OPERATIONAFGHAN ASSIST

2 YEARS 318 DAYS

By Staff Sgt. R. Michael Longoria

After approximately one year of renovations to the Combined Facility at the E-3A Component’s forward operating base in Italy, FOB Trapani officially re-opened in support of full-crew and surveillance mission sorties on Nov. 7, 2013.

“Our FOBs allow us to effectively and efficiently extend the range and length of our operations,” Col. Marco D’Asta, Operations Wing commander, said. “The re-opening of FOB Trapani helps us reduce transit time and increase coverage when conducting missions in the Mediterranean. In short, it improves our ability to protect NATO airspace and territories”

The first full crew entered the new combined facility after a small ceremony with the cut of a commemorative ribbon. FOB personnel supported proficiency sorties for flight deck training and

hosted several conferences during the renovation period.

In addition, they focused their energy on supervising the contractors responsible for the renewal.

“It’s been an interesting and challenging period of time,” Lt. Col. Gabriele Gualazzini, FOB Trapani commander, said. “My personnel did an outstanding job overseeing the project and becoming experts in areas totally new to them.”

While FOB personnel didn’t physically work on building the facility, they helped direct the bricklayers, plumbers and electricians plus run activities connected with them.

“It’s also been a very rewarding moment; one that gave me the chance to re-confirm the excellent attitude and spirit of the FOB personnel,” Colonel Gulazzini added.

The renewal started in May 2012 and

the facility was handed back over to the Component in June 2013.

The FOB commander explained FOB personnel are happy to get back to their normal routine and start doing the job they are good at, which is “supporting the aircraft

of the Component.” The FOB commander would like to give a special thanks to A7 for the “amazing job of coordinating and keeping FOB personnel connected to the Component” and to all the other units that helped to make the re-opening “quick and efficient.”

Everyone contributes to milestones in E-3A Component HistoryIn the past few weeks the

E-3A Component marked two achievements in supporting Operation Afghanistan Assist; flying the 1,000th NATO AWACS mission as well as accumulating 10,000th E-3A flying hours over Afghanistan.

While these milestones were made at our deployed operating base, they would not have been possible without the sustained support from the men and women here at NATO Airbase Geilenkirchen and our associated Forward Operating Location and Bases.

Take for example the efforts of the Cargo and Passenger movement section. In the Components first full year of operating with contracted transport service, this team worked to move 611 tons of Cargo and 4448 passengers in 2013. Much of this effort was focused on supporting deployed operations – including delivering 2 new fire trucks to Kabul International Airport.

Another important effort supporting our deployed operations are the Component members conducting pre-deployment training. In 2013 this team trained over 2,200 personnel in Core Combat Skills. Thanks to their tireless efforts, NATO Air Base Geilenkirchen is now a respected deployment training center, supporting NATO Civilians from several NATO Headquarter.

Our Medical Branch supports every one of our deployed members with pre- and post-deployment medical screenings as well as “just-in time” immunizations to ensure our health. E-3A Component fire fighters and force protection personnel routinely deploy to enable the capability of our host base to support E-3A operations.

Supply squadron personnel maintain hundreds of aircraft parts and equipment at the deployed location which has enabled our aircraft maintenance personnel to fix every aircraft discrepancy.

Working quietly behind the scenes back at MOB are Component members in our A1 section who determine pay and benefits for our deployed NATO civilians. Our National Support Units ensure each of us is properly equipped for combat operations. The world class chefs in the Flight Kitchen prepare thousands of in-flight meals which always make the flights to Afghanistan a little more enjoyable for me!

On Dec. 11, 2013, the Supreme Allied Commander Europe, Gen. Phillip Breedlove, will visit our base. During this visit, SACEUR will present both the NATO Airborne Early Warning and Control Force and the E-3A Component campaign pennant to recognize our sustained contribution to the ISAF mission in Afghanistan. While it is easy to focus on the accomplishments achieved through our forward element in Afghanistan, I hope each of you see this visit as recognition of the importance of your sustained individual effort to our overall

Component mission. Without each of you – these milestones would not be possible.

Every day, each member of our E-3A Component contributes to the operational success realized in Operation Afghanistan Assist by accomplishing your mission in your duty sections. I want to thank each of you for the three years of hard work to ensure the success of this operation. Like every milestone in the 31 years of E-3A Component history, generating 1,000 E-3A sorties in Afghanistan reflects the effort and contributions of every member of the E-3A Component. I am proud to be a part of your team!

By Chief Master Sgt. Michael Möller

The NATO E-3A Component and the Royal Norwegian Air Force celebrated the 30th Anniversary of the Forward Operating Location Ørland Nov. 1 to Nov. 2, 2013, at Ørland, Norway.

On November 1, 1983, NATO and the Norwegian Government agreed to use the Ørland Main Air Station as forward operating location for NATO E-3A AWACS. Since this historic date, the men and women of FOL Ørland, along with the RNAF, along have been supporting the E-3A Component during deployments and exercises.

The FOL is a base of national and strategic high importance due to its location at the mouth of the Trondheimsfjord in the municipality of Brekstad, in the center of Norway.

In celebration of the anniversary, the commander of FOL Ørland Lt. Col. Per Bent Mathisen hosted a dinner on Nov. 1, 2013.

“I’m feeling glad to be here amongst special people tonight, members of the FOL representing to our component,” Maj. Gen. Andrew Mueller, E-3A Component commander, said. “The FOL is a valued partner and it’s a privilege

to share 30 years of heritage. I’m looking forward with excitement for the next 30 years.”

General Mueller handed a picture collage to the FOL commander that explains the many important areas, which the FOL provides support to the Component.

“This present is dedicated to the men and women of the FOL and their honorable support to the NATO E-3A Component” the general said.

Also, during the dinner, Capt. Arnfinn Mollan, a member of the FOL was recognized for his duties and

received a Certificate of Appreciation for 25 years of faithful service to the Component. The celebration continued and on Nov. 2, 2013, the anniversary was highlighted with a Hangar Party, where all members of Ørland Main Air Station, their families and friends were invited.

Ørland Main Air Station was built by the occupation forces in 1941 during the German occupation. Today’s main runway was built in 1944 as a result of an expansion to the airfield. Soon, with the moving of Air Station Bodø and the incorporation of the new F-35 Lightning II fighter jet, Ørland Main Air Station will become the principal airbase of the Royal Norwegian Air Force.

CIS Squadron Comm Chat

By Maj. Cort Stargell

Do you have a tendency to keep things because you “might” need them one day? Spring seems to be the time when garages get cleaned out, storage buildings purged, or cluttered rooms cleared. This helps to create more space, more room, and helps keep things manageable.

Well, I’d like to suggest another area that may need your attention. The ITW houses a large amount of files for Component personnel in several servers and unfortunately, these servers do not have an unlimited storage capacity.

Currently, there is only about 200 gigabytes of combined storage on seven servers available to house your information. The ITW cannot act as sanitation personnel cleaning out old or unused files for other people. Therefore, we would like to

encourage everyone to take a look at what files you currently have archived on the servers and delete any unnecessary items. Think about what needs to be saved…Do you really need that copy of a document from 15 years ago?

Personal documents and personal information should be saved to your local computer on the D: drive. Why the D: drive and not My Documents you ask? This drive will not be affected by the upcoming Windows 7 migration. Anything on the main hard drive, including the My Documents will be erased when the new upgrade occurs.

Your personal e-mail PSTs (e-mail storage) should also be saved on the D: drive. ONLY Office PSTs can be saved to the network drives.

So what can you do with working documents that require back up or files you want to keep for your eyes only? This is where the H: drive (commonly called the Home Drive) comes into the picture. This is a limited data storage area on the network that is restricted to the individual’s personal profile;

nobody else can access these files. On the other hand, server drives are available for authorized personnel to access the stored data for official use only. Server drives are restricted to authorized unit personnel and can be tailored to who can look at certain files. Official business should be stored on the network storage because it is backed up regularly, which allows your information to be saved if your computer crashes.

Information management requires a team to maintain it properly

consisting of individual users and IT professionals. With your help, we can ensure data storage capacity levels are maintained at an appropriate level and that you have the space available when you need it.

Otherwise, we could end up with server data storage overflow that could end up looking something like the picture below!

No, just kidding…but seriously! WE GREATLY APPRECIATE YOUR SUPPORT!

The Hellenic Air Force celebrated Saint Patrons Day 2013 and the 101st Hellenic Air Force Day from Nov. 7 to Nov. 10, 2013.

To help celebrate the occasion, Hellenic Air Force’s 131st Combat Group opened the gates at Air Base Preveza, Greece, and gave the public the opportunity to visit the Forward Operating Base Aktion.

For the first time since a NATO AWACS landed there in 1986, the local public had a chance to visit FOB Aktion and take a close look at an E-3A as well as the Greek Air Force Embraer

145 jet, Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) system.

Besides the two aircraft attractions, a variety of ground and air equipment was displayed together with a picture exhibition that illustrated and explained the Hellenic Air Force’s history and capabilities.

As special guests during the event, the FOB Commander Lt. Col. Panagiotis Drakopoulos had the honour to welcome the E-3A Component Commander Maj. Gen. Andrew M. Mueller and the Deputy Chief of Staff Support for Hellenic Tactical Air Force Brig. Gen. Georgios Avgouropoulos.

By Tech. Sgt. Amanda Cable

Fifteen years ago, a tragic accident devastated the men and women of NATO Air Base Geilenkirchen and the 141st Air Refueling Wing, Fairchild Air Force Base, Washington State.

This tragic accident took the lives of four crewmembers whose memory is forever etched in their families and friend’s hearts, and the minds of the members of the E-3A Component. On, January 13th 1999, Maj. Dave Fite, Maj. Matt Laiho, Capt. Ken Thiele, and Tech. Sgt. Rich Visintainer stepped out to fly what would be their last mission before returning home the following day.

The crew took off at 1703 local time in a KC-135 enroute to the air-to-air refueling track over the North Sea to refuel one of our Component’s NE-3A aircraft. With refueling complete, the crew headed back to Geilenkirchen and made a routine call to Command Post 30 minutes out. Weather conditions were fine and the Tanker crew was cleared for an ILS approach on Runway 27. However, before touch down, the crew made the decision to go around and informed the Tower; that would be their last radio call made.

“The go around was initiated, but things went wrong. The aircraft

went airborne, in an unusual steep angle, lost speed and crashed just outside the boundary of the airfield north of the runway,” said Brigadier General Klaus-Peter Stieglitz in a speech he gave the component one year after the incident.

General Stieglitz was the E-3A Component Commander at the time of the accident. One year later, the E-3A Component held a Memorial Service to honor those lives lost and dedicated two memorial sites to the crew. One memorial rock was placed in front of the E-3A Component headquarters building, while the other was placed at the actual crash site outside the west gate.

This coming January marks the 15th anniversary of the deaths of these brave individuals who served their country with honor and will never be forgotten. In order to honor them in the way they deserve, the U.S. Contingent is hosting a Remembrance Ceremony on Jan. 10, 2014, at 1100hrs near the memorial rock in front of the E-3A Component headquarters building.

The leadership from the 141st Air Refueling Wing, Operations Group, Maintenance Group, and 116th Air Refueling Squadron from Fairchild Air Force Base, as well as other fellow crew members and maintenance personnel, will be present for this

special day. Please make this day a priority and come out and show your respect to our fallen comrades. Allow us to honor these fallen heroes in the way they deserve and never let their memory be forgotten.

The E-3A Component engaged in a self-generated exercise on Nov. 4, 2013.

For 18 days, the Component conducted Magic Viking 13-02, an exercise designed to test the Component’s ability to meet its NATO Response Force (NRF) commitment. The Component also went through “alert state’ procedures to ensure it can secure the main operating base.

“As a High Readiness and Deployable Force unit of the NRF, it is important that the Component stays ready,” said Maj. Gen. Andrew M. Mueller, Component commander. “Over the past three weeks, the Component validated its readiness by practicing many of the processes we would utilize if we needed to employ to support the NRF.”

On Nov. 18, the Component initiated the execution portion of the exercise with the movement of five

aircraft and 120 personnel to Norway.

Three E-3As and 93 Component members along, with two KC-135 Stratotankers and 27 Airman from the Ohio Air National Guard, deployed to Forward Operating Location Ørland, Norway.

After arrival, the Component executed three different missions. Alpha crew orbited over Iceland and provided support for Iceland’s Quick Alert Response; Bravo crew orbited in Norway and worked with three Norwegian fighter squadrons; and Charlie crew orbited over England and took part in U.S. Air Force exercise “Determined Hunt”.

Endex for Magic Viking was called on Nov. 22 after all aircraft and personnel returned to Geilenkirchen.

“I want to congratulate the team on an outstanding effort,” General Mueller said. “Many thanks to all the Component members for a job well done.”

Belgian Kingsday: This tradition goes back a very long time. In 1866, just after King Leopold II inherited the throne, he decided that November 15, name day for Saint Leopold, would be chosen as a day to remember the first King of Belgium Leopold I van Saksen Coburgh Gotha.

The name used at that moment was “Commemoration day of the founder of the Royal Dynasty” or simply “Day of the Dynasty”.

This day is NOT a national holiday, as is July 21, for most of the Belgians but this is a day where people can express their feeling towards their King. Government employees (including military) and some schools – universities do get an extra day of leave.

Since 1866 this day changed several times but, as from 1930, it was decided to keep it fixed on Nov. 15. In 1952, King Bouwdewijn decided that this day would stay as a remembrance day and by Royal Decree renamed the Commemoration day of the founder of the Royal Dynasty to Kings Day.

On this day a “Te DEUM” (a Solemn Hymn) will be sung in all cathedrals to invoke the Devine Assistance for our King. For the Belgian Armed Forces this occasion is used to express their attachment and deepest respect to their King and Supreme commander.

The way the military show this respect is first of all through a telegram all units send to the King to restate our loyalty and secondly through a toast to the King on Nov. 15.

Members of the NATO Airborne Early Warning Force’s Canadian Contingent and their families travelled to Belgium and France to participate in Remembrance Day ceremonies on Nov. 9and 10, 2013.

On Nov. 9, the contingent travelled to Ypres, Belgium, to observe the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing.

Every evening at 2000, the road through Menin Gate is closed and a Last Post service is carried out. This service has been done nightly since July 2, 1928.

The next day, the contingent participated in the Veterans Affairs Canada Remembrance Day ceremony at the Canadian National Vimy Memorial at Vimy, France.

Members of the contingent participated in parade as representatives of the Government of Canada, as sentries at the monument during the parade or in the colour party for Royal Canadian Legion Branch 003, Geilenkirchen.

Chapel staff invites Component’s German Community for lunchLt Col Volker von dem Bach, German National Support Unit commander, thanks Chaplain (Capt.) Jeremy Gorline and Christine Young, event coordinator, for their

hospitality following an event at the Base Chapel on Oct. 15, 2013, at NATO Air Base Geilenkirchen, Germany.

GK’s International Chapel management invited the E-3A Component’s German community for lunch as part of the NSU Outreach Project, which started earlier this year. Besides the delicious food, the event helped everyone get to know one another better through mind-opening conversations.

All E-3A Component members, spouses, partners and their guests are invited to the ultimate party of 2014: The MWA Special carnival dinner dance night at the E-3A Club Feb. 7 at 1800.

Tickets are 30 Euro per person (MWA members can purchase up to two tickets for 25 Euro each). The ticket price includes a warm buffet, as well as a cake and coffee.

Wear a Carnival costume and this is highly desirable because you can win a prize for the best costume (single or couple).

Special note: you and your guests

must be identifiable at the Main Gate when entering the base and should not be in possession of any toy weapon for security reasons.

The programme starts at 1800 with the first entertainment show. At 1930, E-3A Component Commander Maj. Gen. Andrew Mueller will officially open the event.

The absolute highlights of the evening are: The super clown Desalles, show and party duo Die 2 Schweinfurter, show dance group Showlights, Carnival group K.G. Ulenspiegel with the Grenzland trumpet players and show dance group Revolution.
