Modified insert for pressure decomposition bombs for trace element analysis with low contamination

Our efforts towards a reliable volumetric micromethod (0.025 to 0.1 mmole) of tungstate have failed. We have examined various methods reported in the literature with the following results:
1. Potentiometric titration vs. lead. Hansen and Ruzicka [3] have shown titration curves for the determination of tungstate vs. lead, using a lead ion-selective electrode (ISE). However, no quantitative data were given. Recently in this journal Wfinsch and Ffihrer [7] noted that the potentiometric titration of tungstate vs. lead, using a lead ISE, requires a very closely controlled pH of 7.3. We have not been able to reproduce their results. Chao and Cheng [2] found that tungstate could not be quantitatively precipitated with lead unless a sufficient amount

of molybdate was present. Thus, coprecipitation seems to pro- mote the precipitation of tungstate. However, the precision and accuracy obtained was not acceptable.
2. Potentiometrie titration vs. silver. Shivahare [5] reported the potentiometric titration of tungstate vs. silver using a silver sensing electrode, in the pH range of 6 to 7.6. In this range, as well as in the presence of various buffers, in aqueous solution and using a silver/sulfide ISE, we could not detect any endpoint break whatsoever. In 80% methanolic solution a very poor (shallow) break was obtained which was not analytically useful.
3. Acidimetric titration after complexation. Sinclair [6] reported an acidimetric titration of tungstate, after complexation with mannitol. This method did not yield reliable and reproducible results on the microscale.
4. Indirect E D T A method. The direct titration of tungstate vs. EDTA is not feasible. Some indirect methods have, however, been reported. Popova and Seraya [4] precipitated tungstate using lead acetate. The excess lead was titrated with EDTA using xylenol orange, without separation of the lead tungstate. A similar method was reported by Bourvet et al. [1]. We have found fading endpoints with consequent unreliable results even when the lead tungstate was separated by filtration. In view of the previously mentioned results of Chao and Cheng [2] this is not surprising.
We conclude that titrimetric methods for tungstate must be used with extreme caution, if at all.
