Education: Bachelor of Economics & Political Science from Panjab

Occupation:  Founder, Owner, Chairman and CEO of Bharti Airtel. 

Net worth:  US$7.8 billion (2010)

ABOUT CAREER 

In 1976 Sunil got together with his friend and startedmanufacturing and selling components of bicycle withborrowed capital of Rs.20,000 at Ludhiana city,

But by 1979, he realized that the potential to scale up thisbusiness was limited.

So in 1980 he sold his bicycle parts factories .

After that he moved to Mumbai and the next chapter in theMittal saga was of making money out of recurrent power cutsin Delhi he started import and selling and distribution of 

generators in New Delhi and Mumbai. By 1982, Mittal had started a full-fledged business selling

portable generators for suzuki motor’s imported from Japanand that gave him the chance to involve himself in activitieslike marketing and advertising.

Things went smoothly until the government banned the

import of generators as two Indian companies were awarded

licenses to manufacture generators locally. Thereafter during a trip to Taiwan he came across electronic

push button phones. He sensed an opportunity, as only bulky

rotary phones were available to Indian users that time.

And thus Sunil Mittal was one of the first Indianentrepreneurs to identify the mobile telecom business as a

major business area.

In 1982, he Formed Bharti Teletech Ltd and started

manufacturing push button phones in technical tie-up with

Siemens AG of Germany.

In Sunil Mittal life turning point came in 1992 when the

Indian government was awarding licenses for mobile phone

services for the first time.

In 1995, Bharti Cellular Limited (BCL) was formed to

offer cellular services under the brand name Airtel. After establishing Bharti Airtel as the largest telecom

service provider among the private telecom operators inIndia, Sunil Mittal has turned his attention to newopportunities such as Retail, Agri-exports and Life

Insurance. In 2001, the company entered into a joint venture with

Singapore Telecom International for a $650-millionsubmarine cable project, the countries first everundersea cable link connecting Chennai in India andSingapore.

In July 2006, he attracted many key executives fromReliance ADAG, NIS Sparta and created Bharti Comtel

Formed a retail joint venture with Wal-Mart Stores Inc,

U.S. based world's largest retailer in November 2006.
