Formen des Theravāda Buddhismus, wobei durchgängig Frauen im Mittelpunkt derDarstellung stehen. Bei diesen Frauen handelt es sich sowohl um literarische Gestaltenals auch um zeitgenössische Buddhistinnen. Im Zentrum einer jeden Vorlesung stehtje eine Frau, wie sie uns aus den Quellen oder persönlich entgegentritt. Dabei werdenwir in jeder Vorlesung auch einen Abschnitt aus einem Originaltext in deutscher oderenglischer Übersetzung lesen. Ausgehend von diesen kurzen Texten behandeln wirbeispielsweise Literaturen des Buddhismus, die buddhistische Lehre, das Verhältnisder Laien- und der Ordensgemeinschaften, die regionale Ausbreitung des Buddhismus,ökomische Verhältnisse und die Unterstützung der monastischen Gemeinschaftendurch Laien, das Verhältnis der Nonnen und Mönchsgemeinde, die Rolle von Göttinenund Göttern im Buddhismus, sowie die gegenwärtigen Formen des Buddhismus in Süd-und Südostasien und in westlichen Ländern.

auch Neueinsteiger mit Pāli-Grundkenntnissen können nach Rücksprache teilnehmen.Vorkenntnisse in Sanskrit sind hilfreich, aber nicht notwendig.
Kurzkommentar Voranmeldung: bitte per E-Mail an [email protected] Inhalt Zweiter Teil des Einführungskurses in das Pāli, eine der beiden wichtigen
mittelindischen Sprachen (Prākrit), in dem der einzige in einer indischen Spracheerhaltene buddhistische Kanon verfasst worden ist, der Kanon der sog. Südlichen-bzw. Theravāda-Schule des Buddhismus. Pāli besitzt eine umfangreiche Literatur(außerkanonisch und Kunstdichtung etc.). Das Erlernen dieser Sprache ist besondersfür die Buddhismusforschung sowohl in philologischer als auch ideengeschichtlicherHinsicht sehr hilfreich. Im zweiten Teil des zweisemestrigen Kurses werden dieStudierenden anhand der Lektüre einfacher Originaltexte in die Morphologie, Phonetik,Grammatik, Syntax und das Vokabular der Pāli-Sprache eingeführt. Ziel dabei istes, den Grundwortschatz auszubauen und aufbauend auf den bereits erworbenenGrammatikkenntnissen diese weiter zu vervollständigen, was anhand von kanonischenOriginaltexten erfolgen wird.

the case system were introduced in the first semester. In this second semester, thefocus will shift to bringing these different elements together, during regular readingexercises. The selection of materials used in these exercises will provide standardvocabulary and illustrations of grammatical structures. A portion of the lessons eachweek will also be devoted to introducing the worldview and some of the basic conceptsunderlying Classical Tibetan writings.

combinations were covered in Colloquial Tibetan I. Colloquial Tibetan II primarily workswith the dialogues and exercises contained in the course book "Colloquial Tibetan:The Complete Course for Beginners" (Routledge 2014). Students are introduced toauthentic set piece conversations in order to acquaint them with everyday patterns ofspeech and the cultural context in which they manifest.

Form des Mahākāvya, d.h. großen Kunstgedichts. Aśvaghoṣa ist zusammen mitKālidāsa einer der bekanntesten Dichter Indiens. Seine Sprache ist elegant undwohlklingend. Er greift die alten Legenden um die Person Buddhas auf und arrangiertsie in einer wohlerdachten Komposition. Diese Dichtung gehört zu den Klassikern derbuddhistischen Literatur. In dieser Veranstaltung lesen wir Auszüge von diesem Werk.

in die Bodhisattva-Praxis“) von Śāntideva (Ende des 7., Beginn des 8. Jahrhunderts)ist ein berühmtes Lehrgedicht des höchsten Ranges im Mahāyāna-Buddhismus.Śāntideva lebte und wirkte an der Klosteruniversität Nālandā in Indien. DiesesWerk stellt die Lehre und Praxis eines Bodhisattva („Aspirant auf das Erwachen“)zusammengefasst in einer einfach verständlichen Sprach- und Ausdruckweise dar.Auch als eine Einführung in die Gedankenwelt der Buddhisten in den Mahāyāna-Schulen geeignet.
In diesem Kurs werden die Kapitel V („Bewachen der Bewusstheit“) und VI („Voll-kommenheit der Geduld“) gelesen, in denen die heilsrelevanten und meditativenAspekte der Lehre zur Sprache kommen.

Indologie und wendet sich damit vor allem an Studienanfänger. Es bietet Orientierunginmitten der Vielfalt der indischen Sprachen, führt ein in die Literaturen des vedischenund klassischen Sanskrit, Pāli und Prākrit. Neben der Darstellungen der Grundzügeindischer Religionen wie Hinduismus, Buddhismus und Jinismus erfolgt eine Einführungin die indische Philosophie. Zugleich werden die notwendigen bibliographischenHilfsmittel vorgestellt.

tools to deal with these (often sectarian) texts. We will read sections of Sanskriteulogies on the South Indian temple town Kāñcipuram. Our focus will be on thesectarian presentations and interpretations of the “two golden lizards” in the VaiṣṇavaVaradarāja temple.

Darstellung der Sanskrit-Sprache. Sein Werk trägt den Namen Aṣṭādhyāyī. Es bestehtaus acht Kapiteln, die 4000 Aphorismen (sūtras) enthalten. Pāṇini verwendet eine hochkomplexe Meta-Sprache, mit der er mathematische Perfektion erreicht und somit dieFormulierungen seiner Regeln äußerste Kürze erreichen.Dieser Kurs führt ein in grammatische Prozesse, meta-sprachliche Konventionen undentwickelte Techniken zur Repräsentation linguistischer Informationen in Aṣṭādhyāyī.Das Hauptaugenmerk liegt darauf, mithilfe der Anwendung Pāṇinis GrammatikSanskrit-Wörter (Ausdrücke) zu lernen, anzuwenden und zu interpretieren. DieBeispiele und Übungen, die wir machen werden, sind für diejenigen Studenten, die ihrVerständnis des Sanskrit vertiefen und festigen wollen, sehr sinnvoll.
About two and a half millenia ago, the grammarian Pāṇini provided a description ofSanskrit language. His work is called Aṣṭādhyāyī as it consists of eight chapters thatcontain some 4000 short aphorisms (sūtras). Pāṇini employs a very sophisticatedmeta-language in order to assure mathematical perfection and utmost brevity in theformulation of his rules.This course introduces the grammatical processes, meta-linguistic conventions andwell developed techniques of representation of linguistic information in Aṣṭādhyāyī. Themain focus, however, is to learn and practice to interpret Sanskrit expressions usinghis grammar. The examples and exercises could be useful for students aspiring forstrengthening their command over Sanskrit.Depending upon the constellation of the students, the course can be held either inEnglish or in German.

systems and scripts in India (esp. Brahmi and Kharosthi), the languages of Indicinscriptions (esp. Sanskrit, Prakrit and Hindi), we will investigate the methods ofepigraphic study. Further, we will make a brief suvey of inscriptions in these languagesand practice to read and interpret a few selected ones.Some knowledge of Sanskrit, Prakrit or any other Indo-Aryan languages (esp. Hindi,Nepali, Marathi, Gujarati) would be helpful, although not a necessary pre-requisite ofthis course. The course language would be English.

and French language is not required. However, it can be helpful as some of thesupplementary readings are in these languages.
Inhalt In this seminar we will explore different uses of “sacred texts” in contemporary South
Asia from the point of view of material culture and text performance. The focus here willbe not so much the content of “sacred” texts from a theological or philosophical point ofview, but on how these texts are used by their communities and by those who considerthem a threat to their interests. This seminar seeks, therefore, not merely to find whatthese texts mean, but what these texts do and how they matter in practice.
We will engage in how premodern textual materials (scriptural, narrative, pseudo-historical, etc.) in either Sanskrit or local vernacular languages are reinterpreted andreused in modern and contemporary traditions and performances (oral, audio-visual,digital, textual).
By analyzing the elements of continuity and discontinuity, the seminar aims athistoricizing contemporary religious practice involving sacred texts. For instance, we willstudy the ritual performance of the old Vedic texts in modern India, the inscription andworship of the Bhagavadgītā in so-called “Gītā temples” in north India, the worship ofthe book as the master personified in Sikhism, the stage-performances of stories fromthe Mahābhārata, or the ritual burial of Vaiṣṇava and Buddhist texts. We will also lookat collective burning or desecrating of books as forms of Biblioclasm and the ingestionand imprint of sacred texts on the human body as forms of embodiment.
In the seminar we will explore how premodern textual artefacts are reanimated, butalso contested in modern discourses and ideologies in contemporary Indian society.Students will be challenged to become aware of the sensorial nature of texts, and ofcommunication itself. The seminar aims at addressing theoretical and methodologicaldebates drawn from the latest scholarship in South Asian Area Studies, such as theinteraction between the disciplines of Indology and Anthropology; the relationship ofpremodern regional languages and texts, the interpretation of contemporary societies,and texts as tangible material objects.

Kultur- und Religionsgeschichte Südasiens (Klassische Indologie)Inhalt As a result of the political conflict between Tibet and China in the 1950s, more than one
hundred thousand Tibetans from different regions left their homelands and resettled inneighbouring India (as well as Nepal, Bhutan, and other nation states across the globe).There, they not only built up structures that resembled the world they left behind, butalso found it necessary to adapt to their new environment. These dynamics led to theformation of new ideas and institutions with regard to political leadership, religious aswell as secular education, social organisation, etc., and also entirely new conceptions ofTibetan identities.In the seminar we will investigate the resettlement of Tibetans in (mostly) Indian exilein order to better understand how common notions about Tibetan culture–both etic andemic–are predicated on the special conditions of the Tibetan diaspora.
