Camp Dawson, the West VirginiaNational Guard Training Base, ocated near Kingwood, WV, onceagain played host to the annualWest Virginia Wing Cadet Sum-mer Encampment. This year, aotal of 90 West Virginia Wing

cadets and 21 out-of-state cadetsrepresenting 7 different wings, along with 12 senior members, attended the week long encamp-ment. The encampment was com-manded by Lt Col Dennis Barron,a veteran of many past encamp-ments, and Lt Col David Caudill,Deputy Commander.

Throughout the week, the cadetsenjoyed a full schedule of activi-ies and classes that were both

educational and lots of fun. Thecadets built and launched theirown model rockets, attempted tomaster a 60 foot climbing wall, fired various weapons in an elec-

ronic simulator, plus fired actualweapons on the firing range, andparticipated in sports and drillcompetition. The cadets alsomade good use of the base swim-ming pool and attempted to con-quer a new Leadership ReactionCourse that was just completed atCamp Dawson. In between allhese activities, the cadets honedheir skills in drill and ceremonies, earned how to make a bed themilitary way, practiced their lead-ership skills, and made lots of newfriends around the Wing and in

    neighboring Wings.

One of the highlights of this yearsencampment was a whole daydevoted to learning land and watersurvival skills. Instructors from the167th Air Wing of the WV Air Na-ional Guard, in Martinsburg, spent

one morning teaching the cadetshow to build shelters, obtain food,

and water from the wild, and howto navigate through the woods. Inthe afternoon, the instructors tookthe cadets to the base pool forwater survival training.

As part of the WV NationalGuards Drug Demand Reductionprogram, the cadets were taken tothe Guards new rappel tower. There the DDR instructors led thecadets down the brand new 60foot rappel tower. Stepping overthe edge of the tower was nosmall feat, and rappelling downthe 60 wall was the thrill of a lifetime for many of the cadets. Inaddition, the cadets drove golfcarts through an obstacle coursewhile visually impaired from wear-ing Fatal Vision Goggles. All thewhile, the DDR instructors re-minded the cadets how importantit was to maintain a drug free lifestyle.

The encampment was capped offon the last day with a formal Passand Review Parade, which waswitnessed by many parents, guests, friends, and CAP mem-bers. This was followed by astanding room only graduationceremony. During the graduationceremonies, the following awardswere handed out to some of the

    outstanding cadets of the en-campment:

leadership, discipline, and team-work. The National Guard andDDR instructors were top notchand everyone had a great time.

    Encampment Appreciation Awards

The topic of the August 18thsquadron meeting was aero-space, which was held for thefirst time at the new unithanger. The A. E. meeting fea-tured a presentation by Mr.Donald (Don) Siler, Jr., Vice-President and Chief Pilot of AirPhotographics, Inc. (API). Thecadets, officers, and guestswere given a "look and touch"tour of Air Photographics PiperPA 31-310 Navajo twin engine

Aircraft used by API for aerialphotography.

Mr. Siler, who has been a map-ping pilot for over 14 years, ex-plained the nature of aerial pho-tography and who usually usestheir services. Mr. Siler went onto explain that air photos areuse by government plannersand planning commissions forgrowth studies and develop-ment characteristics (and to

check on who has built astructure without a buildingpermit) Topographic mappingis also used by engineers forsite development design anddevelopment of USGS maps. Some photos are just promo-tional to give a birds-eye viewof a notable place or struc-ture. Examples of APIs workwere on display for the mem-ber's inspection.

As we enter the fallmonths, the usualsummertime swimmingactivities and otheroutdoor things we dofor fun traditionallyslow down. One couldthen get very compla-cent about everydaysafety issues

that frequently occur. Those who have livedaround this area forany length of timeknow that deer have atendency to come intoconflict while drivingyour vehicle, especiallyduring hunting sea-

    son. Recently, I've

noticed a lot of deadwildlife along side ofthe road where a motorvehicle has struck adeer or other animal.Thankfully, in mostcases where a motorvehicle hits a deer,

    there usually isn't any .

bodily injury but thereis a lot of substantialdamage to the vehicle. In the WV Wing, therehave been severalmishaps where motorvehicles and aircrafthave come into conflictwith deer. I know atthe Martinsburg Airportthere are many deerthat roam around thearea, both inside andoutside of the perime-ter fence, that couldvery easily cause amishap with an aircraftor vehicle. So duringthis fall season, pleasebe extra vigilant about

    deer while driving andflying.

In addition to deer be-ing a potential fall haz-ard to our pilots, in-flight icing is anotherseasonal hazard thatwe will start contendingwithin the coming

months. To all pilotplease be sure to gea good weather brieing and be on thelookout for AIRMETregarding icing. Al-though the airplaneassigned to oursquadron has greatavionics to assist inmaking our situationawareness very simple, our aircraft is NOapproved for knownicing. So if you get weather briefing andthere are the typical

AIRMETS for icingand you're not 100%confident you will be

able to stay out ofIMC, please don't fAs always, let's keepsafety our utmost prority in our squadronoperations.
