In this theory-oriented class we will explore the ?biocultural turn? in Literary and Cultural Studies which emphasizes theintersections of biology and culture. This perspective includes a closer exploration of the relation between art and science, orthe humanities and natural sciences. Both fields have long tended to stand in opposition regarding their explanatory attempts. However, scholars have increasingly shown that both biology and culture can often not be fully understood in isolation (?Biocultures Manifesto?).

Turning to biocultural processes, embodiment, illness, disability, ageing, and biotechnology we will examine how biologicallydefined processes are material and cultural at the same time. Furthermore, we will focus on a critique of biologization andbiomedicalization. These perspectives are crucial for the understanding of the core categories of Cultural Studies, namely theconstruction of identity narratives, as well as national and cultural belonging. Although of global interest, our main focus willbe on the United States. Amongst others, we will study texts by Priscilla Wald, Adele Clarke, Lennard J. Davis, Nikolas Rose,David B. Morris, R?diger Kunow, Judith Butler, and Donna Haraway.

Telling fairy tales has been considered a "domestic art" at least since Plato in the? Gorgias ?referred to the "old wives'tales" told by nurses to amuse and to frighten children. While this association has not done much to enhance the status ofthese cultural stories, ?fairy tales belong to?the most powerfully formative tales in any cultur. Moreover, their?post/modernmass-medial adaptation in film and graphic narrative has significantly enhanced?the staying power of these stories and theirwidespread and enduring popularity. All this suggests that fairy tales must be addressing issues that have a significant socialfunction?whether critical, conservative, compensatory, or therapeutic: In that perspective, fairy tales register an effort on thepart of both children and adults, women and men, to develop maps for coping with personal anxieties, family conflicts, socialfrictions, and the myriad frustrations of everyday life. No surprise, then, that contemporary literatures in the Anglophone worldshould abound with revisions, reworkings and rewritings of traditional folk and fairy tales.

This lecture course?will combine theory-based discussions of the genre of the fairy tale with in-depth readings of exemplaryand influential contemporary fairy tales including, among others, Salman Rushdie?s? Haroun and the Sea of Stories , EmmaDonoghue's? Kissing the Witch , Angela Carter?s and Jeanette Winterson?s feminist rewritings of the Grimm Brothers? tales, and Neil Gaiman?s? Coraline .

This course engages with the phenomenon of caste and traces it through different forms of cultural production. Departing fromthe established genre of Indian Dalit literature, we will look at Dalit as well as non-Dalit engagements with caste in the Indiandiaspora with special emphasis on Great Britain. NOTE: Room change. We will now meet in room 1.19.1.16.

The 1857 Indian rebellion (also referred to as the "uprising" or "mutiny" or, in India, sometimes the "First War of IndianIndependence") had far reaching consequences for British colonialism in India and for discourses of racial differences andclaims of racial superiority in Britain, and it became a recurring theme in British literature from the late 1850s until at leastthe late 20th century - although this literature has rarely been counted among the greatest or most canonical of works. Inthis seminar we will examine accounts of the rebellion in British fiction (short stories, novels and dramas), discuss the role ofliterature in forming and perpetuating certain understandings and memories of the rebellion in British culture, and examinedebates over so-called postcolonial literary imaginings of the uprising.

The nineteenth-century texts are all copyright free and available online; links will be posted to Moodle. Students will berequired to obtain a copy of J.G. Farrell's The Siege of Krishnapur .

Please follow the "comment" link above for more information on comments, course readings, course requirements andgrading. In eighteenth-century Britain, the hybrid genre of the travel narrative became one of the most popular and respected forms ofwriting for a public that was eager to consume accounts of the geography and customs of foreign lands. With the exception ofthe novel, the number of books published on foreign travel surpassed all other genres. Yet many critics have suggested thatthese narratives justified British imperialism via an emphasis on British cultural superiority over and against an exoticised anddebased cultural otherness, thus consolidating ideas of Britishness at the expense of non-British others. Using Said?s seminalaccount of othering in _Orientalism_, students will examine three travel narratives from the eighteenth century, Lady MaryWortley Montagu?s Turkish Embassy Letters (1710-1711), Samuel Johnson?s _Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland_(1775), and Dean Mahomet?s _Travels_ (1794), in order to interrogate the ways in which these representations of foreignlands and cultures perpetuate and/or contest models of British superiority as a means of establishing imperial domination.

Please follow the "comment" link above for more information on comments, course readings, course requirements andgrading.Between 1700 and 1810 British merchants transported almost three million Africans across the Atlantic for the purposes ofchattel slavery ? a trade upon which the British economy eventually came to depend. Yet from the middle of the eighteenthcentury various abolitionist movements began to speak out against a practice they saw as brutal and inhumane. The Britishhad long seen themselves as a people devoted to liberty, and whose spirit was embodied in the rights of the Magna Carta. Bythe 1780s a wave of abolitionist fervour swept through Britain, led by the Quakers and the Society for the Abolition of the SlaveTrade, and by 1807 the slave trade had been abolished (although slavery itself was not made illegal in the British Empire until1833). This course will examine the various discourses of human rights and humanitarian sympathy that emerged at the endof the long eighteenth century in relation to the abolitionist movement. Students will be asked to analyse and compare texts byBritish abolitionists with those of ex-slaves such as Olaudah Equiano and Mary Prince in order to examine debates over civiland religious liberties, cultural exchange, geographical migration and identity transformation.

Coraline .

Course Description

The issue of gender in representations of the Northern Irish Troubles had, until recently, been largely sidelined by scholars?focus on difference in Northern Ireland in terms of religious and sectarian divisions. The recent consideration of the Troublesthrough the theoretical framework of gender has highlighted the difference between male and female experiences of theTroubles, as well as the roles played by men and women in the conflict. At the same time, it has also highlighted hownarratives of national identity on both sides of the conflict have tended to reinforce conventional gender roles. Using differentcultural representations of the Troubles ? films, novels, poetry and murals ? as a starting point for discussion, this course looksat the Troubles through a gendered perspective and considers how issues of gender and sexuality are framed within a contextof religious and sectarian violence, and different visions of nationhood.

This course engages with the phenomenon of caste and traces it through different forms of cultural production. Departing fromthe established genre of Indian Dalit literature, we will look at Dalit as well as non-Dalit engagements with caste in the Indiandiaspora with special emphasis on Great Britain. Rather than a survey of authoritative scholarship on such diasporic culturalproduction, this research-oriented course represents a first foray into or tentative engagement with this field.

In this second part of the module, participants will learn about aspects ofsyntax, i.e. how phrases, clauses, and sentences are formed, and how to apply these to new examples and, ideally, analyzeexamples of actual language use themselves by - excerpting the relevant knowledge from course-specific slidecasts andadditional literature on the basis of guiding questions, - testing their understanding by applying their newly acquired knowledgeto exercise questions, - clarifying questions in class, and - completing assignments, which also include an application task, for each subtopic in order to later be able to use these skills in the advanced linguistics courses in their BA and MA studies.Notice: For the teacher training BA program (Studienordnung WS 13/14) and the new BA program (Studienordnung WS15/16), this course together with Introduction to Synchronic Linguistics, Part I forms the Basic Module in Linguistics (BM-Lin).The module ends with a final written exam of 180 minutes comprising the contents of Parts I and II. During its world-wide expansion, it has come incontact with a multitude of other languages and cultures. In this seminar, we will examine how contact-induced changes andprocesses have influenced and shaped the varieties of English (in the past and present). After a theoretical introduction tothe field of contact linguistics, students will be required to work on their own small-scale research projects and present theirfindings in class at the end of the semester.

Kommentar

Please follow the "comment" link above for more information on comments, course readings, course requirements andgrading. In this course, students will be acquainted with two central concepts of sociolinguistics and pragmatics: the concept of a"linguistic situation" and the concept of a "communicative situation." The former relates language(s) to broader social factorsin a given unit and touches upon a number of fields of sociolinguistic investigation (e.g., bi- and multilingualism, contactlanguages, language policy and language planning, language and culture, language attitudes, language and ethnicity/identity). In turn, the concept of a communicative situation applies to actual linguistic encounters. It is constituted by numerousinterrelated variables, as, inter alia, the type of communicative situation, the social organizations, the location, and theparticipants.

Kommentar

Please follow the "comment" link above for more information on comments, course readings, course requirements andgrading. This foundational course draws on the phonetic, morphological, lexical, semantic and syntactic description as trained inthe introductory module and pursues linguistic description at the level of (written) text and (spoken) discourse. Text(s)and discourse(s) are viewed functionally as ways of communicating and interacting with addressees. Their meaning, orinterpretation, is heavily dependent upon context. We will examine a number of structural and organizational principlescommon to both text and discourse production, have a closer look at the context(s) in which they are produced, and we willconsider specific aspects of text and discourse description including communicative genres and conversational structure.
