Als ich im Jahr 2004 durch Zufall die Landkarte Amerikas von 1562, erstellt vom spanischen Kartographen Diego Guiterrez und dem niederlndischen Kupferstecher Hieronymus Cock fr mich entdeckte, hatte ich erst kurz zuvor meine Diplom- arbeit ber Schriftgestaltung und Schriftanalyse abgeschlossen. Whrend dieser Zeit hatte ich mich in einigen Schriftentwrfen versucht, war aber als Einsteiger schnell an konzeptionellen und formalen Fragestellungen berfordert.

Die Kupferstich-Landkarte mit ihren detaillierten geographischen Bezeichnungen bot mir Gelegenheit, die darauf zu sehende Schrift zu erforschen und mit ihr zu experimentieren. Da ihre grund-legenden Zge schon festgelegt waren, war ich (zumindest vorerst) von der konzeptionellen Last befreit und konnte unbedarft vor-gehen und lernen.

Bei meinem ersten Versuch, eine funktionierende, vielseitig ein-setzbare Schrift zu entwickeln, stellte sich schnell heraus, dass ein bloes Abpausen einzelner Buchstaben kein befriedigendes Ergebnis bringen wrde: Was auf einer manuell gefertigten Land-karte mit handwerklichem Geschick ein einheitliches Schriftbild ergab, funktionierte als digitale Schrift nicht. Ohne den grund-legenden Charakter der Schrift aufzugeben, berarbeitete ich die Buchstaben so, dass sie auch beliebig kombiniert funktionieren.

2010 hat Tierra Nueva einen weiten Weg hinter sich. Sie ist auf ihrer Forschungsfahrt auf 4 Familienmitglieder (Regular, Bold, Italic und Script) mit gesamt fast 3.700 Zeichen fr verschiedene Sprachen und Anwendungen gewachsen.

Somit soll sie, ber 6 Jahre nach Beginn meiner Expedition, vom Stapel gelassen werden. Land in Sicht.

Tierra Nueva ist Unicode-Font, der die Codepages Latin1 und Latin Extended A untersttzt. Somit eignet sich die Schriftart fr alle west- und mitteleuropischen (sowie viele weitere) Sprachen, die mit dem lateinischen Alphabet geschrieben werden.Neben dem Standard-Zeichensatz sind typografische Varian-ten wie Alternativformen, Kapitlchen, Titelsatz-Versalien, astronomische Zeichen, rmische Ziffern u.v.m. enthalten.Eine bersicht ber alle enthaltenen Zeichen findet sich im Abschnitt Zeichensatz.

Tierra Nueva besteht aus vier Opentype-cff-Fonts (Postscript-Outlines), die gleichermaen unter Microsoft Windows und Apple osx verwendet werden knnen.

Sonderzeichen und spezielle Stile sind in opentypefhigen Grafikprogrammen per Features erreichbar, eine bersicht befindet sich im Abschnitt Opentype. Der volle Funktions-umfang ist in Adobe Indesign, Illustrator und Photoshop, sowie Quark xPress (ab Version 7) gegeben. Alle anderen Programme knnen den Font nutzen, die erweiter-ten Funktionen sind allerdings nicht verwendbar. Programme, die nicht nach Unicode arbeiten (xPress bis 6.5, Freehand, ...) knnen nur den Standardzeichensatz ansprechen.

Die Bildschirm-Darstellung der Variante Tierra Nueva Sur ist in Office-Programmen wie Microsoft Word je nach verwendeter Version von Programm und Betriebssystem eingeschrnkt.

Tierra Nueva basiert auf zwei Kupferstecher-Schriften, gefunden auf der Karte von Diego Guiterrez einer aufrechten Antiqua, sowie einer ausgeprgten Kursive.Whrend letztere sich besonders fr Schau-Anwendungen eignet, kann die Aufrechte in ihrer berarbeiteten Form auch fr kurze Lesetexte verwendet werden. Um die Einsatzmglichkeiten flexibler zu gestalten, wurde dieser Zweig der Familie um eine Fette und eine Kursive fr Auszeich-nungszwecke ergnzt.
