It’s atmos- phere and the people that are different. It’s like a music festival where the sound is made by engines and tyres, and the audience and musicians are the same people. Sponsors and staff behave like friends and relatives of the participants. Of course it’s still a competition, and competitors have to stretch themselves to the limit if they want to succeed. Every point counts and every team member will do his or her best to win for their team. But a stroll and a chat in the pits will show that even teams who don’t stand a chance of winning are all fired up. Teams that give their very best to win will gracefully acknowledge if someone else is even better. And everybody is always willing to share a tool or a lend helping hand for less well-off or inex- perienced teams. It is fitting that the whole show should be run by an army of volunteers. It is sheer enthusiasm that drives the Hockenheim event, and success depends on overcoming selfishness and sharing with others. And no matter who gets the most points – everyone’s a winner in the end. This is the same principle that has been the essence of the VDI for more than 150 years. And it is for this reason that we are the competition’s spiritual sponsor, and why we are so proud that we helped it come into being. We relish our participation more and more each year.
