Home Automation Villa Vedas has a home automation system that allows guests to control lighting, music and the central A/C from their smartphone via the Control4 and Sonos systems if they wish. In order to avail of this facility, the required steps are as follows:

1. Download the Control4 app from the App store 2. Enter [email protected] as the user name 3. Enter Villa VedasC4 as the password (case sensitive)

It is not recommended to allow young children access to use the home automation, or you will find lights and music being turned on and off when you least expect it! Electricity Electricity is a limited commodity in Bali, and power outages are common. Please therefore turn off air-conditioning and lights when not in use. Villa Vedas has a 25 kva generator to produce emergency backup power, however please be aware of where the torches and candles are located, as these might be useful before the generator is switched on after a power cut. Laundry Laundry is mostly done in the villa. If you have any personal items you would like washed, please ask the staff to do laundry for you. A modest charge will be applied for laundry. Loss and damage Whilst we appreciate that a degree of wear and tear is unavoidable, please note that if you cause any damage then you will be responsible to cover repair or replacement. Jumping into the Pool Although the pool is 2.5 metres deep below the concrete beam, and guests often jump off the beam into the pool, kindly note the obvious innate risks in doing this, and guests jump from the concrete beam into the pool at their own risk. Mosquitoes We have the villa fogged regularly for mosquitoes, and hope that they are not a problem. However, they will usually appear around dusk, if at all. If you are a person who attracts mosquitoes then we suggest you use mosquito spray, and also ask the staff to set some mosquito coils for you. Police registration As per Indonesian legal regulations, we are obliged to register all guests staying with the local authorities (this is also to help protect you in the case of any issues). In order to do this, the staff will need to collect all passports upon arrival in order to take copies of them.

Valuables Please make sure you secure all your valuable personal items in the safety deposit box provided for the purpose. There is a manual card to show you how to use it, however if you are not sure, please ask the staff for assistance. Although we have never had any incidents of theft at the villa, we cannot accept responsibility for your valuables, and ask that you treat your valuables with care. Bag snatching (usually by scooters) has become a problem in some places in Bali, so we suggest that you do not carry passports, excess cash or valuables that you do not intend to use, with you. In addition, you are advised to secure your bag in front of your body if possible, especially when in busy areas.

ADDITIONAL SERVICES AND INFORMATION

Car and motorbike rental Villa Vedas has two new and well maintained automatic Honda PCX scooters available for use by guests on a complimentary basis. However, please note that motorcycling can be a dangerous activity, and if you decide to use the scooters, you might be asked for a license and or a passport, and you use them at your own risk. Furthermore, you will be required to repair any damage you might cause to the scooters. If you wish to hire a car and driver we are happy to assist you. The cost is Rupiah 600,000 for the car & driver for a day (fuel is charged extra as required). Cars usually carry 7 passengers, and the price will be more for a vehicle that can carry more people. Additional scooters can be rented from Rupiah 65, 000 to 100,000 per day depending on the model and age. Please ask the staff if you require assistance to hire a car or a scooter. Note – Please be aware that the police (usually at traffic light intersections) sometimes target tourists for bribes for not wearing a helmet, lack of international license or stopping past the stop line. Usually payment of an on the spot ‘fine’ of Rupiah 100,000 in cash will see you on the way again, but the police might start the negotiation at Rupiah 300,000 or more (even showing you a board setting out the “official” fines if you choose not to settle the matter on the spot). It is unwise to show them a wallet containing a substantial amount of cash, as they will then probably hold out for more than Rp 100,000. Also, always try to negotiate in a calm manner - getting angry, however strange this exercise might seem to someone from a country where corruption is not so visible, rarely helps, and can have adverse consequences. Child minding services If you require a baby sitter, the staff can arrange one for you at a modest cost. Please keep in mind that we require advance notice in order to arrange this service. The villa has a cot and a high chair for babies. First Aid and medical issues We provide basic first aid medication at Villa Vedas. If you require further medical assistance, please contact our staff or refer to our hospital and clinic details at the end of this guide. Chemists in Bali are called “Apotek”, and the staff will gladly assist you to buy anything else you might need.

Massage and Spa If you wish to have a relaxing massage or spa treatment within the comfort of the villa, please make your request to a member of staff, and they will make arrangements for you on the day and time that you wish. Please note that it is better to give advance notice in order to ensure availability of spa personnel. Finns Recreation Club & Finns Beach Club Membership Villa Vedas has a Platinum villa membership of Finns Recreation Club and Finns Beach Club, which entitles guests to use the Recreation Club’s gym, Water Splash Park (great for the kids), tennis courts, lap pool and other facilities free of charge. The club also offers bowling, trampolining, and dining facilities, with the 50% discount for Platinum members after 5pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays being especially popular. Platinum members can also enjoy a round of gold at Handara Club in Bedugul for Rupiah 700,000, which is a useful discount to the published price of Rupiah 2,000,000. A day pass to the club now cost Rp 450,000, so the membership cards that offer free entry and the same facilities are a valuable thing. For more details of membership benefits please see http://finnsrecclub.com. Villa Vedas Shirts & Caps In case guests would like a souvenir of their stay at the villa, Villa Vedas offers its shirts and caps embossed with the villa’s logo for Rupiah 200,000 and Rupiah 150,000 respectively. Taxi Service The staff will be happy to book a taxi for you if required. All taxis have a meter, but late at night they will typically charge you more than the meter rate, and seek to negotiate a price before departing. We recommend you to use Blue Bird Taxi, of which the phone number is 0361-701-111. Tipping Throughout Bali wages are relatively low, and tipping is considered normal and welcome if you are happy with the service provided. In accordance with local regulations we charge a 5% service fee, which is paid in full to the staff. We train our staff regularly on guest relations and service, and if you are happy with the service they have provided, then any tip you wish to give the villa staff is greatly appreciated by them. Tipping in Bali is a matter of personal choice, not almost an obligation as it is in some countries. However, we are often asked by guests what might be considered normal and reasonable as regards tipping. Our suggestion might be that if you were extremely happy with the service provided, then USD 10 per guest per day would thrill the staff, but USD 5 per guest per day would also be warmly welcomed. As regards Villa Vedas, our mild preference is that you deal with the villa manager rather than directly with individual members of staff, and the manager will distribute any tips equally among the staff. However, of course if you feel that one person merits something special, it is your prerogative to do what you wish. Payments for Incidentals & Currency Exchange We have credit card facilities at the villa, and you will be asked to make payments for incidentals at the end of your stay in Indonesian Rupiah.

For US guests we can accept a transfer to the owner’s onshore Chase account in the US via the Zelle payment service, which avoids foreign currency exchange costs. For the best foreign exchange rates, please use the large BMC outlets in Kuta or Seminyak. The smaller operators will often show higher rates, but have many tricks to give you less than advertised (hidden commissions, sleight of hand with low denomination notes etc). ATMs will give you limited amounts of cash. We will give you cash against your credit card at a charge of 3% to cover the credit card charges, and we will exchange foreign currency for Rupiah at no more than 1% away from BMC’s published rates.

TO SEE AND DO

TEMPLES Check with the staff, and attend a ceremony if you can. They are colourful, surprising and a part of the Balinese way of life. Remember as well to walk the beach on the day before and after the full moon. Each village in Bali has to purify the gods of its temples. Villagers reach the beach in processions throughout the day, and beach rituals are extremely poetic. Important Information about Balinese Temples There are thousands of temples - temples for villages, temples for districts, temples for spring water, temples for irrigation and so on. But we will highlight some of the more important ones that visitors might like to see. However, first some general information about temples in Bali. You often have to wear are sarong (a big piece of fabric to wrap around your waist and covers your knees) and sometimes even a sash. A sarong / sash is often provided at the temple entrance (if tourists visit regularly), for which a small fee or donation may be requested. Remember that a temple is a holy place; so please show appropriate respect. In particular:

- Remain silent when there is a ceremony - Never sit higher than a priest (the one dressed in white) when he is conducting a ceremony - Try to avoid using camera flash in the faces of someone who is praying - Don’t walk between two people praying - When a woman is having her period, she is not allowed to enter the temple - If you have an open wound, please do not enter the temple - Women should cover their shoulders and midriff - so please note what you are wearing

Some of Bali’s most important temples are as follows. Besakih Temple – more than a thousand years old, Besakih Temple is known as the "Mother Temple of Bali". Perched on the slopes of Mount Agung, at a lofty 1,000 meters (3,000 feet) above sea level, Besakih is the biggest and holiest of all the Balinese temples. Named after the Dragon God believed to inhabit the mountain, it is said to be the only temple where a Hindu of any caste can worship. Eighteen separate sanctuaries belonging to different regencies and caste groups surround the three main temples dedicated to Shiva, Brahma and Vishnu. To the Balinese, visiting the temple sanctuaries is a special pilgrimage. The mountain top setting gives it an almost mystical quality. Steps ascend through split gates to the main courtyard where the Trinity shrines, dedicated to Shiva, Brahma, and Vishnu, are wrapped in cloth and decorated with flower offerings. There are a number of temples, but many of their inner courtyards are closed to visitors. Try to reach Pura Besakih before 9am, when many tourist buses start to arrive, so that you can take in the temple in the quiet of the early morning. Uluwatu Temple (Pura Luhur) - Bali's most spectacular temples located high on a cliff top at the edge of a plateau 250 feet above the waves of the Indian Ocean. Dedicated to the spirits of the sea, the famous Pura Luhur Uluwatu temple is an architectural wonder in black coral rock, beautifully designed with spectacular views. It is a popular place to view the sunset. Tanah Lot Temple - the royal Taman Ayun temple was built by one of the last priests to come to Bali from Java in the 16th century. The temple stands on top of a huge rock, surrounded by the sea and is one of Bali's most important sea temples. Ancient rituals pay homage to the guardian spirits of the sea. Poisonous sea snakes found in the caves at the base of the rocky island are believed to be guardians of the temple, standing vigil against evil spirits and intruders. The best time to see Tanah Lot is in the late afternoon when the temple is in silhouette. Pura Tirta Empul - built around a sacred spring, Tampak Siring. An inscription dates the spring all the way back to 926AD, and there are fine carvings and Garudas (the national bird of Indonesia) on the courtyard buildings. The temple and its two bathing spots have been used by the Balinese for over a thousand years for good health and prosperity, as the spring water is reputed to have the power to cure a variety of ailments. Regular purification ceremonies also take place here. Tampak Siring artists produce marvellous bone and ivory carvings. A little off the main road in Tampaksiring is Gunung Kawi with its group of large stone memorials cut into cliffs on either side of a picturesque river valley. It is believed to date from 11th century, and is one of Bali's most impressive sights. Ulun Danu Temple - no less stunning is the mountain resort of Bratan, in Bedugul, and the magnificent Ulun Danu, an inspiring place of worship that appears to rise out of waters of Lake Bratan. Goa Lawah Temple - the Goa Lawah temple is located in a cave filled with thousands of bats, and is said to lead all the way to Besakih. Goa Lawah is one of six temples open to the public, and is revered as a sacred site for Brahma. It is located on the south east coast. Taman Ayun Temple in Mengwi - distinctive pagodas symbolizing the sacred mountain Mahameru, residence of the Supreme God surrounded by a moat in this lovely temple in Mengwi. Built in 1634, Taman Ayun was restored and enlarged in 1937. On its festival day (odalan) hundreds of women come into the temple bringing colourful offerings, which they place together in front of the merus.

However, if there is no booking on the day of your departure, you may guarantee a late checkout to dovetail with your flight time by paying 50% of the daily published rate for a check-out up to 6pm, which we will extend free of charge to whatever time you need if we still have no booking on the evening of your departure. If you choose not to guarantee a 6pm check-out (or if it wasn’t available at booking time because of previous bookings), and there is a new check-in on the day of your departure, your check-out time will remain at 12 noon. IN HOUSE DINING Breakfast is complimentary for registered guests. For other meals our chef will provide you with a menu outlining their specialities. Ideally you will make your selections the day before, as the chef and sous chef shop daily at local markets, delicatessens and specialty shops in the morning, and will have lunch and / or dinner ready for you at a time of your choosing. There is a 30% mark up applied to the cost of the ingredients to cover some of the time and transport to purchase and prepare the food, and the receipts for the ingredients purchased will be produced for your approval the next morning. The children’s menus are offered on the same basis as the adult ones (same selection for all children subject to ages only), although naturally they may select from either menu. A range of soft drinks are available at a modest cost, and are billed on departure. Teas, cappuccinos, lattes, macchiatos, espressos (using our Gaggenau automatic coffee machine) are available free of charge. ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES Australian and New Zealand wines and a reasonable range of cocktails are available from the bar at wholesale prices plus a small margin, and attract no extra taxes. PARTIES AND FUNCTIONS? Our guests are welcome to invite friends to cocktails or dinner at the villa. We endeavour to be flexible for impromptu gatherings, however if numbers go ≥ 20 guests in total, an event fee may be applied, with pricing depending on numbers and the type of event contemplated. Kindly advise the villa’s staff if you intend to have a large gathering so they can help you to make the necessary preparations. GUEST INSPECTIONS Kindly note that Villa Vedas is a popular wedding venue. Unlike holiday guests who are normally able to make a decision to book Villa Vedas based on the website and images, wedding guests almost always prefer to inspect the villa in person, and we hope that you will allow inspections of the villa if necessary, which we will try to arrange when you are out.
