Our national and international networks also provide students with the opportunity to supplement their Mas-ter's degree program with a degree from a partner faculty in Switzerland or abroad. ECTS CreditsThe Master's degree program at the Faculty of Law of the University of Zurich is worth 90 ECTS credits.

Duration of ProgramGaining a Master's degree is dependent on earning the specified number of ECTS credits. 90 ECTS credits are equivalent to three standard semesters of study. Students can also opt to earn the required ECTS credits over a lon-ger period. Once earned, ECTS credits remain valid for up to 10 years.

Beginning Your StudiesYou may begin your studies in either the Fall Semester or the Spring Semester.

Objectives and ContentThe Master's degree program consolidates and extends the knowledge acquired during the Bachelor's program. Students can specialize and study subjects in greater depth according to their interests and preferences. Elec-tives account for a large part of the study program. The available modules are varied in their content and meth-odology, and different methods of teaching and learning are used. The Master's degree program gives students an in-depth legal education and fosters their ability to work independently on academic and practical tasks. A high priority is attached to teaching a legal mindset and the ability to absorb information independently (self-study).

In addition to the practical subjects, students in the Mas-ter's degree program also specialize in certain basic sub-jects of their choice (e.g. Methodology, Legal Theory, Soci-ology of Law, etc.) and study these in greater depth. They also have the opportunity to attend courses at other fac-ulties and to have credits for this coursework transferred, which encourages interdisciplinarity.

Program StructureThe Master's degree program comprises core elective, and elective modules, together with one or more Mas-ter's theses. In addition, in the Master of Law UZH with a Concentration in Business Law, students complete com-pulsory modules.

Compulsory modules are mandatory for all students.Core elective modules are chosen from a prescribed list (core elective pool).

Ziel und InhaltDer Masterstudiengang vertieft und ergänzt das im Bachelor erworbene Wissen. Die Studierenden können sich gemäss ihren Interessen und Neigungen vertiefen und spezialisieren. Ein grosser Teil des Programms wird durch Wahlbereiche abgedeckt. Die angebotenen Module sind inhaltlich und methodisch vielfältig, es kommen unterschiedliche Lehr- und Lernformen zum Einsatz. Der Masterstudiengang vermittelt eine vertiefte rechts-wissenschaftliche Bildung sowie die Fähigkeit zum selb-ständigen wissenschaftlichen und praktischen Arbeiten. Der Schulung des juristischen Denkens und der Fähig-keit zur eigenständigen Stoffaneignung (Selbststudium) wird grosse Bedeutung beigemessen.

Die Studierenden des Masterstudiengangs spezialisie-ren sich und vertiefen neben praxisorientierten Themen einige Grundlagenfächer nach Wahl (z.B. Methodenlehre, Rechtstheorie, Rechtssoziologie usw.). Ausserdem besteht die Möglichkeit, Veranstaltungen aus anderen Fakultä-ten zu besuchen und anrechnen zu lassen, wodurch die Interdisziplinarität gefördert wird.

StudienaufbauDer Masterstudiengang umfasst Wahlpflicht- und Wahl-module sowie eine oder mehrere Masterarbeiten. Beim Master of Law UZH mit Schwerpunkt Wirtschaftsrecht werden zusätzlich Pflichtmodule absolviert.

Pflichtmodule sind für alle Studierenden obligatorisch.Wahlpflichtmodule sind aus einer vorgegebenen Liste (Wahlpflichtpool) auszuwählen.

Elective modules can be chosen from the entire Master's curriculum at the Faculty of Law and, to the value of 6 or 12 ECTS credits respectively, from the entire curricu-lum (Bachelor's and Master's) at other faculties and the Language Center of the University of Zurich and ETH Zurich.Modules are made up of one or more courses and nor-mally extend over one semester. They are generally worth 6 ECTS credits (a workload of 180 hours). That equates to two hours of class time per semester week, with the remaining time devoted to self-study. An assess-ment must be obtained for each module. This may take the form of a written or oral examination or some other assessment (a paper, presentation, etc.).

Master's ThesisDuring the Master's study program, students must write one or more Master's theses (papers or coursework com-pleted in connection with moot courts or a Model United Nations conference). Master's theses may be written as part of a module or by individual agreement with the member of the teaching staff.

Moot CourtA moot court is a legal competition where students act as representatives of fictitious litigants in front of a simu-lated court. Moot courts, which originated in the United States, are designed to encourage the practical application of theoretical knowledge and practicing rhetorical skills and improvised speech. Today, moot courts are offered in practically all areas of law. For example, the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot, in which students from our Faculty have already taken part very successfully, is the most important international moot court event in the field of civil law and is regarded as the «Olympics of international trade law».

Wahlmodule sind aus dem gesamten jeweiligen Master-angebot der Rechtswissenschaftlichen Fakultät sowie im Umfang von 6 bzw. 12 ECTS Credits aus dem gesamten Angebot (Bachelor und Master) anderer Fakultäten sowie des Sprachenzentrums der Universität und der ETH Zürich wählbar.Die Module setzen sich aus einer oder mehreren Lehrver-anstaltungen zusammen und erstrecken sich in der Regel über ein Semester. Die Mehrheit der Module umfasst 6 ECTS Credits (180 Std. Arbeitsaufwand). Das entspricht zwei Semesterwochenstunden Präsenzzeit, die restliche Zeit ist dem Selbststudium gewidmet. Für jedes Modul ist ein Leistungsnachweis zu erbringen. Es kann sich dabei um eine schriftliche oder mündliche Prüfung oder um einen anderen Leistungsnachweis (schriftliche Haus-arbeit, Referat usw.) handeln.

MasterarbeitIm Verlauf des Masterstudiums müssen die Studierenden eine oder mehrere Masterarbeit/en (schriftliche Haus-arbeiten bzw. Leistungen im Rahmen von Moot Courts oder Model United Nations) verfassen. Masterarbeiten können im Rahmen eines Moduls oder nach individuel-ler Vereinbarung mit der Dozentin/dem Dozenten ver-fasst werden.

Moot CourtBeim Moot Court handelt es sich um einen juristischen Wettbewerb, in welchem Studierende als Vertreter fikti-ver Prozessparteien vor einem simulierten Gericht einen Fall verhandeln. Der ursprünglich aus den Vereinigten Staaten stammende Moot Court zielt auf die praxisnahe Anwendung von theoretischem Wissen sowie auf das Erlernen von Rhetorik und freier Rede ab. Moot Courts werden mittlerweile in fast allen Rechtsgebieten angebo-ten. Der Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitra-tion Moot beispielsweise, an welchem Studierende unse-rer Fakultät bereits mit Erfolg teilgenommen haben, ist die bedeutendste internationale Moot-Court-Veranstal-tung auf dem Gebiet des Zivilrechts und wird als «The olympics of international trade law» angesehen.

Model United NationsAt a Model United Nations (MUN) conference, students take part in simulated actions of UN bodies, much like at a moot court. MUN conferences are organized by uni-versities and bring together student teams from all over the world. At these conferences, students discuss cur-rent issues in world politics, with each team represent-ing a specific country in the various UN bodies. Because the process very strongly resembles the actual processes of the UN, participants gain valuable insights into how the UN works. A MUN conference also offers a unique opportunity to practice negotiating in a multicultural environment.

LanguageMost of the courses are taught in German, though some are offered in English. The courses offered in English can be found at www.ius.uzh.ch/en/studies/mobility/interna-tional/uzh/courses.html.

MobilityMobility stays are possible at any Swiss faculty of law or at many faculties of law abroad. A maximum of 30 of the required 90 ECTS credits may be earned at other facul-ties of law in Switzerland and abroad. You can find an overview of our international partnerships in this folder. Additional information may be obtained from the mobil-ity offices and student advisory offices of the correspond-ing home and partner universities.

Career ProspectsThe specific career prospects for graduates of the Mas-ter's degree program with or without a concentration are listed in the relevant study program description. The Master's degree program at the Faculty of Law of the Uni-versity of Zurich is also a step towards the cantonal bar examination. In addition, conferral of a doctorate after the degree program or during the final phase of the Mas-ter's program (also referred to as the fast track) opens the door to an academic career.

Model United NationsAn einer Model United Nations (MUN) werden die Organe der UNO von Studierenden - ähnlich wie bei einem Moot Court - simuliert. MUN werden von Universitäten orga-nisiert und bringen Studierendenteams aus der ganzen Welt zusammen. An den Konferenzen werden aktuelle Themen der Weltpolitik diskutiert, wobei die Studieren-denteams jeweils ein konkretes Land in verschiedenen UNO-Organen vertreten. Weil sich die Verfahren stark am realen Vorbild UNO anlehnen, gewinnen die Teilnehmen-den wertvolle Einblicke in das Funktionieren der UNO. Zudem bietet ein MUN eine einzigartige Gelegenheit, sich im Verhandeln in einem multikulturellen Umfeld zu üben.

MobilitätMobilitätsaufenthalte sind an allen schweizerischen Rechtsfakultäten sowie an vielen ausländischen Rechts-fakultäten möglich. BerufsperspektivenDie spezifischen Berufsperspektiven des Masterstudien-gangs ohne bzw. mit Schwerpunkt werden in der entspre-chenden Beschreibung aufgeführt. Der Masterstudiengang der Rechtswissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Universität Zürich ebnet auch den Weg zur kantonalen Anwaltsprü-fung. ECTS CreditsThe Double Degree Master's programs are made up of the study program at the Faculty of Law of the University of Zurich and the study program at a partner faculty. The study program at the Faculty of Law is worth 60 ECTS credits. The study programs at the partner faculties are governed by their own provisions.

Duration of ProgramA Double Degree Master's program normally lasts four semesters. Two semesters are spent at the Faculty of Law of the University of Zurich and two at the partner faculty.

Beginning Your StudiesThe courses offered at the Faculty of Law of the Univer-sity of Zurich are organized so that students begin their studies in the Fall Semester. The Double Degree Master's program generally commences at the home faculty.

AdmissionAll students will be admitted who meet the admission requirements to a Master's program at the University of Zurich and who were chosen through the selection pro-cess of the Faculty of Law. Special admission require-ments apply for some of our partner faculties.

Objectives and ContentThe Master's degree programs that are run jointly with partner faculties offer students the opportunity to extend and consolidate their knowledge of the Swiss legal sys-tem, the legal system of the country in which the part-ner faculty is located, and international law. Facilitating familiarity with foreign legal systems is a key objective of the degree programs.

ECTS CreditsDie Double Degree Masterstudiengänge setzen sich aus dem Studienprogramm an der Rechtswissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Univeristät Zürich und dem Studienpro-gramm an einer Partnerfakultät zusammen. Das Studi-enprogramm an der Rechtswissenschaftlichen Fakultät umfasst 60 ECTS Credits. Die Studienprogramme an den Partnerfakultäten richten sich nach deren Bestimmungen.

StudiendauerEin Double Degree Masterstudiengang dauert in der Regel vier Semester. Es werden je zwei Semester an der Rechtswissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Universität Zürich und an der Partnerfakultät absolviert.

StudienbeginnDas Lehrangebot der Rechtswissenschaftlichen Fakul-tät der Universität Zürich ist auf den Studienbeginn im Herbstsemester ausgerichtet. Das Double Degree Master-studium beginnt in der Regel an der Heimfakultät.

Time spent abroad and a good knowledge of legal ter-minology give students an important competitive edge in all areas of legal work. The Double Degree Master's program enables students to graduate with two Master's degrees (from the home and partner faculties) in the rela-tively short time frame of two years.

Study ProgramThe study program at the Faculty of Law of the Univer-sity of Zurich is worth 60 ECTS credits, which are equiva-lent to two standard semesters of study. The study pro-grams at the partner faculties are governed by their own provisions.

The Double Degree study program at the Faculty of Law of the University of Zurich, which is taught mainly in German, may be completed either with or without one of the following concentrations:

• Legal Practice• Business Law• Public Law

In addition, within the Double Degree study program, the following concentrations are offered and taught exclusively in English:

• General Studies • European and International Law • International Business Law

Rechtsordnung, der Rechtsordnung des Landes der jewei-ligen Partnerfakultät und des internationalen Rechts zu erweitern und zu vertiefen. Die Vertrautheit mit auslän-dischen Rechtsordnungen ist ein wichtiges Anliegen der Stundiengänge.

Auslandaufenthalte und gute Kenntnisse der Rechts-sprache sind in allen Bereichen rechtlicher Tätigkeiten ein wichtiger Wettbewerbsvorteil. Der Double Degree Master studiengang ermöglicht den Abschluss mit zwei Mastertiteln (Heim- und Partnerfakultät) in der relativ kurzen Zeitspanne von zwei Jahren.

StudienprogrammDas Studienprogramm an der Rechtswissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Universität Zürich umfasst 60 ECTS Credits, was einer Regelstudienzeit von zwei Semestern ent-spricht. Die Studienprogramme an den Partnerfakultäten richten sich nach deren Bestimmungen.

Master's ThesisStudents must write one or more Master's theses (papers or coursework completed in connection with moot courts or a Model United Nations conference) worth 18 ECTS credits. Master's theses may be written as part of a mod-ule or by individual agreement with the member of the teaching staff.

Moot CourtA moot court is a legal competition where students act as representatives of fictitious litigants in front of a simu-lated court. Moot courts, which originated in the United States, are designed to encourage the practical application of theoretical knowledge and practicing rhetorical skills and improvised speech. Today, moot courts are offered in practically all areas of law. For example, the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot, in which students from our Faculty have already taken part very successfully, is the most important international moot court event in the field of civil law and is regarded as the «Olympics of international trade law».

Model United NationsAt a Model United Nations (MUN) conference, students take part in simulated actions of UN bodies, much like at a moot court. MUN conferences are organized by uni-versities and bring together student teams from all over the world. At these conferences, students discuss cur-rent issues in world politics, with each team represent-ing a specific country in the various UN bodies. Because the process very strongly resembles the actual processes of the UN, participants gain valuable insights into how the UN works. An MUN conference also offers a unique opportunity to practice negotiating in a multicultural environment.

MasterarbeitDie Studierenden müssen eine oder mehrere Maste r -arbeit/en (schriftliche Hausarbeiten bzw. Leistungen im Rahmen von Moot Courts oder Model United Nations) im Umfang von 18 ECTS Credits verfassen. Masterar beiten können im Rahmen eines Moduls oder nach individu-eller Vereinbarung mit der Dozentin/mit dem Dozenten verfasst werden.

Moot CourtBeim Moot Court handelt es sich um einen juristischen Wettbewerb, in welchem Studierende als Vertreter fikti-ver Prozessparteien vor einem simulierten Gericht einen Fall verhandeln. Der ursprünglich aus den Vereinigten Staaten stammende Moot Court zielt auf die praxisnahe Anwendung von theoretischem Wissen sowie auf das Erlernen von Rhetorik und freier Rede ab. Moot Courts werden mittlerweile in fast allen Rechtsgebieten angebo-ten. Der Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitra-tion Moot beispielsweise, an welchem Studierende unse-rer Fakultät bereits mit Erfolg teilgenommen haben, ist die bedeutendste internationale Moot-Court-Veranstaltung auf dem Gebiet des Zivilrechts und wird als «The olym-pics of international trade law» angesehen.

Model United NationsAn einer Model United Nations (MUN) werden die Organe der UNO von Studierenden - ähnlich wie bei einem Moot Court - simuliert. MUN werden von Univer-sitäten organisiert und bringen Studierendenteams aus der ganzen Welt zusammen. An den Konferenzen werden aktuelle Themen der Weltpolitik diskutiert, wobei die Stu-dierendenteams jeweils ein konkretes Land in verschie-denen UNO-Organen vertreten. Weil sich die Verfahren stark am realen Vorbild UNO anlehnen, gewinnen die Teilnehmenden wertvolle Einblicke in das Funktionieren der UNO. Zudem bietet ein MUN eine einzigartige Gele-genheit, sich im Verhandeln in einem multikulturellen Umfeld zu üben.

Career ProspectsThe specific career prospects for graduates of the vari-ous Double Degree Master's programs are listed in the relevant study program descriptions. Most notably, there are potential areas of work in international law firms and companies, and in international institutions. All Double Degree Master's programs also constitute a step towards the cantonal bar examination. In addition, conferral of a doctorate after the degree program opens the door to an academic career.

RegistrationBefore applying to a Double Degree Master's program, students must go through the regular application and registration process at the University of Zurich. After having been accepted to the Master's program through the general admission process at the University of Zurich, they must then submit their application file to the Dean's Office at the Faculty of Law for a place on a Double Degree Master's program. Matriculation, Tuition and FeesStudents are matriculated at the partner faculty for the duration of the study program there. The tuition and fees at the partner faculty depend on the relevant agreement between the Faculty of Law at the University of Zurich and the partner faculty.

BerufsperspektivenDie spezifischen Berufsperspektiven der einzelnen Double Degree Masterstudiengänge werden in der ent-sprechenden Beschreibung aufgeführt. Besonders her-vorzuheben sind Betätigungsfelder in international aus-gerichteten Anwaltskanzleien und Unternehmen sowie in internationalen Institutionen. Alle Double Degree Masterstudiengänge ebnen auch den Weg zur kanto-nalen Anwaltsprüfung. Die erfolgreiche Promotion im Anschluss an den Studiengang ermöglicht zudem eine akademische Karriere.

ECTS CreditsThe bilingual Joint Degree Master's program is worth 90 ECTS credits, of which at least 36 ECTS credits must be earned at the Faculty of Law of the University of Zurich and 36 at the Faculty of Law, Criminal Justice and Public Administration of the University of Lausanne, with 18 ECTS credits being earned through one or more Master's theses.

Duration of ProgramThe bilingual Joint Degree Master's program normally lasts for three semesters. At least one semester is spent at each partner faculty. The third semester generally involves coursework at both partner faculties.

Objectives and ContentThe Joint Degree Master's program builds on the gen-eral objectives and content of the Master's degree pro-gram and adds a pan-Swiss focus. Students are given the opportunity to study simultaneously in Zurich and Lausanne and to earn a joint Master's degree from both universities. Since the degree programs at the two fac-ulties overlap in core areas but otherwise set different priorities, students' professional expertise is enriched. A particular focus at the Lausanne faculty is on the area of comparative law. The Swiss Institute for Compara-tive Law, which is located on the University of Lausanne campus, provides additional input here. Another special feature of the Lausanne faculty is the study of criminal science. Students from Zurich will also gain the ability to perform legal work in French.

Ziel und InhaltDer Joint Degree Masterstudiengang baut auf den allge-meinen Zielen und Inhalten des Masterprogramms auf und fügt eine gesamtschweizerische Ausrichtung hinzu. Den Studierenden wird die Möglichkeit geboten, gleich-zeitig in Zürich und Lausanne zu studieren und einen gemeinsamen Masterabschluss beider Universitäten zu erwerben. Da sich die Studienangebote beider Fakultä-ten zwar im Kernbereich überschneiden, ansonsten aber eigene Prioritäten setzen, erfolgt eine fachliche Bereiche-rung. Ein Schwerpunkt der Lausanner Fakultät liegt auf dem Gebiet der Rechtsvergleichung. Das Schweizerische Institut für Rechtsvergleichung, das sich auf dem Cam-pus der Universität Lausanne befindet, bietet hier zusätz-liche Anregungen. Als Besonderheit der Lausanner Fakultät sind ausserdem die Kriminalwissenschaften zu nennen. Die Zürcher Studierenden können zusätzlich die Fähigkeit erwerben, in der französischen Sprache juris-tisch arbeiten zu können.

Career ProspectsThe Joint Degree Master's program with Lausanne opens up a wide range of professional careers. Naturally, the Joint Degree Master's program also grants eligibility to take the cantonal bar examination and opens the door to traditional legal careers in law firms, public administra-tion, courts, and companies, as well as to executive roles in business, culture, and politics. The additional linguis-tic expertise also improves students' employment oppor-tunities and paves the way to careers in which sound knowledge of specialist French is required. This is true of all areas of the federal administration (most notably, of course, in diplomacy) and the world of international organizations. In addition, conferral of a doctorate after the degree program opens the door to an academic career.

BerufsperspektivenDer gemeinsame Masterstudiengang mit Lausanne eröffnet ein breites Spektrum beruflicher Tätigkeiten. Selbstverständlich ermöglicht auch der Joint Degree Masterstudiengang den Zugang zur kantonalen Anwalts-prüfung und zu den klassischen juristischen Berufen in Anwaltschaft, öffentlicher Verwaltung, Gerichten und Unternehmen sowie zu den Stabsfunktionen in Wirt-schaft, Kultur und Politik. Darüber hinaus verbessert die sprachliche Zusatzkompetenz die Einstellungschancen und ebnet den Weg zu Berufen, in denen fachlich fun-dierte Französischkenntnisse erforderlich sind.
