12 Dhul Hijjah

The Islaamic calendar (Hijri calendar) has twelve months. The last month of the Islaamic year is Dhul Hijjah.

During this month, many Muslims perform Hajj, the pilgrimage to the Kabah (which is in Makkah, Saudi Arabia).

The word for day in Arabic is yawm. Yawmul Arafah is the day of Arafah. Arafah is the mountain where pilgrims gather on the ninth day of Dhul Hijjah during Hajj to pray and supplicate (ask things of Allaah).

For those who do not make Hajj, it is highly recommended to fast on this day.

The Prophet (salla Allaahu alayhi wa sallam) was asked about fasting on Yawmul Arafah and he said it expiates the sins of the past year and the coming year.

Eid ul Adhaa is the tenth day of Dhul Hijjah. It marks the end of the major rites (activities) of the Hajj. This day is also known as the day of An Nahr (Slaughtering).

The Prophet (salla Allaahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

“The greatest day of the Hajj is the Day of An Nahr.”

On this day, Muslims slaughter a camel, cow, sheep, or goat.

We slaughter an animal (after the Eid Prayer) if we are able to and we eat and drink. The days of eating and drinking also include the three days after Eid ul Adhaa, These are known as the days of Tashreeq.

Have a bath in the morning on the Eid Day 1.

Wear your best clothes 2.

Pray Eid prayer at the Musallaah 3.

Say the Takbeer loudly and continue Takbeer till the end of the 4.

Muslims slaughter to commemorate the sacrifice of Ibraheem (alayhi salaam). Allaah had ordered Ibraheem (alayhi salaam) to sacrifice his firstborn son, Ismaeel (alayhi salaam). Ibraheem (alayhi salaam), started to obey his Lord in this command and Allaah gave Ibraheem (alayhi sallam) a ram to slaughter in place of his son.
