Letter from the Church Secretary

Dear all,

How the months slip by and we are into summer holidays now. I wonder how many of you go back to the same place year afteryear?

We go back to Shanklin on the Isle of Wight, to the same Hotel, where Ican feed and watch the red squirrels.

The pace of my life slows right down as I just watch the antics of thisdelightful native wild animal.

Rest and recharging of batteries is good for all and I know many ofyou look forward to the Holiday From Home,

when you get a lovely 4 days of entertainment and companionship.Have an enjoyable time.

Another treat while away is attending Mass in Quarr Abbey, a serviceled by Monks. This ancient Abbey has had people worshipping therefor so many, many years but sadly we see the decline in numbers andyou can't help wondering how long they will be able to keep itfunctioning.

O to see a resurgence in attendance at services in Abbeys,Cathedrals, Churches and Chapels, wouldn't that be wonderful.

Let us see if we can help our church family grow. A challenge for usall.

With Christian love to you all

Mavis

No one has responded to my June appeal for a new editor. The job is by no means an onerous one. In fact, it can provideimmense satisfaction when you see your work in print.

I did say that, ideally, the hand over should take place during thesummer break. There is a 2 month break before the Septemberedition is due.

I am writing up help notes which should explain some of theprocesses involved in producing Catalyst. You are welcome tohave a copy of these to help you decide on taking up theeditor's quill and mouse.

The Journey

I thought I'd copy & share this story:-

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he

was dead.He remembered dying, and that the dog walking beside him hadbeen dead for years. He wondered where the road was leadingthem.

After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one sideof the road. It looked like fine marble... At the top of a long hill, itwas broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight.

When he was standing before it he saw a magnificent gate in thearch that looked like mother-of-pearl, and the street that led to thegate looked like pure gold. He and the dog walked toward thegate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side.

When he was close enough, he called out, 'Excuse me, where arewe?'

'This is Heaven, sir,' the man answered.. 'Wow! Would you happen tohave some water?' the man asked.

Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water broughtright up. 'The man gestured, and the gate began to open.

'Can my friend,' gesturing toward his dog, 'come in, too?' thetraveller asked.

'I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets.'The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the roadand continued the way he had been going with his dog.

After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, hecame to a dirt road leading through a farm gate that looked as if ithad never been closed. There was no fence.

As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against atree and reading a book.

'Excuse me!' he called to the man. 'Do you have any water?''Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there, come on in.''How about my friend here?' the traveller gestured to the dog.'There should be a bowl by the pump.'They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it.

Christian Aid Walk 2016-----

Bright and early on the morningof Sunday 22 May, Barbara and Iset out as so often before to helpwith the Christian Aid sponsoredwalk around the City Churches. This walk is traditionally held onthe Sunday which followsimmediately after the formal endof Christian Aid Week, and it is afitting conclusion. The weathermay not always be kind but theatmosphere more than makes up

for that (and it was fairly kind this year, anyway!).The City streets tend to be fairly quiet on a Sunday morning (at least Iassume so – as you know, we are all usually elsewhere!) and wethreaded our way through them to St Mary le Bow, the nerve centre ofoperations for the day. Our job was to be stationed at one of thecheckpoints and stamp the walkers’ cards as they came through. TheCity churches themselves form the checkpoints, giving walkers achance to see inside, or to enjoy the various activities laid on atvarious churches – and between us Barbara and I have coveredseven churches and two cathedrals over the years. But this year it wasa bit different – we were based at the City’s only synagogue. It is theoldest in the country, and very interesting, though once the mainbody of walkers began to stream through we didn’t have time to thinkabout that!

For many people it is very much a family walk, with young children andeven babes in arms (or pushchairs) making the trip, though there areplenty of adult parties and single walkers too. Christian Aid do a greatdeal to liven things up for the younger walkers, and we saw severalwho had benefited from face-painting or balloon modelling beforethey reached us. There are also more serious issues covered, withsuggested prayers in the walkers’ booklet, and points to pause andpray, sometimes in gardens now maintained by the City which wereonce churches, where the walls and other remains can still be seen.

As ever, it was a fun day, full of good fellowship, and I wonder if HayesFree Church might provide any more volunteers, or even walkers, when next year’s walk comes along (it will be Sunday 21 May 2017, bythe way...).

Don’t Panic-----------------

A Bishop of Carlisle was terminating an interview with a very difficultwoman of the diocese who was at Rose Castle once again to lodgea complaint about something or other. They were in the hall, gettinground to the final handshake, when a Secretary went out slammingthe door. The Bishop’s wife called downstairs: ‘Has that stupid woman finallygone, dear?’Quick as a flash, the Bishop replied, ‘O, yes, my love, she went agesago. I’m with Mrs. Robinson now.’

Courier Fraud -------------------

I thought it important to share the following which I received byemail. I receive these emails reports etc as I belong to aneighbourhood watch scheme. Editor

From our Shortlands DWO PCSO Adam Charles.07/06/16 - 08/06/16

Dear All,Please be advised of a recent courier fraud offence that took placeon our Ward, as detailed below. It seems that the fraudsters aregetting more persistent and finding new ways to deceive victims. What makes this offence even more upsetting was that for personalreasons the victim was feeling very low at the time. Thanks & Kind RegardsAdam

Victim received phone call from his bank stating that there was aproblem with his cards and a courier would be sent to collect them.He thought it was a scam and put the phone down. A few minuteslater he received another phone call from a male saying that hewas the bank manager who repeated the information from theprevious call. The victim thought he was genuine and agreed tohand over the cards and his pin numbers. The following day one ofthe cards was returned and the victim was instructed to go to thebank and withdraw £5,000 cash and if asked why to say it was forhome improvements. He then returned home as instructed and acourier came and collected the money. The victim contacted hisson who believed it was suspicious and helped the victim carry outchecks. These revealed that £250 had been withdrawn and £550spent on a further transaction. Several further transactions onanother card had been declined.Suspect descriptions have been provided by the victim and it isbeing investigated. One of them was an Asian male in his early 20sthe other a white female in her mid 50s. A third suspect (a male)was spoken to on the phone but did not meet the informant. If you recall anything that you think may be useful intelligence for thePolice, please call 101.

Mark 4: 39, “Peace, be still".

Be still my restless soul -Tossed on the sea of life. The wind is rising and todayThere's struggle and there's strife.

Be still my restless soul -Amid the tempest’s roar. The skies are grey, the night is dark,And we are far from shore.

Be still my restless soul -As once on Galilee:Our Lord arose, rebuked the wind,And calmed the angry sea.

Be still my restless soul -Your Risen Master saves.Look deep into the eyes of God.Christ walks upon the waves.

Be still my restless soul -Death’s shadows flee away.Step out into the sea of faithInto eternal day.
