Margrét Oddsdóttir, MD (1955-2009)
Los editores de Schwartz. Principios de cirugía desean dedicar esta novena edición a la memoria de Mar- grét Oddsdóttir, autora principal del capítulo “Vesícula biliar y sistema biliar extrahepático” en estas últi- mas dos ediciones. La doctora Oddsdóttir nació en Isafjördur, Islandia, una pequeña villa de pescadores cerca del círculo ártico en el norte de Islandia. Recibió su capacitación médica de pregrado e internado quirúrgico en la Universidad de Islandia y completó su capacitación como Cirujano general en la Yale University, en 1994 y más tarde se capacitó en cirugía laparoscópica bajo la dirección de John Hunter en el hospital Emory. Después de completar su capacitación regresó a la Universidad de Islandia donde se estableció como experta en cirugía gastrointestinal con especialización en cirugía de mínima invasión. En el año 2002 fue profesora y jefa de Cirugía general en la misma institución.
Margrét y su esposo tuvieron dos hijos quienes nacieron durante sus años de capacitación en Esta- dos Unidos. Con frecuencia viajaron con ella a los congresos quirúrgicos en Estados Unidos, donde Margrét se hizo amiga de muchos cirujanos. Ella fue persistente en identificar cirujanos islandeses jóve- nes que fueron enviados para su capacitación a Estados Unidos y persiguió con intensidad el logro de los más altos estándares en su propio departamento. Tristemente, Margrét falleció por cáncer mamario avanzado, muerte precedida por la de su esposo John por cáncer pancreático, 18 meses antes.
Inmensamente orgullosa de su herencia vikinga, la doctora Oddsdóttir disfrutaba citar el Hávamál, un poema vikingo antiguo. Una cita que disfrutaba en particular decía que “un hombre que tiene inte- gridad personal tiene un mejor lugar que aquellos que pasan la vida intentando impresionar a otros. A tales hombres nadie puede quitarles la vida porque aunque es inevitable la muerte, su reputación pós- tuma nunca morirá”.
Oddur y Siggi, dedicamos este libro en honor de su madre, una cirujana de renombre internacional, amada y respetada por todos aquellos que tuvimos la suerte de conocerla. Su memoria permanecerá con nosotros, su reputación como líder en cirugía nos acompañará y sus palabras se conservarán en este texto de cirugía, uno de los más respetados.
