Du hast einen Bachelor-Abschluss und praktische Erfahrung in der Komposition, Produktion und Aufführung von Pop. Du möchtest deine künstlerisch-praktischen Erfahrungen erwei-tern und gleichzeitig zentrale Aspekte der Popmusik vertie-fen und in einem individuellen Studienverlauf verbinden.

Und du hast dieses Projekt im Kopf: Eine Idee, die unbedingt professionell umgesetzt werden soll und deine künstlerische Entwicklung wirklich weiterführen könnte. Wenn sie sich denn realisieren ließe.

Aber der Plan ist groß. Dir fehlt es im Moment an einem spezifischen künstlerischem Profil, an Kontakten, an Mitteln, an technischem, organisatorischem und ökonomischem Wis-sen – Notwendigkeiten, die Du für die Umsetzung brauchst.

You‘ve gained a bachelor‘s degree and practical experience in the composition, production and performance of pop. You want to expand your artistic and practical experience and at the same time deepen the central aspects of pop music andconnect them in an individual course of study.

And you have this project in mind: An idea that definitely should be implemented professionally, and that could really further your artistic development. That is, if it could be rea-lized.

But it‘s a tall order. At the moment, you lack the specific artistic profile, the contacts, the resources, the technical, or-ganizational and economic knowledge – all the things you would need for implementation.

The Folkwang University of the Arts can now offer you a postgraduate degree: The new master‘s program „Popular Music“ (M.Mus). Designed to realize big ideas.

Was ist dein Projekt?

Vielleicht bist Du spezialisiert auf das Live-Coding von Mu-sik und möchtest den Computer als Performance-Instrument mit einem klassisch-symphonischen Instrumentarium inte-grieren und mit Freestyle-Rap.

Oder Du hast die Vision, dass eine Elektronik-Band zusam-men mit einer Jazz-Bläser-Sektion in einem Club auftritt, und 20 Tänzer tanzen dazu eine einstudierte Choreografie.

Vielleicht willst Du auch Filmmusik komponieren und pro-duzieren, und brauchst dafür Zugang sowohl zu anderen In-stitutionen als auch zu den anderen Musik-, Theater-, Tanz-, Gestaltungs- und Wissenschaftsstudierenden der Folkwang Universität der Künste.

What is your project?

Maybe you‘re focusing on the live coding of music and want to integrate the computer as a performance instrument with classical symphonic orchestration and freestyle rap.

Or you have a vision of an electronic band playing along with a jazz brass section in a club, with 20 dancers dance to a rehearsed choreography.

Maybe you also want to compose and produce film music, and need access to people from other institutions as well as to other Folkwang students of music, theatre, dance, design and academic studies.

Oder Du willst herausfinden, wie man während eines Auf-tritts aus der Reaktion des Publikums Bilder erzeugen und projezieren kann, die der Musik eine neue visuelle Kompo-nente geben.

Was auch immer deine Ideen sind: Am Ende deines vier-semestrigen Studiums wirst du nicht nur mehrere Pro-jekte realisiert haben – du wirst auch über ein Netz-werk von PartnernInnen für dauerhafte Kooperationen verfügen. Kontakte und Teamerfahrung mit deinen Kom-millitonInnen und Lehrenden, Studierenden und Lehren-den aus anderen Folkwang Disziplinen und externen Insti- tutionen und Unternehmen ermöglichen dir den Auf- oder Ausbau einer eigenen künstlerischen Existenz.

Whatever your ideas are: At the end of your four semesters of study you will not only have realized several projects – you‘ll also have a network of partners for long-term cooperation. Contacts and team experience with your fellow students and teachers, scholars and lecturers from the other Folkwang dis-ciplines and from external institutions and companies allow you to set up or consolidate your artistic existence.

Wer lehrt?

Unsere Lehrenden sind KomponistInnen, ProduzentInnen und PerformerInnen mit nationaler und internationaler Aner-kennung und Berufserfahrung im Pop. Sie arbeiten eng mit-einander und mit den Lehrenden der anderen Fachbereiche der Folkwang Universität zusammen, um so auch anspruchs-vollste, multi- und crossmediale Projekte zu ermöglichen.

Who is teaching?

Our teachers are composers, producers and performers of national and international recognition. With professional ex-perience in pop. They work closely with each other and with the teachers of the other departments of the Folkwang Uni-versity, so as to enable even the most demanding, multi- and cross-media projects.

Wer studiert?

Es gibt acht Studienplätze pro Semester; wenn du einen davon erringen willst, muss du einen Bachelor-Abschluss haben, künstlerische Erfahrung im Bereich der Popmusik nachweisen können und die Eignungsprüfung bestehen. Als Nachweis künstlerischer Erfahrung gelten uns einschlägige Arbeiten, die als Partituren, Tonträger, Videos etc. mit der Bewerbung eingereicht werden. Außerdem benötigen wir einen Entwurf für ein künstlerisches Entwicklungsvorhaben: Den Projektplan für das Master-Projekt, der die Themen der künstlerischen Auseinandersetzung während des Masterstu-diums und die angestrebten Resultate beschreibt.

Anhand der vorgelegten Arbeiten und des Projektplans be-urteilen wir die grundsätzliche künstlerische Eignung der BewerberInnen. Die Besten laden wir ein zu einer abschlie-ßenden Eignungsprüfung.

Who is studying?

There are eight places per semester, and if you want to win one of them, you must have a bachelor‘s degree, demonstra-te artistic experience in the field of pop music, and pass the qualifying examination. As proof of artistic experience, we expect you to submit relevant work, such as scores, sound recordings, videos, or other media, with your application. We also require a project plan for your master project, describing the subjects of your artistic exploration during the master‘s program and the intended results.

On the basis of the submitted works and project plan, we assess the fundamental artistic aptitude of applicants. The best we invite to take the final qualifying examination.

Die folkwang universität der künste ist die zentrale künstlerische Ausbildungsstätte für Musik, Theater, Tanz, Gestaltung und Wissenschaft.

Seit 1927 sind hier gemäß der Folkwang-Idee von der spar-tenübergreifenden Zusammenarbeit der Künste die ver-schiedenen Disziplinen unter einem Dach vereinigt. Die über 1.500 Studierenden und mehr als 400 Lehrenden kommen aus allen Ländern der Welt.

Folkwang ist in der Metropole Ruhr mit Standorten in Essen, Duisburg, Dortmund und Bochum vertreten.

The folkwang university of the arts is the central place for artistic training in music, theatre, dance, design and aca-demic studies.

In line with the Folkwang idea of the cross-disciplinary in-teraction of the arts, a plurality of different art forms and disciplines have been united under one roof here since 1927. The over 1.500 students and more than 400 teachers at the Folkwang University of the Arts come from almost every country around the world.

With locations in Essen, Duisburg, Bochum and Dortmund Folkwang is represented in the Ruhr Metropolis.
