En suite to the highly acclaimed publications Artempo, In-Finitum, Academia, TRA, and Antoni Tapiès; the Axel & May Vervoordt Foundation presents Proportio. This catalogue devoted to the eponym exhibition, which will be featured during this year’s Venice Biennale of Contemporary Art, unravels the universal quest for proportions tangible through time in art, science, music and architecture. Proportio includes newly commissioned installations by contemporary artists such as Marina Abramovíc, Anish Kapoor, Massimo Bartolini, Rei Naito, Michaël Borremans, Ettore Spaletti, along with existing masterpieces by Ellsworth Kelly, Carl André and Sol Lewitt, as well as antiquities, Old Masters and antique architectural models.

Yuko Nasaka (°1938, Osaka) started to present her oil paintings and drawings when she was only in junior high school. Following these exhibitions, she was awarded several art prices and soon after joined the avant-garde Gutai movement as one of the few Japanese female artists. Nasaka exhibited her large works worldwide in several galleries and museums, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Whitestone Gallery, Ginza. She often used drills and potter’s wheels in order to create her trademark circular works; many of which are made from lacquer and resin, displaying vivid, endless colours. This publication comes out on the occasion of an exhibition devoted to her practice and organized by the Axel & May Vervoordt Foundation in the Spring of 2015.

Dominique Stroobant (°1947, Antwerp) is a Belgian artist living and working in Italy. Stroobant started his career carving stones and experimenting with lithophones. Together with painter Jef Verheyen he conceived marble works from the seventies, which he continues to this date. From the seventies onwards, Stroobant also became interested in the medium film and subsequently created cameras and recorders of various shapes and sizes. Throughout his early career, the artist recorded anti-authoritarian movements and victim memorials. Stroobant is particularly puzzled by the shapes of things that hint at infinity.

Silence – Slowness – Solitude brings together four decennia of Coeckelberghs’ artistic practice. The main core of the artist’s oeuvre comprises paintings, along with sculptural work and installations. This monograph shows the evolution over time in the use of materials, means, techniques and forms, and of one of the core question of Coeckelbergh’s practice: a research on the concept op space in art, whether it is expressed in a two or three-dimensional way, or in a four-dimensional way, physically and mentally.

Comics were Van de Moortel’s first love: his first drawings, his first stories; a dwelling of fantasies and a lack of reality: he devored them as a child. His first publications with MER. Paper Kunsthalle, the Cylinder Series, is not a real comic book series, but the idea is based on the structure of it. It fits perfectly with Van de Moortel’s work. The sketches, the colouring, the humour that feels close to the practice: it’s a work in itself and not just a representation of images. The artist prints one new Cylinder issue on the occasion of each new project or exhibition. Each cahier has a unique design and cover. Each will be published separately at first; becoming one book after 10 editions that will be published as a whole. Every edition is a new adventure having the same basic players, added, transformed. It’s one big playground: like a show. This is the sequel to Cylinder #5. It is the sixth issue in the Cylinder Series.

Peggy Wauters THE BIG ESCAPE

MER. Paper KunsthalleJanuary 2015ISBN 978 94 9177 574 1€ 45

Peggy Wauters (°1968, Aalst) once stated that she paints quicker than she talks about things. For her, painting is like language, like speech, a way of thinking. The exhibition The Big Escape, for which this publication comes out, displays Wauters’ work of the past ten years, comprising small (sometimes not even bigger than 4,5 x 4,5 cm) and larger paintings, drawings, collages and sculptures. Striking is the almost serene and obvious manner in which she demonstrates the soft cruelty of daily life through everyday situations and scenes. In a kaleidoscopic way, Wauters’ work provides alternative contents for banal situations, creating alienations of the things that move and shake us. The sublime and the abject are naturally and subtly intertwined. Her works are riddled with humour.

This publication has a foreword by Alain Liedts and is accompanied by a text and a poem by Inge Braeckman.

Creole & Vanities unravels the diversity in the work of painter Carole Vanderlinden. The publication highlights an oeuvre, which plays with pictural changes, methodical steps and the mixture of genres. Vanderlinden is especially interested in concepts of approaching and departing; which are present in several of her paintings. This monograph includes texts by curators Hans Theys and Philippe Van Cauteren, and by poet Inge Braeckman. The book comes out during the eponym show of Vanderlinden in Kristof De Clercq Gallery, Ghent, from March 8th til April 12th.

In C.STONE, the artist and authors deliver a kaleidoscopic image of tentative alternative understandings of social and individual phenomena. Art plays its role of catalyst and provocateur of complex human and creative processes. The place in which the book is set is the problematic border area of Mexico and Texas, USA, the goal of the publication is a state-of-the-art scanning of the attracting and repelling forces that appear between intellectual and sensual antipodes. The book’s leitmotif is the artist’s efforts to change the course of action and thought in the direction of mutual understanding.

MER. Paper KunsthalleOctober 2014ISBN 978 94 9177 571 0€ 34

design: Studio Luc Derycke29,5 x 19,7 cm / 56 pp / SC

Sébastien Capouet’s Palimpsest gathers a body of photographs taken between 2011 and 2014, in parallel with the artist’s pictorial practice. This object-book induces, via playful folds and successive intervals, rhythmic gestures in the reader. The principle is that of the palimpsest, in which successive strata echo both the different layers enveloping the characters staged in the photographs, and the deserted landscapes – sites of memory – in which they evolve. Within Sébastien Capouet’s oeuvre, the body of photographic images presents itself as a transitory, liminal space, as a condition for the abstraction of the painted canvas. The chosen abstraction allows the artist to concentrate the attention of the spectator on the processes at play. These processes of effacement, in his paintings just as much as in his images/photographs, depend less on subtraction than on additions, superimpositions and saturations.

Imagine a museum in which the portrait of Carlotta Valdes, an important prop in Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo, hangs on a wall next to the painted portrait of the title character of Otto Preminger’s Laura and opposite the uncanny portraits of the desired or murdered women in Fritz Lang’s Scarlet Street, George Cukor’s Gaslight, and Nicholas Ray’s Born to Be Bad. In an adjacent gallery, the visitor of this imaginary museum can contemplate the portraits of patriarchs that feature in films such as House of Strangers, Suspicion, Gilda, and Strangers on a Train. This is precisely the concept of this book. The Dark Galleries deals with American (and some British) films of the 1940s and 1950s, in which a painted portrait plays an important part in the plot or the mise-en-scène. Particularly noir crime thrillers, gothic melodramas, and ghost stories feature painted portraits that seem to have a magical power over their beholders. Apart from an extensive introductory essay, this museum guide presents more than eighty entries on the artistic and cinematic aspects of noir painted portraits.

Shooting Range draws the story of the use of film and photography during World War I. This was a time when both media were used as new means of mass propaganda. The book questions what exactly was shown and what was deliberately omitted for the public. Shooting Range takes the stance from the public view and sheds new light on the historical context in which these images emerged, and were used and reused as genuine weapons of war.

This publication accompanies the eponym exhibition held at the Antwerp FOMU, June 26 – November 11 2014.

design: Tankboys, Lorenzo Mason, Marco Campardo in conversation with Luc Derycke21 x 13 cm / 264 pp / SC / EN

REBELS REBEL is a chronological survey of activist art in New York from 1979 to 1989, reviewing the radical responses artists gave to social problems, especially the AIDS crisis, in the conservative political climate of their day. It presents activist art as a potent manifestation of public art, through which artists and art practice can shape and change society. The book is a tribute to art collectives who confronted society’s problems and what they saw as threats to the basic principles of democracy. Their story still stands today as an example of how a collective voice can rise above prejudice and inequality, overthrow injustice and make itself heard.

Adriaan Verwée (°1975) makes objects and installations that are caught in the middle ground between the literal and figural, between construction and image. It is as if that decision is still under consideration, or left hanging in the air. Yet many of Verwée’s objects appear to have a specific function, and as a result are an integral part of the here and now. The temporal and spatial character of his work is enhanced through the tension that the artist quite literally puts on his combinations of different objects: by giving gravity an active role, or by introducing elements that look incomplete or redundant. Additionally an enormous amount of attention is lavished upon certain materials and their relationships. This lends these objects an aesthetic clarity and quality, which in turn appears to completely contradict their suggested functionality. This artist book is published on the occasion of Verwée’s show held at Museum M, Leuven, from August 28th until November 2nd, 2014.

Under the thirty-year directorship of Robert Hoozee (1982–2012), the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent underwent a complete transformation. Hoozee’s multidisciplinary approach towards Belgian art from the period 1789–1950 was strongly reflected in the exhibitions created under his leadership. Acquisition highlights ranging from James Ensor, Fernand Khnopff, George Minne, Odilon Redon, Oskar Kokoschka and Erich Heckel to Raoul De Keyser illustrate Hoozee’s unrelenting pursuit of excellence, while in his exhibition policy he set new standards with the ground-breaking ‘Paris–Brussels’ (1997) and ‘British Vision’ (2007–08). In this commemorative album, influential international authors look back on this remarkable period in the museum’s history. Their contributions paint a kaleidoscopic picture of an extraordinary man who, at his untimely death in 2012, left behind a museum of international repute.

No Obstacle, No Image makes reference to the fact that the majority of Bellinkx’ projects are extremely hard to realize. Whenever he presents his drawings and models, the public is always surprized to learn that these are the precursors of still to develop projects. Bellinkx always pushes the limits of what can safely be realized: the path along the realisation of his projects is covered with potential failures and tricky obstacles. These obstacles are a necessity in his work. This publication covers the last ten years of Bellinkx’ artistic practice, and offers insights into his preliminary works, his drawings, models and final realisations.

AsaMERNovember 2014 ISBN 978 94 9177 562 8€ 29,50

The Canadian artist Royden Rabinowitch (°1943, Canada) is one of the most important sculptors of the late twentieth century. His oeuvre addresses questions that modernist sculpture was unable to answer and takes up a position in an area of the experience of space that is occupied today, above all, by installation art, which is perceived by the public as a topical medium. Rabinowitch understands the history of sculpture in the late nineteenth and the early twentieth century as “a constant attempt to treat space less vaguely, less continuously, less abstractly, i.e. to use a more and more discrete, concrete treatment, thus enacting judgments on the increasingly abstract treatment of things generally.”

Fostering a cross-pollination between the digital and the physical, Nick Ervinck (°1981, Belgium) explores the boundaries between various media. As a pioneer in 3D-printed sculptures the artist takes a vanguard position in the field of digital technology while at the same time his works hold numerous references to the tradition of sculpture and architecture. This first monograph focuses on this tension between innovation and tradition and gives an inside to the artist’s abundant archive. The concepts body, building, history and nature that are crucial for the artist’s oeuvre, are the leitmotifs in the book. The authors explore Ervinck’s work from different angles while a great quantity of images show the genesis of form, some of his most succesfull works and futuristic ideas that till this day were impossible to create.

This monograph features a new body of work, which artist Ida Ekblad realized for a solo exhibition at De Vleeshal in Middelburg, The Netherlands (November – December 2013). Fundamental in Ekblad’s work is an interest in the historical perspective as a central element of our time. Through combining historical perspective in a contemporary cultural and social element, Ekblad gives an answer to the superficial connotation of a contemporary society based on speed and consumption. The use of discarded material to realize assemblages is a translation of the recuperation of the element of history to embrace a more complex relationship between art and time.

Bart Van Dijck (°1974, Belgium) creates video’s, drawings, sculptures, installations and documentaries. His work, a constant exploration of identity, originates out of a fascination for domestic and foreign folklore. His research often involves youth- and subcultures, which are known for their unique visual cultures which allow for diverse and at times conflicting influences to unite naturally. Van Dijck recognizes in these subcultures a contemporary counterpart to traditional folklore. Through his work he analyses how symbolism and rituals determine the identity of such groups. Van Dijck also focuses closely on the subconsciousness. He wants to reach out to the invisible and make it tangible for the audience. For his first solo show at De Warande the artist presents a new video on traditions and folklore in Belgium.

Walden & other suspisions presents Clarysse’s artistic output of the past seven years, in which concepts of identity construction, communication and non-communication are key, along with the drives and aspirations of the condition humaine. Clarysse’s figurative paintings display a layered, hybrid imagery that questions and researches the ambiguity proper to human nature. His paintings tease and confuse, destabilize well-known images and themes, giving them power and force. Thus an oeuvre is created that is both playful and serious, clear and equivocal, subdued and intense.

The intention is to reflect on iii’s particular approach of starting from scratch that involves designing and constructing a medium from the ground up, as well as notions of cultural agency, identity and negotiation that apply when redefining the terms of relationships with audiences and cultural institutions. Since iii stems from an interdisciplinary approach to art and technology that has a strong and unique history in The Netherlands, the publication also intends to offer a reflection on this unique background, tracing lines of thought behind the development of current practices and offering a window on the local discourse to a global community of artists, researchers and cultural operators.

This publication includes six fictive conversations on the dynamism and processes that are at the basis of the actor’s dramaturgy. These conversations never really took place – or at least not outside the author’s own thinking process. The interlocutors are not based on real people. They are not psychologically realistic characters, but ‘voices’ that speak and argue from the perspective of their specific functions within the field of theatre. They are perspectives and functions that the author himself has experienced and through which he has reasoned throughout his whole professional life, being an actor, a director, a teacher and still considering himself to be a student. The dialogue format offers an opportunity to engage in a dynamic and open ‘conversation’ with these different functions and with the reader of the text, without any hierarchy among them. Complementary to the text, there are photos and a DVD with images of the author’s work.

Ghent-based international art space Zebrastraat shelters several functions, next to a residence and a centre for the local economy. The building plays a pivotal role in the research and promotion of contemporary art, with a strong emphasis on the interaction between technological and artistic research. To exhibit this ongoing practice Zebrastraat established the Update biennial, paired with the New Technological Art Award (NTAA). The latter offers artists the possibility to show their work in a valuable context. After a call for papers a selection of 21 works was made out of over 350 submissions, selected by an international jury under the supervision of curator Isolde De Buck. During the exhibition (from November 8th – 23rd 2014) these new works were displayed in dialogue with the work of settled artists and next to the presentation of recent technological discoveries.

design: Dimitri Jeannottat & Visionandfactory 23,5 x 17 cm / 384 pp / SC / EN

Ever since its foundation in 1990, design studio Visionandfactory has always played a prominent role in the Belgian and international graphic design scene. The studio’s key figure is Hugo Puttaert, designer, professor, editor, publisher and one of the sector’s movers and shakers. Instead of a complete overview, this book offers a selection, a kaleidoscopic view of Visionandfactory’s multifaceted output. The selected work is contextualised with texts by Rick Poynor and Steven Cleeren offering insight into the studio’s history and work processes as well as into Hugo Puttaert’s vision on design as a discipline and the social responsibility of the designer. With a split-fountain cover that changes colour when heated and hundreds of colour pages, this book provides a striking illustration of the credo that is so central to his vision, ‘Think in Colour’.
