ZUM STREICHQUINTETT VON FRANZ SCHUBERT D 956 – OP. POSTH. 163

THOUGHTS ON THE TOPIC OF THE STRING QUINTET BY FRANZ SCHUBERT D 956 – OP. POSTH. 163

“Since the invention of musical notation we have had access to composed sound in two physical formats: as written notes and as played music. (…) Since the invention of the gramophone record a strong third factor has thrust itself between written music and sound, namely the interpretation.” 1

Wherein the interpreter’s objective is solely and only to convey the music “in its innermost existence”2

as an audible chronologically linked sound. The bases of which are watchful awareness of form, emotional sensitivity to sound in reference to the harmony as well as the mastery of musical technique and dynamic-dramatic performance, without which one may not presume to come close to the greatest musical masterpieces. An authoritative interpretation of the string quintet D 956, Schubert’s instrumental swan-song and indisputable peak of its genre, demands a profound, innovative craftsmanship from its interpreters; quite simply because for a long time now the work has only been available in its somewhat dubious printed format owing to the fact that the manuscript itself has been untraceable since the first edition listed as “Grand Quintuor” was published in 1853 by C.A. Spina in Vienna. Numerous obvious inconsistencies and inadvertent mistakes that Schubert was not able to correct or clarify are curiously enough included even in the newest so-called original text. In particular it seems, when compared with other of Schubert’s later works, that the unknown copyist cluttered the musical notation, particularly the last movement of the quintet, arbitrarily and profusely with performing instructions for the dynamics.

It’s remarkable that this piece, so often played, often thrown together in ad hoc manner, often simply with a star guest as second cello, has despite all the inconsistencies held on to its high status. I have used this experience as a golden opportunity to think it through over many years and “listen to the message” of this definitive masterpiece. The balance of the nuances, the constant and still existent doubts as to the authenticity of the handed-down score, the discarding or adding of playing directions, the formulation of what has not been written out, even the “learning from partners in crime” – and finally the constant reviewing in concert – have been a passionate musical adventure, which has finally found its conclusion with this recording, something that I have had to wait such a long time for. My sincere thanks go to my friends from the 3G Quartet; this recording was only possible thanks to the unconditional artistic commitment of this quartet spanning three generations.

Walter Grimmer

ADAGIO FOR STRING QUINTET PHILIPPE RACINE (2018/2019)To my dear friend Walter, in recognition of his 80 yearsI have composed this Adagio for string quintet at the request of my friend Walter Grimmer; it should be played in concert before the great string quintet in C by Schubert. What a story! What kind of hillock have I created next to the Himalaya of chamber music? Well, I have written a type of music with which I have striven to stay true to my own self. And yet the piece begins with Schubert’s closing trills for the two cellos and repeatedly a C major chord pops up, mostly delicately, but just once entirely explicitly. And as a reference to the Adagio from the great Austrian, I’ve

A blatant example of the doubtful authenticity of the traditional text is that at the conclusion of the exposition of the first movement, the last dominant seventh chord only makes sense if it is repeated. In no way is it a “signpost” to the initial key of the development. Seen from a technical angle it should be played recognisably as “first departure” and the following bar as “second departure”. A further example that springs to mind is the watering down of the form of the third movement and its trio. Its traditional form again needs a new reading, the coda of course only to be played once – the interpreter really has to metamorphose into a true exponent of Schubert’s intentions. Curiously enough no published text on the works of Schubert has as yet addressed this issue. Thanks to the harmonious and deeply emotive content, not least also to the temporal enlargement, the “epic character”3 of his last works, Schubert seems to break the “protective mould”4 of the sonata-allegro form. In each of the three opening movements the long and all-consuming rise and fall of the notes serves to remind the listener of a leitmotiv. Quite different from the concluding unison C of the last movement, which must surely be intended to symbolise the falling silent of the bottomless deep through its seemingly endless descent? The alternating functions and positioning of the five string instruments – even the viola occasionally becomes the foundation instrument – is one of the superb aspects of this quintet; quite possibly the composer sought to develop further the enhanced bass aura of his “Trout” Quintet D 667. Each of the many existing quintets with two cellos, from Boccherini to Onslow, has gone its own way; none of them have anything in common with Schubert’s visionary essay at almost symphony-like chamber music. 3 Ernest Ansermet, 1961. of works as selected by his friend Eduard Brunner (1939–2017), and is as such a distant echo of the festival “Zeitgenuss 2017” (Moments of delight, music of our times) in Karlsruhe. Since 1965 Walter Grimmer has taught more than two generations of young cellists, firstly at the Academy of Arts in Berne, then from 2002 at the Zurich Academy for Arts. He edited the musical testament of his teacher Maurice Gendron “Kunst des Cellospiels” (the art of playing the cello) and also Gendron’s concert version of “Pezzo capriccioso” by Tchaikovsky.

3Gdreigenerationenquartett The 3G Quartet was set up in 2014 for a series of concerts and the recording of the two string quartets by Klaus Huber (www.streiffzug.com). Overwhelming reactions (Coup de cœur Charles Cros) inspired the four musicians to continue with further favourite projects: the quartets by Heidi Baader-Nobs as well as works by Schumann, Haydn, Mozart. The recording of the quintets by Franz Schubert and Philippe Racine completes a circle of their activity. www.dreigenerationenquartett.ch und www.streiffzug.com

PHILIPPE RACINEBorn in Switzerland in 1958, flutist Philippe Racine studied music in Basel and Paris. He has established a reputation as a brilliant and innovative flutist among music lovers of the traditional classical repertoire, and is also an intense and dynamic advocate of contemporary music. He has also dedicated himself to improvised music, pop and Jazz-Rock with much success.

given the second cello some repeated pizzicati to play. In addition this piece gives the instruments plenty of opportunity to be song-like and yet to create a throbbing rhythm. And as a gift for my friend who gave me this commission: a short cadenza from the second cello, followed by a coda in which both violins repeat the opening pizzicati two octaves higher. And the piece ends with a long deep C note, which should serve to introduce the beginning of the Schubert. And now you enter into a totally different dimension...

WALTER GRIMMER In 1965, the doyen amongst Swiss cellists, WALTER GRIMMER was appointed by Paul Klecki as soloist with the Berne Symphony Orchestra. In the same year he was appointed to the professorial chair for cello in the Music Conservatory, Berne, Switzerland’s capital city. He was a founding member of the Camerata Bern and the legendary Berne String Quartet; famed for numerous world premieres of the works of Huber, Lachenmann, Lehmann, Ferneyhough, Rihm, Holliger and countless others. As a member of the Arion-Trio with Igor Ozim and Ilse von Alpenheim he both played and recorded the complete works of Mozart and Schubert for this scoring whilst at the same time and over a period of twenty years playing in duet with the pianist Stefan Fahrni. As such he is responsible for bringing to the attention of Swiss audiences the works of ground-breaking composers with premiere performances of recitals from amongst others Isang Yun and Witold Lutoslawski. Thanks to suggestions he has made to their composers, countless works for the cello have been written, including “Die Seele muss von Reittier steigen” (The soul must rise from its mount) by Klaus Huber (2002). Together with Egidius Streiff he founded in Basel the 3-Generation Quartet with the aim of recording both of his string quartets. In 2019 his new recording of the works of Isang Yun was released; this recording consists

A sizable discography testifies to his great versatility and exceptional talent. Racine is now more and more acknowledged as a composer. Famous musicians play his music in renowned places: Lucerne Festival, Tonhalle Zurich, Stadtcasino Basel, Paris, London etc. Racine’s music is an expression of a great liberty in form and language. He has written chamber music, vocal and choral works as well as symphonic pieces (with and without soloists). Philippe Racine is also a highly estimated and sought after pedagogue at the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste.

EGIDIUS STREIFF Egidius Streiff studied with Hansheinz Schneeberger and György Kurtàg and established himself since as an exciting performer in mostly contemporary music. He is dedicatee of violin concerti by Wang Xilin, Lothar Voigtländer, Harry Crowl and Robert HP Platz. He has initiated pioneering cultural project in Mongolia, and North Korea and his research on Eugène Ysaÿe, Adolf Busch und Max Reger is well documented on CD and DVD (BBC DVD of the year 2018. Egidius Streiff is teaching on the Musik-Akademie Basel.

LISA RIEDERRussian-Swiss violinist Lisa Rieder has been praised by several well-known music personalities for the refinement and purity of her playing, her technical proficiency and her intellectual curiosity. She has built

up an outstanding reputation in Switzerland, in Italy, in Austria, in Germany and in France. She studied with Raphaël Oleg in Basel, with Dora Schwarzberg in Vienna and is now coached personally by Viktoria Mullova. Lisa was for three years the nominated artist for the Notenstein La Roche Privatbank. She regularly appears as soloist with the Basel Symphony Orchestra, the United Nations Orchestra and the Baden-Baden Philharmonic.

MARIANA DOUGHTY Mariana Doughty was born in Cornwall and educated at Chethams School of Music in Manchester and Jesus College Cambridge. After the Guildhall, London, she completed her studies at the Musik-Akademie Basel where she has taught viola since 2001. As solo-violist of Kammerorchester Basel, Mariana Doughty enjoys the contrast of teaching, of orchestra and chamber music (Ensemble van der Waals, 3G Quartet) and performing music of today or the last five centuries.

SÉBASTIEN SINGER After sixteen years of an international career with the famous Swiss Piano Trio, Sébastien Singer has chosen to devote himself more to recitals. Among his favourite partners are guitarist André Fischer, with whom he has been playing as a duo since he was a teenager, pianists Brigitte Meyer, Marc Pantillon and Paul Coker, as well as organist Guy Bovet, with whom he enjoys a complicity that goes far beyond music. A passionate chamber musician, Sébastien Singer has played with eminent musicians such as Pierre Amoyal, Daniel Zisman, Gyula Stuller, Paul Neubauer, Steven Dann, Fabio Di Càsola, James Campbell and many others.
