Während ihres Aufenthalts als artist in residence im Museum Kunst der Westküste stieß die in Rom und Berlin lebende Künstlerin Susanne Kessler auf eine „Zeichnung“, hinter der sich eine spektakuläre Geschichte verbirgt: Die Odyssee des Vollschiff s „Susanna“ bei seiner Umsegelung von Kap Hoorn. Unter der Führung des Föhrer Kapitäns Christian Simon Jürgens (1875–1959) geriet der Dreimaster 1905 in 99 Tage anhaltende Stürme um Kap Hoorn. Die Fahrt gilt bis heute als der härteste, brutalste und tapferste Törn in der internationalen Seefahrtgeschichte. Ausgehend von der „Zeichnung“ entwarf Susanne Kessler die Rauminstallation Odissea. Im gleichnamigen Film wird das abstrakte Liniengefüge dem Gezeiten-wechsel ausgesetzt. Susanne Kesslers Modelle, Zeichnungen, Videos und Bildwerke, die den Werkprozess begleitet haben, verdeutlichen, dass die Geschichte universelle Gültigkeit besitzt und stellvertretend für unendlich viele leidvolle Irrfahrten in früheren und heutigen Zeiten steht.

During her stay as artist in residence at the Museum Kunst der Westküste, artist Susanne Kessler, who lives in Rome and Berlin, came across a “drawing” that has a spectacular story behind it: the odyssey of the full-rigged ship “Susanna” as it sailed around Cape Horn. Under the command of Föhr islander Captain Christian Simon Jürgens (1875–1959), in the year 1905 this three-master was caught in storms around Cape Horn that endured for 99 days. To the present day, the journey is regarded as the toughest, most brutal and courageous sailing trip in international nautical history. Starting out from the “drawing”, Susanne Kessler conceived the spatial installation Odissea. In a fi lm of the same name, an abstract constellation of lines is exposed to the turning of the tide. Susanne Kessler’s models, drawings, videos and sculptures accompanying the work process clarify the story’s universal validity; indeed, it can be seen as representative of an infi nite number of painful and wretched odysseys in former and present times.
