    THE GERMAN DAMASCUS

    HISTORY

There are regions and cities that culti-vate a legacy: mechanical watches inGlashtte, lace in Brussels, red wine inBordeaux. Suhls legacy is guns since1490 according to the latest ndings. And the knowledge of making neguns is deeply rooted in the collectivememory of the people of this region.

The old city of Suhl is the gateway tothe Thuringian Forest. Iron ore and thewood used to re the ironworks are eas-ily accessible here. Legend has it thatgunsmiths from Nuremberg recognised

Damascus gunsmiths. They elevatedengraving and manufacturing to highart in the Arabian world.

In Suhl there was always a demarcationbetween military production and hunt-ing guns. The ne gun remained thepreserve of hunting richly adornedand elegantly designed.

the advantages of the location and set-tled here. At the time guns for defenceand protection were produced. Sincethe Middle Ages Suhl has been lookedupon as the gunmaking city of Europe.

Nevertheless the arts and crafts werenot neglected in Suhl: the ries wereengraved on all sides and beautifullynished. The city soon earned the nick-name German Damascus the gunswere richly decorated. The people of Suhl are proud of this name, because itbrings to mind the great tradition of the

Suhl ries, 17th and 18th century.

    THE FORMATIVE YEARS

    HISTORY

The industrial revolution made Germanythe third largest industrial nation inthe world. And in Suhl the craftmansworkshops turned into manufactoriesand later into gun factories. The Mer-kel brothers wanted to be part of theunprecedented transformation of thenational economy at the turn of the19th Century.

Albert Oskar, Gebhard and Karl PaulMerkel came from a long line of engrav-ers, stock makers and gunsmiths anda family with many children. All elevensons of the family found their way intothe gunmaking trade. Albert Oskar andGebhard Merkel were master gunsmiths.Karl Paul Merkel followed as a masterstock maker they founded a trading

turned some gunmakers into indus-trial enterprises, the Merkel workforcehardly ever rose above 350 employeesduring the war. Instead, the export-ori-ented company twice lost its importantforeign markets.

From the outset the Merkels pinnedtheir hopes on innovation. The Bockover-and-under gun with the two bar-rels lying upon one another originatesfrom Suhl, and Merkel registered theBock as a trademark. Merkel revolu-tionised sporting shooting and huntingwith these ries.

During the formative years of thecompany the manufacture of hunting, sporting and luxury guns was boomingin the old gunmaking town. The me-chanical design of these guns was moreelaborate and technically variable thanmilitary ries. Merkel was committedto the ne gun at all times; even inwartime it was never more than a partssupplier for military production. Whilethe two great wars of the 20th Century

    BETWEEN THE WARS

    HISTORY

From a business point of view, theFirst World War was a huge setbackfor Merkel. Merkelesque aesthetic isnot sought after on the battleeld. Thecompany renowned for luxury andperfectly balanced hunting ries lostmany foreign markets. Nevertheless, shortly after the war, Merkel ries wereagain being exported to 28 countriesaround the world, although the compa-ny did not fully recover from the conse-quences of the war until 1924. In 1931Merkel registered a trademark: fromnow on the rights to the term Bock(over-and-under) for hunting and sport-ing ries were reserved for Merkel.

The ingenious gun designer GebhardMerkel died in 1933. He did not havethe opportunity to witness one of thecompanys greatest triumphs. In 1937Merkel was awarded the Grand Prix

at the World Exhibition in Paris for itsrange of hunting ries. The WorldExhibition, which was held under themotto Art and technology applied inmodern life, honoured the aestheticof the Merkel product range.

In 1938 the second generation as-sumed ofce: Ernst Merkel togetherwith the adept businessman Adolf Schade, son-in-law of Karl-Paul Mer-kel, took over the management of thecompany. The Grand Prix boosted theexport business. The companys orderbooks include the names of crownedheads of state, diplomats, mahara-

jahs and industrial magnates. Famousbig game hunters and explorers alsoordered their ries from Merkel in Suhl.Even the world boxing champion MaxSchmeling favoured hunting ries madeby Merkel

    WAR AND THE POSTWAR PERIOD

    HISTORY

Before the start of Second World Warthe company ran its own sales ofces inmany countries around the world. Mer-kels sales network spread from Argen-tina to Bessarabia to France, Greece,Norway, Rumania, Spain and the USA.This network was again broken up bythe Second World War.

Hunting guns played a subordinate rolein the war production from 1939. Merkelbecame a parts supplier for carburettorengines, carbines and rangenders andthe number of employees rose to 350in peak periods. Even in the anti-trainingatmosphere of wartime Germany, theMerkel company took the initiative torestructure the job specications of thegunmaking trades, thereby ensuring thecontinuation of handcrafted gunmaking.

The war ended in Suhl on 3 April 1945at 8.30 in the morning of all the factoriesin the city, only Merkel was to escape dis-mantlement. The good reputation of theprecious hunting guns spared Merkelthis fate the machine workshops, whichwere hi-tech for the time, were kept inSuhl.

By the end of 1945 hunting guns werebeing manufactured again; by 1947almost 700 ries had been sent toEastern Europe as reparation payments.Merkel developed into a showcasecompany of the German DemocraticRepublic.

The dispossession of the founding fami-lies followed in 1948 under disastrousconditions, the descendants of theMerkels lost everything to Socialism;everything the brothers has built up andthe second generation had developed. In 1952 the state-owned companyagain had 200 employees manufactur-ing hunting guns. The company wasintegrated into a state combine, butthe brand and the products remainedindependent.

In 1953 the GDR government presentedMerkel hunting ries to the two mostpowerful men on earth at that time,Dwight D. Eisenhower and Nikita S.Chruschtschow. And in 1963 the rstman in space, the cosmonaut JuriGagarin, was honoured with a MerkelDrilling. Postwar production at Merkel.

THE GERMAN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC AND REUNIFICATION

    HISTORY

The socialist workers and farmers statecultivated its export hit. In the 1970s arange of luxury guns was developed andsold around the world. The gun cardarchives include the names of illustriouspersonalities such as Gamal Abdel Nasser,

Josip Brosz Tito and Mao Tse Tung.Even Franz Josef Strau, the BavarianMinister President and enthusiastic hunter, ordered his ries from Suhl. Between1945 and 1987, production of Merkelover-and-under guns alone reached150,000. The GDR celebrated the successof Merkel ries with a set of specialpostage stamps.

With hunting and sporting gun produc-tion ourishing after the war, Suhlbecame an important sports shootingcentre. Around 100,000 visitors came toThuringia for the world championshipsin 1986. For a few days the city with along tradition of making rearms wasthe undisputed centre of world shoot-

ing sports. In his enthusiasm for theMerkel product range, the Mexicanpresident of the International ShootingSport Federation, Olegario Vzquez

Raa, proclaimed: I think these are themost perfect hunting ries in the world. He thought the Merkel over-and-undershotgun to be, the queen of huntingries. And he should know not onlydid Vzquez Raa hold the highest sports

shooting ofce in the world, he was alsoworld famous as a practicing trick shotartist. Between 1954 and 1989 sportingshooters using Merkel ries won 45 titlesat world and European championships.

In 1989 the German Democratic Repub-lic came to end the revolution camefrom below. It was unprecedented in itscourageousness and its bloodlessness. With the slogan We are the nation, the people of the GDR freed themselvesfrom the ruling powers.

Reunication was accompanied byconsiderable turmoil many jobs werelost in Suhl. Nevertheless, the Suhlcombine remained the largest producer

of hunting guns in Europe. This is wherethe coveted Merkel ries were manufac-tured however, they were still at thetechnical level of the 1950s.

    THE TECHNOLOGICAL BREAKTHROUGH

    HISTORY

Uncertain ownership status accompa-nied Merkel to the end of the millen-nium then the traditional brand foundits feet again. Investors provided thebacking which laid the foundations fornew products and the continuation of the Suhl gunmaking tradition.

At the time of the change it becameclear that there would be no futurewithout maintaining the values of thepast. Industrial precision cannot existwithout handcraft skills. Merkel wasalways and remains today a major pro-moter of the different professions of thegunmaking art because the companyknows, needs and fosters its roots andskills. Merkel is very aware of the herit-age of Suhl gunmaking.

The last great manufacturer of the oldgunmaking town still sees itself as amanufactory in the image of the Merkelbrothers. The Merkels were children of the Industrial Revolution and under-stood how to adapt to these enormousleaps in technology. Despite the ma-chinery, which was hi-tech at the time, they preserved the individual and hand-

crafted character of their ries. As earlyas the mid 1990s, the complete rangeof Merkel hunting guns underwentcareful reengineering. Where technicaladvancement increased the safety of the riemen, it was used. Where state-of-the-art technology improved theprecision and prolonged the service life

of a rie, it was applied.

The visual appearance of a Merkel 303made in 1924 differs only in detailsfrom a modern 303 over-and-undershotgun. And in 1924, as in 2008, thesewonderful hunting guns were at the cut-ting edge of gun technology.

From the outset the Merkel brand wascharacterised by the work of speciallytrained craftsmen; by employees whoknow how to make a gunlock with onlysimple tools and without machines. Andthis, although they know how to handlecomputer-controlled machines and themost up-to-date surface nishing sys-tems. Technology by tradition.

    13MERKEL TODAY

    HISTORY

Merkels only production site is in Suhl we view the location as a guaranteeof quality that is recognised in manycountries around the world. The Suhlmanufactory is an exceptional combina-tion of hunting gun manufacturing andhigh-tech forging. Merkel combinesthe traditional manufacturing methods

of handcrafted hunting guns with thehighest standards of quality and safety all achieved in what is, for this dayand age, an unusually deep in-houserange of manufacture, from cold forgedbarrels to hand engraving. With everypart of a Merkel gun, careful consid-eration is given to whether, from thecustomers point of view, it should behandmade or machine produced.

Today Merkel exports to more than40 countries all over the world and hasclose to 200 employees each one ahighly qualied specialist. They oftencome from families that have worked inthe gunmaking trade for generations. They bring to us the manufacturingskills and expertise to nd unusual solu-tions. Merkel employees dene them-selves and their work on the basis of

the long tradition of Suhl gunsmithing.Merkel is one of the very few factoriesthat can manufacture both modernrearms and handcrafted hunting guns.No matter which category a customerchooses, a Merkel carries the Suhlgenes: reverence to and the heritage of the German Damascus. And this has its

    own basic principles.

MERKEL TOP-DOWN: Merkelguns offer the customer the powerreserves of the unique Merkel top-downprinciple. This means that the highestcalibre of every gun class denes thebreech of all the underlying versions. The breech of the Africa side-by-siderie thus sets the standard for all theother side-by-side guns.

STEEL ON STEEL: With Merkellocking mechanisms, the principleapplies that steel is always locked onsteel.

HANDED-DOWN QUALITY: Wehave mastered the traditional manu-facturing methods, which even todayproduce unequalled quality we hand

THE IDEA OF THE MERKEL LOOP

    PHILOSOPHY

The strip of the saxonian mathemati-cian and topologist, August FerdinandMbius, symbolises Merkel loop.Mbius was a contemporary of theMerkel brothers. In 1858 Mbius stucktogether the two ends of a paper stripthat had been turned through 180degrees and determined that this strip

could not be cut into two strips along

its length. Instead of falling into twoparts, the result was one long strip. M-bius loaned his insight to Merkel. Theworld of Merkel hunting guns equatesto that of the strip twisted to make aloop the Merkel loop that apparentlyhas two sides (Meisterstck and MEM),but which in fact only has one surface

    (Suhl).

MEM:Floral motif Modern hunting guns: cuttingedge technology with the cultural genesof the Suhl gunmaking art. This is MEM Merkel Engineered Manufacturing. The oral motif symbolises this category.

MEISTERSTCK:Arabesque Traditional hunting guns: the sym-bol of the Merkel Meisterstck is the clas-sical Arabesque, the traditional engravingon hunting ries. Arabesques are artisti-cally stylised tendrils.

At Merkel the world of hunting guns isdivided into two. Traditional, handcraft-ed works of art can be found here aswell as modern hunting guns producedby contemporary methods. Merkel isone of the few manufacturers in theworld that can produce both catego-ries. On the one hand the Meisterstck,

the largely handcrafted rie, manufac-tured according to concepts that haveapplied in the old gunmaking town of Suhl for centuries. The name of theseicons of handmade guns is inspiredGebhard Merkels original drilling 1.4,which was named the Meisterstck.

Merkel Engineered Manufacturing high-tech in combination with engi-neering expertise and Suhl gunmakingknow-how. Every MEM from Merkel isbased on the knowledge and the hunt-ing cultural genes of the old gunmakingtown, realised with state-of-the-art tech-nology and the most modern material.

It is our gunmakers, the guardians of Meisterstck and MEM guns, who makesure that no soulless industrial productsleave the Merkel manufactory.

This rst Meisterstck in its time atechnologically groundbreaking drilling is the godfather of the whole class of traditional hunting ries that are hand-made in our manufactory.

It in its chequered history, the gun-making town of Suhl has always been

able to draw its strength and ideas fornew products from the rich heritage of rearms expertise of the region. This issymbolised by the MEM hunting guncategory. These three letters are doublecoded: on the one hand the mem is theart term for the culture gene i.e. thehereditary aspects of cultural identity. On the other hand, MEM stands for

    THE ESSENCE OF THE MANUFACTORY

    MANUFACTORY

The term manufactory originatesfrom the time the Merkel brothersfounded their company. From thebeginning, the manufactory combinedtraditional manual skills with modernindustrial production methods.

The Merkels were children of the In-dustrial Revolution but they were alsocraftsmen. And thus they knew how tocombine machine work and handworkmost effectively. Merkel has preservedthis knowledge. Even MEM ries, with

their high proportion of machine work, are nevertheless individually manufac-tured products, in which gunmakersskills are paired with engineeringtechnology. They are manufactured inthe same self-conception and with the

same care as Meisterstcke very oftenon the same machines and by the samepeople. The manufactory is a living organismand the nished goods are products of the experience, the skill and (even if it

sounds overstated) the pride of thosethat manufacture them. This applies

just as much to a modern Merkel rie of the MEM category as to a traditionallymanufactured Meisterstck.

    MORE THAN JUST PURE HANDWORK

    MANUFACTORY

Merkel was always a promoter of thegunmaking handcraft that is still thecase today. And of course we hold inhigh regard purely handmade huntingguns, made from solid metal, that donot use any industrially produced parts. But we also know the technologicallimits of these guns.

Merkel manufacturing goes one stepbeyond the boundaries of handwork.Every Merkel MEM and every MerkelMeisterstck is the result of a processthat compliments the traditional hand-crafts with the most up-to-date tools, if this benets the product and the cus-tomer. Innovation is not an empty clichfor us; it has been the mainspring of oursuccess since the very beginning.

Electrical discharge machining and theCNC production of workpieces arepart of this modern process, that helpsproduce time-honoured Merkel huntingries or modern MEM ries of the high-est quality. Electroerosive wire-cuttingworks with minimum tolerances in arange of 0.005 to 0.01 millimetres. Diesinking produces sharp edges with al-

most the same precision for example, the guides of the bottom bites of breakopen guns are made this way.

Computer-controlled 5-axis millingcentres work with tolerances from+/- 0.01 millimetres these are thevalues required for the manufacture of

mechanical wristwatches. We use themfor processing steel or duralumin partsas well as for wood. Thanks to CNCmilling we produce stocks with perfectlyush joints to the steel parts of the bar-rel and receiver.

That such precision parts are subse-quently tted by hand or nished witha traditional coating is no contradictionfor us. It all goes to improve the qualityof the nished product. Our employeeshave all learned the classical gunsmithscraft and rened it with knowledge of high-tech production processes. This isexactly where Merkel offers more.

    23FROM ONE-OF-A-KIND TO SERIESPRODUCTION

    MANUFACTORY

The wide range of in-house produc-tion is typical of Merkel manufacturing. All key processes are carried out inour manufactory. Merkel makes all theessential components of a gun itself:barrels, stocks, lock components, lock-ing mechanism parts and barrel sets.

Assembly, ballistic testing and nalinspection we only rely on ourselvesto carry out these processes.

There are product groups where Merkelmakes no more than a single huntinggun per year. There are others whereseveral thousand units are produced. This exibility in production quantities ischaracteristic of Merkel manufacturing. At the request of a customer we canoffer highly individualised hunting guns right down to the single item. At thesame time we produce Meisterstcksin series, where this series productionseemed infeasible before the turn of the millennium.

There is hardly another hunting gunmanufacturer in the world that coverssuch an extensive product range. This

stretches from traditional hunting ries our Meisterstcks right throughto semiautomatic ries of the MEMcategory. Or from the massive Africaside-by-side rie to the modern boltaction rie.

One example: in our manufactory wecombine the classical handcraft of thecolour case hardening of a side-by-sideshotgun receiver with scientic methodsof material and surface research. Withthree-dimensional computer simulationsor controlled shooting with the aid of high-speed cameras, we draw nearer tothe ideal rie. According to the Merkeldenition, the ultimate aim of the idealrie combines functional aesthetic, highprecision, the highest quality and aservice life that will last for generations.

Even if they are distinguished by aperfect nish and enjoy great popularityamong collectors, our ries are all madefor contemporary hunting. And even if we work with cutting-edge technology, every Merkel rie remains an individualone-of-a-kind.

FROM THE IDEA TO THE PRODUCT

    MANUFACTORY

Merkel employees discuss the require-ments prole of a new hunting gun ininformal working groups which includegunsmiths, engineers and hunters. Therst question is always, what should itbe able to do? The decisive impulse of-ten comes from the market. A companythat exports to over 40 countries in the

world knows that there is no such thingas the hunt.

Different hunting cultures, gun legislationand hunting laws, changes in huntingconditions and game population as well ashunting fashion inuence which gun sells inwhich market and which does not. In dis-cussion groups with importers, dealers andhunters, Merkel is continually discussingwhat the market needs and how Mer-kel can cover and serve this demand.

Merkel manufacturing is also subject tocertain basic principles: to apply the bestpossible technology for the respectivepurpose and product, to lock steel againststeel, to guarantee the Merkel top-downprinciple and to always nd the optimalcombination of handcraft and machineproduction.

Once the requirements prole isdened, the work begins with a speci-cations sheet and the developmentassignment. The aesthetic must keeppace with the functionality. That is whythe Merkel development team is backedup by a team of designers from theoutset. This enables the technology

and form to grow together in thesame way that traditional hunting gunscome into being.

The development process is an inter-play of structured, unstructured andcreative components one could alsosimply call it creativity. This can takeseveral years. But the time is well in-vested: at the end of the day a huntinggun should emerge that lasts a lifetimeand is still functional even after 50 or100 years. Thats how we see sustain-ability: a rie that our grandchildren willbe able to enjoy.

    QUALITY AT MINUS 20 DEGREES

    MANUFACTORY

Quality is a word thats often used. Itbecomes much clearer if you imaginethe hunt at minus 20 degrees. A primewild boar, 60 meters shooting distance, the best light for shooting and a ghostlysilence over the hunting ground. Nowits all down to you; and so that evenin this bleak hunting ground you can

depend on your Merkel, we have beenthinking far ahead.

The Merkel quality management systemMQM goes far beyond the require-ments of ISO 9001. MQM is a processoriented, holistic quality managementsystem for all Meisterstck and MEMries. Quality is primarily a question of perfect planning and organisation.

At Merkel the developers think far intothe future. They dene load limits andextreme situations and their effect onevery single component of the gun. Theproduction process and the materialsare derived from this index of maximumdemands.

These ndings form the basis of MQM.This includes process accompanying

testing of individual parts on the siteof their production, permanent errordetection and the quickest possiblecorrective action.

We are one of the few manufacturers of hunting guns that make all the impor-tant components ourselves including

the barrels. We only purchase supplyparts from companies who have com-mitted to our quality code. We verifytheir products in the incoming goodsdepartment on the basis of internation-ally valid statistical procedures.

During and after assembly we test everysingle manufactured gun for function, precision, handling, operability, ap-pearance and nish; these tests go farbeyond the requirements of the legalregulations. Merkel has a eld ofce of the State Proof House in the factory proof of the condence and status of our manufactory. No hunting gun leavesthe manufactory without the state seal. All this for that single moment, becausewe know: quality is quality at minus 20degrees.

A hunting gun consists of 130 compo-nent parts and we manufacture everyimportant part in our Suhl manufactory. The whole is more than the sum of itsparts but we know that the wholecomes down to every part. It is often amatter of a hundredth of a millimetre.

When a shot is red, a bite plate on thereceiver absorbs the thrust load andmust close perfectly and run smoothly.Or it is a question of m aterials that havespecial properties: V-springs of springsteel, which accelerate the hammer withunequalled vehemence.

The basic manufacturing of every partfollows its own laws and requires spe-cic expertise. There is one essentialdifference in the dimensional tolerancesof the parts of Merkels two manufac-tured gun categories: Meisterstckparts are made to a required oversize,to allow more play when they are ttedand aligned to each other. MEM partsat made to exactly dened manufactur-ing tolerances.

    29THE MODERN WIRE CUTTER

    MANUFACTORY

computer controlled die-sink EDM andwire-cut EDM. With wire-cut EDM a veryne brass live wire cuts parts from theworkpiece in a non-conductive uid(dielectric). Temperatures from 1,000to 5,000 C are reached in a dischargechannel, which lead to melting andevaporation of the material particles.

The achievable manufacturing toler-ances are in the micrometer range.

With die-sink EDM, sparks are gener-ated via a conducting tool (electrode)onto the workpiece to be processed. These sparks remove tiny particles of material. The electrode is programmedwith the negative form of the workpiecesurface to be created.

The stage where the mechanicalprocessing of difcult to machine mate-rials reaches its limits is the stage whereelectrical discharge machining (EDM)comes into play. We use this technolo-gy to make traditional rie parts such ascocking rods, set triggers and auxiliarylevers for our Meisterstcks.

Many MEM parts are also producedin this way. A major advantage of theelectro-erosive processing is the veryhigh level of dimensional accuracy;even extremely hard materials such ashardened steel, titanium or hard metalcan be processed. It is also possible toproduce edge-free edges and sharp-edged geometric shapes. The erosiveprocesses used by Merkel are

    CNC PROCESSING

    MANUFACTORY

    M A N U F A C T O R Y

The term CNC computer numericalcontrol describes a world in whichlathes and milling machines are control-led by computer programs. The highlevel of investment in production withmulti-axis machining centres and inhighly qualied staff is rewarded withthe highest quality.

In the Merkel manufactory, this oc-casionally leads to apparently bizarrecombinations of this technology andthe gunmaking handcraft. Once thebarrel maker has constructed and

justied his barrel set with tongs andtorch, solder and wire, this handmadesemi-nished part is clamped onto thehigh-tech CNC machines. For example, the computer controlled milling centreprocesses the hooks of the barrel set of break open gun, which later bind thebarrels and the action into one part. Thus a single unit comes into being thatcan withstand the enormous pressureof a gunpowder explosion with anunparalleled combination of handcraftintuition and computer precision.

Handwork meets high-tech: the forged barrel is clamped in the CNC milling machine.

31THE ART OF THE BARREL MAKER

    MANUFACTORY

When the Merkel brothers foundedtheir company in 1898, the ingeniousgunsmith Gebhard Merkel brought anidea into the partnership. It concernedan innovative technology for solder-ing gun barrel sets which was laterpatented.

According to this process, neither ex-clusively hard solder nor exclusively softsolder should be used, but a combina-tion of both. However, and this is theart of the barrel maker, the requiredtemperatures must not be allowedto damage the structure of the mate-rial. Hard solder joints guarantee thehighest stability, where locking forceshave to be absorbed. And soft solderimproves the heat dissipation throughits high level of exibility. Our barrelmakers say: the barrel can breathe soit has room to expand. This terminologyalso indicates the understanding thatour staff members have of their prod-

uct. They breath life into the barrel setwith skilled hands and centuries of Suhlexperience.

Tension-free and elegant, stable butaesthetically slim and light these con-trary objectives can only be achievedwith barrel sets soldered in this way.

The secret of Merkel precision is theexperience of the employees in assem-bling the barrels. Despite high manu-facturing precision, the componentsrequire caliber-specic ne tuning byhand, to ensure the hunting rie hitsthe target precisely. The intersection of the barrels, that point where the barrelaxes of multi-barrel hunting ries meet,is individually determined according tothe respective caliber combinations.

BARREL MAKINGMerkel is one of the very few hunt-ing gun manufacturers in the worldthat makes its own gun barrels. Whatis more: many renowned hunting gunmanufacturers in Europe place theirtrust in Merkel and buy their shotgunand rie barrels from the Suhl manufac-tory.

The hammer mills are the heart of theMerkel manufactory. Two elaborate coldforging machines process steel for thebarrels of MEM and Meisterstck guns. The barrel blanks are made of hardenedand tempered, high-strength chrome-vanadium or chrome-molybdenumsteel. This process produces barrelswith calibre diameter tolerances of un-der 15 thousandth of a millimetre. Thebarrel blanks are hammered into shapeby the four hammerheads of the coldforging machine with the force of fourtimes 1.25 million Newton equivalentto four times 125 tonnes. A plug gaugeis inserted into the barrel blank, whichbears the negative prole of the eldsand grooves and transfers these tothe inside of the barrel during the forg-ing process. The result is cold forged

barrel as opposed to a conventionallymade barrel.

Characteristic of Merkel barrels is thetapered form: the barrel narrows fromthe receiver to the muzzle by approxi-mately ten thousandth of a millimetre. This prevents premature wearing of the

barrel and enhances the precision of the shot. Merkel cold forging is basedon four key technologies: deep-holedrilling, grinding, honing and anneal-ing. Once the hole has be bored thegrinding and honing follow, which pro-duces extremely smooth inner surfacesin readiness for forging. These technol-ogies, which are used in engine con-struction to nish the sliding surfaces of the cylinder, smooth the Merkel barrelsto two thousandth millimetre exacti-tude, signicantly increasing the servicelife and the precision of the barrel.

Forging is followed by stress-free an-nealing in a vacuum furnace. Inevitablestresses build up in the steel duringforging, which are dissipated by thisheat treatment over a period of severalhours.

    THE BRILLIANCE OF WOOD

    MANUFACTORY

The stock is an essential functionalelement of a rie but the optical andhaptic qualities must also be right. Toachieve this Merkel uses the best wal-nut woods of each category.

It is not only the task of the stock toprovide the rieman with a supporting

structure for shoulder, cheek and hands. The butt stock also absorbs the repul-sion power of the shot. The dimensionsand the design of the stock affect theprecision, appearance and the aesthet-ics of the rie as well as its ergonom-ics.

It is a question of bringing the cast, drop, length of the stock wrist and thestock into equilibrium. This requiresgreat skill on the part of the stockmaker. The functional dimensions aretransferred to the unprocessed stock bymeans of the state-of-the-art machines

before experienced craftsmen get towork on the stock. Iron and wood areperfectly aligned by hand. This cansometimes takes several hours.

Then comes the stock nish: the sur-faces of the stock woods are perfected. The stock is watered and ground and

the process repeated until open poresare no longer visible. The stock canthen be nished in either silk-matt,gloss or pore-lled. This is followed byoiling, which accentuates the nest nu-ances of the grain.

Finally, the checkering is cut by hand orwith a laser beam; this enhances boththe grip and the elegance of the stock.

    THE ART OF THE ENGRAVER

    MANUFACTORY

The engravers work on the hunting gunis where art and handcraft overlap. Mer-kel engravers have fashioned hundredsof classical patterns and found thou-sands of individual solutions since thecompany was founded.

    The Suhl nickname German Damas-

cus is both a claim and an obligationof Merkel engravers. The artistry of itsengravers is one of the great strengthsof the Merkel manufactory. The animalor the nature motif on the hunting gunis a piece of hunting culture it relatesdirectly to the archaic cave drawings of the original hunters. It is both deco-ration and an invocation of huntingfortune. It also gives expression to themagic of the hunt.

Merkel employs more than 15 engrav-ers each and every one a specialist

in his trade. Engravers pass through aclassical apprenticeship and then manyyears of vocational adjustment, untilthey are ready for all-round deploymentin the manufactory. Nevertheless, everyengraver is a specialist in his motifs there are masters of arabesque patternswith stylised tendrils and masters of

animal motifs. They work on a rotatingvice. With graver, chisel and hammerthey decorate the metal parts of theMerkel ries with delicate ligree work.

The artistry of the decoration isachieved by a combination of colourcase hardening, engraving, stock cut-ting and inlay work, right through to thehand engraved signature.

    COLOUR CASEHARDENING

    MANUFACTORY

created on steel surfaces with the aidof leather carbon. The purely empiricalexperience of Suhl colour case harden-ing has been handed down from ge-neration to generation. Even today, thechemical and physical processes of colour case hardening have not beencompletely researched. The wide rangeof inuencing factors make every resultunique.

With colour case hardening, a steelsurface is hardened by enrichment withcarbon. The play of colours ranges fromblue to brown and yellow to differentshads of red. The steel surface is heattreated: leather carbon releases tannicacid, which produces the individualcolours.

Merkel leather carbon for colour casehardening is produced according to anold formula a modern paint coating of the resultant ne surfaces offers addi-

    MASTER OF SURFACES

    MANUFACTORY

It is the surfaces that make for thefascination of a Merkel hunting gun.Traditionally, a range of professionsare engaged in producing immaculatenishes in the Suhl manufactory.

The skilled burnishers with their acutesense for hard steel ensure the perfect

surface. Burnishing is hard graft butwhat counts is the result. There is noalternative to the quality of the hand-work particularly with Meisterstcks. After burnishing, the metal surface issensitive and short-lived.

Now its the turn of the masters of blue-ing: separate parts are heat blued. Butthe high art is the brush oxidisation. This may be somewhat old fashionedand time-consuming, but its worth it tous to achieve the results of the gun-metal gloss on the steel parts of ourMeisterstcks. Conventional heat blue-ing of the barrel would place a strainon the soft solder joints on the Meister-stck barrel set and possibly give rise tosymptoms of corrosion.

Brush oxidisation: these are the pots, crucibles, standard containers lledwith different uids, which if appliedcorrectly impart a ne surface to thehunting guns.

Our masters of blueing keep their cardsclose to their chests. For the outsider it

is also hard to comprehend this se-quence of over 30 work steps that takesalmost a whole working week. Thebrushwork is done at a dened mois-ture level. And the steels are given timeto achieve a specied level of oxidisa-tion. This is where the expert handensures a perfect nish. The masters of blueing invest more than eight hourshandwork in every Merkel Meisterstck.

But the time is well invested in a hunt-ing gun made for generations andprotected by a permanent black-oxidenish.

In the meantime the barrel set hasbeen matt coated, burnished, thenengraved and blued. The receiver andmany small parts have been burnishedand engraved, nitried or colour casehardened. Now all the parts are ttedtogether. The black tter is at the endof a process which is based on quality, perfection and durable products. Heproudly holds what the manufactory hasproduced.

Since 1924 and probably for as long as hunters exist: the 303 is the over-and-under classic among the Merkel Meisterstcks. In1932 this rie cost around 1550 Reichsmarks; more than the Opel P4, which cost 1400 Reichsmarks at that time. No question aboutit: the 303 was and is a luxury product. Its functional principles and its appearance still correspond to the original idea of the perfectover-and-under gun but the materials used and the performance of this gun have been constantly adapted to the current state of technology.
