot be compromised, and it had to be free from cracks. Last butnot least, for good color consistency, the pigment had to be evenlydistributed in the mix. In the end, the concrete and its red colorare beautiful, and the Årsta Bridge in Stockholm is a work of art.

Betoniert wurde auf einer 130 m langen Bauplattform, die anden bereits fertig gestellten Abschnitten befestigt und auf dennächsten beiden Stützen aufgelagert wurde. Um große Farb-tonvariationen zu vermeiden, waren die Bretter der Schalungmit rot pigmentiertem Zement eingeschlämmt. Das Gießen dauerte 24 Stunden ohne Unterbrechung. Mehr als 300 m3

waren dann in die Gießform eingepumpt.

Die Verantwortlichen entschieden sich statt für einen Anstrichfür eingefärbten Beton, da er eine Reihe von Vorteilen hinsicht-lich der Instandhaltung und der Haltbarkeit besitzt. Die Pigmente von LANXESS zeichnen sich zudem durch einehohe Wetterstabilität aus, sind extrem gut fixiert, zementechtund ökologisch unbedenklich.

Pouring the concrete was carried out in sections on a 130 mlong building platform which was attached to the already com-pleted sections, and then mounted to two supporting columns.In order to avoid major color variations, the wood boards ofthe forms were covered with red-pigmented cement slurry. Each 24 hour pour was continuous, with more than 300 m3 ofconcrete pumped into the mold.

Instead of painting the concrete, those responsible for the projectdecided to use colored concrete since it offers advantages interms of maintenance and durability. The pigments from LANXESS are weather stable, become firmlyintegrated in the cement matrix and are environmentally safe.These attributes add to the environmental friendliness of theÅrsta Bridge project.

During the bridge construction, a special emphasis was placedon the protection of the environment. This process focused on noise control, air emissions, waste disposal management and the use of environmentally friendly materials. Colors and chemicals were tested for harmlessness.

Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt während des Brückenbaus lagauf dem Schutz der Umwelt. Dabei standen die Bereiche Lärm-schutz, Luftemissionen, Altlastenentsorgung sowie der Einsatzumweltschonender Materialien im Vordergrund. Farben undChemikalien wurden auf Unschädlichkeit geprüft.
