die Tests und Klassenarbeiten in diesem Band decken die wichtigsten Themen der Lehrpläne der 8. Klasse ab, sodass du die Arbeiten, die du in der Schule schreibst, gut vorbereitet angehen kannst. Du kannst prüfen, wie gut dein Hör- und Leseverstehen ist, ob du einen umfangreichen Wortschatz hast, oder wie gut du die Grammatik beherrschst. Auch musst du eigene Texte verfassen und Sprachmittlungsaufgaben bearbeiten.

1 Piccadilly Circus is a circular square. There are several streets leading into it. Piccadilly Circus is
famous for its neon signs and video displays on the building on its northern side. In the centre there is
a fountain and a column with the statue of Eros on top.
2 Rockefeller Center is a complex of 19 commercial buildings. At Christmas time there is a huge
Christmas tree decorated with electric candles in front of it. The Lower Plaza is made into an ice-
skating rink in winter.
3 Westminster Bridge was opened in 1862. It links the Palace of Westminster and Big Ben on the
west side of the Thames with the London Eye on the east side. The bridge is painted mainly green,
the same colour as the seats in the House of Commons, which is close to it.
4 There are 8 million works on display in the British Museum. One of the most famous objects
is the Rosetta Stone, which helped to decipher the Egyptian hieroglyphs. The entrance hall with its
44 columns looks like a Greek temple.
5 Brooklyn Bridge is a suspension bridge that connects the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn
across the East River. It was completed in 1883 and has a main span of 486 m.
6 Strictly speaking, Bryce Canyon isn’t a canyon because it wasn’t formed by a river. The soft rocks
have been shaped by wind and rain into thousands of carved spires. It is a popular hiking area, espe-
cially in the morning and evening sun, when the rocks take on a brilliant red colour.
7 Times Square is at the junction of Broadway and Seventh Avenue. There are large billboards and
numerous advertisements on the walls of the skyscrapers. Every day 330,000 people pass through
Times Square, most of them tourists. Well-known shops, restaurants and theatres are on both sides
of the world’s busiest pedestrian area.
8 The 9/11 Memorial consists of two Memorial Pools, each with four waterfalls over 9 m deep
descending into a black hole. They are surrounded by four skyscrapers. The tallest is the One World
Trade Center (1WTC), which was originally called Freedom Tower. Rising to 1776 ft (= 541.3 m),
it is the tallest building in the United States.
9 The Shard is a pyramid-shaped skyscraper in the London borough of Southwark. At 310 m it is the
second tallest skyscraper in Europe, topped only by the Mercury Tower in Moscow, Russia. The Shard
has 72 floors and its front is made of glass. It contains 10 luxury flats, offices, a hotel, restaurants,
exhibitions and four panorama decks.
