1) Cables with UO/U 0.6/1 kV having PVC-insulation, metallic armouring and with cross sections ≥ 240 mm2 may be also used for three phase systems with Um = 3.6 kV.

Cables with UO/U 0.6/1 kV are also suitable for direct current systems with highest voltages phase/phase or phase/ground ≤ 1.8 kV.

Guidelines for the current carrying capacity The heat produced by the cable under the given conditions must be able to dissipate to the ambient medium at any point of the cable installation; the loading of the cable must be limited accordingly.

The currents in the tables are based of the calculation methods according to IEC 60287 and DIN VDE with regard to the partial drying out of the soil.

The values stated for cables laid in the ground are based on standard service conditions so that the current carrying capacities can be taken without derating factor in most cases: (see Table 2 a)

The current values are valid for cables laid direct in ground. Further-more it is supposed that the soil can dry out in a limited area where the surface of the cable reaches tempe-ratures which lead to drying out of the soil.

For installation in air continuous load – load factor 1.0 – is considered. The values given apply to cabels laid in air at 30 °C. It is assumed here that heat dissipation by convection and radiation will not be impeded, and that there are no external heat sources. These conditions can be taken as mentioned in Table 2 b.

Grouping of cables, protective co-verings, differing ambient temperatu-res or load factors can considerably influence the load carrying capacity. Group rating factors for cables laid in the ground at a temperature of 20 °C are given for a load factor of 0.7 and for a load factor of 1.0 on pages 62 and 63. For other conditions the rating factor should be calculated according to DIN VDE 0276-1000. We shall be pleased to indicate these values on request.

For rating factors for cables laid in air see pages 64 - 67.

We also have available calculation methods for the most different working conditions and determine the maximum permissible load currents for that.

Short-circuit ratings The short-circuit current can be read for any cable type and conductor size in relation to the disconnection time on the pages 58 and 59. The values have been calculated for short-circuit conditions based on tempera-tures given in table 3.

The short circuit ratings for the copper screens of XLPE-insulated cables are shown on page 60.

Voltage dropIn many cases the cross section of low voltage cables must be cal-culated under consideration of a specified voltage drop. On page 61 the cross section of low voltage cables can be taken depending on the current in the conductor and the length of the cable at a voltage drop of 5 %.

D = Kabelaußendurchmesser in mm

Laying instructions Permissible bending radii When laying power cables, the radii should not be smaller than the values given in table 4. For single bends, e.g. in front of sealing ends, these radii may in the extreme case be reduced by half, if proper handling – heating to approx. 30 °C, bending over a former – is ensured.

Permissible pulling forces When laying power cables by ma-chine, particular attention must be paid to the permissible tensile forces. The formulae for obtaining these va-lues are given in table 5.

If three single-core cables are laid simultaneously with a common pulling grip the same max. pulling forces as they are applicable for single-core cables, are valid. For 3 laid-up sin-gle-core cables the calculation of the permissible pulling forces is based on 3 cables, where as it is based on 2 cables if the 3 single-core cables are not laid-up.

S = Total conductor cross-section in mm2 (without screen and con-centric protective conductor)

D = Outer diameter of the cable in mm

Permissible laying temperatures For laying the temperatures of power cables should not fall below:

plastic-insulated cable with PVC sheath – 05 °CXLPE-insulated cable with PE sheath – 20 °Cwith H sheath – 20 °C

At lower temperatures the cables must be adequately warmed up in advan-ce. This can be done by storing them in a heated area (approx. 20 °C) for several days or by means of special hot air equipment.

Cables in ductsThe inner diameter of conduits andducts must be at least 1.5 times ofthe cable diameter or of the bundlediameter of stranded single-corecables.

If cables of an AC or three phasesystem should laid in a steel pipethan all cables of the system mustbe laid together in one pipe.

When cables are laid in conduits, the current carrying capacity mustbe reduced by a factor of 0.85 ormust be calculated especially indifficulty cases.

1) In mixed installations with service aged PE/XLPE-cables it is possible to get a damage by using of too high DC test voltage levels. After the voltage test it is important to ground the cable by a suitab-le resistor.

2) The test levels and times are preference values and must be confirmed by practical experiences.

3) In mixed installations with PE/XLPE-cables the test time should be 60 min.

For tests on polymer outer sheath of screened or armoured cables the following DC test voltage may be applied between screen or armou-ring and ground for about 1 min:

PE sheath ≤ 5 kVPVC sheath ≤ 3 kV

1) It should be choosed such test methods which do not cause any damage on the cable by e.g. the energy of the impulse waves.

Gerade

this test laboratory. Particularly with regard to the increasing requirements in relation to fire and personnel pro-tection, the following tests, amongst others, can be carried out here:

National fire tests DIN EN 50266-2/1-5International fire tests IEC 60332-1/1-3, IEC 60332-3/22-25Smoke density testing IEC 61034-1/2Toxicity DIN EN 50305Absence of halogen and halogen content DIN EN 50267-2-1, IEC 60754Accreditation certificate for the Test Laboratory Nuremberg: DAT-PL-289/09-00

Nexans is offering its customers a modular and customised service ag-reement for VPE- and paper-insulated energy cable systems. The services encompass the entire lifecycle of cable systems – from planning, ins-tallation, operation and maintenance through to proper disposal – and are available as single modules or as a package. We also offer a “rapid response” service whereby service customers who experience any faults during normal working hours can ring a special, free hotline to our on-call staff. In this way, for example, and without being diverted via a call cen-tre, network operators can contact ex-perts in energy systems who will offer troubleshooting on the telephone and dispatch experienced personnel with special tools to exactly where they are needed. Optional the service hotline is also available on a 24/7 basis.

To ensure the availability of spare parts, Nexans offers a customised warehouse service, whereby essential cable system components are stored on the customer’s site, while other parts are available from Nexans on request. This means that Nexans can store rarely needed fittings or cables for a number of service customers at once, which cuts provision costs for all concerned.

Service customers also benefit from a range of engineering and planning services, which means that everything from feasibility studies, budgeting, consulting, modification, test and training services right through to complex load flow simulations are all available.

Quality and suitability testsNexans has in-house test facilities and an institutionally accredited test laboratory in Nuremberg for selected quality and suitability tests. Numerous test certificates can be provided in

Network simulationsWithin the Nexans Group, there are many years of experience with regard to network simulations and the use of different network simulation programs such as PSS®E, INTEGRAL, PowerWorld Simulator, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, PSCAD® and ATP-EMTP. Network planning can thus on the one hand be supported and on the other hand, it is possible to carry out complete network studies for our customers, including the modelling of power supply networks. Both steady-state and transient investigations, such as power flow, short-circuit and stability tests can be performed for our customers. Furthermore, the electromagnetic fields of cables or overhead lines can be analytically determined or calculated with the aid of FEM software.

Nexans makes available the appro-priate support and expertise to its customers for this purpose.

U = verkettete Spannung [V] I = Speiselänge [km] e = Spannungsfall [%] R = ohmscher Widerstand [Ω/km] Ι = Strombelastung [A] X = induktiver Widerstand [Ω/km]

In many cases, especially for large cross sections, the inductive voltage drop must be taken into consideration.

General formula for three phase systems:

U = Phase to phase voltage [V] I = Length of cable [km] e = Voltage drop [%]R = Resistance [Ω/km] Ι = Current loading [A] X = Inductance [Ω/km]
